    As someone who actually plays with a therapist, it’s honestly a lot more of them trying to fully understand the motivation of every single NPC rather than the PCs themselves.

    For anyone that is interested, there are group counseling sessions using DnD as the medium. So the therapist would be the DM, they run through the session and do some processing after the DnD session. I just happened to be interested in it as an I am a new Therapist.

    There are many different types of game groups. "No judgement" sounds great in theory, but can be odd in practice. When characters who are supposed to be good have players who are extremely pragmatic, then being a bit judgmental might not be out of place.
    "But... saturation bombing would kill the civilians along with the hostiles."
    "Why are you judging me, I thought this was a safe space."
    Then again, judging the character's actions is different from judging the player. Some of the nicest people I know play some of the most violent characters. Now, if a bunch of characters in a row have immense collateral damage, after a while, the rest of the table will wonder why that's such a consistent theme.

    • @RoseLord
      @RoseLord ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I 100% agree mortal questions in game seem to leak in to real life
      And it’s up to the table if they want to talk about destruction behavior to the fantasy world in or out of game

    • @paulgerg6879
      @paulgerg6879 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Judging a character's actions assumes you know the character that person is playing. A lawful good character may be a Changeling who wants all humans dead, for all you know! I played a game where the GM had allowed us to think the character was a ranger because he knew the guy was a changeling thief, with a Chaotic alignment, he basically didn't give a shit about anyone but Changelings.
      I play a Moon Druid and am playing him very bestial, very anti-civilisation. My backstory includes watching local forests being torn down to make a town, killing all the local wildlife, so I am not very human or Civ-friendly. My GM has my backstory and told me recently that I was playing my character against type because he assumed I was going to be a fluffy Druid who makes calming teas for everyone - he clearly hadn't read my backstory at all, even though he was the person who asked for it.
      Also played with a Wizard who turned out to be working with the bad guys. Some of his decisions seemed really weird but when we finally worked it out, it totally made sense.

  • @RoseLord
    @RoseLord ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I think a therapist at the table could make really interesting characters and develop or even a therapist player character could be fun as long as keep those assumptions and psychoanalysis in game 😆

    See, I don't think the therapist is totally off base. Like yeah, obviously it's not that severe but I've always said you can tell a lot about somebody by the characters they play. Even when it's "I played a fighter last time and wanted to mix things up" how and what they pick says a lot about them. Though, granted it's often things like "I like trickster characters" or "I want to feel powerful in my life".
    Plus I've seen several nascent LGBTQIA+ people use dnd to explore aspects of their identities they weren't quite ready to irl

    Honestly this is kinda genius and could really help the players, but not really them more their characters, if you really wanna try out a new class then he could give you a whole backstory idea and a concept of how to play, especially good if you like min maxing and don't enjoy the process of backstory as much

    A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who prescribes medications for psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, eating disorder, etc. There are regular adult psychiatrists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, consult and liaison psychiatrists (what Dr. House was initially meant to be based on), geriatric psychiatrists, addictions psychiatrists, and now interventional psychiatrists that provide care such as ketamine, ECT, rTMS, etc. It requires at least 4 years of residency after 4 years of medical school after at least 4 years of undergraduate and additional fellowship for subspecialty. The average salary is around 300k a year.
    A therapist can get licensed after 6 months of training...

    2:15 As a DM, this is a point where you should pauze the game, and speak with new player privately about some ground rules, if he wants to be there with you. It would be fine if he made character who is therapist and focuses on mental health of his fellow party members and NPCs (if this is something you want to have in your game). It is not ok, to judge their in game choices and make assumptions about them as players or try to pry into their private lives.
