    Good video.
    A tip: When switching the wire, instead of cutting it by the drive roller, cut the tip of the wire at the end of the MIG gun. Then release the drive roller tension, and wind the roll backward with your hand to wind up the wire from the gun. This way you save the extra 6-10 ft of wire.

      TheLyricalRAP with an 11 pound spool,if you change very occasionally, it might be ok. But with a 2 pound spool, and frequent changeovers, it’s amazing how much wire you’ll be throwing away.

    • @JollyRogerHobbies
      @JollyRogerHobbies 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@melgross Yes for sure, you're right!! even with a 44 lb spools I think its worth it to save a little bit. It takes me almost no time to roll back the spool anyhow 👍🏼
      As you said, especially on the smaller spool sizes, like 2 lb.

    Polarity don't worry about that I been welding 35 years and knew to switch over polarity. I bought a new Vulcan 215 ran the first week with flux then got my tank the following weekend. Switched over to gas. Started to weld and took me a minute or two to figure out why the welder was running like crap. THEN IT DAWN ON ME. I FORGOT TO SWITCH POLARITY.
    Guess I was in a hurry to try out the gas on my new Vulcan.
    When changing wire rolls just undo the wire feed rollers. Then you can roll the wire back on the roll to save wire. Just back out your regulator knob to purge your regulator.
    Thanks Justin for your videos always looking forward to seeing the new video. When is your next live stream with a beer love having a beer with you on live stream.

    Instead of paying attention to the numbers on the dial pay attention to the display... A good rule of thumb is try and start off square... 21.0 volts start with 210 wire speed and them adjust from there to your liking.. Also try pushing your puddle instead of pulling.. Your beads aren't really penetrating into the metal and I could see some porosity in the end of the first bead... All you have todo is turn the bottle off when your done there is no real need to purge the lines after welding. Keep practicing I am sure you'll get good at it and thanks for the vids I really do enjoy watching them and look forward to seeing you get progress and show what that welder can do!

    To save the wire cut off the little ball at gun nozzle and then rewind wire back on the spool while keeping the wire pull tight. Saves a lot of wire when changing wire types.

    Use a push ditection instead of a drag motion it may harder to see the puddle but it worked better for me. Mig is different than stick. Also it seems that the wire should be about .023 solid core with gas for 1/8 or less steel. Great video your dad is a great guy with a wealth of knowledge.

    @7:40 Don't loosen the tensioner, just flip it down towards you. This is a time saver so you don't have mess with it when you run out of wire. It's good for going from solid core to solid core, or flux to flux. When going from One to the Other though, it's a good idea to calibrate it.

    Great choice switching to gas, you’ll definitely love it much better. If that smaller tank ends up depleting to quickly for you, I would switch to an 80 cubic foot size. It would be perfect for those that don’t weld a lot but it’s cheaper in the long run. I had an 80 then I did too much welding for the size I went to I believe a 140 size. It’s nice with my local gas company because to switch sizes you just have to pay the difference. Also you buy the tank somewhat but you don’t own it, so you can keep it until it is out. No monthly or yearly payments, just pay to refill.

  • @Bobensen
    @Bobensen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    When you closed the bottle, you actually opened it all the way, that's why the pressure was not dropping. Normally when the bottle is closed, you can relieve the pressure with a few seconds of holding the trigger.

    • @JustinDowDIYcentralhighway
      @JustinDowDIYcentralhighway  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup that was my bad. I caught that this morning. Thanks for letting me know otherwise. Cheers!

  • @MichaelRoachWV
    @MichaelRoachWV 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @32:00 You don't have to, and shouldn't want to clear the gas from the line. Essentially, this would just throw away double the volume of the line. If you cleared it, you then would have to refill it the next time you opened the bottle. It's a closed system.
    Leave your diaphragm or regulator settings alone, just turn off the bottle.
    You'll get in the habit of turning gas on, turning welder on. Then after your session, you turn the gas off and welder off together.
    To compensate for changes in the actual amount of gas flowing, whenever I go to weld, I turn the gas and welder on and do a short pull on the trigger and watch my regulator in case it needs adjusted.

      I don’t recommend pure Co2. There are a few areas where it’s useful, but not really. It’s mostly used because it’s the cheapest gas you can get. If you go to wire manufacturers sites and look up the properties of their wires, you’ll see that where they even list Co2 as an acceptable gas, the welds are weaker using it. 75/25 is better, and somewhere around 85/15 to 92/8 is too, and you can spray with that for thicker material.

    On high pressure gas cylinders, such as oxygen and argon, you need to open the valve all the way. They have a seat at the bottom (close) and at the top, because the high pressure gas can otherwise leak around the valve shaft.

    I enjoy your videos just want to point a couple things out the direction you turned the valve on the gas would fully open on my tank and the way you purged the lines works on my Klutch welder from Northern tool one other thing you may want to loosen the wing nut pressure on the wire spool it could cause your wire feed motor to burn up from working to hard it should only be tight enough to keep it from backlashing.

    A little tip.... Flux core wire you should weld Pull to avoid slag inclusions in your weld pool... Gas you should really practice Push, since you have no flux to worry about putting inclusions in your weld you can push or pull GMAW, most prefer Push style MiG welding because it does offer a much prettier weld and the weld pool is much easier to control.... also you are oscillating too much And the puddle is building up high in the center, you need to speed up your feed with your hand (moving down the part faster) try practicing small circles or Lower case cursive E’s..... also as Richv said make sure the drive rolls are correct, and after you change the drive rolls it looks like you need to correct the tension, I could see the wire curling as it was coming out of the tip.... there should only be enough tension on the rolls that if you hold your finger at the end of gun and squeeze the trigger your finger should be able to stop the wire.
    Your on the right track man, just keep burning, I know you said you don’t want to be a pro, but these simple tips will help you be consistent and have a little more fun with getting strong and prettier welds!

    Justin is always try and plug directly into a receptacle and not use an extension cord also a popular saying is if there’s slag ya drag but it’s ain’t required. I like pushing hard wire and mig is picky af it doesn’t even like mill scale. About the ground in my opinion I don’t think it makes as much as having a clean connection. I’d also invest in a flow meter.

  • @ww321

    I believe that's called teflon tape. Plumbers tape is galvanized sheet metal roll with holes in it made for hanging pipe etc. Also when changing wire in your mig. clip the wire at the gun , release tension off the drive rollers and back roll the wire onto the spool to keep from wasting wire every time you change. :)

    You don't have to waste that much wire. Just flip up the drive roller, trim the wire on the end of the MIG gun, and roll the wire back in, turning the wire roll clockwise. You'll save about 9-10ft of wire.

    I have a question... When you Titanium Mig 170 is plugged into 120 and you turn the power on, does it come on then cycle off and then back on by it's self? ....and if so, does it do the same thing on 240? Checking because I purchased on this month, and I am currently plugged into 120 and when I turn it on, it turns on, then cycles off and back on by it's self and then stays on after it does that. I was wondering if that is something to do with the voltage input. Thank you.

  • @gunchief0811
    @gunchief0811 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    When there's slag you drag.. otherwise push the weld.. and try doing cursive "e". Technique watch your puddle, and don't go to fast... Usually the problem is too fast.. but keep your eye on the paddle. And go slow and steady. Ur welds will get better penetration. And bond the material with what u want which is taking two pieces of metal and making them as one.. the heat transfer is the main thing. That gets the metals to meld together as a solid piece.

I really like Lincoln electrodes both stick rods and wire! they make some good stuff! check out welding tips and tricks videos on youtube he makes some great welding videos! Cheers!

  • @jamessonger3
    @jamessonger3 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, thats great you started using shielding gas.... I would choose to use solid wire over flux core 110% of the time.... Only flux core i like is dual shield but thats for another day! One last thing you wanna make sure your drive roll is on the right groove for the wire your running. and when setting up a new roll of wire I like to put it in the welder and set that tension that will let the spool of wire spin freely without letting it keep spinning when you let off the trigger. then set your tension on the wire itself.
    Keep up the good work! it will only get better my dude!

    Hey dude,seems to me that if you were opening the valve when you thought you were closing it,that there would be no gas when you were welding? Which would explain the not so smooth welds,plus seemed like they built up to much,it just didn’t have that certain crackling sound I’m use to hearing when doing mig, I’m not a professional welder but have used one in the shop before,& just the welds are smoother with the gas,just saying,keep practicing I’m sure you will iron it out.

      I just got started with welding, and I have the CE MIG 170, which is similar. They'll run on Flux Core wire without gas, or Solid Core wire with gas. If you look up "flux core welding tips" there's some good vids here on YT showing you how. Welds are prettier WITH gas, but you can do servicable welds without gas with the flux core wire. And you can weld flux core outdoors because you dont have to worry about the gas blowing away.

      I run mine on a 15amp breaker and use .030 Licoln Super Arc

    • @miloaustin1404
      @miloaustin1404 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You absolutely should NOT run this welder on a 15 amp circuit, even if 230V, just because you can get away with it. For 230V, it requires a 30 amp breaker and 10 ga. wire. For 120V, a 20 amp breaker and 12 ga. wire minimum must be used, and be sure to use a 20-amp rated outlet. Most common 120V outlets are only 15 amp. You can tell the difference because on the 15 amp, the ground lug (left one) is straight, and the 20 amp is a sideways "T" for the special 20 amp plug. A 15 amp plug will fit a 20 amp outlet, but not the other way around.
      As someone previously mentioned about not knowing how to turn off a tank valve, if you do not know how to properly provide electrical service for this welder, not only should you not be welding, you especially should NOT be providing advice about it. You now have TWO strikes against you. How are we supposed to believe anything you say?

    • @Patriot_Drone_Services
      @Patriot_Drone_Services 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Milo - You have some valid points, but you suck at getting them across. He is learning how to weld, and stated this fact. Not everyone has a firm knowledge base. We all started somewhere, not everyone was blessed with 30 years of welding and electrical experience straight outta the womb. Now, it’s up to you sport, but you might wanna try and adjust your method of making observations and not come across like to total dick for everyone to read. Try coaching and helping a rookie, it goes a long way for everyone trying to watch and learn. You ever notice there are those people who criticize everything, and be a negative asshat when commenting on other folks videos? If you haven’t noticed, its because you are one of those people.

    You don't do circles with mig. Crank up the amp or slow down the speed.

      The gas psi does not effect the weld looks. It's a shield only. I would run 10-15 psi unless in a area where wind can blow the shield away. Only crank up psi when wind is an issue. Co2 and argo are inert. No purge necessary.

    Keep practicing, slow down your eeee's and slow down your travel speed; you'll do fine. The power drawer collaboration is coming hopefully tomorrow, my schedule has been a dumpster fire full of dirty diapers this week. Cheers

    I dont think your mig gun is useing any gas it was not looking correct in your vid i have bought one also a 170 mig it worked one time and stopped so i took it back i think theirs something in the machine think its the silonoid on mine wasnt ever opening the gas i pull my lines and got gas even blew air thew the whip and we had flow just wasnt getting gas pass the solenoid inside the machine no matter what i tryed mine operatated good twice i could hear gas every time i pushed the gun and then stopped should hear gas if u bump the trigger weather ur welding or not and seeing how your welds look dirty makes me think its doing like mine did it should weld like good and clean seeing ur welds look like flux core i am like 90 percent ur welding with no gas might should try and return it for another one also thats what im doing as soon as they open back up after holidays over and most people also set their gas pressure with the gun pushed cause it will drop alittle when its flowing gas so if u set at 20 with it just setting their during a weld u might only get 15 just another thought i had from the vid

    MiG welding is into the weld not away from it. MiG welding is different from stick welding.

  • @joelschermerhorn5447
    @joelschermerhorn5447 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your amps are too low and the impedance knob needs to be turned up, because the gas cools the welding process. The weld was balled up, indicating that there was not enough heat for the weld, that the wire speed was too fast, or that you were traveling too fast with the MIG gun.

    How to say a lot of mistakes you've been making you should not stand in front of the tank when you turn them on especially the regulator

    For you to have an instructional video, you go about things in backwards fashion. Not good for the beginning welders.

      It’s kind of funny watching this. Look, I love the guy, and when he talking about auto mechanics, he really knows what he’s talking about. But he doesn’t know what he’s talking about when talking about welding, but he talks as though he’s an authority. Truth is, his father is no great expert either, from what I see.

    Never ever use anything on connections on regulators. Those 580 connections are designed to be gas tight. Any fitting that has a rotating nut with a stationary center with a rounded head must never be used with any tape or plumbers gunk. The problem is that a bit of that will come off the threads and get into the line, possibly the regulator itself if it’s the connector from the tank. Normally, with compressed air, that’s not a problem if you have a filter ahead of the regulator.
    Don’t overtighten. Tighten just enough to stop leaks. Overtightening can damage the fittings and make it impossible to get a tight connection.
    By the way, it’s not “easier” to feed the wire with the tip off, you must feed the wire with the tip off, and keep the torch cable fairly straight when you do it so the end of the wire doesn’t catch in the spring liner when going through. Did you change the feed roll from flux core serrated to MiG wire smooth? You need to. It’s interesting to watch you close the valve as you say you’re opening it. You close the valve ON THE TANK to close the gas off, and clockwise is close on all valves, and counterclockwise is open. You don’t have to purge after your done. You’ll be purging anyway when you start up. Come on Justin, you’re a mechanic, you should know this. You don’t need that flow adapter. If you want a real flow regulator, then buy one.
    That first MiG weld was not very good. You had too much undercut at the edges. The weld was too high in the middle. You have to learn that the gun needs to be 3/8” from the metal, and at most 1/2”. You snip the wire to 3/8 before welding, if its too long, and advance the wire out to 3/8 before you weld, if it’s too short. Buy a damn pair of MiG pliers and use it.
    Justin, you really need to learn about welding before making videos about it.

    Your wire stick out before you strike the arc is too long. You want it out about 3/8ths of an inch.

    You should just snip the wire coming out of your gun then just twist your spool to wind the wire back onto your spool you don’t waste all of that wire

    Sorry but you should not have done it outside should have done it inside and when your doing it outside with the wind blowing it misses up your weld and instead of cutting the wire cut it at the handle and pull it back so you dont loose wire
