It's just nice to finally see a movie that isn't teal and orange. I *hate* the colour grading we've been forcibly subjected to over the last 13 years. Feels like being able to breathe again.

It doesn't give off a terrible smell. A key to that in the film was that ONLY Nic Cage's character could smell it. They were all affected differently. The little son heard it calling him , the Father smelled it, and the daughter felt it. Things I only noticed on a second viewing.

@theone Andonly I don't think it's fair to either film to weigh them against each other when they are both their own animals (One's an LSD Tiger & the other an Alpaca Hydra). When I first watched Colour I realized I liked Cage more in Mandy, but then I realized I was underselling the intention of his character here being completely distinct in motivation/ attitude. They're both really good movies. Have you seen Beyond the Black Rainbow btw? That was Mandy's directors first film, Mandy his second. I saw someone say if it weren't for Super 8 & Beyond the Black Rainbow, Stranger Things wouldn't exist. That director, Cosmos or whatever his name is, has an awesome *twisted Psychedelia* aesthetic & themes going on. The Trip sequence in Black Rainbow is a pretty good visual metaphor for Ego Death. & both Mandy & Black Rainbow are set in 1983. I wanna see more of Panos Cosmatos's cinematic universe of Psychedelic Nihilism set in 1983

Great review! I hope Spectrevision keeps it up, as Mandy is outstanding. Daniel isn't real is quite good too. I found Color out of space daring but tonally it kept me guessing. Some of the effects are great and that magenta is haunting in many scenes/mutations.

  • @Transmission_Rory
    @Transmission_Rory 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I think the movie is okay. I would have loved this if it came out 10 years ago. I think the problem (and this isn’t the movies fault) is that it’s adapting a book who’s narrative and visual style we’ve seen in other films (The Thing, Annihilation).
That being said, I found it to be a more effective horror movie than something like Midsommar. Comparing it to that film, it doesn’t feel like Richard is trying to emphasise his style. He’s focused on capturing the look of a Lovecraft story and manages to make the disturbing content horrifying.

@@fredfredburger5150 The original written story is essentially a conceptual template the movie used to build its own narrative upon. This movie is similar to From Beyond in this respect, as the movie "adaptations" add their own characters & plots, using Lovecraft's concepts as a springboard to bring their own unique cinematic interpretation to life

Curiously, I did notice that the movie must have been filmed in Europe, before I read that it was a Portuguese production. It had to do with inappropriately misplaced wildlife. I only happened to notice because amphibians are one my life's great passions. There is one shot in which we see a Fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) hanging out near the lip of a well. These guys are only found in continental Europe. Another shot shows a Common toad (Bufo bufo) in the garden. Again, a European animal. I suppose these two could have been replaced with a Spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) and an American toad (Anaxyrus americanus), respectively, as both are found in New England.

I think I watched a German version of this story, but it was filmed in black and white (which gave you a free pass as to "see" the color yourself in your mind's eye.) I forget where I saw it (streaming service IIRC) And the German story is told backwards, sort of. I recommend it as a good adaptation...because it doesn't "show" the horror... it's just out of the scene... which lets your mind run rampant. :) (2010 by Huan Vu. Thanks IMDB!)

Weirdly enough, Colour Out of Space is one of my least favourite of Lovecraft's works. I think either the Shadow over Insmouth, In the Mountains of Madness, The Shadow Out of Time, or The Call of Cthulhu compete for my favourite of his works.
I had low expectations when I had heard that this was in the works, and if I'm being honest, I passed up on buying a copy. I just don't think Lovecraft translates well to the silver screen. I think the closest we can ever get is At the Mouth of Madness.

I would add Haunter in the Dark to that list of yours, but yeah, I agree with you. Lovecrafts stories are almost as much thriller and drama as horror in the way he writes them and very hard to adapt to screen.

Being a long-time Lovecraft fan, adaptations to film have always been dicey.
But Richard Stanley did do the source material justice.
I do agree that the pacing felt slightly sluggish at times, but the cast did well and the movie's climax in fusing music & light was delightfully trippy.
I hope that once this Covid nonsense is behind us, Mr. Stanley can resume his Lovecraft trilogy. Rumor has it that "The Dunwich Horror" is to be the 2nd film and the 3rd is TBD.

Notice, Lavinias minimalistic triangled barrette in opening "ritual" sequence - i think, a little reference to the majestic body-horror The Void, another heavy HPL themed movie. This little detail centered on frame for too long to be a coincidence.
Overall, Its ok movie, always glad to see HPL material on screen, some parts are dragging it down (minor acting flaws, some scenes are little long), most parts are very enjoyable (picture, sound and practical effects, overall feel), definitely not a "guilty pleasure".

Well, magenta does exist as visible to us, so it isn't really that "never before seen color out of space". But good try. It's maybe so 1980s because everything in the 1980s was magenta and aqua, the two main colors used here. I found the HP Lovecraft short story pretty scary as a kid, never found a good film adaptation of it, even this one which is still better than any others. The thing about Lovecraft is that his most popular stories, like this one, are unique enough to be interesting, while his other lesser works are too repetitive, and become tedious with too much Cthulu Mythos being used. Lovecraft was a very good writer, but not great.

The lovecraft plot summary sounds like Annihilation without the all-women hack plot point

Annihilation is based on the book with female characters in it.

Lovecraft wasn't racist. He was xenophobic, which was deeply rooted in his mental illness. It is interesting how quick people judge Lovecraft by today's standards without taking in consideration that Lovecraft changed lots of his views in later years. I also think that this movie is an abomination, a mockary and completely missing the core of the short-story.

The acting in this is off. It's like uneasy. I'm not saying it's bad it's just weird. I'm guessing it's on purpose.

I always turn off when a film maker says things like 'I love this persons work, but ...'. If you like a book then adapt the book, don't say well I like a few things FROM the book and so will use them then the rest is my own interpretation. I have read Lovecraft since I was around 10 or so and am now 50 so have a pretty good feel for his work. I haven't seen this movie though I was intrigued when I heard it was being done, now I have seen this vid though I think I'll give it a miss. They have gone way off topic from the story it seems keeping only the basic outline in place then going for a standard horror mash up which, if you read the story itself, is not what this should be about. There is no grotesque body melding and mutation in the story from what I remember, it's simply the life gets drawn out of the animals, plants and humans and they turn to dust. But I guess that wouldn't give any boring jump scares would it, lol.

have you even seen it? I just watched it and id hesitate to say there is maybe one jump scare. Say what you will but this adaption captured the ethos of the story better than you can ask for even if it wasnt adapted down to the letter

@@yellowfamilyfunny3065 As I said I haven't seen it and from what was shown here have no desire to. It looks like an overblown CGI visual explosion with current day horror elements. That is not what the original story was. It was a slow burn dramatic horror which slowly has the land and the family dying as the days and weeks go on told from the perspective of an outsider in the area there to survey the area for a new dam. He finds out about why a particular piece of land is shunned by the locals and gets told the story of what happened to the Gardner family, how at the end the Colour blasted into space all but a small piece that fell back into the well. Once the damn is built and the area is underwater the surveyor wonders and fears what might contaminate that water source. It's a very good story if you have a good imagination and don't mind a slow journey into the horror which only really hit at the very end.
