I saw the Coasters live at the Apollo in the 50s - they were one of the greatest live acts ever.

Harri - I saw a version of the Coasters in the NCO club on my Air Force base in 1967. It's my understanding that there were several versions of the band touring the country at the same time back in the day,

If no one else has said this, the writers were Leiber and Stoller, the same ones who wrote Hound dog for Big Mama Thornton

Those 50’s and 60’s vocal bands were Uber cool!
I think the Coasters may still be touring. Love ya Harri!

"Young Blood" was the 2nd hit for the Coasters in 1957. But their 2nd biggest hit was "Charlie Brown" in 1959, along with 2 other hits in 1959, "Poison Ivy" and "Along Came Jones". Gotta hear them all.

"Along Came Jones" is a trip. I loved that when I was a kid. Similar storytelling to "Stranded in the Jungle" by the Cadets.

@@sourisvoleur4854 I didn't remember the artist, but my friend's parents had a 45 with that song and we would sing along and crack up. "Sllooooww talkin' Jones..." 😂

They were popular around the same time as The Platters. I love the comedy and the soulful harmonies.

The Beatles covered this song (also Young Blood) on their BBC album, 1962. The Coasters had several fun songs.

I saw the Coasters perform back in the 60’s. They have always been my favorite Doo wop group. Thank you for going back this far and reminding me how great the music was.

Having been born in Brooklyn in 1951 this is the music I grew up with. I heard these do-wop groups on the street corners, under the street lights, in our hallways, and in the subways. Most of these guys couldn't afford instruments, so they perfected their acapella skills. By the time I was thirteen I had heard about 100 live R&R and do-wop acts, including these guys. Those were great days man.

I remember they used this song on Northern Exposure when Joel goes to Seattle to search for Marilyn......it was epic. Love love love this song. I also remember it from when it was current. Loved the Coasters.

Glad you are doing more of this fun group. The Coasters had a lot of hits in the late 50's-60's. Most of their novelty songs are fun, happy & a bit kooky. "Down In Mexico", "One Kiss Led To Another", "Wake Me, Shake Me", "Young Blood", "Charlie Brown", "Along Came Jones", "Poison Ivy", "Little Egypt (Ying-Yang)", "Love Potion No. 9" (Clovers had the bigger hit).

So much Doo-wap music started out on street corners.

Most groups of that era began as street corner a Capella groups. They learned to stand on their own with no instrumentation first. So, when they did get bands the backup was minimal. ☺

My Absolute favor Old Timey Group...Down in Mexicali there's a crazy little place I know... Also one of my dad's favorite... Poison Ivy... They toured into the 70's as far as I know.

They did have a lot of hits. This was one of their 3 biggest. It hit #3 on the charts. Charlie Brown hit #2 and Yakety Sax hit #1. They had 2 others on top ten, Along Came Jones and Poison Ivy. And there were others that were memorable that didn't quite make the top ten.
They started in 1956 and had their first big hit in 1957, which was this one. They faded in the early sixties and had their last record on the charts in 1964 at the beginning of the British Invasion.

The Coasters usually had two guys trading off the lead vocals. The lead singer on Searchin' is Billy Guy. He had a scratchy, mousy voice and can be heard on Little Egypt, (Carl Gardner is the carnival barker in the intro), Shoppin' for Clothes, Run Red Run. The most dominant and wonderful voice of the Coasters was Carl Gardner (seen in the photo in the arms of one of his singing mates). Carl is the lead on Poison Ivy, Down in Mexico, Smoky Joe's Cafe, Yakety Yak, Young Blood, Charlie Brown. It's very easy to identify his great voice.
And no, Harri, the Coasters did NOT peter out in the '70s. They continued touring and recording but Carl and Billy had split and were leading their own Coasters' groups up until their deaths. The Coasters may still be in existence today doing oldies shows under the leadership of Carl Gardner's son. At least that's what they were doing a few years ago when I read about Carl's death.
Every so often during their glory days, the Coasters would let their bass singer do a song. Listen to the fantastic "Framed", which has been copied by many, many artists (including Ritchie Valens and Cheech & Chong). It is a masterpiece!

Ha! I should be too young to know this song but my teenage cousins used to play this 45 and dance with me. I knew most of the words after all these years!😂

The Coasters were considered the first "Super Group" and they were around in the mid to late 1950's and a little in the early 60's. Yes, they had a lot of hits!

Hi Harri! Suggestion another cool band, Darts British doo-wop revival band that achieved chart
success in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Darts had a number of UK top 20 hits.

Well, The Beatles (or Silver Beatles) did Searchin' in their early years, in England, and Hamburg. W.G. They did a quality version during their recorded audition for Decca Records. I think it's more George and John, than Paul.
