I’m pretty influenced by the narrative approach but I also thought I wanted to be a school psychologist. However I realized being a school psych would be completely against my goals as a provider. So when you mentioned that MFT is way less about “fixing” people you saved me from being stuck and thinking there’s no careers for me ty 😭😭😭

I’m in grad school now. Talk to my friend yesterday and he said “Kim a license is a license!” Get the license 😂. Honestly LPC and LMFT can counsel married, families, and individuals. The only thing I may have done differently was went straight through but I’m only saying that now. Lol. My mindset probably wasn’t ready then.

I agree accreditation (e.g. CACREP) is important, but has exponentially driven up the cost of master programs with no evidence in improving client outcomes. It very much feels like a scam and in my opinion has reduced the quality of graduate level education. Nevertheless, I think MFT programs are the best option for persons wanting to work with children and families.

Danielle Jaen Well, LMHC (or LPC depending on the state), LMFT, LCSW are all licenses. Counseling psych, or just psychology, counseling, marriage & family therapy, social work are the masters degree. Does that make sense? So you get your degree first, and then go for your license. Someone with a masters in counseling psych would either go on to get a PhD or psyd and become a psychologist or they would stop at their masters and get licensed as an LMHC/LPC. (You don’t have licensed, but I struggling recommend it.) You’ll learn diagnosing either way, but won’t necessarily have to do it depending on your job. But it definitely sounds like you lean more towards mental health counselor vs psychologist. Hope that helps.

I think an LMFT/LMHC dual program might be right for me. There are quite a lot that I've found here in California. But if I go to a school that only has an LMHC program (Boston University), can I sit in the LMFT exam?
Danielle Jaen that’s a great question. You’ll have to look at your state. I know in FL someone with an LMHC can get an LMFT after 2 years, I think that’s the amount of time, and they just have to pass the exam. My masters is in counseling with a dual specialization in both. So I just did hours for both at my internship and that was enough. You’ll likely need specific coursework, internship hours, post grad hours, and to pass the licensure exam for each license.

For me, yes. Not only am I knowledgeable in two different areas, I also have twice the job options. But that does kind of depend on what sector of work you’re trying to do. I’ve seen jobs that require a LMFT and they won’t take an LMHC/LCPC.

@@janifotitorrens4738 I don’t know why I’m just seeing this 🤦🏽♀️ LMFT are usually equipped with the same knowledge as a LMHC, so you’d be fine getting an LMFT and being able to do mental health and individual counseling as well.
A LCSW can do all of this and more. And they are the only masters level clinicians that can accept Medicare. I assume because social work is an older, internationally recognized profession for every sphere of health treatment, especially community based. Remember, the field of psychology is still relatively new, and some of these degrees are especially new and might not be viewed the same way across all positions even if they are accredited. Many of the pure counseling programs end up being a little myopic by hyperfocusing on abnormal psychology and on individual solutions which primarily treat the symptoms.
I agree with most of this…. Social work has been around for wayyyyyy longer and they learn a little bit of everything, which is why they can do so much (not everyone, like myself, wants to do that though...). They can take Medicare, but I don’t know many clinicians that want to deal with medicare…. Medicare was a pain to deal with when was I billing them when I was analyst. I have a few good friends and many colleagues with MSWs and LCSWs who don’t feel as though they have had as much clinical counseling preparation as a psych/counseling degree, but that likely depends on the program. I only disagree with the last sentence, as that wasn’t my experience. My program for counseling only had one ‘abnormal psych’ class, but I can only speak to my experience. Psych program focus a lot pathology. I simply answered the person’s question and they had no interest in doing social work. They were between these career paths. But maybe I’ll do a video on this because it comes up a lot. Luckily, there are so many options for us to all help. I took one social work class in undergrad and new it was for me… I dropped it within a week 🤣 If that had been the only option, I guess I’d have a PhD in psych 🤷🏽♀️

I’m researching this for myself and finding that MSW carries a bit of a chip on its shoulder 😂 I tease but I’m also serious. I think it’s great to have an expansive and highly contextualized view of mental health but some of us are suited better in other programs. After speaking to many programs, I’m finding that that’s me. So yeah - maybe folks should tone down the MSW supremacy 😂
I find it interesting that some programs don't outright mention 'Human Sexuality' in their titles...when sex is a huge part of life. I know these issues are being taught...but why be so conservative with the titles...? Because of external entities who might want to donate scholarships? I am finding that programs near larger cities...religious institution or not...actually list 'Human Sexuality'. Like...'keeping it real'. Sex is a small portion of a relationship but without it the relationship is over... just like abortion is only 3 percent of Planned Parenthood but pulls in the most revenue (just an analogy but true nonetheless). What are your thoughts??? It really bothers me...if a program can't just say the word sex in their course descriptions....it says alot about the culture of the program. I am a conservative Christian that likes to keep it real. I'm not the type to say...distract yourself with other activities to weene yourself from sex addiction lol 🤣 I want to get to the root of insecurities.
45 with lots of debt and also considering this, Always been a passion. My two big concerns, however, are salary, and the fact that it’s independent work with no coworkers to build camaraderie with.
