    On "My Car Story" we're in Volo IL on 5-9-20.
    We're looking at a 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie Skyliner Convertible in Inca Gold & Colonial White. The car features the factory 332 CI V8 engine and has a rare factory Air Conditioning option.
    Today I'm speaking with Jay Grams, Buyer / Co-Owner of the Volo Auto Museum. This car has been restored and the “Skyliner” top is a hard top that folds into the trunk making this car a Convertible.
    The car's located at Volo Auto Museum, 27582 Volo Village Rd., Volo IL 60073. Web site is www.VoloCars.com If you love cars (Hollywood, Classic, Muscle, Antique), and Military equipment, memorabilia, and mementos then you must stop by this location.
    ENJOY!

    Nobody and I mean nobody makes cars like this anymore, no evidence of cost cutting anywhere, incredible detailing everywhere, the 59 Ford styling just pops! stainless Stainless steel fender skirts, and the cherry on top, the mechanical roof! Truly an icon, never to be repeated! Way to go Lou!

    I still love my 59 Galaxie, with a " hi-poed" FE 352 hi compression big block, torque monster. Family car, originally belonged, to my Vietnam Vet father. I lovingly restored it in memory of my long now gone parents, turned it into a sleeper, Turquoise & Colonial white

    Air conditioning was an unimaginable luxury at that time. I remember my parents loading us up at three in the morning so we would be at our destination before the afternoon heat. The original purchaser of this car dropped some serious money!!

      People were more conservative in those days. Spending 450.00 to add air conditioning to a 3000.00 car didn’t make sense
      to people. Having it on a convertible was REALLY rare. Tight fisted people would buy nice cars like Galaxies and Impalas with six cylinder engines and no radios. Some people would have Mickey Mouse (aftermarket) air conditioning added when the summer heat got overwhelming! Sears did a lot of installs!

      @@craigjorgensen4637 I’d bet factory air in 1959 was closer to $700 than $400. In some cars, it could be 1/3 the price of the car! There is one of these cars for sale in my area that needs restoration but it would probably cost $75,000-$100,000 to restore it.

    Interesting factoid about the retractable tops, operation was all analog and mechanical, no computer stuff as it had not been invented . Yet, Ford engineers found a way to make it all work with relay switches, interlock switches, spiral cinch levers to suck the trunk lid down, etc. To control the actuation. Quite a mechanical dance actually.

Looked just like this only was a stripped version, 3 on the tree, straight 6, no PS or PB, no radio!. Heater and headlights is all it came with. My dad was very "thrifty." 🤣😂. It's often been said cars like this were rolling works of art.
    This is like the Mona Lisa :)
    Never seen the retractable hard top in operation but recall seeing something from a magazine for the first ('57 ?) edition.
    There were so many things going on there it was almost like you didn't have a trunk.
    They got it sorted out quite nicely.
    btw, I was trying to think of a dessert this two tone finish reminded me of...Lemon marangue pie ? Not yellow enough but close.

    The color combination is Colonial White and Inca Gold. The upholstery has metallic threads which give the sparkle. The data plate on the door jamb has a code for the District Sales Office DSO which gives the best hint for where this car was originally sold. Some of the hardware for the Skyliner was used in the 1958 to 1966 Ford Thunderbird and 1961 to 1967 Lincoln Continental convertibles. These 1959 models had both badges for the Fairlane 500 and Galaxie because the Galaxie was a mid-year addition.

    Hi, Lou! 1959 was the first year for the Galaxie series. Lots of fascination with space in those days. It was also the last of the three years for the retractable. Interesting how you can get air conditioning TWO ways in this car! BTW, at that time there was a singing group called the Skyliners. I don't know if they named themselves after the car, but it was in 1959 they came out with their best-known hits, "Since I Don't Have You" and "This I Swear". The group has since had a few deaths and many other personnel changes, but they still perform today.

    Thanks for posting this beautiful Ford Lou. Beginning in 1957 Ford hoods hinged in the front, and this continued through 1959. The thought was to make the car safer because the hood could not fly open and blind the driver. But then the reports began coming in of these cars involved in severe front end collisions. The hood would pop open and engine parts would crash through the windshield! Ford returned to a rear hinged hood in 1960.
    Regarding the quarter panel location of the fuel filler, this was unique to the Skyliner. Any other 1959 Ford car had the center fuel fill.

      That’s correct about the fuel filler on the side. The retractable hardtop of the Skyliner necessitated that. The soft top convertible, called the SUNliner and all the other non-convertibles had the fuel filler in the center of the back, just above the bumper.

    I admired Volo cars for years. From it's side profile, I think the '59 carried the high retractable rear better than the the other models. Likely this one was a demo/showroom car in the day. The AC unit may look to some to be dealer-installed or aftermarket, but in the late '50's-early '60's many cars had "add-on" looking AC units under the dash that was indeed factory. Beautiful car.

    • @MisterMikeTexas

    A lot of people now days don't know these Fordomatic transmissions had two different Drive ranges, D1 and D2. One mode gave you that fluid coupled smooth takaway like a powergilde or Buick transmission, the other gave you quicker bunny starts by adding a lower first gear. In other words two speed automatic or three speed. Later productions had a single D and two colored dots, small white dot, or bigger green dot. Had a 1966 Galaxie with a 352 V8 4bbl and a 1966 Mustang 200 cu inline 6 which both had this feature.

      Actually, that was called a Cruise-O-Matic! The Ford-O-Matic only had PRNDL on the dashboard, since it only had 2 forward speeds. We had a ‘59 Galaxie 4-door sedan when I was a kid and it only had the Ford-O-Matic. The neighbors had a ‘59 Galaxie with the Cruise-O-Matic. Theirs was a 2-door hardtop (no B pillar) and was more richly optioned with power steering and brakes as well. Ours had “Armstrong” steering (not power) and my poor mom who was a little gal really had to wrestle with that big steering wheel.

      @@zulumax1 Hi Zulu, yeah, I vividly remember our ‘59 Galaxie. It was a color called “Geranium” which was a pinkish orange, like the flower it was named for. After my dad traded it in for a ‘67 Fairlane (which got handed down to me when I was a teen), the ‘59 Galaxie stayed in the family, as my uncle bought it from the small-town dealer my dad traded it in to!! Our Galaxie was lightly optioned. It had the 292 cid V8 and Fordomatic and AM Radio, but that was it. No power, no AC. Big car, easily seated 6!

(Or gutted with a modern unit inside the large original 59 case)? Thx again Lou!

      @montymatilda 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't know what you are referring to??
      The Skyliner began as a Fairlane 500, denoted on the quarter fins. Then in comes Galaxie and they were all labeled Galaxie on the quarter fin. You could only get a Skyliner in the Galaxie series now. The Fairlane 500 had to remain on the trunk lid since the first 0 was the cover for the key/lock. I think Ford was just too cheap to redesign a proper trunk lid that said Galaxie. You can also find plenty of Fairlane 500s with all the chrome on this one that says Fairlane 500 on the quarters and have a different roof treatment. Confusing isn't it? In the video, you will note when he shoots the right side of the instrument panel, the chrome says Fairlane 500 and a gold Galaxie metal piece is glued on below it on the door. A rather shoddy thought process on Fords part to compete with the Chevrolet Impala. However, Ford still outsold Chevrolet in this year and '57. Only times in the '50s and only once in the '60s. The Galaxie series was just that. No '500' in '59, '60 or '61, then the Fairlane 500 mid-size came out in 1962. That is when we got the Galaxie and the Galaxie 500 at the same time. They both had trouble putting the name together in the video but I see the name of the video is correct. The cloth top convertible would have been 'Ford Fairlane 500 Galaxie Sunliner'.

      Well, we (my parents--I was 11) had a brand new '59 in '59, but it was almost the cheapest model, the Custom 300. That was the model that had the quarter panel decorations you referred to. As for the car in Lou's video, it seems the proportions of the '59 body worked better with the long rear deck of the retractables. The '57s had this vast expanse of slab sided sheet metal...

    • @montymatilda
      @montymatilda 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edgarcook9607 Yes, you are correct. In my comment I had forgotten the Custom 300 completely. They also had a plain Fairlane model (not the 500) that had the script Fairlane in that position of the quarter panel. I have only seen a couple. I don't think they made many. IIRC, they also had a plain Custom that had no badging at all, below the Custom 300.
