    This man is very thorough and quite informative as an instructor. As for myself I don't know the difference between a screw and a nail. But after watching Kyle Hogge I feel as if I can do this with absolutely no problem at all. Thank you, Kyle, it was generous on your part to take the time out to inform the world.

    I replaced my last set of springs in 2012. I took the 25k cycle springs which came twice as long as the original. There still going but I have a frayed cable making the door uneven. I guess it stretched. This is a heavy 1968 door and I have to remove the bottom bracket to attach the cable. Don't see that type in the video's. At 78 now hope it's my last door repair.

      +Kyle Hogge (DIY Garage Door Parts) I'll try! Hey, while I have you online- how can I tell the age of a spring? I moved into an older place and my door is old and out of balance. The springs need some added torsion. I'm going to add a half turn to both, but, they look old as well. Are all springs supposed to be smooth? Mine and the associated hardware almost looks rusty. I'll post a quick video of it, if you have time to look at it?

    If you have two springs on your door are they typically the same minus the left and right wind?

  • @diygaragedoorparts
    @diygaragedoorparts  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    it is most likely .207 but I would count 40 coils and then divide your measurment by 40

  • @OriginalAstroTard
    @OriginalAstroTard 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    A little confusing, in that (1) you counted 20 coils, but then backed up to the space between the 19th and 20th coil for your measurement. (2) When determining if it's a "right" or "left" hand wind, it can "appear" to be both depending on which end you look at. If it's the end used to "tension" the spring, it winds under the bottom; if I look at the opposite end, it wind's over the top. So which end should I look at to determine right or left, and is it count 20 or count 20 then back up to the space between the 19th and 20th coil and measure? Because if I measure to the space between 19 and 20, it's 5", if I measure to the end of the 20th coil, it's 5 1\4". Sorry friend, I'm a detail freak and for me information king (and drives me nuts at times...lol).

    • @diygaragedoorparts8206
      @diygaragedoorparts8206 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No and yes, when you changed wire diameters the length changes and has to be calculated. We can do that for you. When you go up in diameter you have to increase the length to weaken the lifting power. It has to be the same lifting power or it will not balance and you'd never get the door back down from the up position. If you think that you can just put fewer turns on the spring then it will balance down low but start getting heavy at the hallway point. When you move it higher then cables start coming off the drums because you do not have any more spring tension.
      We can calculate a higher cycle sitting set up for you, we just need to know the size of your spring the you have.

    • @diygaragedoorparts8206
      @diygaragedoorparts8206 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not always. If you want to match them up it has to be calculated. In you case with the springs you gave, (if they are 2" id) it would be.
      234x2x32 it will also give you about 3000 cycles extra of lifespan verses what your old setup was.

      So if one is 225x1.75x28 and one is 234x1.76x30 then to do a matched pair you would need 234x1.75x32

    • @diygaragedoorparts8206
      @diygaragedoorparts8206 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you sure you're not looking at the red paint on the end of the winding cone? If so that's just telling you it's a right-hand line spring. The red paint should be on the actual spring coils but you can't always rely on the color code. So if you measured correctly and it's 275 that would be a 273 wire diameter

    Is it OK if I install a heavier gauge spring than the one I am replacing just for good measure?

    • @diygaragedoorparts
      @diygaragedoorparts  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Phillip, you don't want to go the a heavier wire diameter because it will be too strong for you door it will try to lift up on its own with the correct number of turns you are supposed to have on it. Your top panel will over time crack and buckle and your gears in your opener will wear out prematurely. If you take a couple of turns off of this heavier spring set up you will be causing the the door to be heavy at the top of the opening cycle because it doesn't have enough turns on it. So this will also damage your top panel and wear out your opener, also you will probably make the cables unwind from the drums where all you spring tension will be gone when the door is in the up position causing you door to get racked or go crooked in the track. Best thing is to stick with what you have, and if you want something to last longer add the 8yr warranty on our site and you will get a high cycle set up calculated for you based on the spring you ordered.
