Richie is so sincere. He wears his heart on his sleeve. His sad, doe eyes could melt the most icy reluctance. It was a beautiful first encounter scene. Subtle and seductive.

I’ve honestly used this move on someone a few months back. with the ‘can I help you’ and the ‘you look lost’ and everything. Couldn’t be as smooth as Richie but did the trick.

I got to admit that when I first watched this scene, I wasn't convinced that Patrick and Richie were right for each other. But as the story developed, Richie won me over. He's pure of heart, sincere, and kind. Richie is the full package. And watching Patrick's journey to discover and accept his feelings for Richie was one of the highlights of this show. We all need a Richie in our lives. Team Richie always!!
I did a rewatch of Looking yesterday and saw the final movie. Richie is SO perfect. This show was PERFECTION and so relatable. I got goosebumps.
It sucks that it was canceled .
My husband and I are rewatching the series for the 100th time. And this scene, the way it was shot, the dialog, the acting is really what draws you into the show. You just know that this relationship will have a huge impact in the story. A similar effect happens in episode 3 when Patrick meets Kevin, but for all the wrong reasons. My husband's favorite episode is episode 5 when Richie and Patrick go on that long date and you slowly see them fall in love with each other. So beautifully done. And then Episode 6 is Dom's birthday party when all the characters interact for the first time, and all the build up and tension from previous episodes goes on a collision course. I love Looking. Never get tired of watching it I always find new things in the acting, the characters, the story, the themes it explores. Brilliant show!!

Why do I love these two so much. I keep coming back to them, can’t get enough. The best: the way Ritchie tilts his baseball cap at an angle and looks at Patrick. It just melts me. Everyone wants that guy.
Raul Castillo....his "Richie" knows EXACTLY how to pull you in. And you can tell he's been watching 'the acting greats' like Pacino, Washington and DeNiro. Because those guys, didnt just pull you in with what they had to say to another character...with the truly great actors, "THE HOW" in how they portray a character is the thing that grabs you. The way that Richie adjusts his cap...the way he looks at Patrick while he's shaking his hand...and the way he takes command of the scene with his body language and "swag". Those things are going to make him a GREAT actor. Raul spoiled us...we just didnt know it until the show was over and done.

Can I just say that I have never seen someone blush on queue like Groff does in this scene. Either Jonathan Groff is THAT good of an actor or Raul Castillo played Richie so well that he actually got Groff to blush for real. Either way, I love it!! You can literally see the sparks on screen.
Love that scene. So sexy. Patrick being all cute and shy. Love the way that Richie looks at him, like he wants to spend time with him or wanted him right here and now. Richie with puppy eyes when they shake their hands to say goodbye. Always gets me. A little play. I fell in love with Richie with that scene. What's not to love?

I can't count how many times I've watched this scene ..it is just the cutest/sweetest thing ever ..and I know most people who watched the show either had a crush on richie or kevin ..but I was/am still completely in love with patrick "jonathan groff"

Jonathan Groff is perfect as Patrick because he has the perfect mix of being cute and adorable, with a healthy dose of awkwardness and vulnerability that allow us to see Patrick for who he is, with all his positive and negative traits. This is why Patrick works as a character. He is believable. We have all either been Patrick or know someone like Patrick. Even when Patrick makes some serious errors in judgment, Jonathan Groff's talent and charisma still allow you to root for Patrick and find him relatable.
I just loved how serious Ritchi turns out to be about him and Patrick. He wasn’t just a random guy on a train looking for hook up. From Ritchi’s perspective I can say he saw Patrick and it was love at first sight for him, and he knew, it’s now or never, so he just said what’s on his heart to Patrick. But I don’t think Patrick treated him well.
Richie is the dream.
I confess I've always been team Kevin, not because I didn't like Richie but...I blame it to British accent. But watching it again, I just adore Richie! And Patrick here was so cute
My favorite: he moves because "couldn't hear you", then answers the question. Very sexy and smooth
This was one of the best character introductions in a series it told you all you need to know about Ritchie. he's sweet, kind considerate, and a bit of a charmer. He may not be highly educated, but he's very wise "youve been hanging out with yhe wring people, sweetie!"

One my fav scenes, Patrick is like who's this guy? Then he sees how cute he is and bingo!
I don’t know where to start with the entire show/movie. I’ve probably watched it from beginning to end over 100 times and still won’t ever forgive HBO for cutting it short. But the thing about this clip I love so much is how it sets up the future with Richie’s first words to Patrick “are you lost?”. The way Jonathan Groff manages to actually blush. There’s so much truth in this entire show it’s hard to know where to begin. Up there among the best tv ever made.
The line "Are you lost? is loaded with subtext. As viewers, we don't know this when we first watch the show. But on repeat views, that line carries so much meaning because Patrick is emotionally lost for most of the show as he tries to navigate between what he wants (Richie) and what he thinks others want for him (Kevin).
Speaking of Kevin, there's a scene in Episode 4 that is also loaded with subtext. Kevin tells Patrick that they should grab something to eat after they've been working all day on a weekend. Kevin suggests "fried chicken" or "anything fried" because Jon doesn't let him have it. Patrick reluctantly declines and Kevin looks disappointed. On repeat views, you realize that the conversation has nothing to do with fried chicken. It's all code for sex, and it foreshadows their troubled romance in future episodes.

This reminds me of myself a few years back. I had just recently figured out I was bi (I'm a girl) and I was eye flirting with everybody. So I'm on the bus to a party and I look at this girl and smile at her and at first I think she doesn't get it so I look away again and then I see her looking at me out the corner of my eye. And that alone made me happy. Then she gets up to leave and I think that's it, but she turns around and says "you are so fucking beautiful", all I can manage is a high pitched "thank you" before she leaves. I wish I had said "you, too" instead.

I remember watching this show in 2014, I was so depressed and so deep in the closet. However Looking gave me that little spark of hope that things could be better and that I'd be free and happy someday

It was Classism. The scene with Augustine telling Patrick he was "slumming". While there is a gay community, that doesn't stop us being parts of other groups. Auggie & Ritchie are both Latino, a connection Ritchie attempts to highlight at their first meeting, but Augustine wanted to make a distinction; we are NOT the same. When Patrick is introduced to Kevin's boyfriend, he tries to upsell Ritchie's profession, unintentionally denigrating him.
Ultimately, I don't think there was a right or wrong choice for who Patrick ended with, but I do think it may reveal some things about what that person places value on.
@@dandeleon2764 As a Latino I loved that the show made a distinction between Agustín and Richie from the get-go. Yes they are both Latinos, but their backgrounds are so different that it almost overpowers their commonalities. I don't know if it was meant to be a commentary on Latin American dynamics but it certainly can work as one. As Latinos we often divide ourselves based on our nationality, our religion, our immigration status in the US, instead of focusing on the things that unite us culturally and linguistically. The fact that Agustín and Richie are able to overcome their initial dislike is one of my favorite dynamics on the show.
And yes, there is definitely classism and some internalized xenophobia at play. Richie tries to speak Spanish to Agustín and he immediately rebuffs him, and responds to him in English. I can definitely relate to that experience with other Latinos who view speaking Spanish as a weakness or something to be embarrassed about, instead of viewing it as a strength and something to be proud about.

In the series I wanted Patrick to value Richie for being such a good person and I think the ending was good (although sad), because despite being in love with Kevin they ended up separated from what we already know. In the movie I realized that Kevin continued to love Patrick, as did Richie, but I didn't like the way he pushed Brady aside in just 5 minutes... only Patrick came along and now he realized he should be with Richie, but I didn't see him very much in love, but that's my perception. I think she used Richie because she realized she needed a relationship after Kevin. Anyway...

Please excuse my ignorance, I have wondered if say a gay man sees or meets a nice guy that he is attracted to and its a situation where he may not run into him again so he can learn more (like is he gay, for one thing) does he usually do what Richie did here and flirt a bit & see what happens, or does he ask the guy if he's Gay and unattached. And then try to follow up. I imagine it's difficult if it's a brief meeting. Much easier if they get introduced by a mutual friend. But like this, it's just not always possible.
Since the series takes place in San Francisco, I think it's pretty safe to assume that a man could be gay or at least bi, especially if you have a healthy sense of gaydar to help you navigate. Notice that Patrick does something similar when he meets Kevin in episode 3. But Richie also approached the situation in a relatively non-threatening manner. He was testing the waters by asking "Are you lost?". But again it's San Francisco. Even if Patrick was straight, the chances of Richie getting gay bashed are relatively small compared to rural places in the deep south.

PRINSPRAY Queer as Folk was, is and will forever remain the show whereas every other "gay" oriented show will be judged upon! The original one, the insanely hot one, and no gay fictional couple will ever get remotely close to Brian and Justin! They were the first credible ones and they shall never be equalled! Though I do not mind if others keep trying! But I do not hold much hope!

Queer As Folk was groundbreaking and it always be used as the measuring stick for other gay dramas to come. That being said, Looking was infinitely better than Queer As Folk. Queer As Folk was essentially a gay soap opera. Looking always had a more natural and realistic portrayal of gay life. With the exception of maybe Justin or Michael, I didn't know anyone in real life like the characters of QAF. But every character in Looking reminds me of someone. Its not necessarily that I know people exactly like the characters, its just the characters seem real. Looking is also much more diverse than QAF. Looking had 2 main characters who are Latino, and they are totally different from each other. It displayed that Latinos themselves are diverse, and not monolithic. Richie is Mexican from a working class family, while Agustin is Cuban from an affluent family in Miami. It would have been easy for the writers to use a Latino character for the immigrant storyline. But they turn this trope on its head. Both Latinos are American, and the immigrant is a handsome white guy from the UK. QAF was extremely successful and iconic, but Looking has its own merits. Unfortunately, it did not receive the same level of support in terms of viewers. But it has become a cult classic regardless.

The brilliance of this show is that it caught such a quick moment in time. Just look at the first shot of this scene you see a foggy night in san Francisco in 2015 when the city was healthy and humming a long, Just the Jean a se qua of it glowing blue in the fog in the evening with all the cars going around on the highways is so iconic. Because it was right after this show that trump was elected and that began a major change in time. Also at the time abrupt climate change was going exponential so nowadays there is no fog or clouds. We went through red san francisco and also I've seen apocolypic san francisco. but this show caught the castro at it's absolute peak right after the legalization of gay marriage right before the decline hit. Technically the show sucks; it's really boring just watching two average gay guys go on dates. Queer as folk knew they had to sensationalize and dramatize everything, the problem with looking is it's too realistic but that's also what makes it great was that it really caught San Francisco during a amazing time in history. Just the shots of the city are amazing.
Patrick is too much into satisfaying the others, he prefers a guy with power (status, money, nationality).
Meanwhile he is just messing around and breaking hearts.
This show explain perfectly how we gay people are so superficial and emotionally analphabets.

This scene is so strange I literally thought the first time I saw it that Richie was gonna attack Patrick... or like stalk him or something. Also not trying to be mean, but Johnathon groff really isn't attractive enough for this to actually be realistic. I think the character is probably written to be a bit hotter than the actual actor.
