Love Repeat When Necessary, definitely my favourite Dave Edmunds album.

I still play the Love Sculpture LPs, a50+ years later. When I hear I Hear You Knockin', I wanted to buy an album, but there was not one to buy. Two years later, the Rockpile LP came out (the Dave Edmunds LP, not the band), I thought it sounded different. He'd re-recorded it, and as musicians are wont to do, he changed it, slightly. I liked the album, and still have it, but it's a roots-rock collection, of uneven quality. I'd place Forms and Feelings above it, Blues Helping below, ranking them.
I bought Subtle as a Flying Mallet, but it suffers from the same problems as the first solo LP, roots-rock yadayadayada. In the meantime, one of my "friends" pinched my I Hear You Knockin' 45. I liked Get It better, and Trax on Wax 4 even more. That LP works as an album, beginning to end. Repeat When Necessary was about a half of a good album, half of less interesting noodling. Rockpile came out next, with Nick Lowe, a resounding disappointment. Nothing bad, just underwhelming, given the stellar group of musicians, but I've been around musicians most of my life, and it was nothing new.
Twangin' would be the last time I ponied up the price of an album by Dave Edmunds, for an almost-good record. DE 7th was more of the same, to me, poor song choice coupled with trad-rock arrangements. I barely gave Information any notice, and the albums that followed seemed to travel in the same ruts. From ToW4 to Information, he'd improved with each album, but the charts didn't reflected this. Dave's taste in music determined his approach, narrowing with each new release. He never made a connection with the wider buying public, preferring to stay in the Roots Rock genre. There is little to celebrate, after Information, occasional songs that rose above the fray, surrounded by dreck.

The CD has both the single and album mixes, along with a handful of bonus tracks.

Thanks for ranking the Dave Edmunds albums. I tend to cherry pick material from the ..As Subtle As.. up to DE7. I will investigate Dave later, Albums. ‘From Small Things’ ‘Generation Rumble’ One More Night’. More recently I rate highly Dave’s cover of ‘I Got The Will’. You can always rely on Dave to turn in a good Chuck Berry cover, through out his career. Echoes of Buddy Holly on ‘Other Guys Girls’ & ‘Deborah’..
