When I first saw ads for this movie, i wasn't too excited for it. But now I am really excited. I also loved that you took a look at the technical aspects of the film. I love those aspects of film and I am so happy you mentioned it.

I was in such a hurry that I never got around to actually watching the trailer/promotion for it so when the screener was sent last minute I just jumped right in with no major expectations (good or bad) and was pleasantly surprised!
It really feels like MBB is using Netflix as her training ground and I hope she will eventually make the jump to developing films to be released in the cinema because this trajectory from Enola Holmes 2 to Damsel is very promising… 👀🤔🎬

your attention to techical details scratches my particular movie itch, it's so satisfying when everything is working for a movie, especially the things that aren't noticable first glance. we may take for granted how a cave is lighted, but if it was badly done it would have lowered the quality significantly. cinematographers ensure every frame is in service to the story and they don't get nearly enough credit

    • @LadyJenevia

Cinematography and VFX are similar in that not enough people appreciate the artistry of what is achieved and they instead notice those aspects when they’re not done well. 🫣

Great review! I loved this movie and was looking for someone who could tell me what made it feel this great!
For me it felt like it commented on being a woman in society. Pushed to sacrifice yourself for the good of others, used for someone else’s purposes and getting trapped in traumatizing cirmcumstanced are historically part of the female experience.
    !!Spoilers ahead!!
It felt really good that she wasn’t a secret badass all along. For this story to work -and frankly, to deserve it’s title and make the wordplay make sense- she NEEDED to be a victim first. She slowly learned to find the strength to go on, learn about the threat and apply herself to get out the situation.
She needed to have the choice to go back in for the ultimate scene where she arms herself and goes to fight the dragon for it to be as impactful as it was. I‘m glad that the majority of the runtime was really about this characters journey, it made me feel like I was in there with her.
Also, absolutely love the relationships between all female characters (save the Queen) in this movie! So good to see

I had a great time with this movie so it's refreshing to see a positive review.
    Great video!
I wish we found out more about the dragons... is she the last of her kind because of her golden blood? It was mentioned "legends of them being hunted for their blood" by one of the knights.
Is that how Auria became so rich?
I feel like this movie has hidden storytelling or maybe I'm reading wayy too far into it lol

This video title in my feed was the only thing I knew going in, and I liked the movie very much! Thanks for the rec.
Thought the dragon design was very interesting, much more mammalian than reptilian. Modelling off of cats made sense. Also loved that her fire was mostly burning liquid fuel. I think they paid decent attention to the burn injuries in this movie, too.
Kudos to the cinematographer, this movie was gorgeous. I especially liked the scene as she was observing that concave rock, with the dust currents in slow motion. Beautifully communicated Elodie's planning and what elements of the scene to focus on.
I don't generally pay attention to architecture, but now I need to watch this again to look for Portuguese details. Thanks for letting me know!

I watched it today when I saw this video come up so I could watch this after. I liked it quite a lot. My least favourite thing was probably how they opened the movie with the line about how it wasn't a movie about a Damsel being saved, I could've done without that. Other than that the movie was pretty fun. The step-mother reversal was also just really great, I did expect it/hope for it, but it was just really great.

Modeling a dragon's movements along feline lines works perfectly; watch the dragon in _Dragonheart_ walking along side Dennis Quaid: the dragon is _very_ cat-like in its movements.

There are actually many benefits to filming in studios and on sets but I was more so shading the push to overly rely on VFX to cut corners and exploit workers who don’t have the same union protections.
But yeah, if you’re trying to do an old fantasy concept, there are PLENTY of castles still around. Go film at one! 🫵🏻

This is why I’ve gotta see reviews by the girls. I don’t think the script was that strong (definitely too leaning on tropes, or rather subverting them), but it doesn’t change the fact that it was a fun film! I loved learning about the details that went into filming this from you because I loved the cinematography and the outfits!! Besides the noticeable makeup on MBB, the hair and clothing were STUNNING. And I liked the dragon a lot too, esp its lava like fire. Lots of interesting choices, a fun film that can just be appreciated without being torn down. Definitely would’ve loved to see more of the stepmother/AB!!

Ok, I’m a lady, I’d love to hear what made other reviews misogynistic, because there was certainly no hatred of women displayed in the ones I watched, only a hatred of the script and movie’s…. Idiosyncrasies.

@@zoeshaclarke8315 They're not TH-camrs I generally follow, but the algorithm "suggested" them as it was clear to the algorithm that I enjoyed it. They were mostly about how "Girl Bosses" are wrecking fantasy, another kept mistaking Damsel as a retelling of England's St. George and the dragon story. I kept wondering if they'd seen some different version that I had...

@@realbadger Ok, but that still doesn’t explain where the misogyny laid with their reviews.
That was, (and this is no attempt to be rude) but waffle that diverted from the question. It does make one wonder that if your first examples of misogyny is one man over-referencing the story of St George and the viewpoint that “girlboss” isn’t a successful formula in its current format then was there misogyny to begin with or rather scathing reviews… 🤷🏽‍♀️

Housemate was just telling me about this movie, and definitely need to see it.
But I would love to do this as a double feature with the also FAIRLY recent (1-2 years ago) Princess, which also sees us following a princess in a typical fairy tale scenario, but reacting to it WILDLY differently than the usual script.
In this one, she's basically doing a reverse "RAID", as she has to fight her way out of a tower full of goons with that unique Vietnamese martial arts film style. And it also has some interesting commentary on the tropes and opinions of these types of characters along the way.

Maybe she learned English from listening to a visiting Italian.

Do you know I noticed some thing when looking for reviews on this movie everyone is trashing it except for you and I absolutely loved it. Mosy of the complaints that I see are ones that we would not hear if this was a movie about a guy and I’m just like wow telling on yourselves aren’t you guys wooo.
For instance, this one person was going off about how she’s tearing up her dress, which is a symbolism for tearing up societal expectations, but I have seen so many guys in movies a rip up their shirts for bandages, and I’ve seen women rip up their dresses to use as bandages for other people, and nobody says anything. So apparently it’s a hyper feminist to bandage yourself with the resources at your disposal. You know you’re supposed to use a rock on your severely burned leg.
The only other explanation I can find is that everyone is becoming incredibly cynical and pessimistic with movies now.
