This is a fabulous video. Here’s another idea: Experienced bucks will also bed down about ten feet below a ridge line. The turbulent air moves up from the valley warning them of approaching danger. They lye in tall grass and nearly under a bush which helps to conceal their rack. Ear flicking generally gives them away. Escaping is easily done by turning around and retreating behind the ridge. The brush continues to provide cover for this retreat. Look for the flicking ears. Second thought: Never shoot the south end of a north facing deer meaning don’t shoot them through the buttocks. If that is your only shot, let them go. You’ll see another deer. The forest is full of them. Good luck.
Have been frustrated with locating deer and generally figuring out the big woods problem... this video does a good turn and jump started the thinking into more focus. A big help and strong reference here.
My dad and uncle's.. use to work at a xmas tree farm.. that we hunted.. it was like a ranch.. growing up..😂.. The big bucks.. bear and other deer.. would go clear into the underbrush.. of the thick Pine patches and bed.. after pressure.. they wouldn't leave it.. during light.. so then we would push it out.. you would have to.. crawl on your hands and knees to get through most of it.. 💯🤣🦌.. but the big bucks and deer.. loved it.. 😂

Just scouted a new farm this morning that had a lot of cedars with little openings like you mentioned with Beds all around. This reassures me I should focus on that area! Thanks as always, never can get enough of this stuff.
In the South east lol all we have is vast expanses of pine forest. However they do have hardwood bottoms and logging to create plenty of transition and diversity. 1-5 yo planted pines = bedding and food, 6-10 yo pines are normally crowned out and too open below. Then they will start the thinning rotations and it can get real fun from then until they clear cut and start the cycle over again. Thanks Dan
Grew up hunting the swamps in north Michigan.. now hunting the hills of north Alabama.. thick areas tend to be the creek bottoms.. I’m still figuring it out.
Thanks for your content, Dan. I have some patches of young pines on some town conservation land, which happens to be just off a local public hunting piece. I'm monitoring the area with cameras this winter to see if it's worth pursuing permission on the conservation land for next year.

pine trees aren;t the best cover because pine trees grow really tall and when they get over 15 to 20 inches in diameter ,, the first limbs are like 10 feet off the ground ,,,, what you want is spurce ,firs and cedar where the cover from those evergreens are low to the ground

This is huge....I have already bumped 3 deer (at least one was a buck - I never saw the other two) out of thickets of young Pines or Hemlocks....All 3 times I was downwind and got within 20 yards. In my part of New Hampshire, deer seem to love bedding in them and there are plenty of places where young thickets have taken hold. Now all I need to do is get in a tree as close as possible undetected......It's all about bedding, bedding, bedding. It's kinda like the real estate market.....location, location, location.
Dan I hunt where there are a lot of tamarack and black spruce swamps near Ladysmith. Underneath the ground has some water but is covered with some type of low bush and thick moss. have you had experience in this type of swamp? I see some trails but no beds the ground kind of snaps back because its soft and springy. It also doesn't hold tracks at all. Just wondering if you have ever seen buck bedding in this type of cover. I'm thinking they travel through it but don't hang out.
Secluded thickets In the middle of ag fields are usually over looked. Some of the biggest bucks hide in the oddest places. Hunted a deer fpr three years finally figured out he was living I'n a 1/2 thicket in the middle of a field.
Had a spot years ago of small hardwood Islands out in a 3+ square mile tamarack swamp that had a lot of deer sign. Hunted it many times but never saw a buck there. But bow killed my biggest WI buck on the edge where he was checking his scrapes where the point of this swamp stuck into the surrounding hardwood timber. This was two miles from the nearest road, public at that time and I didn't know 10% of what I know now and I'm learning with everyone of your videos. Thank you very much. My favorite buck hunting spots are on the edge of pines. Seems many bucks prefer to travel that edge and I always find rub lines along the edge of pines. Shot many bucks that way.
When hunting edges of Tamarack swamps in northern MN, how do you set up in relation to the wind, and more specifically, where do you allow your scent to blow? I'll guess a setup downwind/crosswind might be the best a hunter can do, but my scent will be blowing uncontrolled into the woods behind me further along the edge of the swamp. Not an ideal setup if I'm not certain exactly where the buck is bedding. Awesome videos, thank you!

Great video, Question for you…when hunting oak woods with pine trees scattered through out. Are you focused on the main transition line where dense pines meet the hardwoods, or the pockets of pine trees that are in the middle of the hardwoods?
Hey Dan totally agree with all the edge stuff but I found out big jackpine stand up here the UP and it had a lot of deer sign and trails through the middle of it. Was curious if you think a mature buck would travel that?
Where I live in New hampshire its really hilly old growth farm land that buts up to big woods. I see most of the good buck sign on the benches that are basically half way up the hills in the hemlock thickets the bottom 1/3rd its hard woods and the top 2/3rds is a mix of hemlock and hardwood . On this particular property im have a hard time finding bedding any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I hunt in and around a big white pine grove with 12’ -15’ pines. There are 2 areas that show promise. One is a big bowl with a rub in the middle of it. Another is an opening like you mention with lots of off season activity. But access is tough without being busted or noticed. Any ideas to accessing these areas without being spotted?
At around the 4:15 mark you found a buck bed and were standing in it. How does that effect him using that bed? Will he abandon the bed? Thanks for your help.
They will abandon it for a while... However, in spring scouting we are looking at fall beds and alot of the time those are not being used at the time frame we are scoting.
Mostly by sign... Rubs will be near doe and buck bedding, but in bedding used by bucks the rubs will be at or near the beds. Rubs by doe bedding will be more along the trails surrounding the beds. Its important to note that does (mostly 1 to 3, or about) will use buck bedding too when bucks are not in there... Doe groups generally bed the fringes up in the dry stuff where buck beds are more deliberate and with purpose and thought.
What would you say if there is about an acre or two of overgrown 23year old pines due to it being a old Christian’s tree farm. Close together great cover year round. Good sign of buck and deer movement. One patch is close to farm land (corn this year) one is a little farther. Thanks Dan !

Speaking of bucks bedding on the edge, I have access to hunt a somewhat large swamp surrounding a lake that is perfect bedding cover with grasses and dry ground near bases of trees. Should I hunt the edge of the swamp edge in evening or penetrate into the swamp 50-100 yards to start?
I would try to guess or pre-scout where they are bedding and hunt as close as possible without getting busted. A lot of my biggest bucks were shot at closing time 75 yards from there bed...
Do y'all ever hunt Louisiana or have any pointers? I learn alot from all your videos but I'd love to hear yalls input on southern deer terrain. Alot of pine plantation with hardwood bottoms through it and also bottomland hardwood swamps. I'd love to hunt where those two meet but so far I haven't found that on public
I have not yet hunted Louisiana... Deer are the same where ever you go, what changes is the terrain... Thicker and greener and harder to read in the south, but they bed the same.

Dan quick question say you have a spot you picked from an aerial and going in blind to hunt keeping a just off wind would you go right to the edge and set up or ease up the edge until you hit good sign? So basically not having scouted the area what’s the best play? I ask this because I just moved and have spotted potential areas hard transitions on public that I know are solid but just curious about the game plan you would have with going in blind. Thanks Dan
I hunt ANF in Pa, big woods. Lots of hemlock stands , not much small pine. Lots of deer sign but little bedding signs or bucks sign( rubs or scraps). Any suggestions
it was kind of interesting how after the shot the lead deer stuck around for a second, but as soon as the one you shot dropped, the lead deer took off. almost like she was waiting on the second deer, and when she hit the ground, she knew it was time to leave
I cut the tape, but seconds later another deer came down the trail and walked up to the dead one and when it got within a couple feet it suddenly freaked out and tore out of there...
Hi Dan. This is my first time writing you. I've often found pines, either thick or low to be great bedding and I typically hunt them in the winter months. Do you think they use pines year around?
I have seen some places where they do and usually it for a specific reason... Like there is an opening in the corn, a ditch, a tree line, or some other way they can protect there bed from all sides. They bed on the down wind edge of the corn, or there is not adequate cover for protection anywhere else.... I often find does and young deer in corn, but if you study how bucks bed, they need security from danger and leaving an opportunity for a predator to sneak in along a row of corn dont fit that scenario most of the time. .
I’d pay someone to show me how to hunt this Deer he’s on the upper 1/3rd and he smells me when I come in Every time. I’m So aggravated. I’m in south eastern ky.

Here in Georgie I see a lot of buck bedding in ditches in young growth pine tree patches. I.E olderclear cuts. Especially ditches with greenbriar.

Found a spot this spring exactly like that surrounded by swamp. Lot of heavy used trails and alot of nice buck sign.

Yes.... Some of that extremely thick stuff is bedded on the down wind edges though.

I would scout to an assumed position looking for sign... No sign, its on to the next spot.
What about open bigger Pines but with a lot of blow downs I’ve seen a lot of beds and those that’s bordered hardwoods

it was kind of interesting how after the shot the lead deer stuck around for a second, but as soon as the one you shot dropped, the lead deer took off. almost like she was waiting on the second deer, and when she hit the ground, she knew it was time to leave
I cut the tape, but seconds later another deer came down the trail and walked up to the dead one and when it got within a couple feet it suddenly freaked out and tore out of there...

Hi Dan. This is my first time writing you. I've often found pines, either thick or low to be great bedding and I typically hunt them in the winter months. Do you think they use pines year around?
Yes, but it depends on the available cover outside of the pines, in winter they are a big attractant in a lot of cases.
@@thehuntingbeast so by outside cover do you mean I am more likely to find them in the pines year around if it's the only cover around?

Great video. Did I hear that we didn’t think mature deer bed in the middle of corn??
I have seen some places where they do and usually it for a specific reason... Like there is an opening in the corn, a ditch, a tree line, or some other way they can protect there bed from all sides. They bed on the down wind edge of the corn, or there is not adequate cover for protection anywhere else.... I often find does and young deer in corn, but if you study how bucks bed, they need security from danger and leaving an opportunity for a predator to sneak in along a row of corn dont fit that scenario most of the time. .
