    You don't need to change polarity with 220 vs 120; both use the same polarity. If you change polarity to DCEP from DCEN while flux-core welding, you'll get more spatter; doesn't matter what voltage you use.

  • @AK74Man87
    @AK74Man87 5 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    I think you should of kept the polarity the same as when you had it on 110. Only time you should of changed it is if you switch from Flux core to solid core. Changing between voltage does not require polarity change, it might of welded better. Could be wrong of course.

    Fluxcore compared to shielded gas is like comparing off road tires vs street slicks. They serve different purposes. do the comparison outside in 15 mph wind.. fluxcore wins regardless of which machine you use. So the first part of the video is more about the wire not the machines. Js and I'm not a professional welder. Use the same wire in both machines and then this video makes more since. Your comparison is almost apples to oranges here.

    • @melgross
      @melgross 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chase Barrett I do agree they should have equipped the machines equally. Either flux core or MiG. This comparison isn’t really as useful as it could have been. If the purpose was to show the difference between flux and MiG, then the same machine should have been used.

    Just a tip for you Justin flux core should be DCEN no matter what the voltage is,, if using dual shield Flux core then polarity is the same as using
    mig (DCEP) as they both use gas. DCEN should give you less splatter with flux core. One day you will move up the line to a better welder than what HF sells.

    If you were going to compare a Harbor Freight welder to the Miller 211, you should have went with the Vulcan Omnipro 220 multiprocessor or even the Titanium 200 multiprocessor. That would have been a better match up.
    Personally, I own both the Vulcan 220 and the Titanium 170 (amongst other welders---primarily Lincoln), but the Vulcan 220 would be a closer match as the Vulcan automatically sets its own settings after you input wire diameter and metal thickness. You can still tweak from the programmed settings, but nonetheless I bet it would be a closer match up.

    I have this same welder because I got it last Sunday, and have been trying out the inductance setting. The knob on the right is the output inductance knob. Inductance controls weld puddle wetting area and arc time, which both affect penetration. High inductance increases the individual arc cycle time, improving the weld puddle wetting.
    Low inductance increases the frequency of each short circuit/arc cycle, used for a narrow bead in some joints. High inductance is good on thicker metals where good wetting at the weld's toes is needed. Low inductance works better for thin metal. If you have thin steel (18ga to 1/8"), it works best on 0-3. Thicker steel and rusty steel is better on 5-10. I've welded 3/32 wire successfully with no burn-through by setting the inductance to 0, amps to 13, and wire speed 120. This does way better for controlling welding than my cheap $285 Amazon 250amp welder did.

    The weld splater can be reduce by adjusting the voltage. When voltage is to high you will have more weld splatter. I was a high pressure pipeline welder quilified to API 1104, ASME Section 9 pressure vessel code and ASME strutural Welding codes in Arc welding, Gas Metal arc welding, and Flux core.
    When Linchon started developing fluxcore I help them setting pipeline welding procedures with flux core in the feild. The first flux core wire would jump from side to side making it difficult to weld. They made some changes to the chemical make up. We completed the procedure and I became certified for welding high pressure gas pipelines with flux core.

    I got the 170 titanium installed mustang 2 front suspension on my 1938 Chevy coupe using flux core did a beautiful job and made a spade to bury underground cable welded 1/2" steel to a 3/4" thick receiver hit a tree root and the receiver broke not the weld this thing really burns ....I've been welding auto body since 1973 with all kinds of welders this thing rocks haven't had it turned up to the max yet...best at 240 and110 good for light stuff duty cycle is Short on 110 doing thicker stuff.

    Been thinking about getting a welder for a beginner. Know very little about welding but want to learn. I may try to find a class nearby. Thanks for the video.

      Snap Mac Thanks Brother Tony. I wish I had the time to go to a welding class or 2 just to improve, but I suppose a mixture of Hard Knox University and You Tube Community College will have to do. 😂😂😂👍

    Great video thanks brother. Like that you had your dad in the video. I like his setup that Miller is a great welder. The welder you have you will get better the more you use it and twick it. Keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks again brother.

    You should redo the video with the polarity corrected on the Titanium.

    If you are trying to compare 2 different Mig welders, you have to use gas on both or your comparing apples to oranges.

    Switching from 120 to 240... it seems as though "plug it into a different outlet" should be part of the process? Thinking about buying one of the 170's, I don't do a lot of welding, but usually when I do it's on something big.

    Yeah you definitely don't use straight polarity with flux core wire you needed to keep the ground positive no matter what voltage you use input

    Cool stuff, gonna sub yer dad. I'm a Lincoln guy but not really for a "good" reason. I worked with only Miller in school and a variety of oxy/acetylene stuff. First time I saw a Lincoln Electric was in a custom bike shop and LOVED the "Lincoln Red" color scheme, welding wise it seemed equal to if not better than Miller and I never looked back. Just got me a multi-process Lincoln and she's a beauty. I have been looking at the Harbor Freight stuff to cover 1 or 2 processes my Lincoln doesn't cover because the HF ones do seem higher quality than they used to be and I won't be spending a bunch of money on 1 or 2 processes I only need on a few occasions. Cool video and thanks

    Just a thought. Perhaps You need to re do this video and get the welders output polarity correct for the type of wire your using. P.S. I weld proffesionaly.

      @@JustinDowDIYcentralhighway Justin. It's not the hard way, were just trying to assist. Put a little gap between the metals also, or bevel the edges some. Full penetration = better weld.

    The night and day is the difference between flux core and inert gas shielded. Not so much the difference in machines. This is an apples to oranges comparison and therefore not very useful. Also flux core is always DCEN where as MIG is always DCEP.

    That 2T 4T is if you put on 4T pull trigger and it keeps going until you pull trigger again and it shuts off.
    For long continuous welds you don’t have to hold trigger in.
    Try hooking up your dads gas.
    Does he use 80/20 -75/25 ?

    Just a suggestion. This didn't really show much as the swap over was wrong on the Vulcan and two different processes being used. Let's do them the exact same way now that you've got a little more experience. Nobody starts as a pro though. Always something to learn.

  • @BrockJaden
    @BrockJaden 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok I'm confused what are you trying to compare? titanium to miller, or mig with gas and flux core? Because your description suggests it's a comparison between rigs...yet your test isn't valid for that AT ALL...

    Your right you are NOT a welder!!! at 5:12 you switch polarity on machine for no reason. Flux core is electrode negative. NO MATTER WHAT MACHINE VOLTAGE IS!!!. That's why on 240 volt your welder looked like crap and splatter everywhere. There nothing wrong with the Vulcan or Titanium brand for the dollar. I have Miller 211autoset, Lincoln Weldpak 100 HD and a Vulcan Omnipro 220. I am selling the Miller due to the fact I can get another multiprocess machine for half the price of miller or lincoln.

      @brandonthomas9632 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right and you can’t compare the Miller unless it can also uses flux wire dummy. Mig is mig. Put ⛽️ gas on the titanium. And set the machine properly 😶 Leave it to the pros or go to school stop teaching people wrong

    love your channel friend but this was not any kind of test. You had the polarity wrong on 220 and you never used both machines doing the same kind of welds. To make it fair. Fix the polarity, flux core with the miller, then gas weld with both welders and use the same wire. That would be a test set we would like to see. :-)
