Are CDA, C-CDA, and CCD the same thing?

  • When it comes to clinical document exchange there are a few acronyms that can easily lead to confusion in a conversation. In this video I'll provide a non-technical overview of how Clinical Document Architecture (CDA), Consolidated-CDA (C-CDA), and Continuity of Care Document (CCD) relate to one another.

    So to analogize this to another context I'm more familiar with, it's kind of like the following in HL7 2.x
    CDA is HL7 2, the broad universal structure that defines the global format. How a message is defined starts and ends, how you break a message into segment, segments into fields, fields into components, etc.
    C-CDA is ADT, definitions of specific message types, with listings of what segments/fields/etc are required or optional with those defined messages.
    CCD is ADT-A01, a specific definition of a specific message, along with it's defined context, use, and meaning to receiving systems.
    Obviously it's not an exact analogy, but kinda like that, it seems.
