think a lot of you aren't aware of the story of this song. The song is about 2 imprisoned soldiers in England, 1 was to be beheaded, the other was sent back to Scotland as a free man. This is why the song goes, "you take the high road and I'll take the low", the low road is what we call being dead sometimes. The high road is over the hills. Then the next line is "and I'll be in Scotland before you" meaning he's going to be in heaven/Scotland. Its about the battle of Culloden in the 1700s. We sing it at weddings, funerals and any chance we can at parties. It's to let the English and the rest of the world know that we will always be free as long as we have Scotland in our hearts.

Thanks so much for the info! My little boy (and I, too) just loves this song, and this version especially. He was very glad to know the story (and sad, too, of course). I always knew one of the two was dead but did not know they were prisoners or their situation or that it related to such a famous (and devastating) battle.
This is my Scottish grandmothers favorite song. She is 95 born in Glasgow, she cried happy tears hearing your version. Thank you for making a Highland lass feel happy again.
The low road is death and the high road life so that's why they'll never meet again....very deep song, and beautiful (i really love heavy music but a good song is s good song no matter the style).... Cheers mate.
I have Scottish ancestry, & my MiL lived in Scotland for the first 2 years of her life, if there was one place in the world I could travel to, it would be Scotland (from Australia)

I'm of Irish ancestry...and I understand all too well your feelings, because I feel that also. This song tugs at your heart like almost none other. Much like Sinead singing "Danny Boy". 😢
Cool story: this song has been stuck in my head for something like 10 years. I couldn't remember any words, just the tune. I had no way of finding it and no one u hummed it for could place it. Then, Pandora accidentally made me a Celtic station I didn't ask for. THIS song started playing and I literally yelled when I realized that this is it. The song I thought I'd never hear. It's beautiful.
I'm a civil war reencator. We are the 79th New York Highlanders. Every night we will sit around the fire and sing good Scottish songs, this is one of my favorites. And it's so great
My grandpa passed away a few days ago and it has been really hard. I went through our past messages online and stumbled upon a link he sent me a few years ago to this video. Ive loved and listened to this version of the song for years and I had completely forgotten that my grandpa did too. Listening to it now helps with the healing. Thank you ❤️
I'm not Scottish but English and yet I find the Irish and Scottish songs so beautiful and they touch the heart of all who allow theirs to be open and receiving. I had great grandparents and parents and now they've all passed on. It's music like this song (and his one Shenandoah) that brings a teary eye to the listening ear.
Hope you are okay now. You have to visit my home town Football Club 1. Fc Köln to hear our Hymne. Maybe it would be beautiful for you when 50.000 people sing it.
I've heard that Haydn and Beethoven both did arrangements of a number of Scottish folk tunes, but of course that was 200 years ago or more. If you're musically inclined, it might be interesting to find some of them and update the arrangements for modern listeners.
To you who have fun memories of grandmothers and others singing this song and who have Dementia or memory problems, Play the song for them. If you do some research you will find that music in general and music that is particular to an individual person does miraculous things for those persons suffering dementia, Alzheimer's and memory issues. Just try it.
I used to work with dementia and Alzheimer's patients and we had this one patient who mumbled all the time, but when you played anything by the Eagles, he would sing in a beautiful tenor voice.
Anonymous Libertarian research shows that music is a wonderful medicine. There was an 87 year old man that couldn’t remember his wife, but they put him in front of a piano and he could play a song he learned when he was 8 years old. He didn’t remember the song until he was finished playing it. It has nothing to do with tissue in his case, it has to do with muscle memory. And that is why you can still do something you haven’t done in years. I played clarinet in 7th grade, and switched to choir up until now. I’m a senior in choir at my school, and I’m a soprano. I picked up a clarinet last week and was still able to play my solo for solo and ensemble from 6 years ago.
@@mamadawn22 uh hi uh, one of my aunts passed last year and it was suspected she developed dementia due to the losses of several family members in rapid succession by myself and my grandmother. Any thoughts?
@@lizgawin899 I'm not a doctor, just worked with Alzheimer's and Dementia patients as a nurse. However, if you research those two diseases, both of them are progressive. In the case of your Aunt, she may have already been showing signs and symptoms of the disease and the stress of losing several family members in rapid succession could have caused her to decline very quickly. I'm truly sorry for your loss.
+Krittika J It's basically a story about a soldier telling you about his memories. The 'Road' bit is basically referencing his death hence the 'never meet again' line. I believe anyway
My eyes fill with tears at this song, thinking of the Brave lads who charged into the mouth of English Cannon at Culloden Moor for Scotland and freedom. May they R.I. P.
My wife (who is of Scottish blood) and I traveled to Scotland in 2007 and on our trip actually walked on the Culloden Battlefield (outside of Inverness). To stop and think that so many died there, we stopped and had a silent prayer....
Song makes me sad because my oldest sister sang it to me when I was young she has been gone for a few years now and I know I will never hear her sing it again 💔 😢
Im Mexican, and this is one of those songs once you listen to, you get all hooked up to because of its beauty. It really takes you to the highlands. Forgotten,...mmm, no way... I don't think it will ever be.
This gives me goosebumps every time, my great grandma was Scottish. I guess it doesn't take much Scottish blood to make your heart swell at this tune.❤
My father was born in Aberdeen Scotland and I remember as a child hearing him sing his songs from Scotland and this was one of them. Thanks for the memory.
The song may be Scottish - but it's something we all know and understand deep within our hearts. Love is eternal. The reason this song is so wonderful is because the notes are happy, proud, and determined despite the context. It's a perfect mingling of happiness and sadness. It is comfort and loss.
I’m crying, with tearful eyes, red nose, and shivering lips. Peter, you resurrected me. I was just living, not alive. Now, I’m in love un-fathomable with a mystical man/essence. This love is given by your voice. Where have you brought me to! What have you done? You have opened the gates of my soul. I’m listening to you on loop; there is no escape from your voice, I don’t want an escape. I owe this happiness, this pain, this euphoria to you. Thank you so much, Peter!
I first visit and lived in Scotland for 6 months in my youth and now 38 years later and living a continent away, I still often tell myself :” My heart is not here. My heart is in the highlands a chasing the deer, among the bens, lochs, glens and the heart-centered folks”………I am now well into my senior years and am currently revisiting this majestic land . Scotland has not changed and its magic still alive and people still warm, kind and friendly. I am seriously thinking about moving here and live out my remaining days in this land that connects heaven and earth. More than happy to swop the sun of California for the overcast sky of bonnie Scotland , a place that helps me stay in my heart and connects with nature and find peace.
By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond When me and my true love will never meet again On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond O ye'll take the high road and I'll take the low road And I'll be in Scotland afore ye But me and my true love will never meet again On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond I mind where we parted on yon shady glen On the steep, steep side of Ben Lomond Where in soft purple hue, the Heiland hills we view And the moon comin' out in the gloamin' O ye'll take the high road and I'll take the low road And I'll be in Scotland afore ye But me and my true love will never meet again On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond The wee bird may sing and the wild flowers spring And in sunshine the waters are sleeping: The broken heart will ken nae second spring again So the world does not know how we're grievin' O ye'll take the high road and I'll take the low road And I'll be in Scotland afore ye But me and my true love will never meet again On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond
O braw Charlie Stewart, dear true, true heart, Wha could refuse thee protection, Like the weeping birk on the wild hillside, How gracefu he looked in dejection.
Swaggeh dude I'm jealous. I'm homeschooled, so the main thing we lack is a BIG choir (meaning I'm one of two students...). My church also doesn't have an established choir, so it's a lose-lose situation. Miss being in a big choir tho.
I come back to this all the time but I remember the first time I showed this to my mom. She started crying immediately and I wasn't sure why. Turns out my grandad ( who is of Scottish descent ) used to sing this to her all the time when she was a child. She wants this song played at her funeral so as sad as it is ive practiced this for years so I can be the one to sing it when the unfortunate time comes.
Really love this version. I traveled Scotland some years ago, driving from Inverness around the lochs, hiking in the Aviemore area. I went to Culloden in recognition the of battle. Reminded me of Gettysburg. Beautiful country and enjoyed talking with the people.
+William Gray Can I ask you a Question as a Scot? In Canada do they teach you that Alexander Graham Bell (inventor of the telephone) was Canadian because I have a Canadian friend who came here for uni who swears by it but that isn't true.
+TheSpacecraftX according to wikipedia he was born in Scotland but lived in Canada for about fifty years. I'd count it. Of course I'm Canadian too, and we love to claim everybody we can
My grandmother used to sing this song when I was a child, we walked somwhere together when travelling and i walked on a higher way than her. As a child I never understood the meaning (i am german), and till today I never heared or knew the full song. With this song I remember the great time together we had when I was younger and she, too. Thank you for the grat music you are making, I really enjoy listen to it. The harmony your songs have amaze me every time. Best wishes from Berlin, Germany
If you look up the song, there are several theories on the meaning of the song, several of them rather sad, but nothing will change how beautiful it is or the cherished memories people have that came from it.
Loch Lomond is about two Scotsmen who were captured by the English. One was killed (they hadn't done anything wrong, other than being Scottish clansmen), and the other was sent to tell the Scottish about it. The high road is the road for the living. The low road is the road traveled by the dead.
BubbaFilms play it to her seemly it's sooths them the tune may jog some memories I totally understand as my grandma had this just remember though she may not remember you she love you non of less :)
BubbaFilms make sure you learn it and sing it regularly. My grandmother had dementia and I know how quickly stuff like that becomes all the more important xx
My great grandmother was 104 when she died a few years back and she could barely remember any of the 1940's it was kinda sad to watch her try and remember:(
my dad used to sing this song to me when I was a kid. He passed away last year, and I still sing it to myself when I miss him. his friends took half of his ashes back to Scotland for us. ill be taking the high road soon, dad
I know this post is several years old, but I clicked on this because to be truthful, I have never heard a man sing this song before and I love the song. I was absolutely stunned with pure joy when I heard it. Its just magic. I thank you
This is absolutely amazing. The first time I heard it, I was at my best friends memorial service. This song fit him so well...and I truly believed he was my true love. I loved him more than anything. I can’t listen to this song without crying, but that’s alright. It’s a beautiful piece and you are truly talented.
I am personally insecure when it comes to my voice, but it is pretty good overall I was playing a VR game and I started singing to other people and it and they loved it that really helped boost my self confidence.
I fear singing infront of others. But i absolutely love to sing, I got busted a couple of weeks ago on the road with a metal song, by a fellow metal head. Made me feel good when he wanted to know if i was in a band so he could go see them. Nope this shy 30 year old just likes to sing to almost anything.
My High School graduation is tomorrow. Our mascot is the HighLander. During graduation, Loch Lomond and Scotland the Brave will be played in addition with the “traditional” graduation music. Hearing this song is bittersweet. It gives me hope of my future ahead but reminds me that I’ll likely never see many of my peers or teachers again. Beautiful, and well done. The emotions I’m experiencing are very strong.
I know this is an old tune done by countless numbers of people before and will be in the future, but what a BEAUTIFUL rendition. Truly heart-moving !! Thank you.
Last Saturday I get merried I was so stresful, my hands was shaking but I thought about something nice and it was that song singing by you couse I was listening you for relaxing myself before wedding. Thank you so much for your voice and your song I love them so much and they give me strength and power and I become braver person :) Greetings from Poland and best wishes for all your familly :)
The original lyrics might as well have been lost I can't find a single video of them being sung, the original song was written in 1746 by Donald McDonald the lyrics are entirely different lol now THAT is a "forgotten" scottish melody due to the rewrites in the 1900's lol but hey, who's keeping track? ;) LOCH LOMOND Trad. Scottish Original Donald MacDonald lyrics 1746 O whither away my bonnie May Sae late and sae dark in the gloamin? The mist gathers gray oer moorland and brae. O whither sae far are ye roamin? O, yell tak the high road and Ill tak the low. Ill be in heaven afore ye. For me and my true love will never meet again By the bonnie, bonnie banks o Loch Lomond. I trusted my ain love last night in the broom, My Donald wha loves me sae dearly. For the morrow he will march for Edinburgh toon, Tae fecht for his king and Prince Charlie. O, weel may I weep for yestreen in my sleep. We lay bride and bridegroom together. But his touch and his breath were chilly as the death, And his heartsblood ran red in the heather. (chorus) As dauntless in battle as tender in love, Hed yield neer a foot tae the foeman. But never again frae the fields o the slain Tae his Moira will he come by Loch Lomond. The thistle may bloom, the king hae his ain, And fond lovers will meet in the gloamin. And me and my true love will yet meet again Far above the bonnie banks o Loch Lomond. (chorus)
This reminds me of my grandma. When my brother and I were young kids she used to watch us on our summer vacations. She was always singing and a great vocalist at that. She is gone now but beautiful songs like this remind me of her and when times were a little simpler hanging out on those sunny days.
Seeing your two messages makes me dream sooooooooooo bad of a collab between the two of you, please make this happen!!!!!! What would so much talent be able to create? :D
Wow! Just happened to come across this song on the internet. I’ve listened to it at least 20 times continuously! Amazing sound. Incredible voices. Very moving. I’m now a fan. Never stop singing, Peter. You bring more to people’s lives than you can imagine.
this is the best version of this song (and the video too!) that I have ever heard - I could not help but get a smidget emotional hearing it with fond past personal memories alow
I remember... I,d been missing my dearest son listening this song and crying....I was along away... In Poland , Kraków. My Precious was in Scotland. I'd had an occasion to visit Scotland several years later. And everything I can say is : I love Scotland as much as Poland. What a wonderful land....
My mother played this song to me when I was a baby, a lot of my life is based off of Irish and Scottish sides of my family, though I was born in America. Even my name is Celtic.
+mafiacat88 Are you from Scotland? I am and it's honestly not all that bad sometimes. We do get nice weather on occasion. I think he did the best with what he could. I could well believe that the scenery in the video was from around Loch Lomond or maybe in the Trossachs in general. Also, Scotland is not grey. it may seem that way but in actuality it's very colourful just like any other place. All the different shades of green and brown on the hills and mountains. The purple of the heather. It is NOT grey. Oh and by the way, Loch Lomond looks very beautiful when the sun is setting so why shouldn't the sun be in one of the shots.
+Ace Pirosu FYI you only get chased by seagulls if you chase them and it only happens at the beach by the sea. In case you hadn't noticed Loch Lomond does not have a sea shore - mainly because it's a Loch. Also wind isn't something we've really been experiencing in extremes recently and even if we had been, there are places around Loch Lomond that can be fairly well sheltered from the wind. I get that you were probably trying to make a joke but that really doesn't come across for me. I try to never judge people or their countries by their stereotypes so I am quite upset when I find other people spreading them on the internet. Unfortunately this happens far too often. So please at least think about what you are saying before you post another comment.
+Kathryn Mackin As a lifelong Oregonian (as is Peter Hollens) and someone who has spend time in Scotland and has hiked the whole length of Loch Lomond on the West Highland Way - Oregon is very much like Scotland. Yes it rains a lot, but that leads to vibrant greens that fill the hills and makes you realize that you live in God's Country.
Thank you. I've never been to Oregon. I think I'd probably like it there if the weather is that similar because I can't really stand a lot of heat. Hiking is one of my family's favourite group activities and Loch Lomond is definitely one of our favourite places to go to do that.
+Peter Hollens this is amazing! Do you think you could do more songs like this? OOH even better, do safe and sound by Taylor Swift! I'm going to Scotland either this summer or next thanksgiving!!
I live in America, but in elementary school quite a few years ago, we were taught this song. I have no idea why, but this popped into my head the other day, so I looked it up, and I am so glad I did. What an amazing song!
I have always loved this song, ever since my childhood! I was adopted from Russia (I'm actually Ukrainian-Iranian) and my Adopted Mom is Irish, Scottish, English, Welsh, German and Polish. So this song sits very close to my heart! ❤
My grandfather, on my mother's side, is Scottish and he used to sing this song a lot. My mum first heard this cover and it really touched her as it reminded her of her dad. And now I absolutely adore this. I feel like I'm connecting to my Scottish heritage and my grandfather who died when I was a baby.
Listened to this with my 7 year old son. He asked what it meant, so I told him, then held him while he sobbed. Beautiful rendition, and it's now one of his favorites
Love the "ng" bit, it looks odd on video, but we can't argue with results! Some requests... Doctor Who (Main Theme, I Am The Doctor, This is Gallifrey.) Pixar (Married Life from Up, You've Got a Friend In Me, La Vie En Rose from WALL-E, The Incredibles Theme, A Bug's life, Inside Out... pretty much anything from any of their films.) Marvel Medley (Please do Ant-Man, it has a fabulous score, and you can't skip Captain America.) Nintendo Medley (Super Mario World Overworld, the original Pokémon theme (from the game), and maybe some Zelda.) Dick Van Dyke Tribute for his 90th birthday (Put On a Happy Face, Chim-Chim-E-Ree, and a song from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.) And a cover of John Cage's 4'33" for 4/1/2016. Thanks so much, Peter. God bless!
I was in the Scottish Highlands in the 1980s and I never forgot the kindness of the people there. I was born in New York and I remember this song and I woke up singing part of it and I had to look it up. I was just a little kid And this is a wonderful person. Aloha
+Annabelle Barber Yeah, my high school choir has done it twice at state competition (once before I was in it). The year after we did it, I heard about three different choirs sing it for competition (either districts or state).
My grandmother who married my grandfather who was born in Wallasey Cheshire UK used to sing me this song when I was little. Never knew the whole thing but what a beautiful song.
This is close to my favourite version. Must say, I'm a pretty big fan of yours Peter. Anyway, just went to the actual Loch Lomond on tour and it was magnificent. Our guide told us the story of this song and it was especially poignant. The story goes like this, in the 1600 and 1700s, there was a rebellion known as the Jacobite uprising which wanted the, some say, rightful king, the Catholic James back on the throne. Now during this uprising, two Jacobite soldiers were caught by the English and sent down, I believe, to London to be 'interrogated' and then executed. Back in those days, you could probably expect to your enhanced interrogation to be truly creative and absolutely brutal. Along the way, the soldiers discovered that the men were actually brothers so instead of executing both, they decided to play a (incredibly cruel) trick on them. They told the brothers that in the morning, they could either both be executed, or they could choose one to live. The cruel bit being that the brothers themselves had to decide. The lyrics 'you'll take the high road" refer to the mountain ways and the small roads which would have less patrols or so and allow the surviving brother to get home safely. The low road refers to the road where the spirits traverse. In the end, it was decided that the younger brother should go back to his wife and young children while the older brother would be executed. His last request was the lyrics of this song. 'Me and my true love will never meet again, on the bonny bonny banks of Loch Lomond'... I suppose the good news is that at least we know the second brother survived to bring us this song.
@@meridelmaxine4644 I think you've misread the details... The song would have been sung by the younger brother to his older brother's wife upon the younger brother's return home.
This is so incredibly beautiful, poignant, & emotional. No sugar added. I hear the pain. I hear the hope. This is why I love Traditional Gaelic music, sung the right way by singers who know how to sing. Bravo!
I am from Indonesia. Far far away from Scotland. Nevertheless, I am raised as a Presbyterian. And somehow this song resonates with my soul. Almost like a church hymn to my ear... God bless the land of Scotland!

Enjoying the music while sitting at the shores of Loch Lomond on our Scottish road trip. Thanks for the song
being Scottish this song makes me very happy and it's very close to my heart
same with me
+Krittika J It's basically a story about a soldier telling you about his memories. The 'Road' bit is basically referencing his death hence the 'never meet again' line. I believe anyway
SAME HERE!!!
Gregor Milne ikr, i was in loch Lomond just a couple of weeks ago too its beautiful
That'sMe Probably not mate
My mother sang this song to me while going to sleep for as long as I can remember. I’ve sang it to my children and now grandchildren. 💛
My Family ancestors were the Chisholm Clan we were at Culloden
Song makes me sad because my oldest sister sang it to me when I was young she has been gone for a few years now and I know I will never hear her sing it again 💔 😢
I played this for my grandfather just before he passed. It will always be on my playlist.
May he rest in peace. God bless you!
My twin sons just performed this piece as a duet for high school solo/ensemble. They are 15 years old. They made me cry...so does this version. Wow!
Im Mexican, and this is one of those songs once you listen to, you get all hooked up to because of its beauty. It really takes you to the highlands. Forgotten,...mmm, no way... I don't think it will ever be.
I'm in Loch lomond right now and this song is probably the most peaceful song in existence and the story behind it and the lyrics is so breathtaking
Man...... Look at his face while singing. Like he is telling you his story. What an emotional catch.... Lots of love 💓💓💓
My grandfather is from Scotland and is about to pass any time. I played this song for him today as he knows this song well.
As an "older" person , ( 75 +..) I discovered Peter Hollens -- ( and his wife , also a beautiful voice) LOVE many of your songs..Thank you..
By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond
When me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond
O ye'll take the high road and I'll take the low road
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond
I mind where we parted on yon shady glen
On the steep, steep side of Ben Lomond
Where in soft purple hue, the Heiland hills we view
And the moon comin' out in the gloamin'
O ye'll take the high road and I'll take the low road
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond
The wee bird may sing and the wild flowers spring
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping:
The broken heart will ken nae second spring again
So the world does not know how we're grievin'
O ye'll take the high road and I'll take the low road
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond
Wow love it
O braw Charlie Stewart, dear true, true heart,
Wha could refuse thee protection,
Like the weeping birk on the wild hillside,
How gracefu he looked in dejection.
Its in the description...
Almost the same song as red is the rose
I love lyric comments, but entertainment comnents r cool too
Dude I'm loving all these "folk"/"gospel"/"hymn" songs you're doing! Keep it up! It's really good.
Could you imagine if a choir did this. I would be in heaven 😍💙
Luke S +mark Our high school choir is doing it.. it's amazing, but not as amazing as Peter.
Swaggeh
dude I'm jealous. I'm homeschooled, so the main thing we lack is a BIG choir (meaning I'm one of two students...). My church also doesn't have an established choir, so it's a lose-lose situation. Miss being in a big choir tho.
+Swaggeh this arrangement?
Many cities have a youth choir. Check with your local arts council.
I sincerely hope that your mother will be with you for many more years to come. I have lost mine three years ago and it still hurts so much.
Really love this version. I traveled Scotland some years ago, driving from Inverness around the lochs, hiking in the Aviemore area. I went to Culloden in recognition the of battle. Reminded me of Gettysburg. Beautiful country and enjoyed talking with the people.
Beautiful, Peter! I just love your folk covers! I would love to hear you do "Out There" from "Hunchback of Notre Dame! I love that movie!
+Kurtsiecolferite S That would be amazing!
+Kurtsiecolferite S I second this!! :D
+Kurtsiecolferite S any of the songs from hunchback would be good. it really does have some great music.
+Kurtsiecolferite S The Hunchbak of ND has great music I I would love to hear him do a few!
+Kurtsiecolferite S is that movie good i have never seen it?
Love this. As a Scottish Canadian, I can't get enough. A toast to Peter Hollens. A cup of kindness for Auld Lang Syne.
Of course I'm Canadian too, and we love to claim everybody we can
NO they don't. they teach that he did work in Canada, people just confuse the two facts.
+Crystalvampire66 Seriously, 25K refugees was it? #CanadianPrideIGuess.
We don't always get it right. Though your point is largely irrelevant
Being of Scottish heritage myself, how could I NOT adore this song, perfectly sung?
Vor vielen Jahren war ich mit meinem Mann in Schottland. Dort haben wir zum ersten Mal diese wunderbare Ballade gehört. Ich werde es nie vergessen.
YES I LOVE THIS SONG!!!
+Brodie Smith did u get on the amazing race?
+Domino King yup
Brodie Smith YAY When is it?
+Brodie Smith YES!! Miss ya buddy!
+Peter Hollens it sown like a música of jesus
My grandmother used to sing this song when I was a child, we walked somwhere together when travelling and i walked on a higher way than her. As a child I never understood the meaning (i am german), and till today I never heared or knew the full song. With this song I remember the great time together we had when I was younger and she, too.
Thank you for the grat music you are making, I really enjoy listen to it. The harmony your songs have amaze me every time.
Best wishes from Berlin, Germany
this has nothing to do with the video but i doing a German project right now and berlin is beautiful
Mellimaus02 how old are you?
So cute my first time i heard this song was when i played violin.
My Grandmother used to sing this to me. She has dementia now and doesn't remember it :(
BubbaFilms play it to her seemly it's sooths them the tune may jog some memories I totally understand as my grandma had this just remember though she may not remember you she love you non of less :)
BubbaFilms make sure you learn it and sing it regularly. My grandmother had dementia and I know how quickly stuff like that becomes all the more important xx
My great grandmother was 104 when she died a few years back and she could barely remember any of the 1940's it was kinda sad to watch her try and remember:(
Fook That's sad
Now it is your turn to sing this song back to your grandma, I hope she can remember some other time. God blesses you all
my dad used to sing this song to me when I was a kid. He passed away last year, and I still sing it to myself when I miss him. his friends took half of his ashes back to Scotland for us. ill be taking the high road soon, dad
Simply beautiful. Scotland's answer to Danny boy. Two living songs that are timeless and better with each listen. Thanks Peter
P E R F E C T !!!!
You are the best, and you know it!!

Hope you're doing well!
I know this is an old tune done by countless numbers of people before and will be in the future, but what a BEAUTIFUL rendition. Truly heart-moving !! Thank you.
I sang this at my friends funeral and it brought me slight happiness as I knew that I had a song to remember her by.
I love how when it goes to his eyes, you can just tell he is doing what he loves. :)
Wow!! Your range is extremely extensive, I'm super jealous! I can only imagine the time you've put into your singing ability
In loving memory of the passing of my dear Father. Thankyou for sharing your Gift with us

I'm Korean but I love Scotland folk songs because of Peter Hollens :-D
Beautiful melody, harmony, and landscape!
same :)
This is fantastic. But in what universe is Loch Lomond a “forgotten” Scottish melody?
yeah, try telling that to Runrig! LOL!
The original lyrics might as well have been lost I can't find a single video of them being sung, the original song was written in 1746 by Donald McDonald the lyrics are entirely different lol now THAT is a "forgotten" scottish melody due to the rewrites in the 1900's lol but hey, who's keeping track? ;) LOCH LOMOND
Trad. Scottish
Original Donald MacDonald lyrics 1746
O whither away my bonnie May
Sae late and sae dark in the gloamin?
The mist gathers gray oer moorland and brae.
O whither sae far are ye roamin?
O, yell tak the high road and Ill tak the low.
Ill be in heaven afore ye.
For me and my true love will never meet again
By the bonnie, bonnie banks o Loch Lomond.
I trusted my ain love last night in the broom,
My Donald wha loves me sae dearly.
For the morrow he will march for Edinburgh toon,
Tae fecht for his king and Prince Charlie.
O, weel may I weep for yestreen in my sleep.
We lay bride and bridegroom together.
But his touch and his breath were chilly as the death,
And his heartsblood ran red in the heather.
(chorus)
As dauntless in battle as tender in love,
Hed yield neer a foot tae the foeman.
But never again frae the fields o the slain
Tae his Moira will he come by Loch Lomond.
The thistle may bloom, the king hae his ain,
And fond lovers will meet in the gloamin.
And me and my true love will yet meet again
Far above the bonnie banks o Loch Lomond.
(chorus)
Loch lomond is the gateway to eternal Scotland u Muppet. hame hame hame

This reminds me of my grandma. When my brother and I were young kids she used to watch us on our summer vacations. She was always singing and a great vocalist at that. She is gone now but beautiful songs like this remind me of her and when times were a little simpler hanging out on those sunny days.
Absolutely gorgeous :)
thanks bud
Seeing your two messages makes me dream sooooooooooo bad of a collab between the two of you, please make this happen!!!!!! What would so much talent be able to create? :D

Oh yes ! I would like very much to hear it too :D
He fits that so well, I'd love it
+RiverJane This would be amazing!
Wow! Just happened to come across this song on the internet. I’ve listened to it at least 20 times continuously! Amazing sound. Incredible voices. Very moving. I’m now a fan. Never stop singing, Peter. You bring more to people’s lives than you can imagine.
I am a flute player and when I get new music I always try to look up the vocals and stuff like that and now I found my new favorite song.
thank you for posting this. RIP Brother, Loch Lomond is waiting for ye'
This is one of my absolute favorite songs and this version gave me goosebumps and made me a bit teary. Thank you!
+jamieylnn It's one of mine as well! Glad you like it :)
this is the best version of this song (and the video too!) that I have ever heard - I could not help but get a smidget emotional hearing it with fond past personal memories alow
I remember... I,d been missing my dearest son listening this song and crying....I was along away... In Poland , Kraków. My Precious was in Scotland. I'd had an occasion to visit Scotland several years later. And everything I can say is : I love Scotland as much as Poland. What a wonderful land....
God bless you
My mother played this song to me when I was a baby, a lot of my life is based off of Irish and Scottish sides of my family, though I was born in America. Even my name is Celtic.
Dastardly Demon That's the coolest name I've ever heard lol
That is awesome, I am an Irish man myself
Land o' my heart forever. Scotland is awesome.
my family has many irish and scottish ancestors and i love the irish and scottish cultures but id say i lean more towards irish
That wasn't really scotland. Not grey, or rainy enough. I think I might have seen the sun in one of those shots.
+mafiacat88 Also Peter wasn't being blown off his feet or chased by seagulls. So fake.
Ich bekomme immer Gänsehaut, wenn ich dieses Lied höre..... I Love it sooo much😍
My great grandparents are origionally born and raised in loch lomond ... And i can honestly say that I felt this through my soul . thank you
Absolutely stunning. This song is often not done with a solemn tone like this and it really is far more appropriate.
Just stunningly beautiful.
It's 2020 and you're still absolutely breathtaking every time i listen to this.
This makes me so proud to be Scottish 💗 beautiful, so so beautiful Peter. Thank yoy

+Evynne Hollens You both are so cute :D
My grams taught me this song as a child many years ago. Ahhhh... so obscure. It popped into my head today. Beautiful
This song always moves me to the story, the lyrics and the melody... Thank you for touching me once again.
I live in America, but in elementary school quite a few years ago, we were taught this song. I have no idea why, but this popped into my head the other day, so I looked it up, and I am so glad I did. What an amazing song!
I showed this to my Mum only to discover that this song was apparently my late grandmother's favourite song.
Beautiful! ❤️ A tune we learned since elementary school.. in Taiwan..in Mandarin.. There is truly no boundary in music..
This song gave me chills! ❤️🏴
I mean. Lock Lomond isn't really a forgotten melody.. but I'll be damned I'm blown away by how amazing it sounds
Listened to this with my 7 year old son. He asked what it meant, so I told him, then held him while he sobbed. Beautiful rendition, and it's now one of his favorites
Wunderschön, Gänsehaut pur. Vielen lieben Dank

I was in the Scottish Highlands in the 1980s and I never forgot the kindness of the people there. I was born in New York and I remember this song and I woke up singing part of it and I had to look it up. I was just a little kid And this is a wonderful person. Aloha
Help me, I can't stop listening to this!
Sang this song as a little kid not knowing the real story behind the words. Heartbreakilng and still one of my favorites.
I've heard this song so many times. At state choir competition, mostly. It's nice to hear a bit of a different arrangement for once.
+Annabelle Barber Yeah, my high school choir has done it twice at state competition (once before I was in it). The year after we did it, I heard about three different choirs sing it for competition (either districts or state).
...I wish I had stayed in my high school choir. this song really helps me connect to my ancestors...
I'm so jealous xD
at drinking evening me, thx student clubs :)
My grandmother who married my grandfather who was born in Wallasey Cheshire UK used to sing me this song when I was little. Never knew the whole thing but what a beautiful song.
my name is kali and this is my grandad's favorit song but sadly he pass't awy 3 yrs ago and this song make's me so so happy I cry'd
How could this song be sung at his execution if the song is about him?
@@meridelmaxine4644 I think you've misread the details... The song would have been sung by the younger brother to his older brother's wife upon the younger brother's return home.
RIP Sean Connery, "Shaken but not stirred"
This is so incredibly beautiful, poignant, & emotional. No sugar added. I hear the pain. I hear the hope. This is why I love Traditional Gaelic music, sung the right way by singers who know how to sing. Bravo!
I learned how to play this song on my flute, but I didn’t learn the words until I came upon your video. I gotta say, this is amazing! I love it! 😊😍
Long live SCOTLAND & Ireland
Erin go Bragh! Alba gu brath!
God bless both
Amen to that lad :3
Och, aye! I'm 1/16 Scottish, enough to get me to the Scottish Games once in a while. Always fun!
I am from Indonesia. Far far away from Scotland. Nevertheless, I am raised as a Presbyterian. And somehow this song resonates with my soul. Almost like a church hymn to my ear... God bless the land of Scotland!
Wahh ada juga dari indo yang suka lagu ini 😃
My mom used to sing this song for me every night before bed (we are very Scottish) and it's so amazing to hear it come to life like this. Thank you!
