We just inherited a tenor banjo and are 5 lessons into a life-long journey I hope (my Son and I)...wow...this was moving! Our dearly-departed Neil (father-in-law) could play that on the piano, he loved Joplin! Thanks for sharing!!
I just stumbled across this and I have to say.. wow. This is phenomenal. Seeing two humans, so far apart in age, playing and enjoying this old music. Playing their hearts out on those beautiful instruments. Goddamn. Thank you for sharing this.
@The4stringman Jesse has a Bacon & Day Silver Bell Montana and Norbert has a Paramount Style 1. They are both standard tenor tuning - CGDA. Thanks for your interest. ~Lynne Rock
@bennie697 Norbert first taught himself to play this rag on MANDOLIN based on the PIANO score (he moved it up a half step from A flat to A). When he switched from mandolin to BANJO, he started playing it in the key of D. Earlier this year, he pulled it out of his memory and taught it to Jesse. THANKS for watching! ~Lynne Rock
I was going to ask what key it was in. I completely understand the mandolin/tenor 5th dimension. I going to try to learn this in Ab so I can record playing it with our family instruments. A 1905 Steinway, 1928 Paramount tenor banjo and 1933 Martin C1 guitar.
Hi Lynn! This one is still my favorite! Stefan and I are still learning to play but switched from the Irish picking style to a Ukulele teacher that is helping us explore the jazz and rag time strums/chords! We are playing for our family for the first time this Christmas!
I'm just starting in on plectrum banjo playing (I've been a guitarist for decades) and would love to learn this song and similar. How did you go about learning it? From a teacher, translated from piano music, by ear, tablature, or what? Great job. Sounds great. I love this sort of stuff.

amazing!! I'm a pianist and ukulele player and would like to start with a 4 string Banjo hopefully easy enough to transition from ukulele andmy classical guitar lesson. Which Banjo model is perfect for ragtime and dixieland (I currently play a banjo uke with a dixieland ensemble but want the real deal) THANKS FOR HELPERS appreciate cheerio
Thanks for your comments, Yotam. Yes, a 4-string tenor banjo would be a great fit for your dixieland ensemble! Back when this video was made, Norbert was playing a Paramount Style 1 and Jesse was playing a Bacon & Day Silver Bell Montana. These days, Jesse prefers playing a B&D Sultana. Hopefully you can try out some different tenor banjos before making your decision.
In the US these banjo's are being converted to five strings and in ireland they are playing fiddle and pipe tunes on them. The people that were playing trad jazz for a hobby are leaving them behind.
They play so well and I like the background.
Thanks, Marcus!
I imagine them falling in the lake lol

Enjoy your music - remember me from high school?
Janet Schoonmaker Swan
well, this is the simple life
For the first time in 40 years, can we appreciate the beauty of banjo music without judging them "inbreds?"
I’ll stick to the piano, although this is quite cool.
Actually, they are not biologically related... they are teacher and student.
