The reason in knights of the old republic that there were tons of sith is that darth bane created the rule of two and the Knights of the old republic was before darth bane's time.

There can only be 2 Sith Lords because Darth Bane passed the Rule of 2
I personally liked the rule of 2 but it was a disadvantage for the sith since there can only be 2 and for an apprentice to have their own apprentice they would have to kill/get rid of their masters that most of them do (maybe even all of them did that)
because they were all attacking each other.

There can onky be two because after knights of the okd republic there was this guy named darth bane who set uo the ruke of two because he realized they couldnt beat the jedi with an army but had to use trickery. So he destroyed the sith of his era and aset up his new order. And that was about 1 thousand years before A New Hope.
Maul isn't "eviler" than Vader. Vader has NO GOOD left in him; that was Anakin who was deeply burried in him. EVEN PALPATINE HAS GOOD IN HIM! He saved Anakin, normally; Sith Lords would betray each other yet Palpatine saved Vader. Maul is also no longer a Sith, he's just Maul or "The Shadow".
