    Excellent video and excellent workmanship too. A couple of comments, things you might want to consider: the oil normally used in these compressors is a synthetic oil that has (I believe) characteristics that make it undesirable on the skin (nasty carcinogenic type thing) they also don't like moisture at even super low levels as it degrades them quickly (The reason for the "filter drier" bulb thing in fridges etc) and they are designed to be miscible in the refrigerant so that as the oil inevitably comes out the discharge tube with the gas the oil will travel the whole circuit with the refrigerant and end up back in the compressor. My answer to these issues was to remove the oil and measure how much comes out (use the suction or process tubes for this) then replace it with ordinary compressor oil in the same amount as was removed. The discharge I plumbed into a wide verftical section of tube such that the air flow at that point would slow down enough to drop any oil traveling with it. The air inlet to the wider tube is about half way up one side and angled so that in the wider tube it points downward. The air outlet is at the top and the oil outlet is at the bottom and connected via a hand operated valve to the suction line of the compressor. Sol oil recovery is a manual operation but not a big deal.
    One last thing, I hope you don't mind me saying all this, most of these compressors will not start if there is back pressure (or suction) at starting. To overcome this I put a valve on the suction to the appliance and use that and the oil recovery valve to start the compressor without losing the suction on the appliance.
    I hope that makes sense to anybody interested enough to read it all.

    You can run these as vacuum pumps for hours on end if you provide cooling by just aiming a fan on it (there's overheating protection that will shut off power otherwise). I've run one for 12 hours once doing a distillation. Fridge pumps have a slow flow rate but pull aspirator vacuum easily (50-60 mmHg), a good one will go down to 30" even.

    The thing is, HOW to de-gaz the compressor from the fridge first ? I mean, if you need a fridge compressor, the first thing you need to do, is to get a compressor from a fridge.
    Because the problem is that compressor is filled with a specific gaz that can be dangerous. You cannot just cut and remove. No ?

    Hello . Our Hotpoint Ariston refrigerator stalls after turning on after 5-7 seconds. A red square flashes on the front door displays. When starting without a start-up protective relay, the compressor works, but the refrigerator does not cool and the display on the front door of the refrigerator does not light. Please tell me what is the reason ?? Is there a starting relay ?? and even the compressor heats up a lot during such a start.

    • @samsworkshopdiary5748
      @samsworkshopdiary5748  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, unfortunately I can not say exactly why. The compressor may be sluggish and the starter relay has been damaged by too much current. If the compressor is running but the refrigerator is not cooling, the cooling circuit may also be leaking. It can also be a defective expansion valve, if it is clogged, the compressor has to pump more and gets warmer.

I laid the fridge with the 2 small copper tubes laying down. Please advice sir. Did I mess up bad? Any feedback would be great. Have a good one.

    I'm not sure how this can "stabilize" a knife handle, but it is a good way for a shade tree mechanic to make his own tools for working on a refrigeration or air conditioning system. you can add oil by a mister to the inlet of the pump, and also you can put the discharge of the pump into a vessel of water and watch for bubbles. when the bubbles stop with the compressor running, you have achieved the maximum vacuum.

    I have an old refrigerator out back that no longer works but it may be that the pump still works. I'll have to give it a try.
    I already converted an old electric tire pump/basket ball pump into a vacuum pump but I'm only able to get about 17 pounds of vacuum pressure out of it. I'd like at least 20 in order to de-gas the Plastisol and other resins I'm working with.
    How much vacuum pressure is your refrigerator pump pulling? I wasn't able to get a clear look at the gauge on your video.

      Are you assuming the motor has a separate wire for this purpose? I ask because without it this cannot do anything good for the motor but may do something very bad for the switch that finds the capacitor as a part of the load.
      If there is a separate wire then the motor shouldn't even be able to start without the capacitor (although you might be lucky if it can be very very lightly loaded mechanically to start with).
      In either case, connecting a random capacitor is a bad idea. Use the value the motor was designed to have connected and connected in the manner for which the motor was designed or you might just burn out the motor in short order.
      There is usually documentation on the web (if not on the side of the compressor) that will give you this information. Some Japanese compressor data is harder to find but the others seem to be easy enough if you dig a little.
      I should also have pointed out in my previous post one very important point: unless you are draining the oil out never have one of these compressors anything except upright. Even lying on one side is enough to get oil into the compression chamber and that's enough to destroy the compressor as soon as it is turned on. Every fridge compressor I have ever seen has had this restriction. I have not see every single compressor though so some room for error here on my part. All I can say is I have destroyed compressors this way and avoiding this has never resulted in a destroyed compressor. So I err on the conservative side and keep them upright always. Check the manufacturers, some indicate the maximum tilt, others might but I didn't look that deep.
      Hope that saves someone a world of woe after a lot of work on a compressor.

      Check the compressors amperage.
      RLA (rated load amps) it's what the compressor should be pulling while running could be a little lower or a little higher.
      FLA (full load amps) anything over that value your windings are burning up
      LRA (locked rotor amps) if you achieve this value which is about 6x the RLA your compressor is seized.

      Hi Stephen. With an hardening oil for example linseed (that's what I used) or walnut oil you can make wood more stable and water resistant. When you just put the oil on a piece wood, the oil penetrates only superficially, with a vacuum it penetrates much deeper. There are also different resins that you can use for it, for an even better result.

      Manolo Duda, Home refrigerators today, in the U.S.A., use R134A refrigerant with PAG (polyalkylene glycol) oil.
      European countries may use propane R600A, another story and highly flammable.
      Back to,
      PAG (polyalkylene glycol) oil, absorbs moisture (water) quickly, which will destroy the compressor, and not pull a deep vacuum or any moisture from the container one is attempting to pull a vacuum on.
      Never purchase PAG oil in a plastic container, as it will absorb moisture through the container as it sits on the store shelf, thus contaminating the oil, purchase only oil in metal containers.
      Mineral oil is the preferred oil, for vacuum pumps or compressors that utilize refrigerant R12, but shouldn't be mixed with PAG oil. While a vacuum can be reached with a refrigerator compressor, a Two-stage vacuum pump is desired, when pulling a deep vacuum, for any refrigeration purpose.
      Sometimes the compressor label will list oil quantity, and model number lists in code refrigerant for the compressor, and the manufacturer lists more information.
      Also, One can drain the oil from a compressor and measure the amount, then one will have an idea of the amount of oil that was in it, and have at least a replacement amount.
      The oil should be replaced after every evacuation job, as the oil becomes contaminated and will not pull a good vacuum, which should be measured, and held to at least 500 microns, for 15 minutes with the pump off, and the thing being evacuated closed, and a gauge showing 30Hg alone will not be accurate.
      I would be cautious about using any glassware not approved for evacuation purposes because of the dangers of implosion. Rubber tubing must be suitable for evacuation or it will crush and/or leak air from the outside. Copper is best, and use refrigeration copper tubing, as it is dehydrated.

    How long do you think that compressor will last without oil return

    • @mibob44
      @mibob44 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The compressor has oil in it. the internal pump inside the outer shell runs in a bath of oil.

    • @frun4
      @frun4 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a refrigerator, the oil is part of the refrigerant. It gets pumps out into the system and returns back thru the suction line to lubricate the compressor. You are getting no oil return so the compressor will run out of oil eventually. To keep this running youll want to add mineral oil or POE oil (depending on the type of refrigerant the compressor had used).
