      If the welder works for you and you are able to weld what you want to then it is a good welder for you. One thing that I have seen in lower price welders is that they tend to have a lower duty cycle, for example 20% at max amperage vs 40% for a higher priced commercial welder of the same nominal amp rating. Another is that the lower cost welders may not actually be putting out the set amperage level. The duty cycle is important as it affects productivity. If you find out in your work that the machine is regularly shutting down because of duty cycle limitations, you need to move up to a higher capacity welder. I liked your presentation and I thought that it was very good.
      PS: You are absolutely right about customer service. I recently purchased a Square Wave TIG 200 from Lincoln. I set it up and was checking it out. There was a problem with the gas regulator holding the set point. It would drift up and down while I was welding. I contacted Lincoln through the chat on their website. After verifying the serial number on my machine, the first question from the service rep was "What is your shipping address?".

    I got to use these for almost a year doing sanitary stainless process piping for breweries. We NEVER had a problem with them, and we were using them for commercial work!
    I was beyond surprised but the quality $800 can buy you.
    In my opinion, dollar for dollar.. this is the best deal on the market.

    You did a great job explaining this unit. I’m a welder and it’s nice to see these other big guys get some competition! And finally the prices are beginning to come down with some better equipment and tools being developed. Again thank you for your video and time.

    DONT SPRAY ANTI SPATTER WHERE YOU ARE WELDING! It contaminates the weld. A good thing to try is marking out where you are welding, then cover it and spray anti spatter outside of the area to be welded. What I do for T joints is grab a piece of blue painter's tape put it in the joint half on each side and then spray it down, remove the tape and weld it. Also push dont drag with solid wire.

    • @53prime
      @53prime 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dragging with solid wire produces better penetration because you're hammering wire into the base metal. If you push your short occurs on the puddle and only the latent heat fuses to the base metal. Unless you're going uphill or have huge root openings, you should pull.

    • @paulkurilecz4209
      @paulkurilecz4209 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ummm, don't spray anti-spatter on the weld bevel. When I have to use anti-spatter because of cosmetic reasons, I will shield the weld bevel area and about a 1/4" or so outside of the weld bevel area when I spray the anti-spatter.

    • @paulkurilecz4209
      @paulkurilecz4209 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@53prime With MIG, there isn't much of a push or pull angle, your gun should be within 10 degrees of perpendicular* to the weld bevel. I tend to push for several reasons, one is so that the shielding gas flow is in the direction of travel and two, so that I can see the puddle. At least that is the way I learned it and practiced it.
      * for butt welds, for inside and outside corner welds the angle should be split between the two plates forming the angle.

    I went ahead an bought the welder a few weeks ago for my hobby shop. I'm not a very experience welder, but I can do what I need to do. My previous welder was the HF Flux Core...very weak, but it sufficed for small things. First thing I noticed is that it lays down flux-core like butter, even on 120. Running 6018 stick is also no problem. I haven't run in it MIG yet (no gas), but I'm looking forward to getting that set up in the near future. Don't know if I'll ever run tig. My son is certified, and was very impressed with the quality, especially for the price. If you're a hobby guy like myself, I see no reason why this setup won't work for you.

    I was considering a vulcan, however, in the shops I worked in have had millers. So even though my Miller 220 AC/DC was three times the cost. I got better accessories, repair shops everywhere if needed, available parts. I just bit the bullet and went blue. Now the Omni Pero is really like the cheaper Miller 215 that is about $700 more. I say if you are investing just go with them Miller. I never regretted it.

    Its a decent welder. Its not as efficient as the esab, miller, lincoln as it uses more amps, but it welds just as good. If you got the money to swing it buy it!. Get the extended warranty when you buy it.. Or dont buy it. That warranty alone is worth all that 100$ extra. Dont be dumb. Hf has the absolute best warranty conditions ever. They ask no questions...they simply radio the back. And in 5 minutes youre back on the road. You cant beat that kinda customer service

    I bought this welder and have had good luck so far. I buy a lot of tools from there. Some are junk and some are well worth the money. One thing I will say about the harbor freight warranty is you can even bring it back and just swap it out for a new one, one day before the warranty is up. No one really knows anything about welders there but I think for under $1000 for the home gamer this is a great deal.

    I really like your channel! I just subscribed! As for going up against Miller and Lincoln because they have old tombstone welders that are still going strong after decades of use, that's an unfair comparison, because those are old, heavy transformer based machines that are rock solid, amp hogs and heavy. All these new welders are inverter welders. pure electronics! fast switching IGBT transistors doing the work. Electronics can break and they do. Even with Miller, Lincoln, and Hobart. You can pull up all sorts of warranty issues on line that are half asses honored, or not honored by Miller, Lincoln, and Hobart.Thanks again for your channel!

    Good video, and good discussion. I agree with others, it’s the new Craftsman. They now have enough of a footprint to where they can just swap units. Troubleshooting and shipping repair parts is now more expensive and complicated than just getting a new one. I guess they take those units, fix the problem, and probably just sell them as refurbs....or perhaps reuse parts?

    OK, Harbor Freight now only has a 90 day warranty on the Vulcan, not one year like they did when I purchased mine. My unit is 2 yrs old and sucked some metal dust into the rear fan. Blew up 2 power transistors. Call to HF revealed that there are no internal parts available and they don't have any idea where I could take it for repairs. So it is a $1K doorstop unless I tear it apart and see what I can do. I happen to have some expert help with my brother the E engineer so we got it apart and pulled the 2 blown transistors, luckily got the numbers off and ordered new ones from Digikey. Today will install them and see if the repair worked, but I am pretty confident. I'd ask you if yours was out of warranty and the gas solinoid failed, what would you do? Doorstop?

      This welder is probably a good choice for you, with the ability to run different processes and voltages. If you are outside, you can run stick or flux core; if you are inside, you can use MIG or TIG. For most jobs, the duty cycle should not be an issue, even at 110V.

    Good review, but please don’t say flux core isn’t mig, it is but it’s used in different applications, like take your welder outside with a little bit of wind and try welding with solid core wire or on rusty dirty equipment. I can as long as I mig with flux core. Both produce a shielding gas, it’s just in the way they do it is the only difference. Again good review.

    Hello Merrick, i have the 215 from vulcan, i bought it at hf, on dsale, as is type of purchase, the parts were not there, but the one thing i have fopind in your case, is that if you are under warranty you can just go and exchange the unit in stead of trying ti fix it, with the other boys you have to send it to be serviced and could set you back days and even weeks, my case with milwauke tools, and got them back just to have them brake again within a week, hf, yes it may be a hassle to go and replace but you can have it the same day, i guess is safe to say is cheaper than sending the other units in for repair, hope it helps, keep up the good work, love your show....

    I've been using the HF 90 amp for a while now, does a fair job but I have limitations with the circuit in my garage. WFS over 5 pops my breaker with 030 wire. With a 20% duty cycle it's hard to get much welding done. However, most inverter type welders regardless of cost have a 20-30% duty cycle for sometimes 5 to 10 times the cost. So just get the HF welder and if anyone gives you any shit, just smack them in the face with the 500 bucks you saved.

      Merricks Garage looks like the “titanium” is the pro grade where as the “Vulcan” is industrial grade. But the Vulcans have price hiked by about 150$ so I figured I’d try the titanium while it’s cheap. Looks like a little less amperage but same wire drive. I’ll test when I can

    • @damondiehl5637

      The Titanium has a cheaper MIG Gun. The Titanium has smaller and probably cheaper connectors, and to use 110V you add an adapter onto the end of the 220V plug, whereas the OmniPro has a completely separate power cord. The Titanium comes with the TIG gun, the OmniPro does not. The OmniPro's LCD screen is more user friendly.

  • @neilfriendly231
    @neilfriendly231 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Honestly the review hit the points that really matter. My shop just got an esab 235 mp but blew up on us more than likely user error but had it less than a week, so we'll see what esab says. Theyll probably replace it but for $2300, If they wont thats enough for 2 vulcans and materials. But esab is a heavy hitter in the industry. 900 for a vulcan and if it blows up, thats the problem. We know it can mig. But what's the tig and stick like. Im not buying it soley for mig. Mor often than not i want stick for away from home and tig for stainless and small welds. Mig for easy weldin. Good video, weird drift on the camera angles tho lol.

And about your gas issue it sounded definitely like a solenoid it happens in all of them. But from what I’ve seen on this machine well worth the money considering the competition is about twice as much. Also some of Miller’s new stuff is way over priced IMO I use them everyday.

    The heat signs of penetration arer okay but don't look as good as they should. Also you welds look very prominent like they are on top and not really penetrating that great. They do look good enough but are really standing proud or tall. Turn up the heat and dope down I think. I'm also not a pro. But do have a good but of experience. I myself stick. My welds aren't spectacular but one thing for sure is they penetrate. Work stick one worry is that you'll burn thru. So there learning curve is higher. And production much slower. My 2 cents.

    Thanks for the video, I have really been looking forward to it. Couple of questions - once you traded the unit out, were you able to use the solid core wire or did you just stick with the flux core? How much time did you get to spend using the gas before the failure?.
    I recently spoke with a Harbor Freight employee and she stated that there is no designated customer support. As a matter of fact, some of the things she stated were disturbing to say the least. After speaking with her, I was able to speak with two others (one presently employeed and one prior employee) who did say pretty much the same thing. To splatter means to scatter large particles of a substance. A splatter is the pattern of drops that result from splattering. Are you a precise person? So, go pay twice as much for a machine that are built to last basically the same time frame.
