I think he felt close to god at one time meaning he was there a long ago and was familiar but now he feels disconnected to what he use to feel like and longs to be back to that place he was in at the time.

Great reaction, made me want to analyze the song a little to, I take it as the guy saying, this is a old man, wondering about afterlife, and what it could be like, he is longing for someone, and also lost a lot of friends, he also want to get the answer of what afterlife could be, but he cant ever solve that puzzle, and thats why he wait patiently like a stone, he cant get the answer, untill he die.. i might be totally of track, just what i get..
