It's your last couple of days off. It was a cool stormy night the night before. You wake up, you thought it was a clap of thunder. Instead it's a clear blue sky, you look up until you are struck with unfathomable horror as you sight the top of one of the towers burning like an enormous smoke stack. Sirens all around, every fire engine and ambulance in the city rushing to the scene. Helicopters start surrounding the tower. People above hanging out of windows, some leaping out rather than being immolated. Then something catches your eye, not another helicopter but a plane rushing in from the south. Perhaps it's a water tanker like for a forest fire, yeah, they'll spray the side of the building and try to douse the fire. And you never could have imagined it, no human being with the tiniest ounce of love in his heart could have imagined it. It strikes the neighboring tower. You feel a sadness you'll never be able to put into words for those poor people inside those buildings. Then you feel a seething anger you've never felt before of since, something you can never put it into words. Yet you saw it, everybody saw it. That plane crashed into that second tower deliberately. You curse, perhaps instinctively as you watch that building reverberate and sway back and forth.
You watch countless people down on the ground flee from the site, the deafening echo of sirens as though they're playing a symphony from Hell. You try to turn away but you can't look away. You now think about the building you're in, is there going to be a second plane, a third plane? As you watch the flames lick the steel facades of each tower, and debris fall until you force yourself to turn away when another innocent soul jumps. And now, as if the day couldn't get anymore Hellish you see a row of debris fall in unison as the top of the superstructure keels over and collapses along with the entire building below. How many thousands or tens of thousands of people just died in these few short seconds? You shut the window, ash and dust engulf the streets and the city. You can't say anything, there's nothing appropriate to say. You look at the now lone tower still burning, transfixed, ultimately depressed anticipating what's about to transpire. With a vain hope and plea to God that it just does not happen. But at the next shaking breath you draw, it does, the second tower crumbles. Jagged steel exposes itself and lodges itself into the surrounding streets and buildings. Again ash and dust and soot engulf the city with the stench of death. And you're left terrified as you observe the appropriate silence thereafter.
You know that the world you knew yesterday was just annihilated in a few short minutes with this most heinous act. You will always remember the morning of Tuesday, September 11th. Your life, the lives of everyone else and the world itself will never be the same again. Unbelievable, inconceivable. Ultimately unforgivable.
