  • Yet another grey import shipped with an unsuitable power supply, made somewhat worse by the conductive metal parts and target market of children.
I'd like to thank Ray for sending this ornament. He'd received it as a gift, but didn't enjoy the experience of getting shocks from it. The leakage current was low, but still enough to give a very strong zap. Especially when handled while your body was referenced to earth/ground.
The non-polarised LED blocks have simple but clever circuitry, and an equally clever connection system to allow very fast manufacture.
If you have one of these with the non-compliant power supply, I recommend splicing on a chopped USB cable and only using it with a good quality branded power supply from a known source. (Like IKEA, ASDA, Walmart and other retailers that need to protect their reputation.)
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:- www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
This also keeps the channel independent of TH-cam's algorithm quirks, allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

When I was a child in the late 1950s a neighbor who repaired TV sets showed me how to estimate the CRT’s second anode voltage by placing your right elbow on the grounded chassis and bringing your fingertip near the rubber anode cap. The longer the arc, the greater the voltage. That, and some other random line voltage jolts were enough to later permit short, skinny glasses-wearing me to take far more than anyone in my High School including the big macho football team captain on one of those machines at a summer carnival.

I find it fun to turn every 5vdc device w barrel plugs into 5vdc w usb plugs. My fish tank had one 5vdc brick for a tank heater and one brick for the tank light and now it has two usb ends and a single dbl usb plug. Limiting all the bricks I’ve got to plug in makes me stupid happy. It really is the simple things in life that give you the most joy. I bought one of these many years ago, but I hardly used it because the flicker was *horrible* - some of the most egregious illumination I've ever witnessed. You inspired me to disassemble it and now I know why. Mine deals with the unknown polarity of the blocks by using (5V) AC rather than DC. And each PCB (not just in the base block but in all of them) only has *one* LED. So at best each end of each block is flashing alternately, but at worst they're oriented the same way and each block is spending more time off than on in each cycle - which I think better matches what it looks like. The pads and silkscreening are there for the second LED, but someone obviously decided to cut costs. With that in mind I think I'd better test the PSU that came with it as well!
Over the years I have wondered about trying to smooth it out with capacitors or something, but adding those second LEDs and running it from USB 5VDC is probably a much better plan!

I have two sets of these running together. They never worked well just sitting up against each other - at best, they were very flickery and the voltage drop across it meant that the side farther from the power supply was noticeably dimmer. I ended up hot-glueing the thing together, shimming the contacts between pieces with little metal wedges, and manually wiring it so the power is distributed more evenly.
Also, the NA version came with a USB power supply and a USB to barrel plug cable.

This reminds me of this Addam's family arcade game where you hold two metal handles and it shocks you and the shocking gets stronger as the game goes on and lights light up and if you hold on long enough and the lights reach the top it sounds an alarm and blows smoke meaning you've won the game. It doesn't actually shock you just vibrates the handles but the game senses when you let go. I guess it detects the impedance of a person and knows if you let go.

Both laptop and phone were charging, and I eventually worked out there was a significant potential between the aluminium phone chassis (connected to the phone charger ground) and the exposed headphone jack ground (connected to the laptop charger ground). Quite odd; The charger was a genuine Samsung charger and the laptop charger was made by a reputable OEM too. But clearly one of them had bad isolation, and considering the laptop charger has a ground pin I'm inclined to think the phone charger was at fault.

We had one of those plasma ball exhibits it must have been 50cm diameter mounted on a cylindrical I assume laminated board plinth with a flange edged with a wood moulding. Visitors would stand their children on a wooden stool and let them drape over the globe and then complain when the static discharged to earth through the adult by an arc on a point contact (“It burnt my child’s arm!”) when they proceeded to lift the child down. The exhibit got sent back to the builder who said there was nothing wrong with it, as the floor staff tried to tell them, but they insisted and asked for the power to be reduced, which made no difference to the outcome. A great exhibit that needed just a small sign or even metal stools at the location was eventually taken off the floor never to see the light of day again. Edit: I encouraged a teacher to kneel on a stool and place his hands on the globe, then said to the nearest 16 year old pupil, Touch his neck. He was not happy, but the lesson is, use your f-ing brain.

It's the exact same thing. The interference suppression capacitor in the switch-mode power supply is wired between something on the mains side of the supply (often the negative of the input rectifier) and the circuit ground. Without this capacitor the power supply creates _tons_ of RF interference which besides being illegal would result in a noisy video signal in the analog VCR, or reception problems in the cable box.

With the exception of the (hopefully) class Y capacitor switching adapters are still isolated by a transformer. It's just a question of how much they cheaped out on said transformer. Most I've seen have a two-section plastic bobbin which will provide lots of separation but sometimes the windings were also done on top of each other. That's the same level of separation as most switching adapters, all coming down to the wire insulation and any layers of transformer tape.

Speaking of leakage current, a while back I grabbed a random old jug plug power cable and was surprised when the device didn't power on. I thought it was broken and went to disconnect the power lead, but noticed a weird tingle when I touched the enclosure. I immediately disconnected the lead from the power board and checked the continuity and got nothing on the live pin. Plugged it back in and checked the voltage, nothing between live and neutral, but I was getting ~120V between ground and neutral! Didn't think of checking the leakage current, I just grabbed another lead and moved on.
Later that night I decided to do some troubleshooting, so I grabbed my Stanley knife and went at the plug. Turns out the live pin was terminated so poorly that almost all the strands had been torn, and one of those strands was very close to the ground terminal in the plastic moulding. Evidently at some stage the final strands on the live had flexed and snapped, so that's what caused it to stop working. The fact that the live wire was

Anything that contains that goddamned decoupling "Y" capacitor (which all mains power supplies do) will connect you directly to mains AC (and therefore shock you) in any country with a non-polarized mains plug with a 50% probability, even if it's just a USB charger.

    • @eDoc2020
      @eDoc2020 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Half true, it will connect you to the AC line through a capacitor, and the capacitor limits the current to a safe value. In the old days here in the US they'd often use a .05uF capacitor on old tube radios which would pass 2.26 mA, almost five times today's maximum permissible value. Worse it would be a paper capacitor which becomes leaky with time and lets even more current through, I've found one that was a dead short.
