This topic seriously hit home. After i won my first national title in volleyball i didn't had that kind of mind set that Thoorin was talking about or that drive to win. Even though we had several more chancen to take back our title as champions we always ended on somwhere from 2-6 place , and though everything was okei because we have won before. In all of the 12 national tournament i've played i've only won 2 of them. Kinda wish that i've seen this earlier.

This applies to almost any goal in life (without the "just" part). I think it helps greatly to have a strong reason (to you) to why you wanna win. So that whenever you wanna be comfortable you push yourself back. With time you wouldn't to refer to that reason anymore and you'd have formed a solid mindset that keeps you pushing forward.

Kobe has plenty of stories like that, his finger is fucked btw its completely twisted due to playing a full year and playoffs with it broken. I remember one game of his, it goes way back in the Shaq era, random season game in Chicago, they werent fighting for the playoffs or anything, and he had this shoulder injury where he couldn't shoot with his dominant right hand, and he not only played, but dropped like 38 and won the game... Some dude just have this surreal will to win, to a level where its almost unhealthy, but to me its amazing and I admire it.
What he says can be applied across the board in any professional discipline. Sentiment like "I just want to be paid more" or "I just want the job that I want" none of that will just fall into your lap through talent alone, sure it helps initially but if you don't round out your skills, sacrifice a little bit of a strength to improve a weakness you'll hit the same hurdles he talks about in this video. +1

Great Video man, really insightful and well presented. What I really like about it, is that you can also apply what you're saying in a normal life environment, not only esports or sports in general. This is a general mentality that you can see in every aspect of life, whether its work or family, etc...Succeeding in anything really, takes time and the right effort that one needs to put in order to reach his "trophy", and this takes dedication, commitment and resilience to accept failure and to always be able to adapt to anything that a situation throws at you. I think this is very much so the same for CLG (LoL), they just wanted to win. When they went to worlds and didn't perform, they did show that it's just that the stars aligned the correct way, for the season in NA, and not that they had fixed anything of value in their team.
If you do something for a living, your end goal should be "I wan't to be the best at what I do, because it's how I allow myself to live, buy food and things, pay my bills, I have to be good." If you perform in competitions for a living, no matter if its eSports or physical sports or fucking idk painting? your end goal should always be to win, because that's how you make your living. HOWEVER, you should never "settle" for being the best, and you should never tell yourself you're the best. That will be your downfall eventually. You have to always put in time, effort, practice, research, and as soon as you don't WANT to do that anymore, or CAN'T do that anymore, it's the end of your reign as one of the best (look at Sean Gares for example). Winning and being the best has to be your end goal, but in a sense you can't allow yourself to reach it, or else you'll be your own downfall.

They are people who either A) only want to win, B) only want to "have fun," C) don't want either...? or D) are trolls/griefers. Obviously D is self explanatory, but the others have a very clear dynamic. In case A, the person doesn't enjoy every round. If they don't enjoy the game, then the only reason they're here is to win. I honestly don't understand this... and yet you see it all the time. They're everywhere. They're the ones who scream at you when you fail a clutch despite the fact that they suck. In case B, the person doesn't care about the thrill of winning. The strategy means little to them, they just want to enjoy the game. That's what casual is for, yet they insist on ruining people's games in competitive. They often do stupid things that make you lose, for the reason that, "Games are just for fun!" Probably the most annoying person to come by. And then there's case C. Like, what the crap? Why are playing this game if you don't enjoy OR care about it? And yet here they are, playing CS. Very strange. They don't have fun and they don't care about the outcome, and all around this hurts your team's morale. Don't be one of these people. If you are A, you should find a game you enjoy. If you are B, you should just play a casual game. And if you are C, just... stop?

I always find it hilarious his apartment temperature is so cold he has to dress in winter gear when sitting at his desk. I still find his input and thoughts well thought out and I like his commentary and analysis but I hope one day he gets paid enough that he can turn that heater up.
I was really expecting a Kobe and Shaq example of playing with people you are not fond of for the greater good of the team allowing you to be in the best possible position to win.
I feel like the videos where you talk about the game are few and far between. Esports talk is fine, but I enjoy stuff like this way more. I feel like it's applicable to my own life. How should I think about the game and the practice, as a pleb who will never be more than mediocre at the game? These are the concepts that only a veteran like you could teach me.
That's a good question that I was thinking about throughout the video. I guess if your goal is to go pro it will be worth it, but if you want to be just good then you don't need to go ham.

That's not entirely true. Talent trumps hardwork at low and mid levels, but as it gets higher talent places less of a factor.

I feel like the videos where you talk about the game are few and far between. Esports talk is fine, but I enjoy stuff like this way more. I feel like it's applicable to my own life.

That's a good question that I was thinking about throughout the video. I guess if your goal is to go pro it will be worth it, but if you want to be just good then you don't need to go ham.
Bit out of left field Thorin, but you should check out Jocko Willink. Saw him on the Joe Rogan podcast, hes an ex marine who wrote a book about how to succeed and it sounds very similarly along the lines of what you said here.
Nobody is going to say after a loss well I'm okay with this and I could work harder but its just not worth it to me. I do agree that they don't mean they just want to win, but idk what they should say instead.
