nicely done .As far as witch amp is better playing in a room with a amp and playing with a band is different as to much low end on guitar you won't cut through the mix. i use a jcm 900 mk3 at gigs . on your demo i do like the dsl 50 a lot
I put a blindfold on and all I could hear was Marshall. You really can't go wrong with any of these, although I'm not sure that the MS2 is gigable (if there is such a word). Thks.

I'm biased as hell for the DSL 50, because it's the second Marshall I ever owned and it's been the most loyal. Hard to match in my opinion, but the Vintage Modern is an amazing amp that's sadly overlooked, much like the DSL50. But hell, I liked em all! It's a Marshall, man!
JCM900 7:37 sounds like it's falling apart while breaking up. Vintage Modern 3:42 sounds so thin JCM800 2:55 sounds super dark, bordering on muffled The TSL really did it for me.
The vintage modern is meant to be using G12C speakers which are very dark, my amp sounds nowhere near to this video, you might check Leon's other videos on VM to have much better idea, it's a great amp and I have/had few to compare - a JTM60 (ok), MA50 (meh), VM combo (favourite amp), Peavey 6505+ (yay), Fender DR 68 (yay), Carlsbro Top50 Evo (yay), Egnater Renegade (ok/yay) etc As a general rule - dark amp+bright speaker (ie TOP50+V30), bright amp dark speaker (VM+G12C) or clean amp+clean speaker (fender+v-type). Carlsbro TOP50 with G12C's was a pile of mud.
The guy always seems to set the Vintage Modern up to sound like shit. In reality, you can match the frequency response and gain level of all these amps so they are almost impossible to tell apart. FACT.
I have the JCM800..JCM900..MG 100FX..MG 100HDFX..All four of these Amps are incredible never a single issue and I will not put one over the other.. all sound fantastic
@Jeff Dowell when dialed right, an MG can create a great sound. So can the misaligned Mode Four, which is phenomenal in it's own right. Obviously I favor tubes over solid-state but that's a matter of preference, style and dialing
I love mine, although I only use the Crunch and Lead 1 channels. The clean is far too quiet - the step change in volume is massive. Lead 2 seems an unnecessary channel. Don't use the Tone shift button and keep the Deep switch on.

The lead 12 is amazing ! Great sounding amp without any tubes .... awesome . I have a thing for that TSL100 ..... need to get one . Have had many DSL`s and a few 900`s . But that TSL100 in this vid has really captured my attention . VM yes of course great !
I used to have a Lead 12 head. I really wish I didn't sell it. Probably the best sounding solid state Marshall head. I also have a 50-watt 800 and 900. Those two are absolutely killer for shows.
I thought the TSL lead channel with tone pressed and the deep on it was very comparable to the vintage modern. I would go with the TSL because, well it has 3 chnls, 2 effects loops with a mix knob just seems like a more versatile amp and seems to achieve a very close tone to the VM.
Thanks for the effort, but I think all those amps could be made to sound a lot better? Either muddy or over the top screeching (jcm900). Lead12 and TSL/DSL worked best in this setup, but the tones are there in all these machines for sure.

I've owned versions of all those amps except the VM - the DI he's using sucks or recording path. I had a TSL 60 which everyone hates but you could get harmonics for days. This just sounded like crap.
The JCM 900 he is using here isnt a Dual Reverb FYI. BIG misconception about the namesake. There are in fact, 3 JCM900s and neither have a thing to do with one another other than share a name. He is using the first JCM 900, known as a Mk3, which is basically a slightly modified and brighter JCM 800. There is the widely known JCM 900 Dual Reverb 4100/4500 and the lesser known JCM 900 SL-X 2100/2500. I happen to have owned a Dual Reverb 4500 and it was awful in my opinion, so I sent it back after one month and got a 2500 SL-X which is basically a JCM 800 2204 that's been highly hotrodded with an extra gain tube in the preamp. But it's rude to trash a man's amps
I used a Marshall JCM900 the other day at my local rehearsal space. I started looking into possibly buying one :) I've been using a Mesa Dual Rectifier the last 7 years. For years before that I used amps made by Crate, Line6, and various no name brands. My friend happened to be thinking about selling his JVM410h. I tried it, and bought it off him for a great price. He also lent me his JCM800. I still want that JCM900 though =/ If John5 would stop buying them all, then maybe there would be some left for the rest of us...
The 2 DSL’s sounded the best to my ears. Vintage modern sounded good but was a bit thin. Having said that this is all on TH-cam and all would sound different in a live setting. I’m sure you could dial them all in to get great tones. Great demo Leon love your channel mate.
I love your channel, man - every upload is solid gold! I have the VM (2466) and the TSL100. Love them both. And wow, that Lead 12 really knocked me out - that thing sounds great!
I think the DSLs are good modern, vintage-voiced amps. They sound like what I'd hear a 1987X that's cranked to high heaven with a more modern voicing, but the Vintage Modern really has a bloom that knocks the other guys out, even the JTM45 seemed a little rounded and tame compared to the VM. A cranked 1959 SLP or a 1987x would round it out, I think.
With the Jcm 900 2500 MKIII (not the dual reverb), you gotta patch the fx loop send and return if your not using it. Found this out after having mine for years. Adds more balls and tone. Also, This version of the 900 turned into the SLX after a couple of years.
I thought the 800 was a bit meh (for an 800!). The TSL 2000 was a bit brighter but still had weight, the VM was half awful half decent. JTM clean wasn't great but broke up well for that style of playing for sure. 900 was fizz city. I actually really liked the TSL of all these which nobody else seems to think which is cool too.
You ever had a bash on a JVM dude? I borrowed my bandmate's 410H for some recording, liked it so bought one for myself, but then abandoned it for my Dual Rec for months. Then I came across a bunch of easy mods, so I opened it up and started tweaking, and now it's probably my favourite amp.
Right, yeah when they're stock they're very meh. Sounds a little processed and sterile. But they're very well designed and definitely worth putting some time into when you get the chance.
YO can we talk about how tasty that little Lead 12 sounds? Holy crap. That thing just sounds like tons of fun to noodle around with late at night. Pure rock n roll sound for days out of such a small package!
I liked both DSLs and the TSL equally, followed by the Lead 12. Nice video, and awesome collection of Marshall heads. I'd never leave my bedroom if I had all those goodies!
The JTM45 is my pick but that Lead 12 sounded surprising good as did the Toy. Goes to show you if you know how to setup a amp properly you can get a good tone out most any amp.
I think your JCM900 is sick...mine sounds KILLER!!! Awesome run through though, Always surprised by how the DSL sounds so good on its own, but gets lost more easily in the mix than others on the "red" channel. Cheers!
J.P. Rosentreter that was what I noticed when I owned one. Always stayed on OD1 and stayed off the shift button. Like my Krank 1980 more and am trying to see if I can get some savage tones out of a Chadwick or not.
The diversity of preference here says it all. They all sound like a Marshall and in a blind test I doubt any would stand out beyond personal preference. I've played a 900 since new 1990 (ah crap, am I that old!!). Still love it.
Interesting comparison, and I realize I should not sell my Lead 12. Not until I have saved for a JTM 45. Imo the only one sounding better. As number 3 I put the JCM 800.
Hmmm, seeing alot of hate for the jcm900 here, but I've owned all three jcm's 800, 900, and 2000, and tbh, the 900 was my favorite...maybe it was my setup for a cpl years using the 900 with an american strat, a pre-amp boost, and a cpl efx pedals, but it was the best sounding rig/setup I've ever had. The 800 and 2000 rigs didnt suck, but the 900 was best for me.
Hi Leon! The Vintage Modern is a good mix of plexi sounds that have made the story of Classic Rock music with MV, Loop eff, and controls that make it easy to get the right sound with HB or single coils. VM has, i think, its own sound, not to pretend to copy exactly 1959, Jmp or Jcm, but riding in that plexi world today! I know you love dsl 50, between dsl 50 and VM, for L Kravitz, Oasis, Radiohead, Beatles, Black Keys, J White style music...which one would you choose?...thanks!! Marco.
I guess if you know each amp well, you can tell what buttons are being pressed, but I had no idea what was going on. The DSL sounded the best to my ears, but I'm not sure each amp was dialed into its sweet spot.
The JCM800 continues to surprise me with how drastic the tonal differences are between different versions. The more I listen to various models the more I'm convinced a 2203 or 2203X is the only way to go.
I always wondered why the TSL gets such a bad rep online... My band mate has had a TSL60 combo for years and it sounds amazing on all channels, you just need to take your time to dial it in right
I own a DSL100HR and love it(played many a' jcm2000 dsl's, they are great but I prefer the upgraded 100HR the tone is still there but with more features and better interface), I truly can get seriously close to any other marshall tone with it. It really can do most anything. But anyways I'm lost on your comment, did Jim say something about preferring a DSL at some point in his life??
Hey Leon you get to try the newer DSL100HR’s yet? Just grabbed one a great price and gotta say I am very impressed. More rounded sounding, the highs were tamed. Has the old DSL feel to it. Curious to see what you think when you get to try it out.

What do you think about tsl60? The only way i can get nice distortion sound is to use with maxon od-9 on clean channel or few overdrive on od channel with maxon od-9...

Btw dude. What do you think of the new DSL's? How do you think they compare to the originals? I've played through the DSL40C and my friend has the 100H and sounds awesome. That said I've played the DSL401 and that was a really good combo. The 2018 DSL update with the Dual Master Volumes looks great too.
I've used a DSL100H as a backline amp a few times on tour and I liked it; the depth controls makes more sense than the deep switch IMO. Dual masters is really cool too!
For some reason i always assumed that Marshall was an American company. It just seemed to fit into my mental image of classic Americana along with Fender guitars, Harley Davidsons, and Cadillacs. I guess that's a big one for the Brits.

@leon todd Tsl 100 head really has organic and awesome and punchy tone, what is your idea about jcm2000 tsl 602 combo with wolverline celestion speakers? Is this good as well as "jcm 2000 tsl100 head" ??
TSL 602 is great just change the speakers.I ve replaced mine with Vintage 30s made in Engalnd and i have great tone even though i m still thinking that if i find another pair of tubes i ll manage to have better tone.
If you live in a world where volume isn't an issue, and you can crank all these. Since the cathode follower, tone stacks, Schmidt splitter, and the rest of the power amps are virtually identical, they're all going to sound similar the variations are in the preamp voicings. keeping the gain lower and the volume up is what's going to give you the ability to make that TSL 100 sound like a 1959. And that's a fact.

I’ve had my TSL since 98. I had to have the main board replaced a couple of years back. But it’s my main stay. Absolutely love it. 🕶🎶

The VM and Lead12 were my two favorites. Always loved the VM though. It has the fattest sound with the mid-boost in!

That JCM 800 is a model 2205 or 2210, IMO, those don’t compare to the 2203 (100w) or the 2204 (50w) which have a sweeter breakup and aren’t AS dark.

There's no addressing the over the top screeching of a JCM900.

900 shits out a lot of the 4k frequency more than any other. The worst frequency out of the whole spectrum for distorted guitars.

Its amazing how open sounding the jtm was compared to all the others. My second choice was the lead 12 lol. Seriously the rest sounded way compressed

J.P. Rosentreter that was what I noticed when I owned one. Always stayed on OD1 and stayed off the shift button. Like my Krank 1980 more and am trying to see if I can get some savage tones out of a Chadwick or not.

totally agree, JCM900 MkIII is the best Marshall for me, I have one also... but in the video... sound is so flat and muddy...

Nice video. I liked the TSL the best. I also own two TSL60 amps. The Lead 12 also sounded good. I also own one of them too.

Enjoyed the JTM45 the most. Seemed to have rhe the least annoying frequencies poking out.
The diversity of preference here says it all.
They all sound like a Marshall and in a blind test I doubt any would stand out beyond personal preference.
I've played a 900 since new 1990 (ah crap, am I that old!!). Still love it.
Interesting comparison, and I realize I should not sell my Lead 12. Not until I have saved for a JTM 45. Imo the only one sounding better. As number 3 I put the JCM 800.
robin trower uses vintage modern last i heard,the old ones were great, plexis an jmp,whatever,but recquire upkeep after a bunch of years, he said..
JTM45 hands down for me, but I also like the Lead 12 tone, honestly.

Hmmm, seeing alot of hate for the jcm900 here, but I've owned all three jcm's 800, 900, and 2000, and tbh, the 900 was my favorite...maybe it was my setup for a cpl years using the 900 with an american strat, a pre-amp boost, and a cpl efx pedals, but it was the best sounding rig/setup I've ever had. The 800 and 2000 rigs didnt suck, but the 900 was best for me.
I prefer the two JCM 2000/ DSL and the small head.
The one i like less is the JCM 900. And the Ms2, of course!

Hi Leon! The Vintage Modern is a good mix of plexi sounds that have made the story of Classic Rock music with MV, Loop eff, and controls that make it easy to get the right sound with HB or single coils. VM has, i think, its own sound, not to pretend to copy exactly 1959, Jmp or Jcm, but riding in that plexi world today! I know you love dsl 50, between dsl 50 and VM, for L Kravitz, Oasis, Radiohead, Beatles, Black Keys, J White style music...which one would you choose?...thanks!! Marco.
I guess if you know each amp well, you can tell what buttons are being pressed, but I had no idea what was going on. The DSL sounded the best to my ears, but I'm not sure each amp was dialed into its sweet spot.
The JCM800 continues to surprise me with how drastic the tonal differences are between different versions. The more I listen to various models the more I'm convinced a 2203 or 2203X is the only way to go.

2204's are the ones to get. The 50 watters are more toneful.

I always wondered why the TSL gets such a bad rep online... My band mate has had a TSL60 combo for years and it sounds amazing on all channels, you just need to take your time to dial it in right

I own a DSL100HR and love it(played many a' jcm2000 dsl's, they are great but I prefer the upgraded 100HR the tone is still there but with more features and better interface), I truly can get seriously close to any other marshall tone with it. It really can do most anything. But anyways I'm lost on your comment, did Jim say something about preferring a DSL at some point in his life??
Hey Leon you get to try the newer DSL100HR’s yet? Just grabbed one a great price and gotta say I am very impressed. More rounded sounding, the highs were tamed. Has the old DSL feel to it. Curious to see what you think when you get to try it out.
Excellent video Leon Todd! A question: I´m thinking to buy a DSL but waht to know your comments about the differences between dsl50 and dsl100? I know that dsl100 is a bit louder, but what about the balls, bottom end, and then the clean channel? Many thanks!

The only way i can get nice distortion sound is to use with maxon od-9 on clean channel or few overdrive on od channel with maxon od-9...

You did an amazing job! Really like the Lead 12 and the DSL. I am really curious about how similar in sound and feel are the JMP 2203 ('76-'80), JCM 800 and the green channel on the DSL.

Btw dude. What do you think of the new DSL's? How do you think they compare to the originals? I've played through the DSL40C and my friend has the 100H and sounds awesome. That said I've played the DSL401 and that was a really good combo. The 2018 DSL update with the Dual Master Volumes looks great too.
I've used a DSL100H as a backline amp a few times on tour and I liked it; the depth controls makes more sense than the deep switch IMO. Dual masters is really cool too!

For some reason i always assumed that Marshall was an American company. It just seemed to fit into my mental image of classic Americana along with Fender guitars, Harley Davidsons, and Cadillacs. I guess that's a big one for the Brits.

Try the DSL green channel with the bass on 0 and the mids/treble on 10. Definitely gives off a Plexi vibe.
I got the DSL100H and DSL20CR with a V30 inside. in this comparison I like the jcm2000 100 and 50

what is your idea about jcm2000 tsl 602 combo with wolverline celestion speakers? Is this good as well as "jcm 2000 tsl100 head" ??
TSL 602 is great just change the speakers.I ve replaced mine with Vintage 30s made in Engalnd and i have great tone even though i m still thinking that if i find another pair of tubes i ll manage to have better tone.
If you live in a world where volume isn't an issue, and you can crank all these. Since the cathode follower, tone stacks, Schmidt splitter, and the rest of the power amps are virtually identical, they're all going to sound similar the variations are in the preamp voicings. keeping the gain lower and the volume up is what's going to give you the ability to make that TSL 100 sound like a 1959. And that's a fact.
