There was a kids amusement Park on Queens Boulevard in Rego Park before Macy's Department Stor complex was built in the 1960s. I have photos in my bedroom in a plastic bag. Today in NYC, there is only one in Coney Island, Brooklyn.
Thanks for posting this! When I was little I used to beg my parents to take us there when we drove out to Collingdale to visit my grandparents. I think I remember the track with the cars on it but otherwise my only real memory is seeing Sally Starr in person at the park.
I never saw Sally Starr there but I do have fond memories of that place and it was kind of a shame they tore it down if you think about it because all these decades later people would still take little kids there if they could
My sister and I grew up a few miles away in Collingdale. Very fond memories of the times we would get to go. We loved Playtown and were very sad to see it go.
I grew up in Clifton Heights. I remember they had some coin-operated thing where a chicken would come out behind glass and do a trick. Loved this place.
Loved this place growing up I used to hang out there as a kid. Played lots of pinball . Grew up in Morton and moved to Ca. In 1968. Hi to my old friend Ken Wareham if you revisit this post. Chris Falcioni
Also where in California did you move to ? Lucky you most of us wanted to go to Cali... are you still there.... if so can you talk about how much the place has changed
Oh, many good memories there. I grew up in Springfield roughly 4 1/2 blocks from Playtown Park, walking distance. We'd go there as a family outing in the summer during the 1950's. I hadn't realized it was still there in 1962 - I guess I was too "sophisticated" for it by then as that was the year I graduated from high school. Thanks for posting.
I remember it well, I was born in 1957 also did all the local TV shoes like Happy The Clown, Chief Halftown, Wee Willy Webber and Gene London, Pixanne etc.
I was also born in '57 as well. And I do remember Sally Starr, Pixanne, Gene London, Happy the Clown, Rex Morgan, and Wee Willie Weber. In fact, I used to watch Sally Starr right after I got home from school when I was in third and fourth grade.
I don't remember Rex Morgan but I remember the rest of them.... Wee Willie Webber also on the radio... real friendly guy . Back around maybe the year 2000 ? ... I was at a banquet one evening in the Philadelphia area and I could not believe when I walked by a table and there was my childhood hero Gene London.... I absolutely could not believe it .... I got to chat with him and he was still handsome and kind .
That's got to be the playtown park in Springfield Delaware County Pennsylvania.... same rides... but I didn't see cups and saucers.... also the spook house that you would go riding around in that was all dark n creepy inside . I loved going there.... great memories.. . Thank you for the upload I just wish this was a little bit longer that's all . I can't remember what year they closed Playtown Park... anyone remember ?
@@CServis yeah I started realizing that.... there is no way of place could be so identical to this ... thanks for uploading that .... it brought back a lot of memories and I have no pics at all of me there with my family especially my mom . I actually just got done looking at a bunch of your vids . You said you later moved to Drexel Hill.... the picnics and the outings in the backyard look like Drexel Hill , sort of the area behind Bishop Avenue and Burmont Road... or over near Shadeland Avenue .
I'm your age... some of those kids look like they were 4 yrs old but some look like they are two ... so basically most of them would be about 60 ish more or less. .. really where does the time go
Yep I have some fond memories there except I hated it when my mom would take me in that spook house... do you remember that ride that went through that dark spook house with the creepy things jumping out ... I think my favorite was the cups and saucers
I remember the miniature golf course at the front entrance the ferris wheel and the big tall statue of the guy in the front. I was just a little kid when I went here and loved this place. I also remember that after the park closed that the golf course and ferris wheel were still open for one last season. It was such a treat to go there for the day.
Wow that's really cool.... I was there later.... do you remember what year it closed ? Do you remember other places in the area... no one in my family remembers this bar that my dad liked to go in that was on Norwinden and Baltimore Pike... sat slightly back from Baltimore Pike . It had a sign with the face of one of those dogs with the big droopy eyes and mouth and it said Wunderhaus .. inside the bar somewhere on the wall being in the doghouse . but it had another name and I can't remember now what it was .... also do you remember the DeVille Diner on Baltimore Pike on the same side as the bazaar but on the other side of Bishop Avenue ? I think it also was called the Fireside Hearth ... it had Stone steps... maybe made out of in laid slate going to the glass doors
we went here as kids all the time. it was five minutes from our house. i just loved it. thanks for posting this because i can't find pix of it anywhere!!!!
I have great memories of this place. We hung out at the arcade, playing pinball. My brother, Chris was good friends with Ken Wareham, who commented on this video a few months back. Does anyone else remember when local celebrity Sally Star made a personal appearance there?
I don't remember when Sally Starr was there but I would have loved that as I absolutely adored her as a kid but I certainly remember having a lot of fun at PlayTown Park
OMg I loved Playtown Park. What great childhood memories. By today's standard, the park was nothing more than a collection of cheap carnival rides. My, have we changed.
I remember Sally Starr... but I remember her not being there but showing up with Chief Halftown either at the Bazaar... or on Clifton field on July 4th
I remember reading a very sad article about her where she became pretty impoverished in her later days... and that made me so sad because I adored her when I was a kid
Yep same here.... by any chance do you remember what year they tore it down ?.... I just remember driving by there and all the amusements and everything were gone but I don't even know when that was I just cannot recall
I've been trying to figure out what year it closed down.... 70 or 71 might sound about right now that I think about it.... we were lucky to have that place
it may have in '71, but I think earlier. Before Kohl's it was a Clover store which was a branch of the Strawbridge & Clothier. It went up, and the Strawbridge on 420 went down the same year. I was born in 59, and my friends and I hung-out in the ruins of play town, 71&72

I cannot for the life of me recall when it actually closed.... do you remember when that was ?
I grew up in Clifton Heights. I remember they had some coin-operated thing where a chicken would come out behind glass and do a trick. Loved this place.

I lived briefly on Althea Lane and Morton when I was little when my mother got sick... did you know any people on Althea Lane
Also where in California did you move to ? Lucky you most of us wanted to go to Cali... are you still there.... if so can you talk about how much the place has changed
I grew up in Morton as well.

Glad you enjoyed it. This was in my fathers collection of film.
I was 7 also in 62.....lived right behind the Park
Wow... to live so close to that place must have been a temptation to go there a lot .
@DebbsHereNow Thanks! My dad filmed this. We used to live in Philly a long time ago,
Do you still live in the Philadelphia area.... it sounds like you moved... I moved away from the whole Northeast some years ago myself .
I remember it well, I was born in 1957 also did all the local TV shoes like Happy The Clown, Chief Halftown, Wee Willy Webber and Gene London, Pixanne etc.

Ray Josephs boy did you hit a nerve! I remember everyone but happy the clown.
I don't remember Rex Morgan but I remember the rest of them.... Wee Willie Webber also on the radio... real friendly guy .

Great Video. I grew up in Springfield and was 7 in 1962. I vaguely remember going there.
Yeah it was a simpler time I have good memories of Delaware County when I was little
I was also 7 in 1962.

I was only 4 in August of '62. My parents used to take me there when I was a kid. Those kids in that are probably all their 50's today.
I'm your age... some of those kids look like they were 4 yrs old but some look like they are two ... so basically most of them would be about 60 ish more or less. .. really where does the time go
Parents took me and my older sister there in mid 60s. It was always fun but a little bit seedy at the same time, as I recall.
this is incredible!!!! I LOVED that place!
Yep I have some fond memories there except I hated it when my mom would take me in that spook house... do you remember that ride that went through that dark spook house with the creepy things jumping out ... I think my favorite was the cups and saucers

That was the coolest place ...we were so lucky to have it while it lasted
I don't remember the statue at all... can you describe the statue ?
Loved that place playtown park! Thanks for sharing the memories I was there about 1955
Wow that's really cool.... I was there later.... do you remember what year it closed ?

Yeah playtown Park was such a great place and I don't think we have any pictures of it either

I don't remember when Sally Starr was there but I would have loved that as I absolutely adored her as a kid but I certainly remember having a lot of fun at PlayTown Park
I was there in the 1960's - family fun was so easy then.
Grew up at Playtown Park. My dad had a funny nickname, Buzzy Boo Park and everytime he said that, we knew we were going to Playtown Park.
Cute story
i live right outside of springfield, never knew there was an amusment park there once!
Yes I remember being there when I was a kid when I was really little in the early 60s... I loved that place... it really is too bad they got rid of it
OMg I loved Playtown Park. What great childhood memories. By today's standard, the park was nothing more than a collection of cheap carnival rides. My, have we changed.
Yeah I have great memories there
To the best of my knowledge, no child was ever injured there.
Yes, I have a lot of memories there!
Playtown Park was a big part of my early childhood. We would spend an afternoon there then go to Charlie’s for hamburgers and milkshakes.
I’m glad you got to see the video.
Yes! You just tweaked a distant memory. I remember Sally Star appearing there, it was a very big deal.
I remember Sally Starr... but I remember her not being there but showing up with Chief Halftown either at the Bazaar... or on Clifton field on July 4th
I remember reading a very sad article about her where she became pretty impoverished in her later days... and that made me so sad because I adored her when I was a kid
That's really cool. I'm stil amazed by the amounf of people who contact me about this video.
I grew up in Philadelphia but later moved Drexel Hill. I think this was gone by then.
Yeah for some reason I cannot remember when Playtown Park disappeared... thank you so much for the upload though .
Very good video, You look bored working the ride. LOL
It was a fun place place
I rember we used to have so much fum there.
Yep same here.... by any chance do you remember what year they tore it down ?.... I just remember driving by there and all the amusements and everything were gone but I don't even know when that was I just cannot recall
Kohl's now occupies the site. I believe Playtown Park shut down in 1971. I was so disappointed.
I've been trying to figure out what year it closed down.... 70 or 71 might sound about right now that I think about it.... we were lucky to have that place

went on Sundays!
Great memories of that place
That’s a Kohl’s now
