This is one of the best putting videos out there. David Orr is a genius. David is able to distill putting theory so so well. Eric hit a gold mine in this series.
That 24-minute lesson was amazing. More useful information there than I've seen in MANY putting instruction videos combined. I'll be watching this everyday for the next 5 days to ingrain this in my head! Mr. Orr is a genius! 👍
Thank you. I am Mr. Three Putt. I go from birdie to bogey and I used the "bad putter setup" Now I'll change my setup routine and I understand the backstroke, impact, and follow through. And most of all I'll practice, practice, practice.
This video is gold. All those swing mechanics videos one watch on TH-cam and can’t bring their scores down by even 3 strokes whereas this alone can fix more than 5 for high handicappers. Good stuff
Came back to watch the David Orr’s videos again with Eric as my putting needs help:) Just a simplified set of crucial instructions that can make/brake your day on the greens! So happy I saved them this time to review more frequently:)
David Orr was awesome. This entire putting series to this point is great. However, this video is the best instructional putting video I have seen. Using the same force on the downswing as in the takeaway, is contrary to everything I’ve been taught. Thank you Eric!
Eric, this whole series with David is fantastic. Will be watching it over and over again as well as telling my golfing friends to do the same. Thank you, and David as well, for the great information
Great instruction! The real lesson in this video is showing us how to relax over the ball to insure we hit it as intended! An Anti-Frankenstein move!!!
I started last year putting under my right shoulder I make my stroke from the back of the shoulder. I let it though the ball to my target on my intended line. It totally changed my putting. Now solid and a soft feel ! I hope this helps you
Another big speed killer in putting is selecting a putter that is way too f'n heavy! Brad Faxon, Ben Crenshaw, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Loren Roberts "The Boss of the Moss", and Tiger Woods and many, many other great putters, all use putters with headweights less than 330 grams. You might want to consider NOT drinking the Kool-Aid that all the major putter manufacturers are enticing you to drink...
Hey Terry! I would really need to see whats causing it to say for sure...could be several things. Send videos to www.cogornogolf.com or come see me in person so we can solve
I have never been a bad putter (amature) but listening to this video about putting is common sense, a lot went into the transition and the length of both strokes Yet nothing was mentioned about what hand/arm too use! Putting uphill and using a bit harder in the transition is only going to create a pull or a fade towards the hole! The minute you try to force a putt, the less chance of you succeeding for sure!
Kudos to Mr. Orr for mentioning the genius Geoff Mangum. Geoff Mangum's OPTIMAL PUTTING explains that of the three rhythm's, 1.short and accelerate 2.long and decelerate and 3. pendulum rhythm; short and accelerate, and long and decelerate are both considered "spastic" by the instinctive brain. Only the pendulum rhythm will promote instinctive distance control. "What works and why in cooperation with the instincts on the putting green", is a study worth starting.
That was mindblowing. Im 100% the guy who has the tiny little backstroke and accelerates through. I push the ball to the hole instead of letting the backstroke determine the distance
I have stopped this at 6:20 I cannot believe I had a lesson at 9 o’clock this morning costing me £27.50 and at least I know it was worth it this morning as you have said exactly the same thing so far !! looking forward to hearing the rest of this to find out whether I am doing the right drills or not thanks Eric so glad I have you on my side awesome just awesome 👏
I’m loving these putting videos. It’s not the sexiest part of the game but it probably is the easiest way to make the biggest improvement (at least in my game). Thanks to both of you! I’ll take all I can get.
Eric. This is for me. I played a course with greens running 11 and to make matters worse I left all my appriach shots on top of the hole! But how does one control stroke length on fast greens, breaking puts?
Hey there! I go through how to build those exact skills in my Ultimate Putting Practice Plan👍 Access to it comes free with a Cogorno Golf membership...or you can purchase it here: ericcogornogolf.podia.com/eric-cogorno-s-ultimate-putting-practice-plan I think that will be the best place to start! Thanks so much for watching the channel!
I have watched this video many times and can appreciate the advise. However, as one who uses a slightly open stance, my ball placement is more towards the inside of my front foot, not in the center as you and David were demonstrating. Did he mention at any time that he only recommends a square stance and the ball in the center of the stance? Thanks
Seems like sound information. Looking forward to practicing with it. I've been striving to move the putter on a "straight" line back and through. Guess not. PIZZA pie instead. :)
Hi Eric, great video series with David. I would be interested in David's thoughts on grip pressure. Having watched so many putting videos, the traditional advice is always 'light grip' and 'stroke' the putter. This is the first video I've seen where the word 'force' has been used when talking about putting. I wonder if with all of David's research if he has found that many poor putters try to have too light a grip pressure as is commonly taught. Thanks for the video.
Surprising they didn't speak about grip pressure changes. The Bane of the amateur golfer. 90 pc of golfers have a grip pressure change through the stroke
Anything wrong with extending the index fingers down the sides of the grip? I have better feel with that grip especially after I switched to my Odyssey 2 ball with Superstroke grip.
For me, I sometimes can feel a slight loop towards ball line at the top of my backswing. My set up is sound and always wondered why I feel this. Now my guess is that I am not transitioning with enough force causing the loop back to the insight. The loop is very small feeling, not a big actual loop. Any insight on this? Thank you Eric and David. I have been a member on Flatstick before! It’s really awesome! Kevin
Hey Kevin! Thanks for being with us! For me (can't speak for David) I would have to see your stroke to say for sure exactly why that would be happening, what's causing it, how much it matters, how to fix, etc... If you don't get it sorted see if you can get with David or check out www.cogornogolf.com so I can see a video and we will get it sorted!
Kevin Monaghan I felt a small loop in my backswing too. Took it away slightly outside. Could NOT work it out. Using a mirror, I moved one ball further away at address. Straightened my take away issue out instantly.
Cool video Eric. Can you elaborate on the force back and in transition being the same? Do you mean the level of force applied? Or with the same hand (or hands, shoulders, whatever you feel)?
Thanks, Bryan! My interpretation of the information discussed during the 2 day conference.... The force you FEEL you put into the club to get it going back you would feel roughly the same in transition and downswing. "level of force applied".....yes.......from my interpretation. That force (I) felt with my hands.....but of course there are other factors contributing as you mentioned.
Level putt, maximum acceleration is at impact and at the center of the arc. Arc of the entire stroke is symetrical. But how is the arc on the forward side of the putt after impact symetrical to the arc on rearward side of the arc before impact. Would not the energy that is transferred to the ball during impact cause the arc on the forward, departure side of the ball to be slightly less than the arc that approached the ball? How is the energy that is transferred to the ball accounted for in the measurement of the total arc of the putting stroke? I guess it depends where the center of the arc really is. In the middle of the ball, at the rear side of the ball, at the forward side of the ball? Even a little before the ball so there is a slight upward stroke to the ball at impact, as some putting pros advocate to help lift the ball out of its "depression" caused by its weight upon the grass of the putting surface.
First time I saw someone putt with a short back and long accelerating follow through, I tried and dismissed it very quickly. I didn't get how it worked for anyone. Less time to get offline with a short stroke i assume but i had ZERO feel
A TH-cam channel which regularly posts 3x per week with 30000 views uses a local PGA pro who gave the 'push drill', I got seriously slagged off for my comments, there is so much terrible instruction out there, your posts are a revelation.

Best thing I ever bought was the Dave Pells putting track. Made me relax my hands on the putter !!!
Love it!

Thanks, Nirad! Appreciate it....David is great!
Greatest thing I've ever seen. Reminds me of Geoff Mangum stuff, who transformed my putting from terrible to great.
Appreciate it, Nick! Glad to hear that! David is the man!!
Best putting advice I've ever heard! Thanks very much.
Love it! Our pleasure...David is great!!
So much great info here. See myself in so many wrong areas. Hope to improve.
Thanks for this video. Chow, Dave
Thanks, Dave---great stuff from David....hope it serves you well
This is so scientifically great. Thank You so much.
Thank you Paul! Our pleasure!
Awesome... thanks David n thanks Eric!!!
Our pleasure my friend!!
Eric this video has really helped by putting. Do you have any suggestions to stop the putter head from wobbling in the backswing?

Hey Matt!
Thank you for the kind words!
That's a good question. Will ask him next step we chat!
How does this look from a player's eye view? Would be great to see a video of the stroke taken with eyeglass mounted camera.
Great idea! Maybe next time!
Love this vid!

The poor guy in the background at 2:00 demonstrating perfectly what NOT to do 🤣
Surprising they didn't speak about grip pressure changes. The Bane of the amateur golfer. 90 pc of golfers have a grip pressure change through the stroke
For sure----that was a big topic at the putting seminar I attended before this....I think that is somewhere within other ones we did (I think)
Anything wrong with extending the index fingers down the sides of the grip? I have better feel with that grip especially after I switched to my Odyssey 2 ball with Superstroke grip.
Anything goes if it improves your performance over time and doesn't cause detriment anywhere else.
So I say no, nothing wrong given the above!
