The beginning of Toyota's most glorious years, 1982-1999. The bubble and post-bubble years. It has been a sleeping pill of a car company since the discontinuation of the MR2 and Celica.
I bet the Celica and MR2 re-appear some day. Unless, the Solara re-appears, it may replace the Celica... or maybe even the Scion FR-S replaces the Celica.
Jack Lope Toyota's replacement for the celica was the introduction of the Scion TC. FF configuration with similar coupe/liftback styling makes the TC a suitable replacement. I believe (correct me if i am wrong) the FR-S was supposed to be a revival of the FR configuration of the Corolla, hence the "86" badges on the fender vents.
I bought a brand new 1985 Supra in deep red color and drove it for the next 23 years 275K miles without major issues. I wish I never sold it because Supra has it all: quality, durability, longevity dependability, style, comfort, handling, driving enjoyment, utility, low cost of maintenance.

Most of them seemed to disappear pretty quickly, and now they're almost all long-gone, I guess. Too bad, it was a cool car.
Kind of looks like the luxury version of the AE86 Corolla hatch. Bigger, heavier, way better equipped. IMO its a classic design, Toyota was making some great looking cars back in the 80's IMO.

Had an 85 through most of 90's.. 5 speed made a difference, and it was loaded with features. It even had a small subwoofer under front dash. I simply wore it out and sold it at 285K. It was seen by friends in my old small town for years after.
Motor Week... Thank you for uploading all these classic reviews its got all of the specs and car talk that i need and great car selection, oh the supra with its rear wing that keeps the sun from toasting the rear passengers hahahaha :P
Minor point.... this Light Blue press car is most definitely a 1982 model year, and an early version at that, measured by the front badge missing the "Celica" name. This would've been most likely filmed in the Fall of 1981... probably right around the inception of MotorWeek.
Yea man I had a black 84 Supra and had the windows and hatch glass tinted black. I used to keep the rims clean as hell. It looked like it was from the future
Toyota needs to bring back the supra or celica , i was detailing cars at Toyota during that time cleaned up a white one with leather and parked it in showroom and sold that afternoon, could not keep those cars on the lot for very long really sold quick even more when the turbo supra was introduced.
Awe man you are so lucky you got to drive one! I have an MK3 Supra (my project car) and I really want the Mk4 Supra. It has been my dream car since I was like 9 years old.
one of my favorites. i only wished the electronic gauges came on the GT. they were only available on the other model. i would have bought the other model just to have them. it didnt have the fender flares or rear sun shade wing. had different wheels too. i dont remember if the seats were different or not. but i loved the digital dash. my dad had a 1983 Cressida with the digital dash and i loved it.
I remember back in 1984 I was 18 just graduated from HS and remember taking my parents to DTLA Toyota dealership and remember seeing one in the showroom and wanting one bad but $15k and me without a job wasn’t going to fly,my Mother bought me instead a 1984 Toyota Tercel 2 door hatchback 4 speed stick,no A/C,it ran only $6500 no power anything, that thing was impossible to kill, had lots of fun with it.😊
21/34 is good by today's standard for a 6 cylinder. I had an '84 Celica GTS that is basically this car with a 22RE instead of the 6 cylinder. The GTS had the same interior down to the stereo. I wish I had a one of these but swapped with a 2JZ!
I'm still pissed at myself for missing out on a pristine 84 version of this beauty :( Dream car of mine and tbh I prefer the Supra when it was under the Celica
My dad had a 84 and he gave it to me when I was a senior in high school, I went off into the military went to my first deployment came back with $10,000 planning on fixing the supra, came back and my dad sold it, I was pissed, i miss this damn car every day, one day ill get one
Warpage really, not a dent. That front bumper which is correctly referred to as a fascia or bumper cover, was simply a skin which would secure over a metal bar and shock absorber. It was a decorative piece designed to hide the inner workings of the actual bumper absorption device, whilst giving the car it's lines and styling. They were made of plastic and fiber glass, and these were primitive times for the technology. It was not uncommon for these components to flex, warp, or distort slightly. In fact, very common for the era. I simply point you to other vehicles which suffered from the same; such as 80's CRX, GT fox body, and any other vehicles that used fascias and body cladding.
Wrong the Supra is seen by those who lived those days an over priced slug. The fox body 5.0 is now a legend due to being nearly three seconds faster in the quarter mile than this or any other contemporary Japanese “performance “ model of the era
Bought a clean 86 with a manual for close to nothing in the late 00's. Wish I never sold it but didn't think it would be such a highly desired classic at the time.
They still do. Even though it doesn't have a Toyota badge the Scion FR-S is very much considered a sports car and there is also a few recent Lexus cars that would be considered as sports cars especially the LFA. It still would be nice if they could introduce a Toyota badged sports car. Something that they could do to bring back either the Celica or Supra name is to take a FR-S and swap its engine out with either the STi or one of the 300+ HP Lexus engines. Going with the STi engine would cost nearly nothing when it comes to engineering since the platform already is running a non FI Impreza engine but a V6 from Lexus with a nice exhaust would sound pretty sweet.
Andrew Walters lol that is really just a Subaru BRZ dude. They say Toyota helped develop it, but everyone knows that's b.s. Toyota shouldn't hitch a ride on someone else's stuff anyway, they know how to make sporty cars they're just being cheap and lazy. DoubleD 613 is right...
Poop I think you got it backwards. Subaru would never have made the brz. All their cars are awd, except the brz. The car was indeed engineered by toyota with the help of subaru. The only thing really engineered by subaru is the motor, hence why it's a boxer engine. As part of the partnership, subaru was able to make their own version of the car.
always wanted one. a neighbor had a dark red one for many years. I also like the style of the basic Celica. when they became rounded and jellybean like a few years later I was less interested.
this car is mental, for the budget. I did have a 83 and it had no tuning parts, only minor tweaks and it had top speed 260kph and you could do 200kph even on gravel roads.
They probably couldn't have imagined what the Supra became just ten years after this..... An absolute beast. And they're so rare. Well, at least around where I live. I think I've seen only one.
I believe it was a huge step backward in the looks department. The A80 is a hideous car. When I think Supra, the gorgeous A60 Supra is the first one that comes to mind.
I remember those Supra's being such a big deal when they came out! They were so beautiful, the design was so advanced! I should have bought one, but I was young and dumb.

Later, when I looked at them as used cars, the problem I found was that the interiors did not seem to hold up well at all. So I never bought one. Most of them seemed to disappear pretty quickly, and now they're almost all long-gone, I guess. Too bad, it was a cool car.
One of my all-time fave cars🎉🎉
I worked for Stephen's world of wheels , in CONN. , As a "lot boy " I drove ALOT of different cars , THAT one , was a blast to drive !
Kind of looks like the luxury version of the AE86 Corolla hatch. Bigger, heavier, way better equipped. IMO its a classic design, Toyota was making some great looking cars back in the 80's IMO.
Great car. I think i'll pick one up from the dealer now after this great review.
I had a 1985 Celica, ran it to 190,000 miles and sold it with no issues! I miss that Silver Beast.
Wow that suspension setup seem rather soft. I like it! Just made one of my favorite cars even more of a favorite!
It was pretty amazing to have double wishbone back then. I believe lotus helped them develop it.
yep, it’s super soft when you’re accelerating but seems to be pretty tight when you’re cornering it’s very very cool
@@5MGE I just re watched the video and you're right very little body lean through the cones.
I had the final version of this car, the 1986 1/2 model. I absolutely loved it!
The best and most rare version with that super cool 3rd break light no other MK2 supra had
You mean 85 1/2. 85 was the last year of the “wedge” Supra with both fins on the hatch.
@@gsxerwhite your 100% correct either 85 1/2 or 86 Supra.
@@TheElChayanne OF COURSE I AM!
lol just kidding. I had a 1984 Supra, “gun metal blue” and a buddy of mine liked it so much he bought a silver 1985 Supra. 1986 is when the rounded out Supra’s with turbo option came out
@@gsxerwhite correct once again lol Supras are great cars mostly 82-86 in my opinion
Had one. Bought in in 87....sold it in 03 for a little more than I paid for it. Great car.
this is still one awesome car, I wish I can find one in descent shape.
Johnboy Me too. I've been looking and either they are in terrible shape or whoever owns it doesn't realize it's a car from 1983 and are asking an arm and a leg.
@@frankiejo6988 that's because most people would not be willing to pay the top trim when buying a Celica, and for that reason these are extremely rare cars to find in good shape.
Back when Toyota had cojones! Great car, my uncle had one and my friends dad had one too. We got busted by the cops as my friend powerslid out of a street corner while we were blasting Prince's "1999" song on the radio. LOL. Nicely executed slide, the cop just gave him a warning.
Man I always loved that car, and wanted one!👌🥰👍 and still looking beautiful today!
Had an 85 through most of 90's.. 5 speed made a difference, and it was loaded with features. It even had a small subwoofer under front dash. I simply wore it out and sold it at 285K. It was seen by friends in my old small town for years after.
I had the 77. Got 420,000 miles. Sold it running and smogged.
Toyota Supra - Legend
Exactly, and Toyota is gonna work with BMW and bring it back
juan tafoya i know....what a bummer. I hope that that doesnt mean its going to be an unreliable toyota
Yes. I think it's definitely an 82 because 81 was the last year of the Celica full body..
I miss the days when Toyota built it's own Supra..
These cars were GREAT!!!
when i had mine, everyone thought it was a delorean. the car was definitely was a people pleaser and quick to make you wanna mess around.
Yea man I had a black 84 Supra and had the windows and hatch glass tinted black. I used to keep the rims clean as hell. It looked like it was from the future
@@gsxerwhite i can relate to you on that!
Its was so funny seeing that lady timed the car with a stop watch! LOL
I'd kill for one of these today man. This is one cool JDM
I own and daily drive an 82. with the Celica Supra badge. let me tell you. most fun I've had on the road and on the mountains.
Love the intro and outro music. mmm-tss mmm-tss mmm-tss...
It has been my dream car since I was like 9 years old.
randslites Toyota Celica is just Toyota Corolla in in a different box.
they are bring the supra back what do you think
one of my favorites. i only wished the electronic gauges came on the GT. they were only available on the other model. i would have bought the other model just to have them. it didnt have the fender flares or rear sun shade wing. had different wheels too. i dont remember if the seats were different or not. but i loved the digital dash. my dad had a 1983 Cressida with the digital dash and i loved it.
I remember back in 1984 I was 18 just graduated from HS and remember taking my parents to DTLA Toyota dealership and remember seeing one in the showroom and wanting one bad but $15k and me without a job wasn’t going to fly,my Mother bought me instead a 1984 Toyota Tercel 2 door hatchback 4 speed stick,no A/C,it ran only $6500 no power anything, that thing was impossible to kill, had lots of fun with it.😊
I might be buying one of the 1985 L-types with the digital dash soon.
The Celica Supra MK2 was gorgeous, especially compared to the overrated and quite hideous MK4.
It came with its own blood pressure cuff! @4:30
That car in red is sooo jaw dropping
This Supra with the straight-six and gizmos-galore was an oriental-osprey. It really was well done, just a bit too common around SoCal ha.
I bought an 83 supra not too long ago few months now and its been treating me well very good car
I was 10 years old in 1983 and my Dad bought a silver one at "FANN TOYOTA". It was the hottest car out!
The front is dented @5:53
The motorweek crew did a number on it
Warpage really, not a dent. I simply point you to other vehicles which suffered from the same; such as 80's CRX, GT fox body, and any other vehicles that used fascias and body cladding.
i have one of these and a lot of these front bumpers were all wiggly from the factory.
Today a mustang from same year is trash while the Supra is actually a new classic.
Keep dreaming. Unmolested FOX Mustangs are worth more than Celica Supras.
@@basshead. I have a mk2 supra and its true untouched mustangs hold way more value then a untouched supra
If they didn't rust out.
It would be true, except the Foxbody is a classic.
Wrong the Supra is seen by those who lived those days an over priced slug. The fox body 5.0 is now a legend due to being nearly three seconds faster in the quarter mile than this or any other contemporary Japanese “performance “ model of the era
Sadly I bought an ‘82 Datsun 280ZX the prior year. I really liked this car.
280ZX was a nice car too, especially the 10th Anniversary Black Gold edition.
this was the glory years for toyota cars were rwd and fun not fwd and boring!
Fwd doesn't necessarily mean boring. My 04 celica is fwd and very fun to drive
true i drive a subaru so fwd /4wd here but you cant swing your ass around quite as easy as a rear drive car back then there was options!
Vulgora got a BEAMS powered 6GC with HLSD trans and its loads of fun!
+Vulgora Toyota did not go primarily FWD until 1984.
actually FWD are boring for those who don't know how to drive it properly, I own a toyota celica t23 1.8 VVT-i 192 hp FWD and is very fun to drive
Bought a clean 86 with a manual for close to nothing in the late 00's. Wish I never sold it but didn't think it would be such a highly desired classic at the time.
still have one of these.. It looks like a prop out of mad max road warrior all patched up and hooptie, but it still revs like butter :)
Oh i wish toyota still made sporty cars
AzulBrony I thought the whole powertrain was Subaru as well...
Poop just the engine is
always wanted one. a neighbor had a dark red one for many years. I also like the style of the basic Celica. when they became rounded and jellybean like a few years later I was less interested.
My dream car when I was in High School from the era where imports were far superior to American cars
Such a gorgeous car, that suspension though...... Whooooohiiiii
this car is mental, for the budget.
I would take one of these over a mark 4 any day, honestly besides the mark 5 the mark 4 is my least favorite Supra. It looks so good!
These looked way cool in black or bright red. This body style carried on thru early '86. In '86 1/2, the longer, sleeker looking ones came out.
