  • This California Zephyr #5 arrived in Fort Morgan at 1232 MDT (6 Hrs. & 44 Min. late due to a derailment in Illinois yesterday. The Zephyr had P42s #198 & #170 providing the power to the 8-car consist.
The headlight can be seem as they approach East Ft. Morgan CP where they are shunted onto the siding or "2 Track" for the run around of the work train.
The Zephyr stopped briefly at the Main St. crossing. There was no station work for #5 today and the high ball was given. The head end repeated and brought the Zephyr back up to 10 mph limit as it proceeded west and back onto the main line at west Ft. Morgan CP. Its next stop will be Union Station in Denver.
Thanks to the operating crew for the greetings.
Everyone please stay cool and safe!
This was the second time I have seen the Zephyr use the 2 Track in the time I have been covering the Zephyr station stops.
    Temp. 92 F. Feels like 99F.
Humidity jumped back up to 18%.

Good evening, Dan; Thank you for dropping by along with the comments.
It was different watching the Zephyr take the main again. Had I been forewarned; I would have positioned myself nearer to that turnout just to be a little closer to the action.
Oh well. Just to catch them on the 2 Track was something.
      Have a great evening.

Hey Hey Mr. Mike - Happy Thursday and thanks for the #5 coverage. Slow approach and slow depart with no passenger work @ FMG.
Now - Welcome to Beaumont Texas. Yup, our power is still out in Houston, secondary to Hurricane Beryl's arrival on Monday AM. We lost power approximately 0530 Hrs CDT on Monday. Keep in mind that temps were in the mid to high 90's with the heat index making them feel like 105ish F 🔥. We made it through Monday night and barely through Tuesday night, but my wife started having breathing problems due to the heat. Wednesday we gathered up the daughters, cats, dogs, picked up my mother-in-law and headed out. We checked in to a hotel about 1.5 hrs east of us, so as to be away from 2-hour lines waiting for gasoline (remember those? 😅. Hotels closer to home were either booked up or had no power. CenterPoint Energy is saying they hope to have our area of town's power by Sunday night. We're hoping to return home on Monday 🏡. No damage to our place. Just a large oak tree branch broke off and landed in the ground just in front of my truck, but appears no impact. Will keep you posted. Be safe my friend 👍
Okay Papa Geoff, let's highball on signal indication - Here we go on a clear - Clear block, thanks, OUT 🚦🚦

I will get around to answering one of these days. I hope by now that you have power back. I've been thru that while stationed in Cuba years ago. They would shut the power off as a precaution when a 'cane would roll by. At least the beer coolers stayed cool and the ice didn't melt too fast from the machines.
Anyway, stay cool and safe until you can return to the family housing. Very happy that all are ok. '
Best wishes on a safe return to normalcy.

Hi Mike, Long time no see. Now that the dog days have arrived with very high pollen count I'm not on the balcony much. Nice days I start my day there and end up there. Crocheting, listening to a book on cd, hushing Taffy when she wants to yell at the doggies going by. Speaking of Taffy, I had her DNA run. She is 59.8% Dashund, 23,0% Chihuahua, 11.1% Shih Tzu and 5.2% Poeranian. She looks like a full blooded long haired Doxie but you can see traits of the other breeds in her. I'm back with you while the pollen counts stay high and I have to stay inside. Have a good evening. Thanks for the Zephyr.

Good evening, Ginny; Thank you for tuning in as well as the comments. Nice to hear from you again. I do very much agree about the pollen count. It is still at the outrageous level here with the grass out here. And on top of that we have the triple digit heat setting in for a while. At least the humidity dropped back down. That is quite an ancestry that Taffy has. From what you have told me, she seems to be a very well-mannered Doxie.
I think the Zephyr is back on a usual schedule for tomorrow. That will be nice as the heat and I didn't get along this afternoon. Getting soft in my old age. LOL!
Anyway, have a great evening back there.
Please take care, stay cool, and safe!

You are most welcome, and I thank you for looking in along with the comments. I'll have to do a search for that video. I was able to do the stuff at the house while it was still semi-cool and still make both trains. Now I am sucking up the BTUs from the A/C system and a couple of fans just to move the air a bit. Good Thursday afternoon Mike! I do believe this is a first time I’ve ever seen any Amtrak come through Fort Morgan on the other track! No wonder you said to whoever was working the car “that this is rare”. Had to have a little fun! It’s just after 5:30 PM Iowa time. Have a great evening and restful night! We’ll see what Friday morning brings! Mark in Iowa.

The A/C has started to cycle meaning the heat has made it thru the walls. Feels good!
Have a great evening back there.

Yeah good afternoon Mike I guess sometimes they have to do their work. But thanks for explaining about putting the train on a siding and getting it around the work train. I didn't hear about any derailment but you know a lot about it you keep up on it a lot. And you know I appreciate your videos. Sounds like an early morning hours it can be cooler but it can ramp up pretty hot out there. Anyway I'm enjoying my summer off from working at the schools. Just laying around staying up a little later sleeping a little later. Just relaxing back here and taking it easy. I love it.

Mike, I saw that a coal train(?) derailment slowed #5 down, but I couldn’t find any news about what stopped the #6 for so long. Hope tomorrow it’s back to 5:46am for you!

Good afternoon, Maritasue; Thank you for tuning in and the comments. All I learned was from the main AMTRAK web site yesterday. They covered both train delays. The derailment/fatal strike in eastern Nevada was a UP manifest/vehicle strike. UP decided to send the rail traffic around the area as cleanup was to take a while. The passengers on #6 did get some rare milage.
I will check on tomorrows #5 in a few.

The westbound Zephyr appears to continue to have an "interesting" journey, today. Track 2, no less! While the chorus seems to have died down, it was interesting to note a couple of them flitting about, as #5 rolled back onto the main, heading to Denver. Hurry home and get out of the heat. Take care and stay safe. I'll stop by tomorrow.

I wondered about the work train as they had just received permission from the dispatcher for multiple moves to work the molasses cars into PMS Feeds. And permission to head back to Brush Center when done there. From what I could see in the sightseer/lounge car everyone seemed to be in good spirits. Lota of waves from there.
The A/C in the house hasn't cycled yet. It will later as the heat soaks into the walls. I did hit the water as I came in the house.
Time to check on tomorrows #5 and sit in front of a fan for a while.
Take care, stay cool, and safe down there!

I'd imagine they'd board and leave off passengers at the main street crossing, so there's no blocking track to deal with. That's what they sometimes do at La Plata.

The last time I saw the Zephyr on 2 Track it was -2 degrees F. and a stiff east wind. There was a passenger that detrained that morning and had a chilly walk to the waiting vehicle. Use that time was caused by a broken rail on the main.

The Zephyr crew made a "permissive stop" instead of an "absolute stop" on the siding. The signals all appear to be red.

    • @MikeJensen-jt9yr
      @MikeJensen-jt9yr  หลายเดือนก่อน

Unseen by the cam is Green over Red on the 2 Track signal mast. It was covered by the Zephyr as I pivoted to catch the consist diverging back onto the Main at west Ft. Morgan CP. Thus, the seemingly all red. The signal mast for the Main is correct in displaying all red even though activity was in progress to the east as the work train had verbal permission for multiple moves east of that CP.
A manifest was also shunted past the work train about 12 minutes after the Zephyr cleared Ft. Morgan. It also saw the same signal arrangement as it passed.
As to the difference in a "permissive" and the "absolute stop" No difference. OTHER than the Zephyr being on 2 Track. A station stop was made IAW AMTRAK guidance and procedural codes.
No matter. Have a great evening, Pete. Please take care, stay cool, and safe!

Good morning, Lindsay; Thanks for dialing in and the questions. Yes, there was a derailment between Mendota and Naperville as per the info from the AMTRAK mani web site. Both #3 & #5 were held at Chicago until the line was cleared of the coal train that went to ground. Meanwhile, #4 & #6 were married together at Galesburg and traveled as 1 on the Chillicothe sub around the scene and into Union Station in Chicago.
Both west bound trains were listed as 6 hours late departing CUS.
