    Beloit Memorial High School Jazz Band I
    Friday, May 8, 2015
    Duke Ellington’s music is at the very heart of America’s 20th-century musical heritage and the core of the rich canon of jazz music. Jazz at Lincoln Center, committed to instilling a broader understanding of this music, created the Essentially Ellington program (EE) during the 1995-96 school year to make Ellington’s music accessible to as many high school musicians as possible and to support the development of their schools’ music programs.

    2:10 when she bends her knees and one of her fellow players is like “yeah girl yeah!” Truly shows the power of jazz and how amazing of a genre of music it really is :)

    Way back in the day when this music was first played, those guys were about this same age. It can still be done given a chance.

    These kids are musical 'reincarnates'
    of Duke Ellington's members.
    The damsel captures the essence of tone, articulation, melodic sweetness and improvisational acumen of Johnny Hodges on alto saxophone.
    The trumpeter is older than he is old: Edison, King Oliver, Louis... are heard in his playing.
    Good Job!
    Thanks for posting!

    Were they were using toilet plungers as mutes?

    • @theghattlings8995
      @theghattlings8995 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They arent mutes, they are simply just- plungers! They’re used by nearly every trumpeter and trombone player in the business! Its used to get that “wa” sound. Sometimes, a mute will be in an instrument while using the plunger!

  • @idkfret
    @idkfret 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    was the solo in the very beginning written or improvised?

    • @roosterslime9430
      @roosterslime9430 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it was improvised. The written version is a bit more simple.

    • @idkfret
      @idkfret 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What part do you believe is improvised? Like the pitch bending? Rearticulating? Glisses? All of the above perhaps lol

    • @roosterslime9430
      @roosterslime9430 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What you said and notes in general are improvised. If you want to hear the more simple version of the solo, you can watch sun prairie's or Newark academy's performance.

    • @Acorparation

      speaking on behalf of eminem fans everywhere, eminem and duke are geniuses of their respective genres. Neither genre is more tasteful than the other, with each requiring a unique set of skills. I think these kids sound amazing, but also think that eminem is insanely skilled and deserves respect from artists from all genres. Have you checked out his track "biterphobia"? Dude swings like bird on mango mangue imo.
