I'd go so far as to say that Color Out of Space is the BEST film adaptation of Lovecraft, hands down. Yes, Really.

This is THE movie for anybody who is a fan of alpacas.
Alpacas feature in many scenes, the alpacas are integral to the plot, and it's good to see alpacas finally getting recognition for their art.

Magenta is indeed extra-spectral (we perceive it as a result of red and blue overlapping, SO TO SPEAK), and in a movie watched by humans (your main audience), one could not do better than that.

It's a shame this film didn't get a wide release. I saw this in my local art house cinema and LOVED IT. It was a mix of beautiful and disturbing that felt like watching another film Annihalation for the first time but with all the elements of that film cranked up from 5 to 11. Amazing to see your film, and interesting to hear the history of this beautiful film. Hopefully the director will find his niche with this film

My wife and I watched this back in April, at home, and when the credits rolled....were in such gobsmacked awe at what we just witnessed. This is easily the best film I've seen the past year and the best (cosmic) horror film in ages. I couldn't find words to describe what we watched, and we were so delighted at it. It was a movie experience that delivered exactly what I wanted and more. It has the best cinematography I've seen in a contemporary film. The music is atmospheric, as is should. The sense of dread felt by all in the film, how the time-space anamoly explains everyone's disorientation, and why it seems like events are a little out of sequence. And in true cosmic horror fashion: no one wins, no happy ending, and an ominous open ending. Just brilliant!

Agreed - The Reanimator is untouchable. No one is going to out-Herbert West Jeffrey Combs.
This was a really good adaption, and didn't make the mistake of trying to explain too much. I want REALLY want Stanley to finish his trinity.

I think Nick Cage's behaviours in this movie work perfectly for the story because the Colour is literally driving him mad but gradually

  • @lugialover09
    @lugialover09 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

As a Lovecraft aficionado with The Colour out of Spae being my absolute favorite story of his, I personally really enjoyed the movie. It was kinda....eh at times. I think the transformation bullshit with the mother and the alpacas was a bit unnecessary, but I think they did a pretty damn fine job of adapting it. Some people might think that Nic Cage is just doing his usual weird crazy acting again (and he is), but it genuinely suits the story. The entire point is that the family just totally falls apart. Granted, they went a bit hardcore with it. In the original, there was more of a very gradual wasting away rather than sudden changes to the point that it's only near the end of the story when the character telling the story to the narrator looks out at the farm and sees how utterly degraded and twisted the area is. It's called the "blasted heath" for a reason.

Anyone else notice the "No Flesh Shall Be Spared" quote on the wall? That's a reference to Mark 13, otherwise known as Stanley's other misunderstood masterpiece Hardware! I got that immediately! I'll bet there's reference to another Richard Stanley film, Dust Devil too!

@@pete_lind Mark 13:20 is also a Bible passage, containing the text "no flesh shall be saved" which was adapted to "no flesh shall be spared" , that's why the droid was also called MARK 13, look it up, in foreign territories, I believe the movie was also marketed as MARK 13. One scene I really liked was this one really brief bit at about the mid-point of the film where first we see Jack sitting in his usual spot in the front yard staring at the well, when suddenly Sam comes trotting in and sits down next to him and Jack greets him with a little head pat. After a few moments, Sam turns his head to Jack and casually sniffs him, as if to check up on him and make sure he's alright. Apparently satisfied but still kinda weary, Sam returns to looking at the well with Jack just as the Color starts to emanate from it and brighten. Sam gets freaked out by this and takes an aggro-defensive posture to protect Jack, setting his ears back and bearing his teeth and growling and all that usual dog stuff. Then he goes on the attack, barking as he runs into the light until he disappears into it. Jack, all the while, remains motionless. It's the last we see of good ol' Sam the dog in the movie.
I dunno what it is about that scene that I like so much, as I can't really pinpoint why exactly I like it. It definitely highlights how well-trained the dog playing Sam really is, though! I dunno how you teach a dog something so specific as sniffing someone's head for few seconds while remaining seated next to them, followed by acting aggro-defensive, growling and bearing their teeth with their ears back, but all without actually BEING aggro-defensive and having those signals MEAN anything. I mean, can dogs, even arguably very smart breeds like the dog playing Sam, actually understand the concept of "acting"? FEIGNING behavior like that and intentionally displaying it without actually FEELING the way those signals would normally indicate? I'd think that'd be rather high-concept abstract thinking for a dog, no matter how smart... that requires some level of abstraction ability.
But hey, maybe there's some kind of specific, specialized technique for getting dogs to behave like that that I just don't understand yet. Or hell, maybe I'm just plain WRONG about my assumptions regarding the cognitive abilities of dogs, and they in fact DO have some level of understanding that what they're doing is "just pretend". Shit, I HOPE that's the case, 'cuz how cool would THAT be, right?? :D

Great job guys on coming up on 25k subscribers. The real shame is that Guillermo Del Toro never got to make his At the Mountains of Madness film. I have all the Lovecraft stories in beautiful Arkham hardcover books. Remaking Re-Animator would be a huge mistake. Even though Lovecraft's stuff is nearly 100 years old a lot of his stuff still feels fairly modern. Thanks to Steven King(and he did one of the best versions of the Color out of Space in Creepshow ) using Lovecraft elements as well as great board games like Arkham Horror and the Living Card Game. In a very real way Lovecraft is even more popular now. The amount of stuff that has been inspired by Lovecraft is insane. Even films like Annihilation have elements in common with this film.

Good movie but my biggest critique is that the actors feel like actors reciting lines. They feel like people that have known each other a week and not like people that have lived together for decades as a family.
That and the college grad student hitting on the 16 year old high school student daughter. That was just weird.

there's a black and white microbudget film from 2011, it's worth tracking down, it feels fairly diagetic to the story which is told as a period piece and is very directly the story. I did not know anything about the director or the history of this film, but when I did get a chance to see it I was blown away, it takes more liberties but expresses all the same feelings and ideas while being a lot more fun/exploitative/horror . masterclass stuff. also look in the story the colour comes infests the wildlife and land scientists come check it out, it doesn't kill you it keeps you and it leaves. The ending is the same, the yogsothoth stuff is interesting and if it goes anywhere in the future, nice, but until then it doesn't matter the alien visitor continued it's journey. this was a roadside picnic.

For me this is a simple one. If you're really into Lovecraft you'll like this, and if not, you probably won't. I'm really into Lovecraft, and I fucking loved it!
By the way, there was an adaptation of this story in the 60's starting Boris Karloff called "Die Monster Die", and it's actually not bad.

I was worried that Cage would get too out of control but his "freak out" moments didn't take away from the experience of watching this movie. As a fan of H.P Lovecraft and this story being one my favorites I was not disappointed. The cgi cat is a nitpick at best but it could easily have been skipped. The music though is truly mesmerizing and the visuals as well. I'm going to support the hell out of this movie as I really, really need more movies like this!

I agree with you guys about this film being really good. The only ting I didn't like was the girl being named Lavinia. It's such an unusual name that it sticks out like a sore thumb in the movie, since it takes place in modern times and the rest of the family has more common names. And as a Lovecraft fan it was distracting because she is nothing like the crazy, timid, weird looking albino Lavinia Whately from The Dunwich Horror.

  • @XperimentorEES
    @XperimentorEES 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Sadly this film was strangled on release by only getting shown in a few theaters, so despite seeing trailers everywhere only a handful of states even aired it; and hollywood is continuing to postpone movies killing off interest in returning to movie theaters, as if streaming wasn't doing enough damage already, but that's a criticism ramble for another time. Anyway glad to see some classical storytelling revival because so much of recent media has been recycled.
I more or less agree with your review; Cage is one of the best for playing characters going over the edge, choice of color and cgi usage for portraying otherworldly entities is excellent, just enough filler to keep the slow burn going with the side actors, and the alternating perspective to keep us guessing what's going on. Few things bugged me enough to not give it straight As, and I'll explain; Lavinia's pagan obsession was distracting from the main story, some of the audio was too screechy to be enjoyably atmospheric, and I would've swapped out a couple deleted scenes.
Lovecraft's stories by and large can be categorized either as: cult related (such as Call of Cthulhu & the Dunwich Horror), or monstrous interaction (such as From Beyond & Pickman’s Model). And I'd say Color out of Space squarely falls into the later category; her 'wicken' ways were unnecessary as simply being a rebellious goth would've gotten her disinterested frustration across just as well, the color was frighteningly mysterious enough without trying to say there were other influences at play, Ward could've seen the alien landscape through the portal in the sky, and the just showing the necronomicon in her book collection would've been a nice easteregg for fans akin to the compass instead of rubbing it in our faces with self mutilation.
Not sure if it's the music or the blending of the tracks, but there's several obnoxious squeaking and screeching through the film; and yes I've tried it on several disks and different dvd players and even in a couple streaming services. Like the Void's strobe lighting it's just a painful part of the movie, it's too much to consider rewatching with any frequency.
As for the deleted scenes, they're all worth watching though they're not put in chronological order, there's two I would've left in; Benny's dream telling to the alpacas would've added onto the theories of what's happening, and Nathan's handstand would've been brief but needed levity while showing he's going off kilter. The two scenes I would've cut would be; Jack's whistling to the well since it goes on so long without going anywhere, and milking the alpacas.
Amused by the tree snatching the sheriff as an homage to the line about the trees swaying without wind, seriously read the story if you can there's some wonderfully weird descriptions. One other thing come to mind off about this movie though, why did they leave out the mention that some of the 'color' stayed behind in the blasted heath? That was part of the creeping dread to remembering the strange days . . .
If you want more existential horror movies, I'd recommend; Virus (1999), The Forgotten (2004), Triangle (2009), Coherence (2013), Time Lapse (2014), Moose (2015), The Endless (2017), Annihilation (2018), & Fantasy Island (2020).

Altho like Bruce Willis, Nic Cage seems to have to say yes to nearly everything, he at least chooses some really fucking interesting projects and gives it his all. This, and Mandy, really made me smile so much. Such bonkers amazingness :) In The Earth less so, but I loved that for similar reasons. Not nearly as wacky tho, obviously :)

Love this film too! I think in this age with modern special effects, quality Lovecraft adaptations are more achievable. I would like to see some of those stories adapted into a modern film but set in their original time. Even though Reanimator is an untouchable classic, I'd kinda like to see a period remake of that.

It’s not that century old storytelling hasn’t been surpassed, it’s that nothing new has entered the public domain in the past hundred years. Storytelling relies much more on the familiar than the novel. Once we removed our collective ability to tell and retell stories, letting them grow and adapt, fiction started stagnating.

The Problem with CGI is that they somehow never get the motions of the animated object right. I think the surfaces of the creatures look ok. But the motions look wrong. They should observe how real insects and animals really move, and then model the cgi objects accordingly. Or record the motions of real insects and animals and translate it on CGI models. This sickness is everywhere nowadays. The motions of CGI look so wrong ubiquitously. I call it CGI motion sickness. Get the motions right finally! Please! Or it will always look like digital rubber. Even in Star Wars this is a Problem now. The people who animate stuff never observe how real objects move!

@Gasper Vidovic Yep, finished it yesterday. Didn't regret watching it. Maybe the last 15 minutes of the movie were a bit challenging in terms of light and sound. Nicolas Cage was great and the references to H. P. Lovecraft's writing were excellent.

This movie was a real pleasant (horrifying) surprise!
So good to see old H.P.L. finally get some quality adaptations, after years of mostly cheapo, shonky af ones! \😸/

Yeah, Gary and Iain do have a good chemistry, but Jess offers far better insight that Iain usually does. I'd like to see all three of them together tbh

I thought it kept to the proper plot, but modernized it well without being intrusive. Also, I wouldn't B averse to Angela Bettis staring as Roberta "Bert" West in a remake of Reanimator made by Lovecraft fans who understand the material.

I only seen this movie for the Cage n I got my Cage's worth. I thought the movie was okay but dragged in some locations n some characters felt tacked on. At least two characters were there just to give exposition and raise the body count, and the older brother felt like they didnt even want him in the film.

I did not like this adaptation of The Colour Out of Space. It didn't have the same feel as the original story with too many of the elements altered and it tries to set up the next ten films rather than focus on making this one good. My favorite part of the original story was when the crazy old exposition guy (a staple of Lovecraftian fiction) reveals that a small part of the Colour Out of Space actually failed to escape and fell back down into the well. Here, we just get sequel bait.
