Wow, that was a fabulously in-depth review, very comprehensive indeed. You certainly have spent a bit of time with this watch. I have been after a Casio for ages now, been a Seiko and Citizen fan for years, and was tossing up getting a Mudman - until I saw this watch. Quad sensor and so many features and functions, almost like a smart watch but better. Your review/instructional guide was top notch, and when my watch arrives I will be re-watching your video for hands on instruction. Thanks heaps for taking the time. Cheers mate.

Thanks for the really detailed review. I have two questions. 1. What type of battery life would you expect from a watch such as this? It does not have a solar feature. Should it have one? Does Casio have a similar model with solar charging? 2. I really like the fact that it can hook up to a smartphone and that just expands the feature set. Do you know of any other brands that are similar? Again, thanks for the review.

Question: Does this require that the phone should be connected to the internet???? Asking this because we generally do not have cellular service on our trek routes. Hi DougFNJ, I am a UK viewer of this video which is great! Could you advise on the following please? If you replace the battery yourself, will that not possibly damage the water seal? Does the bezel move easily, or require a little effort. I get irritated moving them back in position. I think it's great that you seem to answer everyone's questions. I am torn between this watch and the Pro-Trek PRG 600-1CR. Which would you choose? I know that the PRG is solar, but a lot of functions use the screw in button. Many thanks Terry Davis.
Thank you Terry! I typically have jewelers change the battery so they could properly reseal it with the correct seals. You can order the seals off eBay or maybe Casio as well and keep it watertight. If you go into the water a lot with watches, its always suggested to get the water resistance checked annually. The bezel does move easy enough both directions, but I don't find myself having to adjust it often. I always personally prefer more functions, but that is very subjective to budget, and just buying what you need. I love Solar, I find my solar watches. My 10 year old solar watches still don't need battery changes.
Thank you for the review. It is speeding along the orientation process for me. Two questions: I see how to customize the Find Your Phone features but I do not see how to activate the feature so that it signals the phone to make a tone. And finally, what does Recall refer to in the menu? Thank you!
When i using route log, and turn the phone screen off, my application didn’t record route map. Is that normal?. Or i need to make my my phone screen always on. ?
Thanks for your clear and depth review. About location memory and indicator, is a smartphone necessary for those features? What if my phone runs out of battery during hiking? Thanks.
Thank you Doug! Very helpful information! Especially the app walk through. Just wondering if there is any chance to hear your opinion for Garmin instinct and PRT-B50 comparison. Or maybe could you tell me how many route logs PRT-B50 could save? Also, could I download other's gpx file and import into PRT-B50 before I start hiking? I love the "photo way points"feature, which I think Garmin does not have, but Garmin provides more personal activities records. I'm just a weekend hiker but enjoying watch my own hiking history. Thanks again! your video provides a lot of useful, and practical information.
Very descriptive video. One question I have is is this of much use really if you are lost during a trek? Because it needs to use the gps location at start of the trip from the base village and we need to again use the gps of the mobile to fix the final point or the place where we need help to come back to base village. What will happen if mobile battery dies in between? Without that is is not going to fix the lost position and so there will be no use of setting the starting point of the trek?
If you are a serious hiker and going out, you would likely want to have a mobile battery charger for the phone, or at least know the direction back to the starting point so you could use the compass to find your way back.
Great review. Do you know anything about the lcd differences between the 5601 models? Yours was dark on clear and mine is clear on dark. The lcd info pops better with your watch than the one I have. Wish there was a way to change that.
If you are daring and willing to open it up, there is a way to change the polar glass and turn it positive. There are tutorials on TH-cam, search for changing negative digital to positive.
@@DougFNJ hey thanks for the answer. This kinda defeats the purpose. I wish there was a watch that could gps navigate without phone. Not smartwatch tho, cause thats a different category.
Hi Doug.. i just bought this watch after watching your video.how do i link my picture taken during the route log?.i take a picture but its was not appear in the map. happy if you can help me.. thanks
Hi Sophian, thank you for watching! Are you using an iPhone? The first thing that happens when I tap into all activity is to give permission to the app to access my photos. As I was actively using the activity, I took photos during the hike, they automatically attached into the points I took them. It was very streamlined. Check your app permissions, that should fix your problem. Please let us know if that works.
Sorry to hear that Johan, that is definitely an exception, don't hear a lot of that happen. I'd contact Casio

In 22:02 you show the calendar view for steps. For the life of me I cannot figure out what the small mountain icon means. Could you please tell me? Thanks!
I haven't used the Traverse, but the biggest difference with this watch and the Core is the Analog Digital of course, and the GPS and App features definitely stand out. This watch is overall much more functional than the Suunto, but I believe the Suunto may have more accurate sensors.
The watch uses the phone for GPS capabilities. I believe you need to be in service zone, it isn't downloading maps to the phone, it is generating them. If you really want on board GPS, you could look into the Rangeman, its big, but very capable.
@@DougFNJ got it thanks, I've noticed even the Garmin instinct looses most of its capabilities with no phone service which seems like these outdoor watches biggest weak spot
15:17 Hello there. I just have a question: how can I get that track with all that curves, just like your path actually was in real time? I just can't make it happen... I long press to log....and the recording starts...i make the walk where I want....but when it saves, after I long press again 5sec, in the app I only get 2 -3 random straight lines that connects the start and end point, not the actually path with curves and so on?😢😢 I just don't know how to do it. Could you please teach how to do it? I'd send you a picture with the actual recordig so you can see what I mean... Thank you
I noticed that route log is actually record GPS data of the phone. But , when your phone screen is off, Protrek apps didn’t get that GPS data. Then i make my phone screen always on, then it worked just like Avenza App or just like this Yt Channel showed. I think it’s because android location access is set as “using GPS - allowed only while in use.. app” not “Allowed all the time”. This setting can’t be changed because of the Protrek app don’t have “allowed all the time” location option
@@DougFNJ Makes sense but they then weirdly reused the same module on the more expensive Mudmaster GG-B100. I guess we'll have to wait for a newer model to get ToughSolar.

Thanks for your clear and depth review. About location memory and indicator, is a smartphone necessary for those features? What if my phone runs out of battery during hiking? Thanks.
Thank you for watching. Yes, the watch and App depends on the phones GPS, if the phone runs out of battery, it loses its GPS source.
@@DougFNJ Thanks.
@@DougFNJ Yes most of the other fitness trackers' also depend on phone's signal for GPS.
How do I add a fishing location on the watch
Thats not available on this watch, the newer Pathfinders just released show it now
Thank you Doug!
Thank you Chun, I may have to look at a Garmin watch in the future. Right now I have a lot of reviews to catch up on, but I will put that on the list.
If you had the chance to get this one or the PRG-600, which one would you go for?
I prefer the darker bezels on these, so this one. My favorite regarding looks is PRW-6600. Let us know what direction you go.
@@DougFNJ Thanks Doug. I know the PRT and PRG are both large watches, but which would your say wears the smaller of the two?
Do you know what size the crystal is on the PRT-B50? I want to see if I can find a screen protector when I order this beauty.
3.5mm width. Enjoy!!! Amazing how much tech they fit into this!
Your previews are amazing, I have one question though? How can the analoge and digital time be the same
Thank you so much!! can you elaborate on being the same?
Thanks for the in depth review. I really appreciate the time stamps.
You are very welcome, thank you for your feedback.
Wonderful watch and top notch review 👍
Thank you very much Bharath! Glad you enjoyed.
Thanks bro, very detailed video. Looking to buy this one. Keep it up!
Edit: question, do you need the phone with you to use the routing feature?
Thank you for watching and taking time to comment, always appreciate it! You do need the phone for routing, the watch is using the phones GPS.
@@DougFNJ hey thanks for the answer. This kinda defeats the purpose. I wish there was a watch that could gps navigate without phone. Not smartwatch tho, cause thats a different category.
About the location point do i need the app to use this feature?
Thanks for watching. You do need the app, the location features of this watch work using the GPS on your phone.
DougFNJ thanks a lot you are the best in watch review
What a great review, very detailed ! Thanks a lot !
Happy to do it Gauthier, thank you for watching and taking time to comment! Always appreciate it
Hi Doug.. i just bought this watch after watching your video.how do i link my picture taken during the route log?.i take a picture but its was not appear in the map. happy if you can help me..
Was very impressed with the videos and bought one batery lasted two weeks module faulty wont buy a Casio watch again
Sorry to hear that Johan, that is definitely an exception, don't hear a lot of that happen. I'd contact Casio
In 22:02 you show the calendar view for steps. For the life of me I cannot figure out what the small mountain icon means. Could you please tell me? Thanks!
Thats a great question, and looking at the manual online, it appears if signifies a hike when using the tracking.
How does this compare to a Suunto core or Traverse?
I haven't used the Traverse, but the biggest difference with this watch and the Core is the Analog Digital of course, and the GPS and App features definitely stand out. This watch is overall much more functional than the Suunto, but I believe the Suunto may have more accurate sensors.
can you do the location features with no phone paired? or in an out of service zone?
The watch uses the phone for GPS capabilities. I believe you need to be in service zone, it isn't downloading maps to the phone, it is generating them. If you really want on board GPS, you could look into the Rangeman, its big, but very capable.
@@DougFNJ got it thanks, I've noticed even the Garmin instinct looses most of its capabilities with no phone service which seems like these outdoor watches biggest weak spot
Are the sensor readings fairly accurate?
For the most part yes, there could be variables that throw it off, but these Pathfinders have a good reputation for reliability
Couple questions why does it say position failed when I'm trying to do the location indicator. How long will my first point be remembered for
Hmm, it should be remembered the entire trip. I wonder if you are either in an area with bad signal? Is it definitely paired when you are doing this?
@@DougFNJ yes it did pair for sure is there any settings on my phone that might need to be switched
I can’t get the Alarm to work it doesn’t show up for me
Thank you for such detailed review. Really considering to buy this.
Thanks for watching, happy to do it
I have it, epic watch but the step counter is useless....makes like 5 times more steps than actual steps compared to any smart watch
These step counters on most of these watches are not the best, but at least it gives you somewhat of an idea that your out there active.
does the location indicator work if your phone doesnt have service.
Great question! I’m thinking it should as it’s working with Bluetooth and GPS and not the network.
How do you move the Minute Hand?
Are you talking about hand alignment correction?
@@DougFNJ Yes
@@DougFNJ how do you move the Minute Hand to correct the time?
15:17 Hello there. I just have a question: how can I get that track with all that curves, just like your path actually was in real time? I just can't make it happen... I long press to log....and the recording starts...i make the walk where I want....but when it saves, after I long press again 5sec, in the app I only get 2 -3 random straight lines that connects the start and end point, not the actually path with curves and so on?😢😢
I just don't know how to do it.
This setting can’t be changed because of the Protrek app don’t have “allowed all the time” location option
that's the real review. Thanks for your efford
Thanks for watching!
What's your wrist size?
7 1/2 inches
@@DougFNJ oh great thanks.
Too Good review.Fall in love with it this watch. Good news is that do not have to charge often.
Thank you, enjoy the watch!
nice review dude, I'm stuck as to which protrek so your vid is very helpful :)
Thank you, happy to help. did you decide on which version?
@@DougFNJ yup think I'm going for this one PRW-3510Y-8CR :D
@@DougFNJ hey Doug, went with the RW-3510Y-8CR in the end, super happy with it!
Wonder why they skimped on the tough solar...
my guess is to keep this as a budget watch
@@DougFNJ Makes sense but they then weirdly reused the same module on the more expensive Mudmaster GG-B100.
I guess we'll have to wait for a newer model to get ToughSolar.
Very useful review! Thanks. Waiting to receive a 4er model in really spectacular orange color.
Thank you! Please let us know your thoughts when you get it.
@@DougFNJ Of course
Very good review video. Thank you bro.
But i can't understand that why solar is very important for many people? This watch has not solar but no worries, you can change battery :)
I have yet to need to change a battery on one of my solar Casio watches, including watches I have owned for 10-15 years. Thats a nice convenience. I do find non solar holds up very well for a long time too.
Really great review. Now I want one 😃
Thank you. Go for it!!
Fantastic review (as always) of a really incredible timepiece. Thanks for always sharing your knowledge with us👍😊
Happy to do it William, glad it helped. If you like this watch, check out the review I just uploaded of the Rangeman.
Nice review...very detail 👍👍👍
Thank you for your feedback and watching.
Thank you. Good review.
