    this video is just what I need as a struggling beginner unable to get or learn the correct service motion. I pray I will be able to come back here one day, hopefully soon in the future, and say I’ve made a breakthrough because of the fundamentals explained here so clearly and brilliantly!!

    Showing the desired movement of the racquet using the on screen drawing with the green circles and yellow arrows is simply an unbelievable way of teaching body movements.     This is exactly the biomechanical problem that i have. Racket behind head diagonally and unable to drop further. Habit of years doing it wrong. Partly due to shoulder mobility but worked with bands to make it more flexible. Your video comparison is excellent and very helpful to see the movements required to fix the racket path and elbow route. Keep up the good work coach. 😊

    Ok. My name is Roly Gardner and I serve like this guy. A weird turn of events. I happened to video myself serving before I saw this vid. I felt like I was serving well and was winning tournament matches. All good. Until I saw this guy and thought who this is how I serve. Long story short I started to adopt this routine and wow! More power more control more everything. I am a big advocate of online training but this is the bet correction ever. Thank you sooooo much it has changed my game. I am beating guys way ove my classement. Can't praise you enough man. Cheers!

    Wow!! I will most definitely try this today or tomorrow. At 13:50, I strongly believe that this is what I'm doing wrong: my elbow is not coming forward and it sometimes causes pain in my wrist. I will most definitely practice this drill with the elbow and ball.

    Hi Ryan, thanks for this great video. You point out the tip of the racquet should be pointing to the right side with the face closed. From another recent tip of yours I gather it's better for the tip to be pointing down with the wrist loose. Both scenarios I suppose are ok? Also could you pls. clarify where the racquet should be pointing during the trophy position? Different pros seem to have slight nuances in their trophy position - some have the racquet more vertical or strings facing the right side, some slighty tilted forward and strings facing down, etc. Is one technically better than the other or is this just a preference?

    Very clear explanation. What I see Lucas's. On dominant hand ends behind his back instead of the right arm pit or close to the right part of the chest.

    Nice job, Ryan. Right to left is a major. misconception. From Lucas's video it's towards the front of the court. From yours it's front to back (behind the head of the server). Well, everything is relative but this video is a big step forward..

    so can we say that the elbow leads and drives the forward motion of the serve? does shoulder rotation, like in a throwing motion, ever come into play or is it just elbow drive that's key?

      To an extent. The topspin serve uses less forward elbow movement.

    Love the videos. I gotta say - every time I watch these videos about serves, it seems that Pete Sampras violates 2 or 3 rules. Am I wrong?

      Pistol Pete doesn’t violate any serve rules. And he’s actually my favorite player of all time. People who struggle serving look on YT for ways to improve. And people who struggle serving don’t improve when trying to serve like Sampras. Think of it this way…a surgeon’s job is to fix broken arms and then put a cast on it to help it heal. That doesn’t mean that surgeons think EVERYONE should walk around with casts on their arms all the time or that if someone doesn’t have a cast on their arm that they a violating a rule. The cast is ONLY for people with broken arms. My instruction is for people who have broken serves. Sampras’ serve wasn’t broken, so no need to make his serve different.

    What is your opinion about the timing the elbow goes forward? I have learned that at first the elbow stays at his place when the racket is moving over the birthday head so there is a stretch (it gives a nice feeling) in your shoulder for maximum power.

      Yes, I thought the elbow remained in the same position until the point where it is knocking off the birthday hat, and then it comes forward and up.

    Elbow and racket switching positions. Do you create the switch by leading with the elbow coming forward or leading with the racket arm circling over the head (knocking off the party hat) causing the elbow to come forward?

    My racquet goes over my hand rather than in. In shadow swings without a ball i can correct it but not when a ball and impact serve are at play. Been trying for years, still not successful. Maybe very strong muscle memory in my right arm from playing cricket.

      Foot placement and ball toss. If you toos the ball too far out then you have to move your feet and reach for it messing up your body position for optimal serve

    I have been practicing this serve motion; BUT for some reason I start in a continental grip, BUT end up with a forehand grip. Killing me.

    In summary elbow forward and up. The rest can be more flexible.or les perfect. Remember that the next step is more important....how to.hit the ball to.send it to the opppnent square above the net....)

    If you have thrown stones or snowballs in your youth, this "racket drop" is an automatic move. You just get a lot more speed with this.

      @@2MinuteTennis it appears that holding the racquet towards the right side of the body with strings facing down and from that position moving the racquet in a circular motion aiming to knock the birthday hat … usually in the professional circuit players will be in that power position (interpretation of trophy IMO) before hitting the ball

    Good instruction but something very obvious was not addressed... His wrist is locked out at address and he needs to choke down on the handle so that some flash is hanging below the end of the racket which will allow the wrist to free up. It is evident that his wrist is locked the whole time through the swing which is not allowing any snap.

    Asking the server to pay attention to where the racquet tip should move confuses the learner. This way, the learner will often to use his/her arm to manipulate the racquet so that its tip will follow the correct path. Instead, we should ask the the learner to concentrate his/her big muscle, like the core, hips and shoulders, making sure he/she rotate back his/her body first to store energy and then rotate forward to hit the ball, with the arm and hand relaxed, then the tip of the racquet will automatically to follow the correct path, described in this video. In other words, the correct racquet tip path is the result of the correct body rotation and arm/hand relaxation, not our effort target.
