I dare say Jane Austen is NOT romantic...She understands and describes human nature, the society of her time, and she is always deep,witty,true...I think you will love her books which are so much more than love stories Actually she is considered one of the best writers ! Enjoy !❤
Thanks for supporting the actual literature. My daughters just started reading Austen. What is amazing, are the questions and conversations that are brought out.
It is romance story set in less fortunate times - albeit her characters are more often than not fairly well off through either birth or circumstance. Consequently while it does show SOME society of her time, it's markedly removed from the vastly more dire circumstances of the average Dickens novel. Unless those details have simply been excised from all screen adaptations itt's plain to see that Jane Austen was not at all familiar with the harsher realities of the world beyond her social strata.
One of my favorite movies of all time, the ending with Darcy showing up at dawn and Elizabeth all radiant and in love when she sees him, still gets me all emotional and teary-eyed up to the final scene with the dad. Great movie =)
This is my favorite movie adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Great reaction! Sense and Sensability (1995) with Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson, and Hugh Grant was also very good. Mansfield Park (1999) with Frances O'Conner is another Austen favorite of mine. I would love to see a whole series of reactions based on Jane Austen. Not just her books but there are movies about Jane herself that are quite good.
The 1995 version of Persuasion is pretty decent too, also film length. It's an early work with Ciaran Hinds long before he got his big break as Julius Caesar in HBO's Rome series.
This production filmed Mr Darcy's home "Pemberley" at the site that was Austen's real life inspiration for it: Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. I moved to the UK nearly 20 years ago (Salford, Greater Manchester) and of all the beautiful and historic sights I've seen, I keep going back to Chatsworth. It's beeen called the greatest private palace in England and it does not disappoint. The grounds reflect 500 years of continuous work and planning. The interior is the family home of the Dukes of Devonshire, and the family has collected centuries worth of junk (while being fabulously rich.) The sculpture gallery is real, in one small corner of an opulent wonderland. If you're ever in the area it's well worth a visit!
Mary Bennett is Talulah Riley! She was married to Elon Musk twice. They married, got divorced and then remarried and got divorced again a few years later. She is beautiful and not simple looking like in the movie.
After watching it many years without the ending kiss , I realise that it doesn’t really neeed it . The scene were they are together with the sunlight is the most beautiful scene ever of love . I imagine love should feel like that , like morning fresh , warm …. ❤😊this is my fav movie
"Why is it so difficult for you guys?" Well... I'd narrow it down to two specific reasons. Two character traits that make it hard for them to bridge that gap...
One of my favorite movies. I couldn't believe that was Mr. Darcy actor Matthew Macfadyen in SUCCESSION. Such a different role. Oh, you look a bit like Millie Bobby Brown here.
I'm english but had never seen this. Your reaction to it is great, I've rewatched it multiple times. Inspired me to go visit the location where Darcy proposes in the rain, it was so pretty. Thankyou centane 😘 love your videos, watch you all the time and decided to comment for the first time on a TH-cam video. You really are a beautiful soul inside and out!
there are very few first-time-reactions (for this movie) on yt that I like... because the "slow burn" needs someone whos watching it for the romance, not for reacting. I love how you fall in love with this movie (: it is one of the very few movies in my life that I ever went in blind. It blew me away back then and is a comfort movie now. Thank you for sharing your reaction, I really enjoyed re-watching with you
omgg what a sweet comment! thank you for taking your time to write this, it really made me happy 🥹🩷 I adore Jane Austen's work, never seen her movies before this but usually read her books during my summer vacations ✨ Such a wonderful movie that made me giggle and kick my feet, seen it twice with friends since 🥰❤️
It was interesting how they tried to make Mary (Talulah Riley) look homely but she has a natural beauty that I think can't be covered. The actress btw was briefly married to Elon Musk. She was also in the movie Inception.
Cool to see Mr. Bennett played by Donald Sutherland (Kiefer’s father). For a great suspense film starring Donald Sutherland, check out The Eye of the Needle.
I loved watching your reaction and your complete enjoyment watching this film! Two film recommendations that I’m sure you’ll enjoy. 1) The Jane Austin Book Club, it has lots of drama and romance as they read Jane’s novels! 2) Bride and Prejudice. A wonderful Bollywood version (although actually produced in England) of Pride and Prejudice. I’m pretty sure you’ll be laughing in delight when you see it!
There is one thing that you misunderstand is about Mrs. Bennet (the mother) being happy that Lydia was getting married. The money in the letter about $100 a year is the money the parents have to give Mr. Whickmen to pay for Lydia’s expensive for the year. It was a custom in Britain for a long time. So the money is not going the parents at all it’s the other way around. The mother was happy that Lydia got married is because if people found out that Lydia ran way and slept with a man without being married it would ruin her reputation literally forever. But not just Lydia but the whole family because if Lydia has no moral so does the family. So none of the daughters would be able to get married because their family reputation is gone. Pretty much destroying the family and being outcasted for everything. So yes Lydia getting married before anyone in town knew she ran off was a great blessing.
One of my favorite things in the book, is when Mr darcy says " shes perfectly tolerable, not handsome enough to tempt me" but then begins thinking of how beautiful Elizabeth really was. Her eyes, her skin, her charm. And it was over for him, he couldnt stop thinking of her!!
If I remember correctly, the controversy over the final scene in the film (the version we received in America) was over the kiss, because “they never kiss in the book”. Personally, i think its a perfect ending for them.
This is a good adaptation of the book, though the '95 BBC series is brilliant and really fleshes out the story and characters. The '96 Emma with Kate Beckinsale is also good, as is Northanger Abbey with Felicity Jones.
My favorite actual adaptation that I actually understood certain parts and why was the BBC miniseries with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth! My favorite British 🇬🇧 films of the two stars here individually are Atonement and Death at a Funeral. Both must-see's!
Your reaction is the best I've seen so far. Thank you for including the "US special" ending. It was not included (I believe) because it's not in the book, but it totally fits with the characters and the story. I don't think of Pride and Prejudice as a romantic movie (like The Notebook or some Hallmark Christmas special) but rather as a study in human nature when said nature puts duty and loyalty ahead of itself. Because that is what Mr. Bennett, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth are doing. Donald Sutherland gets me every time at the end, when his eyes fill with water, for all the love he has for his daughter, and how much he wishes for her happiness. I never get tired of watching this movie.
Since you enjoyed watching this movie, you should also watch: Emma - 2009 Becoming Jane - 2007 Sense and Sensibility - 2008 (‘95 version was alright, but ‘08 is far better) Love and Friendship - 2016 As for other very notable films: Doctor Thorne - 2016 (absolutely Love it) Belgravia - 2020 Anne of Green Gables - 1985 (Megan Follows did absolutely superb acting throughout the series) Anne of Avonlea - 1987 Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story - 2000 All are very good films and will forever be timeless classics, enjoy watching them when you get the chance.
Most of those are TV series with 2 or more episodes. Also Belgravia is not based on any novelist of the 19th century as with the rest, it's just Julian Fellowes (aka Downton Abbey's creator). Plus Becoming Jane is a fictionalised account of Jane Austen's life before she wrote her first novel, rather than an adaptation of her work. IMHO Belgravia is a bit of Vanity Fair mixed with Downton - it seems like Fellowes's attempt at being edgier, more Dickens esque, but many of his same writing tropes seep through onto the screen. There are definitely better picks like Little Women to choose from.
A look into the more didtant past since the novel was written in the early 19th century. Great pick Kamilla and as usual a wonderful reaction even though you're still recovering.
This movie contains one of my favorite pieces of acting ever. I remember it's around 19 minutes into the movie when she surprises Darcy, his facial expressions are great, several emotions at once. To add some suggestions for more, here's my top romances list. 1. An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) 2. Sense and Sensibility (1995) 3. Beauty and the Beast (2017) 4. Casablanca (1942) 5. Groundhog Day (1993) 6. The Remains of the Day (1993) 7. Eyes Wide Shut (1999) 8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) About Remains of the Day, Eyes Wide Shut and Eternal Sunshine, while still being about romance at their core all have some very unique perspectives of it. Especially Eyes Wide Shut which have several widely different possible interpretations.
The actor playing the Bennett family patriarch (Donald Sutherland) has passed away age 88. A great body of work he leaves behind, and worth exploring (please watch ORDINARY PEOPLE as soon as possible).
Speaking of Jane Austen’s adaptation, I would love to see your reaction to SENSE AND SENSIBILITY (1995) as well as the Indian Tamil-language adaptation of the same story set in the modern day (KANDUKONDAIN KANDUKONDAIN (2000)).
For those here who are young, and maybe have only seen Donald Sutherland in P and P or Hunger Games, check out his seventies movies, "Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Klute (especially!) and Mash." He was magic.
I'm glad you reacted to the European version (released in europe), as it is more true to the book regarding the ending. For Jane Austen purists, the sight of two characters sharing a kiss in a screen adaptation is enough to set hackles rising. There were no kisses in Austen's novels. Us public always need kiss and ship people. It’s tiresome.
Seems like a good setup. Your audio is slightly distorted but generally good. Maybe the positioning of the mic? But the camera is just fine, lighting up your face to separate it from the background. If you're more comfortable (especially for a couple of hours sitting), keep it!
Love this movie and the great story by Jane Austen ❤ Also love "Sense and Sensibility" movie and story ❤ Have You seen it and made a reaction video to it? Thanks for sharing your reactions 🙏❤️
If only we could have all the great, nuanced acting and proper time spent on the story of the 1995 BBC mini series, just with the cinematography and score of the 2005 film. As much as I truly love the 1995 mini series it looks and sounds horribly dated as TV standards go compared to what BBC do today, they definitely cranked up the quality of their output as the digital revolution helped to bring them more in line with film. IMHO the 2005 film rushes through the plot to fit it into a 2 hr runtime and it loses all of its subtlety and nuance. Plus IMHO early Keira Knightley hasn't 1/10th the acting ability that Jennifer Ehle had in 1995. So often in this film Keira just seems to stare at the camera with a gormless expression fixed on her face that seems far more suited to modeling clothes than acting in a Jane Austen adaptation - you can only argue so far that the runtime prevented her from doing it justice when Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet showed far more in Sense and Sensibility.
I'm a guy and yes I admit I have this movie in my DVD collection. Even though times have changed so much since Jane Austin's day, the story is really timeless because human nature always stays the same. I think one reason it's been so popular is that it's so relatable. People tend to keep their true feelings hidden and are too quick to judge just like in the story. So many relationships never happen because we play games to protect us from getting hurt. I can really relate to Darcy here, with his difficulty in approaching Lizzie, and like him I tend to be reserved with others until I get to know them, and I know what it's like to be misjudged because of it. I'm not as judgmental as he was, but I think a lot of that comes from the time he lived in and the rigid class system in place in England back then. I think this is the best adaptation of the novel ever done, and I give a lot of the credit to Keira Knightley's performance. She really shows how complicated Lizzie is and makes her change in feeling's toward Darcy very believable. You can see the depth in both her character and Mr. Darcy's and how they both gradually change. The whole cast did well. Donald Sutherland as the long-suffering but even-tempered Mr. Bennett stands out to me as well. Kamilla, I think you'd really like the 1996 version of "Emma" with Gwenyth Paltrow, and I'd suggest it for your next Jane Austin/romantic movie reaction. It's a little bit lighter fare and really well done. p.s. I almost watched P & P the other night but passed on it (tends to make me think of a certain someone) but this reaction has inspired me to put it in and watch it again!
Jane Austen was a women before her time. The new notion of marrying for love was quite difficult to live by in this day and age where women were seen as means to an end, to be connected to finest families and to bring more wealth to the family. Lydias own dad did not think any man would marry her for less than 100 pound a year, for love though??What is a women worth? It is mother Bennet that definitely personify the suffering with having only doughters and no heir. Mr Collins their cousin is the heir to their estate/family home. The crazy elder biddy that is so engaged in marrying off young women, the women main characters that live quite different lives but does all get entangled from birth with money, security and wealth and the handsome men that chooses to marry for love, even though their family disagree is the plot for many of her stories. So her main subject is love and money not romance as such. that is her wishful thinking, a little bit of escapism.
I loved that you were so engaged by the story and plan to read the book. Austen’s last four books are among the greatest of English literature, and her first two are also good. It’s a pity you chose this version, which is a complete botch of the book. Everything that is good in this movie is due to Jane Austen, and everything that is bad, which is considerable, is due to the poor script, strange casting, and bad acting/directing choices. Much of the acting is off key, and the interpolated dialogue and invented little moments are jarringly modern. It is especially amazing that, presented with some of the wittiest dialogue ever composed, the screenwriter chooses to reject it and substitute her own flat phrasing, thereby damaging one of the story’s glorious means of character development (i.e., how the characters speak). Even if everything had been good, it is impossible to do justice to the story in less than 3 or 4 hours. After seeing all the adaptations, I recommend the 1980 British TV version, adapted in five parts by the distinguished writer Fay Weldon, as the best. The slightly longer, 1995 British TV version is also outstanding.
Nice review, if you read up a little about Regency England so much more becomes clear. Modern Americans don't have a clue about the necessity for the Bennet sisters to find a man of means to marry and what their life would be like if they don't...That was a reason why Charlote married Mr. Collins, because married life with him was better than her imminent future unmarried. No welfare state to help her survive...Also, Lydia "living is sin" with Mr. Wickham was a big deal and would have destroyed any possibility of a Mr. Darcy - Elizbeth marriage not to mention the family disgrace.
No, not in the book, I've heard it said the director wanted to the be in the movie to show just how everyday life for the Bennett's was as having to have/deal with a pig in the house was the norm.
The 1995 version is the best , simply because you spend more time with these wonderful characters. But I would also say that you might try Lost In Austen. A mini series where the main character is a modern 21st century Jane Austen fan who is transported to the land of Pride and Prejudice. Hilarious fun. th-cam.com/video/Izjns3b0Izk/w-d-xo.html
Bridgerton ruined younger people who feel everyone from this time period just kisses and has sex, that was very improper and even men of a certain class abstained. They had to pay Wickham 100 pounds..he didn’t pay them.
Kamilla I hope you are recovered soon. I guess this one got taken down? You tube seems so random about this. The studios should realize the benefits reactors give for their films

You should also watch the movie version of Sense and Sensibility. And yes, you should definitely read Jane Austen's novels, beginning with these two.
"Not all of us can afford to be romantic." = "Not all of us look like Keira Knightley in her prime."
6 women in the same household. A day without chaos is far and few between.
I would LOVE for you to react to the P&P BBC miniseries!
Circa 1797. 5,000 pounds then would be like 787,000 today. 10,000 then would be like 1.5 million pounds today.
Yes there is an ending kiss
i am happy you watched this, cute movie
You should watch Bridget Jones Diary it's a funny early 2000s romcom based off of pride and prejudice
If you like the movie - Pride and Prejudice, then you will love the Series Poldark (2015-2019).
Kamilla ! Kamilla !!!.. You are ... Amazing !!!
You should watch it from wherever you are most comfortable. 😊
Another good book from Jane Austin is EMMA.
her name is AUSTEN
Love this reaction. You should watch Emma with Anya Taylor-Joy 😊
This version isn’t a patch on the BBC version!
You should watch the BBC 1995 version. In my opinion it is the better version (although I love the 2005 movie too).
❤️❤️❤️
Centane, please react to "Sense and Sensibility" from 1995.
You need to watch the 95 version
Great movie. Superb acting...... MacFayden was the perfect Darcy......sexy and dreamy
You should watch Jane Eyre from 2011.
Hope you feel better soon
Thank you ✨
Now for Pride, Prejudice and Zombies.
I have never heard anyone explain the pig in the house and Mrs. Bennett's odd reaction to seeing it's testicles. Is that in the book? Anyone?
If my memory's correct, I don't think there's any pig in the book, and there's definitely no reaction to any testicles by Mrs Bennett 😄
No, that's not in the book.
No, not in the book, I've heard it said the director wanted to the be in the movie to show just how everyday life for the Bennett's was as having to have/deal with a pig in the house was the norm.
@@ianalsop5080 I realize that but the salacious look on her face seemed odd.
"Scuffed?" You watching it on VHS or DVD? Surely not digital
Oh that dreadful kitchy mess in the US version is such a disservice to what otherwise is a rather wonderful film!
React to Deadpool and Wolverine
Wuthering Heights (1992)
Consider watching Walk the Line, about Jonny Cash. Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix play the lead characters.
Bridgerton ruined younger people who feel everyone from this time period just kisses and has sex, that was very improper and even men of a certain class abstained.
They had to pay Wickham 100 pounds..he didn’t pay them.
Can’t wait for the Arachnophobia reaction! 🕷️🕸️
😅🤍
please react to Emma (2021) wich is another amazing adaptation from jane austens books
I like this movie but BBC 90s series version is the best.
Kamilla I hope you are recovered soon. I guess this one got taken down? You tube seems so random about this. The studios should realize the benefits reactors give for their films
No romantic movie will compare to this one
By the way girl you are gorgeous
Love you...❤
