That was very good. I was in grade 4 or 5 and we had to read the book on the Donnelly's. First night we were to read two chapters. I read the entire book that night because it was so interesting. I will have to make the trip the Lucan one day.
On another note, you would think that the campground would have told you to pick your own site when you were the only ones there. Safe travels!!!

@@AngelFaceMotoRider I'm sorry - I know I commented just above (and that these posts now are 6 months old). I do long distance riding as well, and if you're up over Lake Superior's lake head again, there's a provincial park called Neys. Neys was a POW camp during WW2 (there were several) and has a very interesting story. Without getting too detailed, there was the POW camp as well as a village for the guards and their families. Everything was open, and many of the POWs were conscripted Ukrainian's and German's, many of whom were farmers. The camp had a very low number of guards to prisoners and it was believed (correctly) that it was too desolate of an area for a prisoner to escape in the summer (they'd get eaten alive by mosquitos, and the brush was too thick to go too far too fast) or in the winter (they'd freeze to death). Apparently one prisoner did steal a canoe and escape, but was found sitting on a beach in a bay further down the lake, waiting to be picked up by guards looking for him after realizing he was truly in the middle of no-where. After the war the POW's were sent home. Seeing how 'hospitable' and barren Canada was, many of the POW's returned to Canada as Ney's was almost like a 'trial run' (I hate to call it that) for homesteading here. They in turn brought their families, and is part of the reason there's such a large Ukranian population in northern Ontario and Manitoba (this how my brother-in-law's family came to Canada - if it wasn't for him I would never have known this fact and visited the park). Ney's is also a gorgeous park with a really neat little museum run by University students seeking summer employment.

30:35 I realize this video is about a year old now - but I just stumbled across your channel. Interesting fact about the gravestone (and why the other guy is so close to him) is that's not the exact spot the Donnelly's lie. As you can see on the stone, people have chipped off pieces to take home as 'souvenirs'. The Donnelly's are in same cemetery, but being concerned about grave robbers, souvenir collectors, people seeking a 'revenge trophy', the stone is not placed above the actual bodies. Apparently. Another interesting fact is the family were very rough, and very disliked (probably stemming more from the Protestant vs Catholic issue) but they still did cause their fair share of issues. Rumour has it that while the Donnelly's had their trouble, not every crime/issue they were accused of, they committed. They were almost like a scapegoat of a family and they were the easy out because they were already so disliked. Not saying they were angels by any stretch, but crimes were pinned (apparently) on them that they had no role in. It's a crazy interesting story, and another small-town Ontario folklore. Also - cool little brewery nearby which shares their name. Completely worth a stop if you're ever back. Very nice little channel by the way - keep up the good work.

Is the original headstone still by the museum? I know it use to be. Where did you camp?

Didn't see any headstone by the museum and staff there were giving us a tour and never mentioned it. Would definitely have liked to see it.
