I ended here by accident, since I've already played this game. Just wanted to say: it is a bit difficult to adapt to this new combat system, but trust me, it is worth it! It's fun and challenging, and you actually use your brain to attack, instead of just spamming the "x" key on your controller. Thank you for this great guide. I fell into the trap of making all my best cards premium cards and then being unable to fight some of the boss battles. Fortunately now I have a better appreciation of the card system, and have used the premium attack cards as openers for my sleights. I wish I had seen this video before starting the game though as it was really tough coming straight out of KH1 into this.

I've only been playing this game for a day or two and I can already tell this one ain't for me. In my opinion the combat system violates the KISS principle, which is exactly what you don't want in any kind of combat situation. There's so many things to keep track of all at the one time that it ends up being an information pileup. I don't doubt for a second that the card based system would definitely work in a more slow paced or turn based system, I'd pay money for that in a heartbeat, but when you're trying to keep track of everything while dodging enemy attacks it becomes overwhelming very quickly.
The mechanics of the game is way too simple for turn-based as it is essentially just playing War without the luck. I would love to see a more complex card-based system and have that implemented in a turn-based Kingdom Hearts game though. For me, the enjoyment of this game comes from the cognitive overload it induces by having to keep track of everything. It is stressful, but it definitely keeps fights a bit more exciting.

This May be The Best Guide about RECOM's Playstyle and how You Can Have a better Time with the game and more Fun! At 06:03 You gave the player an advice "Stay away From Premuim Cards", but I think this is a good advice but also a bad advice at the same time, When the new player see a 'Premuim bonus' The game does not tell him how do Premuim Cards work, But after the player understands that he may use them as a First card in a Sleight and they may even use that to his advantage at early levels when your CP is low untill you have a CP of 300 or more with at least 12 attack cards and two zero cards to survive for a long battle. At the end I liked This Video and as a player who loves RECOM's playstyle It's nice to see More people enjoy this game.
You definitely have a point regarding premium cards; knowing how to use them well can make your deck so much more powerful. The guide is aimed at new players, so the primary concern is to have them survive. In the video I did say that you could spam sleights, but I didn't say it was the only way to play the game. If you (like me) don't like to just spam sleights, but want to use normal attacks as well, then it can be a lot harder to incorporate the premium cards (especially for new players) and then you risk running out of cards. In the end I just wanted to make sure new players don't feel frustrated playing this game, so we can get more people to enjoy it :) But thanks for the feedback by the way.

I personally found little use out of Premiums up until I got Elixers, which is decently late. If you're like me and spammed Firaga/Blizzaga most of the game, you definitely didn't need the extra benefit from Premium that much. Although, once I was starting to get to the end game bosses and started using enemy cards like Marluxias or the Lethal Frame sleights that used a ton of CP, that's when I learned to appreciate them more. It's a shame you cant make item cards Premiums, otherwise they would be a LOT more useful. Still, people like to say Premiums are complete garbage and never worth doing, but once you get the item cards that reload unreloadable cards, they're definitely worth it, especially if you're a sleight spammer.
@@Forged4War206 Premium Cards can be useful; if you build your deck around them and that's why they're cheaper than normal cards. Like DERIKUF mentioned, regardless of building your deck around them, you still run into a lot of issues using them early on in the game when there aren't a lot of sleights available to you, and you're using a LOT of regular attacks still. I found saving a little bit of extra CP was not really worth giving up the extra flexibility of being able to not always have to stock your cards as much. I think telling newer players not to worry so much about Premiums is reasonable considering that until you learn how to properly utilize them in your deck, they're essentially somewhat of a crutch, and somewhat misleading. I'd say they're for more "experienced" players who are able to build good decks without much help.

Hey, congratulations with the platinum and thanks for the kind words. It is kind of baffling how few good videos has been made for ReCoM (playthroughs excluded) when thinking about how long it has been around.
I think it's simply just due to the lack of a faithful fan base. Re: CoM is arguably one of the least popular of all the games in the KH series, mostly due to the fact it steers so far away from the traditional combat style, and is also balanced quite poorly with very linear gameplay/bosses. You're probably right. I think this game has an undeserved reputation of being a bad game, simply (as you mentioned) because it steers far away from the expectations of what a Kingdom Hearts game is. A lot of people have heard other people say that they should just skip it, so when and if they do give it a try, they go into the game thinking it'll be bad and then play a couple of hours before they let themselves convince that the critics were right. It's a shame really. The game sure has its flaws, but it can still be a fun and interesting game.
@@QuayeEPICGAMER either keep trying and stressing over it, go back to previous worlds and get more cards, or watch a bunch of tutorials. Those are basically your only options
It makes me happy to see someone embracing this combat system and explaining it to other players. Few people play CoM fearing the complexity. A begginer's guide may give a little help to newcomers Bye
I played it in my childhood on the gba and I play it right now on ps4 again and I forgotten how hard that part of the kingdom universe was thanks for dose tipps
Same, in fact I just checked my old GBA cartridge. I got Sora to Level 99 and Riku at 75 with a ridiculously monster deck and I just thought, “How did I play this as a kid back then but now as an adult on the PS4 I can’t fucking figure it out lol. This video some what helped though. Back to wonderland :)
I skipped out on this game due to frustration cause I didn’t understand the combat but thanks for this video I’m gonna go back and playthrough it sometime
Yup. I made that mistake with my premium cards... Upgrading Simba and Genie, both cards I liked to use a lot before upgrading 🙄the game does a shit job explaining ANYTHING before you actually do something new
Thank you for posting this video. This is my second time playing chain of memories and the first time unfortunately I did not complete it because the card system and it was making me confused and frustrated.. thank you for the appropriate explanation. 🎉❤
Larry I know how sleights work I know certain cards are better against certain enemies I know the basic higher cards win thing and card breaks... The problem is that it feels so annoying....if I have a deck with nothing but high cards and good sleights I can still get card broken like 11 times in one battle.
@@sammygorilla8688 I agree it's annoying and I have the same problem but personally I know that even though I have the mechanics of the game down, I still suck and don't think enough about what I'm doing most of the time so if I did I probably wouldn't get caught up in stuff like that as much. Mathematically it should be possible for that to not really be an issue if you're fast enough and know your deck well enough
How to make Re-Chain of Memories easy by someone who struggled with it for a while and at first only played it for the story. Use only 9 and 0 cards. Seriously, those are the only cards you want in your deck. Get a deck full of them and you’re set. Doesn’t matter what keyblade cards you use at first just make it full of 9s and focus on getting more powerful variants later. For 0 cards try to get Kingdom Key ones since they’re cheapest and they’re only for countering so other stats don’t matter. Sleights aren’t really that important aside from Friend sleights which you should use freely, or stock up cards with a Friend card first to avoid losing access to your cards. Farm Moogle points in 100 acre woods at Rabbt’s house and use them to buy better cards (save before buying cards in case they’re crap to save cash). Use room cards that give positive effects only if you can, no need to make things harder. Level up at least 4-8 times in each floor. Near the end of the game, spam Trinity Limit to wipe out encounters easily for tons of exp to level up a ton before the final boss gauntlet.
Haven't put this info to use yet but I'm guessing this will be a valuable lesson for me, I'm getting destroyed and screaming "This game sucks!!"... so thanks for the info, man!
Super helpful!!! Even with the in game tutorials and menus i was LOST but this helped clear up alotz im actually looking forward to getting deep into the game mechanics now that its not so intimidating.
Finished this recently and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The way you can just cheese your way through it with Sleights like Lethal Frame just killed it for me.
This game is so weird. It's basically KH1 combat with an added later of card abilities that operate under a "war" type system. I'll admit, it adds nothing to the experience apart from complexity; and if anything that complexity only slows the action a bit. But if you can appreciate that complexity then you can appreciate the game.
Chain of Memories feels like a Kingdom Hearts game for people who hate Kingdom Hearts games. No matter how strong I build up my deck, number of slights I've added, and variation of attacks I've tried, the bosses always have exactly what they need to stomp me. It feels so cheap. I watch the enemy flip through cards like a madman while simultaneously popping off 7s, 8s, and 9s. Meanwhile I gotta wait and watch 90% of the time as I carefully flip through my deck in response to whatever I see the enemy preparing and PRAY that whatever attack I am about to use will NOT be immediately cancelled out. I can hardly ever get a full combo in, can barely ever heal myself, can't get a chance to reload with items, the limitations just continue to pile up. It's almost a game of pure chance. Even when I do finally win, I don't feel any satisfaction, I'm just relieved that it's over. It's simply too much to keep track of for the level of difficulty and speed granted to the bosses to the point where I can't have any fun playing. There's hardly anything to learn regarding enemy difficulty. No attack patterns, no strategy, no nothing. The difficulty just comes from whether or not your deck is suited for the particular enemy. It's formulaic to the point where it almost railroads you, whereas all other KH games offer a path of least resistance, but still leave room for creativity and experimentation. I'm stuck on Riku Replica after Twilight Town now, and I am not looking forward to the boss gauntlet ahead of me. This is the one KH game that I will not return to nor look back fondly on once it's over.
And then there are also shields, flying enemies, invulnerable Shadows, Blizzaga going outside of field and weird targeting system that can't maintain lock-on on even such small arenas and chooses wrong next targets during powerful sleights with QTE.
DERIKUF I dunno if I like this at all. I really want to play it but I’m stuck in a battle with multiple truffles or whatever they’re called and I have no cards. Real time plus a card game going on at the same time is an awful idea. I don’t think I can do this, what a let down
You lose the first card everytime you use a sleight. If you don't sleight at all you get all your cards back when reloading in battle. With the exception of item cards.
hey! thanks alot for this video dude! i legit was one here to look for a movie version, because i got to heated, and closed the game without even saving haha - but this made me wanna try it again, going from 1 into this, sure made my spamming finger sad
Interesting thing i found is premium cards don't used up in sleights unless they're first. Which is helpful if you're ever putting a support card first in a sleight otherwise I'd put the premium card first. Thanks for the exiting the premium roulette trick though I have accidentally "up"graded some cards to premium that I didn't want to. Premium zero cards are virtually useless to me.
The card battling system works on the GBA because you only need to move left to right in battle mode. Because of the 3D environment, this battle system is very tough to master and a steep learning curve. I best the gba version of this game but in the ps3 version, it is very difficult even on easy to master the controls.
tried playing proud mode on my first playthrough and just gave up and watched the cutscenes 😅 im playing through the series in release order once again and this time i'm planning on actually finishing this game. with these guides and maybe a little bit of wiki help i'll probably be less frustrated lol. i'm still going to stubbornly try it on proud mode though :p
I agree, they definitely have their uses, but until a certain proficiency and understanding of the game has been acquired, I'd still recommend to avoid them.
DERIKUF Thank you for the guide but i think even if some people enjoy this cards system, is was a dumb move for Square-Enix they only achieved to alienate fans of the first two games. I want to play all the KH games but i won't waste weeks to understand how this RE:CoM works. I'll look for a walkthrough on you tube instead.
I'm so confused!😫 I feel db try to play this because I simply can't focus on playing the right card, dodging, collecting the orbs and recharging the deck! So some doors need a specific color and number so why choose one card over the next? The cards that don't have a number are seen as zero? "Upgrading" a card to premium does...something but it makes them disappear the one round you use them? Can you upgrade a cards number? Also I have a card with 0 on it (which I thought that meant it was good) but the description says it's not a very powerful card. Why even have that card if it'll always be beat?
Alright, I'll try to answer all your questions and concerns: - You'll eventually get the hang of keeping of all of these things in your head while fighting, so it's simply a matter of doing it enough so that you get used to it. - When it comes to choosing cards for doors you'll want to choose cards such that you don't run out of a particular card midway and then have to grind. For instance if you have a bunch of a specific card but running low on others, it makes sense to use one of the cards you have plenty of, so you don't accidentally run into a door that demands a card you don't have. When choosing a door card, you should also think about what kind of room you want to have. If you are running low on HP and want to save, then use a Moment's Reprieve to get a save point. - Upgrading a card to premium decreases the cost of that card, but you can't get the card back in-battle by reloading your deck normally (item cards is the way to go). So premium cards are more a trade-off than a better version of your cards. - You cannot upgrade a cards number, you have to buy card packs or hit items to make them drop cards. - 0 cards are very good (some would say OP). While they are very weak when played first (because they can be broken by every card), they are extremely powerful when played last. A 0 card can break every other card or sleight played, so if a boss plays a high-level sleight, then just throw a 0 card to break that sleight.
@@DERIKUF thanks so much! I also have a current question about something called a treasure room. I just finished traverse town and I guess I'll be going to neverland next but there's one more room with an explanation point on it that needs a special card which I don't have. And after I leave this world I have to open new doors to get back but will the room still be there for me to access it? Should I keep opening new doors in traverse town until I get the key card or should I find it through my journey?
You're probably talking about the Room of Rewards. It's a room you can only get into after obtaining a gold card called "Key of Rewards". This gold card can be found by defeating enemies, but only after entering floor 7 or 9 (or thereabouts).
God I hate this combat system, it unnecessary bloated. It would be tolerable if enemies card didn't cancel fucking healing cards when you are far away from them and not at range of their attacks. This is just bullshit and not fair, especially which enimies spamming unbreakable multiple cards attacks or really hard to doge attack (Cloud and fucking Hades). Really considering not beating this game because of the garbage system and jumping straight to Kingdom Hearts 2.
Its new and different. Its about as complex as basic JRPGs were the first time you played them. You don't even have to worry about JRPG stats just card points and HP
I need to start over again omg its too hard imma do it on begginer 😭 cant get passed vexens first fight. I got so used to spaming tornado in the rooms before him
The good news I will say about chain of memories: I encourage you skip it. Slight spoiler, sora forgets everything that happens in it. And KH2 unravels as though you don't really either.
I'm only playing this game to complete the series. The combat is really unbalanced, sleights and magic are broken, friends are useless and they don't work properly because the AI is so dumb. And also, the worlds are way too repetitive and boring. I'm playing in Normal mode because, as I said before, I'm just playing to complete the series. There's no point in playing the hardest mode because the only change is that enemies deal more damage.
No bro xD it's literally just a rule your dumbass missed. You should stick to games you know how to play if learning new things is going to be too much.
At least too easy to break. I'd be interested in crit level 1! It can kind of be emulated by only choosing CP when leveling up, but not using the extra CP.
This Game was the best dissapointment in the Series. Not only because its not well circumsized even the whole story is just poor written. Yoi can see that this is a Gameboy Game.

It's a shame really. The game sure has its flaws, but it can still be a fun and interesting game.
Thank you for this, I've been cussing at this game for the past hour and I'm only 4 hours in
did u get trhu it?
I’m barely five minutes into this game and I’ve been doing this. I’m lacking the resolve to play this game now.

I kept wondering why my cards would run out, now i know. I learned so much from this guide thank you
It makes me happy to see someone embracing this combat system and explaining it to other players. Few people play CoM fearing the complexity. A begginer's guide may give a little help to newcomers
Bye
I played it in my childhood on the gba and I play it right now on ps4 again and I forgotten how hard that part of the kingdom universe was thanks for dose tipps
You're welcome :)
I would say that an extra layer of difficulty has been added by introducing the 3rd dimension, so it might no be as bad as you think :)
This dude could voice an diabolical evil genius or scientist
I skipped out on this game due to frustration cause I didn’t understand the combat but thanks for this video I’m gonna go back and playthrough it sometime
I'd be interested to hear you thoughts about it :)
I didn't have trouble playing until wonderland, the boss (that i struggled with even in kh1 lmao) is so hard
Yup. I made that mistake with my premium cards... Upgrading Simba and Genie, both cards I liked to use a lot before upgrading 🙄the game does a shit job explaining ANYTHING before you actually do something new
I mean premium cards are great to use as the first card of a slight but not every card should be premium
Thank you for posting this video. This is my second time playing chain of memories and the first time unfortunately I did not complete it because the card system and it was making me confused and frustrated.. thank you for the appropriate explanation. 🎉❤
Chain of memories should have used a final fantasy RPG system.
Not the crappy card system.
The cards are fun, I think only people who don't understand how to properly fight think it's bad. The game would suck if it was turn based.
Thank you for informing me of the touchpad casting enemy cards.... thank you
That was excellent, thank you very much for making this guide. I'm playing on Proud and this has made my journey a lot easier.
Turn subtitles on, and it always says cat/cats instead of card/cards. xD
TH-cam subtitles at it again.I guess my accent doesn't help either :D
@@DERIKUF No Problem, man. Your Video is really good, i accidentally found this, and I thought it was kinda funny
Every few months I come back to this video to attempt to play CoM again and beat it this time. Well its time to try again...
Good luck!
Very informative video. Your accent made it even better! I know all about cats now!
Thank you, glad my accent didn't ruin it haha :)
Haven't put this info to use yet but I'm guessing this will be a valuable lesson for me, I'm getting destroyed and screaming "This game sucks!!"... so thanks for the info, man!
This helps a little but this game is so frustrating. I am stuck on Hades and this combat system has me ready to tear my hair out.
Yeah the system is definitely not for everybody.
…… Well now I need to replace all my cards. I didn’t know premium was a bad idea. Glad I watched this!
Thanks for these vids. This game is very complicated.
Super helpful!!! Even with the in game tutorials and menus i was LOST but this helped clear up alotz im actually looking forward to getting deep into the game mechanics now that its not so intimidating.
I’m still at the tutorial for almost an hour and my head hurts
I should have watched this sooner I've been spending all my level ups on hp thinking it was just a loading screen 😐
Ahh, that's unfortunate.
My guy thanks so much. This game is significantly harder than KH1 coming from that game to this one, I appreciate the tips for a beginner like me :D
But if you can appreciate that complexity then you can appreciate the game.
best combat sistem in the non-numbered games of the franchise. once you know how to use status efects, you get to stunlock bosses, its fun.
I used to agree until Melody of Memory came out which I'm really enjoying.
Dude thanks taught me a thing or two helped me and my kids play through, damn premium cards lol
Haha yeah, you've got to be careful with them :)
@@DERIKUF your videos helped me get the platinum trophy today :)
Congratulations :)
Perfect video thank you. Just came off the first game and straight into this...
It's a bit of a rough transition, isn't it :)
DERIKUF I just won’t get it. I’ll move on to the next game.
hey! thanks alot for this video dude! i legit was one here to look for a movie version, because i got to heated, and closed the game without even saving haha
- but this made me wanna try it again, going from 1 into this, sure made my spamming finger sad
I hate this game but love the cut scenes
Many thanks for this, extremely helpful!
The card battling system works on the GBA because you only need to move left to right in battle mode. Because of the 3D environment, this battle system is very tough to master and a steep learning curve. I best the gba version of this game but in the ps3 version, it is very difficult even on easy to master the controls.
It is definitely a detour from the usual combat found in action RPGS, but I find it a fun challenge to master :)
tried playing proud mode on my first playthrough and just gave up and watched the cutscenes 😅
im playing through the series in release order once again and this time i'm planning on actually finishing this game. with these guides and maybe a little bit of wiki help i'll probably be less frustrated lol. i'm still going to stubbornly try it on proud mode though :p
I’m gonna try and play this, I only JUST beat traverse town, wish me luck.
I like having premiums, the lower cost makes it easier to put more cards in the deck; sucks they're one use in battle though.
I agree, they definitely have their uses, but until a certain proficiency and understanding of the game has been acquired, I'd still recommend to avoid them.
Thanks for the guide but I think I am going to skip Re Chain of Memories. For me, it seems like there is too much to keep track of
DERIKUF Thank you for the guide but i think even if some people enjoy this cards system, is was a dumb move for Square-Enix they only achieved to alienate fans of the first two games. I want to play all the KH games but i won't waste weeks to understand how this RE:CoM works. I'll look for a walkthrough on you tube instead.
I completely agree, it's a bit odd to change up the formula this much for a sequel.

This is a great guide, but sadly I'm still beyond confused. I wish the collection didn't have the same achievement list so I could skip this one
Can I use your advice for the GameBoy version?
Yeah most of it should be applicable.

Autogenerated subtitles being spon on as usual :D
I didn't know Zizek played Kingdom Hearts.
This is like a turn based game but punishes for thinking about your next move.
Honestly, I think they should've have just made it all turn based for this one.
I'm not enjoying this game cause of this stupid card system at all .
IMO Chain of Memories is the most diffcult KH and the best gameplay yet due to his combat system 🐸
9 and 0's and I'm good to go
Just finished kh1FM proud mode and i was kinda worried to play COM with it’s durastic switch in combat
I know this video is a little old, but can you do a video all about the Moogle Shops?
Do you have anything in mind? I think it's pretty straightforward for the most parts, but maybe I'm missing something?
This game is so fucking annoying I have no idea wtf to do with my deck I’ve watched multiple videos but no one just says what fkin deck to use
Got the collection thing on Xbox and want to beat them all, I hate life on the second game
Alright, I'll try to answer all your questions and concerns:
- You'll eventually get the hang of keeping of all of these things in your head while fighting, so it's simply a matter of doing it enough so that you get used to it.
@@DERIKUF wow, guess I have a way then. I really appreciate all the info you gave me, it's helped me a lot!
You're welcome :)
I hate this card system. Just can't get into it. Probably just gonna watch a cutscene compilation for the story
Same
great vid
Ive just been spamming sonic blade if you get good rng on bosses it will kill everything
How do you defend yourself from enemy attacks?
You can't block attacks if that's what you mean- You have to either avoid them or break the enemies' cards.
I cant even get past floor 2 it confusing i gave up
This game is too complicated to start organizing decks
The whole card nonsense is a turnoff. I wish they just kept everything how it was in KH 1 Final Mix but thanks for the video
I don't really like card base and srpg but between the two I prefer the latter
The card based is so confusing
Its new and different. Its about as complex as basic JRPGs were the first time you played them. You don't even have to worry about JRPG stats just card points and HP
There is one thing I don’t understand I’m level 47 rn and I still don’t have stop can anyone help?
You get Stop in Wonderland from a Bounty chest.
DERIKUF the bounty chest is the rare card you get to special rooms right?
Nope, that card is 'Key to Rewards', I'm talking about the blue cards 'Calm Bounty', 'Guarded Trove' and 'False Bounty'.
This game works a lot better on the gameboy.
I need to start over again omg its too hard imma do it on begginer 😭 cant get passed vexens first fight. I got so used to spaming tornado in the rooms before him
Before you start over, you should definitely look into fire spamming him to death or use the Sonic Blade / Lethal Frame cheese.
