- Here is my reaction to the 2005 romance drama film Pride and Prejudice
First time watching Pride and Prejudice (2005) Reaction.
A story of love and life among the landed English gentry during the Georgian era. Mr. Bennet is a gentleman living in Hertfordshire with his overbearing wife and five daughters, but if he dies their house will be inherited by a distant cousin whom they have never met, so the family's future happiness and security is dependent on the daughters making good marriages.

It's more like Bridgerton is a modern day version, for use of a better word, (set during the same time period) of this.
The BBC miniseries sticks closer to the book and also has the time to delve deeper into the main characters' motivations. It's quite good.
The mother was not exaggerating. Lydia running off would have disgraced the family and would have deemed the rest of her daughters unfit. When their father dies the family’s properties would go to Mr. Colins as a male in the family. It was important at the time for her daughters to be married. Mr. Darcy saved the family when he helped Lydia get married so the family would not be shamed.
The family’s debts would be called in if they had any. Their ability to buy things on credit would be severely hurt. They would not be invited to town events, hurting the other girls’ ability to marry or even socialize at all :/ it was a really big deal.
Also if you think about it, although family is saved from shame from the allotment-there was no proper guarentee any other eligible men would find these girls marriage worthy. So the fact darcy helped jane get married n himself marries lizzy saves them from an unlikely future.
Not u calling Pride and Prejudice "Bridgerton" 😭😭😭😭 hon it's the other way around! Actually, every "enemies to lovers" trope and basically all modern period pieces are inspired/infouenced by P&P
Was just thinking that the billionaire romance trope is basically a P&P retelling!

The absolute lack of chill in Mrs. Bennet (the mom) is true to the book. The reader was left wondering why Mr. Bennet ever married her. But, hey, the heart wants what the heart wants. However irritating her hysterics were, though, she was right to be so obsessed with marrying her daughters off. Mr. Bennet had no son, which meant no male heir in a time when women could not inherit property. Their house, lands, and other assets were all going to be inherited by their cousin, Mr. Collins. That would have left the daughters with nothing, completely destitute, if at least some of them couldn't land reliable husbands. Mr. Collins, ordered to get married by his patron Lady Catherine, was actually offering to do them a favor by marrying either of the two eldest sisters. Even without that, he probably would not have kicked them out of their home upon Mr. Bennet's death, if he was acting on his own impulses - but with Lady Catherine pulling his strings all the time, who knows what the Bennet women could expect? Based on common events of the time, they'd have been fools to depend on a cousin's charity.
I dont think she would have always been like this. She had to at one time been as elegant and poised as Lizzie and Jane, since im sure she had a big part in raising and educating them. But as they had more and more girls, and less and less support from her husband in preparing for the inevitable future i can see her becoming more and more 'hysteric'.
I love you comparing to Mr. Darcy to Batman😂 He really does constantly appear out of nowhere.
But the 1995 Pride and Prejudice is much closer to the book with a lot more details including the original witty dialogue, social commentary, and how society actually worked back then. This version is more cinematic and plays to modern audiences for the romance, beauty, and DRAMA!! Both are amazing in their own ways.
When it came out, the European release didn’t have the last scene at the Darcy estate, so there was no kiss in the entire film
Everyone really did know the choreographies for popular songs back in the day! Or, at least, if you had enough money to afford a tutor or dancing master for your kids. Being able to stand at a ball and dance without tripping/embarrassing yourself, being able to know the dances by heart, was a point of respectability and social capital that proved you were a member of the upper class (gentry, in this instance).

I always thought she saw it as a happy portent, a sign of future abundance. She was in a good mood, expecting her chances of a financially secure future to improve by her eldest daughter possibly marrying a rich man. Noticing a very fertile male specimen, which suggests many future piglets, made her think of good future prospects for her own family.
Corsets are basically bras, and probably MORE comfortable, as they would have been fitted to the wearer
Hm, I've heard corsets can be comfortable, but bras don't press your boobs to make them look smaller, corsets do. Women used to faint a lot and have health issues because of corsets as their organs would be squeezed together all day long.
@@user-qi1gl I said they're basically bras, not that they are the same thing. They're both supportive undergarments. Women "fainted" a lot, but that wasn't because of corsets. It was because of TB, that pale, sickly look became the fashion ridiculously enough. Corsets only cause health issues if you tightlace, which very few people did. You need to remember that all women wore corsets, INCLUDING working class women. Women did all sorts of physical activities wearing corsets, with relative ease.
@@kilianalexander2736 Exactly. Properly worn, they're supportive and assist posture. They're only problematic if they are tight laced, which wasn't the norm.
This movie is such a study in micro acting from a slew of such talented actors and cinematographers. I just paused at 52:37 to note how Darcy literally glitches when Bingley starts to back out of his plan to propose to Jane. He glances over, and glances back, and it's like your can see his mind going "yo bro this was YOUR plan and I came to support you and youre BAILING?" and I just -- love it. One of my comfort rewatches because there's so much going on in every scene and it's so rewarding to catch new things. I was watching how they played with lighting while rewatching this with you! Welcome.~
They're kind of both proud and prejudiced, really, but, yeah, it probably leans more towards proud Darcy and prejudiced Elizabeth.
I feel like I’d go the other way if we had to choose one for each of them. Darcy’s initial objections to Elizabeth have to due with the differences in class and station (and the associated behavior expectations of the family) which is more a form of prejudice, while Lizzie’s objections to Darcy have to due with how she and her family were treated by him (aka her pride was hurt)
@@AdamNisbett Fair enough. I kind of think they're both both, but I was willing to lean towards Joe's view. I remember reading an introduction that called them "the proud Darcy and the prejudiced Elizabeth." You're not wrong, though.
@@HuntingViolets yeah, I agree they both have both aspects. Was just commenting on which I see as slightly more dominant in each if you were forced to pick one for each.
The cinematography in this film is so good! So many cool scenes and transitions. I think I like the dancing scene where all the other dancers disappear the most but it's a close call

I love this film but please react to the tv show only 6 episodes it covers more of the book .. Jane Austen's a genius ❤

I’d definitely love to see more reactors do the miniseries. It’s by far my favorite version of this. The movie is very pretty cinematography but oversimplifies the characters and plot and loses a lot in that in my opinion as it also departs from the book’s character depictions rather than just trimming it down.
the movie is so melodramatic and insists on making everything very serious, it loses a lot of charm that the book had because of that

Emma (2020) is a more comedic take on a Jane Austen story which might be a fun one to react to. Doesn’t hurt that it’s another stunning film visually too!

Corsets weren't really torture devices. They were actually very comfortable.
imho the BBC mini series is the best adaptation, way more details and you learn more about the characters and ofc Colin Firth as a lead. If you want to watch something good with Keira I'd rec the Atonement

After seeing the mini-series I hope you will follow up with 'Lost in Austen' (2007) which is 4 episodes. It's about a modern girl doing time travel back to Pride and Prejudice, and is quite hilarious. They all just accept her and incorporate her into their life. Hugh Bonneville is Mr Bennet.

They wouldn't be Miss Bennet and Miss Bennet, etc. Jane is Miss Bennet. All the others are Miss [First Name]. Another _Hunger Games_ actor is among the Misses Bennet -- Jena Malone, who plays Lydia.
Carey Mulligan, who plays Kitty, is known for _Promising Young Woman, Mudbound, An Education, Never Let Me Go, Far from the Madding Crowd,_ and the _Doctor Who_ episode "Blink," among other things.
Talulah Riley was in _Inception_ and the TV series, _Westworld._

Kierra was both Pride and Prejudice. The story is told entirely from her perspective. We find out he’s introverted and deals with social anxiety.
Yes, she was Padme's handmaiden or something in Episode 1. She and Natalie Portman resemble each other a bit.

If you enjoyed this, I really recommend watching the 2005 BBC miniseries adaptation of Dickens' "Bleak House". It's 15 episodes but the plot is incredibly intricate and well done and the characterization is second to none. Still my absolute fave, Gillian Anderson is unforgettable as the unhappy wife of a baronet. And it's another one of Cary Mulligan's early roles.
Boston Strangler is well worth watching
Jennifer Ehle is also stars in _Possession_ with Jeremy Northam. Lena Headey from _Game of Thrones_ is in it too. Oddly enough, Ehle was Catelyn Stark in the original pilot for GOT.

And Matt Smith is in the GOT spinoff, _House of the Dragon._ I'm probably forgetting something. Oh -- well, of course, Kitty in this is Carey Mulligan, who has had a high-profile career since her appearance in the DW episode, "Blink" -- but she is still definitely well remembered for DW too.

Personally I prefer the BBC miniseries, the cinematography is admittedly nowhere this good, but I just don't think the movie really managed to portray the romance as well as in the miniseries, just by virtue of not having enough time to show all their moments together

The film is very good but the Colin Firth mini-series is so true to the book. Very enjoyable.

I promise to stop back when you watch the BBC/A&E (1995) 6-part "Pride & Prejudice" starring Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. It is the closest to Jane Austen's wonderful novel and accurately show the fashion and societal norms of early 1800's England. Mr. Bennett was a Gentleman with an estate, so his family wouldn't live and dress like the poorest Hobbits in The Shire. 🙂

I prefer the 1995 mini series. Hugely. This version felt... Well, Hollywood? My favourite Austen adaptation, though, is the 1995 Persuasion movie. It's perfection to me as far as period drama goes.

@@MsAngelique well, only if you didn't pull them too tightly. There are some preserved livers and such from back then and they have horrible indents from ribs due to tightly wound corsets. 😢 Those poor organs... all squished together... Those livers looked like squiggly lines where they met the rib cage.
