Dalek Jast: the Cult of Skaro's neglected Dalek

  • Dalek Jast, one of the four members of the legendary Cult of Skaro, definitely gets the short end of the stick when it comes to screen time. But why is that?
    All footage is the property of the BBC. Music by Frank Klepacki (Gloom - C&C Tiberian Sun soundtrack)

    I agree with the majority of the comments: Jast was probably a more scientific Dalek since he notices tiny details - the Doctor in the background - and as mentioned was the one who injected Sec with the syringe.
    He also doesn't fire his gunstick in the battle between the Human-Daleks and leaves most of the killing to Thay, a proven warrior unit, hinting that Jast probably didn't see much action - or was too busy processing wtf just happened!

    I personally believe that Dalek Jast should have been used more or at least had more lines because (like you mentioned in the video) the other cult members had done something significant, and then you have Jast on the sidelines just going along with what the others were doing.

    I like to imagine each one in the cult has a distinct role.
    Sec is the leader.
    Caan is the infiltrator. He's the one they send to manipulate aliens to be become their paws.
    Thay is the soldier. They send him to scout whatever area they've arrived in.
    Jast is the reserve. Quetly assisting the others, like Sec in his experiment or later helping Caan in attacking after Thay was crippled.

  • @crimsong8068

    I think Jast is neglected because, like Caan and Thay, you can't tell them apart aside from their voices. It would have been neat for those three to have features/colors that differentiated them from other Daleks. Otherwise, they just seem like important Daleks because we're told they're important Daleks, (show, don't tell.)
    It would also make sense storywise... Guard Daleks get unique color schemes, but not a unit "Above the Emperor himself?" Seems unlikely...

      Plus, they’re supposed the be more individualistic than the average Dalek anyhow. I find it doubtful that they wouldn’t think about personalizing their casings

    • @JakeSnake07
      @JakeSnake07 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Obviously the IRL reason is that the BBC was already pushing the budget with one newly painted dalek.
      I feel like the cult should have had color schemes that match previous generations, even with the modern casings, similar to how Sec is black because classic Daleks were usually led by a Black Dalek commander.

    • @legobi_wan_kenobi
      @legobi_wan_kenobi ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@JakeSnake07 I don't think budget was a factor to be honest, I think they just didn't consider giving any of the others a unique colour scheme. Originally the only reason why Sec had a black casing was because he was the leader, the more refined differences in the personalities of the Cult didn't really come into play until Daleks in Manhattan / Evolution of the Daleks (thank Helen Raynor for that) by which time the colour schemes had already been established

    I feel like Jast is the scientist among the cult. As you stated he’s the one who administers the solution to Dalek sec. And he notices details about Dalek secs transformation. He’s also the one with the weakest personality out of the three. Jast is the diehard Dalek at its core. He follows the Dalek cause literally till his death. He sounds excited by the thrill of war and sounds like an errand child screaming whenever someone insults the thing he loves. Xx

    It's strange that Jast seems the most scientific onscreen, when Thay is the member who canonically ran a research station, while Jast was in the Outer Rim Defensive Battalion. I wouldn't mind if a future story retconned/swapped their backstories.

  • @supergeorge8603
    @supergeorge8603 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    I feel Jast was the scientist of the cult, which would make sense since he used the syringe attachment and he oversaw the status of the Genesis Ark and kept the other cult members updated on it. Jast was seemingly the one that stayed back at the lab with Sec when Thay and Caan went out with the pig slaves. Also, at 1:58 I seem to recall a previous comment on another video where you agreed it’d make sense that Thay died first in the battle, how come you changed your mind that one?

    • @dalekbumps
      @dalekbumps  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      As far as I'm aware it's actually Dalek Thay who stays behind in the lab with Sec, I'm pretty sure you can see his damaged back panels in the wide shot when Dalek Sec says "commence the attack" - the assumption is that Thay is unable to fly due to the damage to his casing
      And to answer your question about the order in which they die, I watched the scene back in extreme slow motion and it confirms without a doubt that Jast is the first to die. Even if one ignores the identification marks on their domes (which should be the case anyway, as they're completely useless for identifying which Dalek is which in Series 3 due to various continuity errors) the positioning of the props and the angle of the camera proves that Jast dies first, followed by Thay.

    • @supergeorge8603
      @supergeorge8603 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m talking about more in Daleks in Manhattan when Daleks Caan and Thay go out to round up more humans to be converted into pig slaves or to be used in the Final experiment and also when they chase the Doctor and Co out of the lab, Jast stays behind on both of those occasions.
      Also when talking about the order they died in, on the clip at 2:01 you can see most of the firepower is being concentrated on Thay. I always assumed Thay exploded first due to the Dalek having a deeper voice before destruction and the second to die had a higher pitched one, and the odds of Thay dying before Jast seemed pretty high due to his already damaged casing.
      Idk, I’ve never been able to understand personally how Jast died first, but then again the camera angles and continuity don’t help when trying to identify the two daleks. My brother actually pointed out to me that Jast was killed first and I never believed him.

    • @dalekbumps
      @dalekbumps  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@supergeorge8603 Ah I see, yes you're right about it being Jast who stays behind in those situations, though it's frustratingly difficult to tell because the episode is riddled with continuity errors regarding the props - the ID tags are never right, and for some scenes Dalek Thay still has his back panels because they filmed certain scenes before making the modification (the most obvious example being when Caan and Thay conspire against Sec in the sewer)
      It's obvious that the production team didn't really give much thought as to which Dalek was which during filming, you're right to say it doesn't make much sense for Jast to die first (I would personally much prefer it if Thay died first, that would have been a nice detail since he was damaged) but from what we seen on-screen it's pretty clear Jast dies first. If I ever get to write the official novelisation of DiM/EotD then I'll be sure to include that Thay dies first, followed by Jast

      @supergeorge8603 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@dalekbumps I love Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks and at some point with enough resources and when I get enough time, I’d love to recreate the Battle scene from EotD in stop motion, I’d even buy a damaged Dalek figure that I can cut the top off and remove the appendages to simulate the Daleks exploding and I too would have Thay die first. DiM and EotD is such an underrated two-parter, I absolutely love it, mainly because of how the Cult of Skaro themselves are portrayed.

    Man, DiM/EotD is my favorite Dalek story ever. It is just so odd. The pig slaves remind me of ogrons or robomen, and almost everything about the story is an homage to Evil of the Daleks (Making new daleks that think and feel, a rebellion due to the Doctor's interference, etc.). It just feels like a love letter to classic Dalek stories. And all the excellent commentary from the daleks about the human race that is so chilling. Thay was more memorable of the three bronze Daleks in the cult for the initial contact with the two Cybermen at Torchwood and using the Dalekanium panels on the Empire State building as well as give him a unique action figure. Sec is memorable because he's the black Dalek, and goes through the hybridisation process.

    I feel like it would have been really neat if all of the cult had some black parts on em. Sek being all black as the leader, caan maybe having the 2nd most amount of black as the 2nd in command, and then jast and thay have either a black midsection or dome. Just something to make them immediately visually distinct

    John Rabe was a German businessman and a Deputy Group Leader of the Nazi Party who is best known for - ironically - helping to save the lives of around 250,000 Chinese people during the Rape of Nanjing, which was committed by the Japanese Army in December 1937 and January 1938.
    What does this have to do with Jast? No idea, but I feel like it’s not a coincidence that a Nazi squid alien was almost named after a famous Nazi.
    (Although my biggest question is whether or not John Rabe would have been willing to save the lives of 250,000 *Jewish* people as well…)

Jast has the deep voice whilst carrying Sec but then suddenly he has a high voice right before shooting sec by accident. It also doesn’t help that the actual props change between shots so the id badges on the domes that were quite consistent in Doomsday to signify which Dalek is which changes within single shots so it’s actually impossible to tell which is which.
