I'd love to see a B-Sides & Rarities by John with studio versions of this and songs like The Hurt and the Hotel Bathroom song. I think it'd be amazing and I'd buy it in a heart beat!
I'm pretty sure this was at his concert at the San Francisco Fillmore right after Katrina. He was there for two nights. I went to the first one and it was a great concert.
@25Ragz Battle Studies was actually a really well-crafted album that wasn't necessarily meant to showcase just guitar but John's whole musical ability. The layering that went into all the songs - Heartbreak Warfare, Edge of Desire, Friends, Lovers or Nothing and Assassin just to name my favourites - is crazy and to say that it 'isn't a good album' is incredibly insulting to the amount of effort he obviously puts into his music.
He sounds so true and emotional especially in the choruses! I know he doesn’t sing it flawlessly cuz it’s pretty high but it’s even better this way to me😮💨
@vodoochild994 im personally impressed by the new singles and how John has evolved, and you really have to take into account the way he writes/composes because he really bases it all in his personal situation, It has some kind of Bob Dylan feel to it, I Love the crude pain and misery in this rich songs.
@25Ragz He's said that it's not better than Continuum, it doesn't mean he wasn't happy with it. It's always going to be hard for him to top Continuum because that was a fantastic album, but that doesn't mean Battle Studies should be completely disregarded as being any good. Also keep in mind that it is a concept album based around juxtaposing love and war, and you can't say he did a bad job in putting that idea across - in fact i think he did that very convincingly.

its on the screen in front of you ;) just press your keyboard's Print Screen button and paste it in to Word, and email, Microsoft Paint (or equivalent on the Mac)
The song was first performed on the opening night (or second night) of the John Mayer Trio tour in 2005. The song never made it further than that I don't think except for one or two more performances. A lot of songs were written during the trio tour that ended up on Continuum, Vultures for one, this one just didn't it would seem. Nice song though.
@johnnnybruce Does not matter what he promises. He always comes up with something new and different. There are so many elements to his music. You cant just say "too much pop stuff".
@mabie551 Yeah I agree, Battle studies has way too many of the pop stuff, he promised the guitar fans to be more interesting to them on the next album. We shall see
seems like unless you release an album that sells more than continuum or battle studies you can't criticize I prefer continuum to battlle studies but they're different albums. I can still listen to continuum when I'm in the mood and a new John Mayer album is just that. A JOHN MAYER album... let him release what HE wants. I'll support whatever direction he wants to take it and if you don't like it don't buy it and work on releasing your own music before you criticize one on today's music legends
The Fillmore, San Francisco 7/9/2005. Download song or entire show for free on Internet Archive/Live Music Archive. Only time I have been to west coast, but honestly I was underwhelmed by the trio, and don't get me started on Dead and Company and their butchery. Need a cure for insomnia check them out.....
Me too. i haven't heard any cool guitar parts or solos yet. It seems like he is going back 6 years to the old simplistic JM (which isn't necessarily bad, i guess). Not what I was expecting though...
if this is a really recent song like pretty near to march 1st when this is posted then i think it might be a battle studies song that he was trying out live...apperantly he is playing random shows unnanounced to try his new music out
@Kolster33...seriously? hurricane katrina? that was 4 years ago now. Continuum would have been the album for a Katrina song...this about his parent's divorce...think about it
Battle Studies isn't as much soul as the others...but it definitely has some. Sure there are several pop tracks on there, but they're pretty darn good.
I went out walking tonight
Cuz I need to
Everything that I had
I’m waiting on
Gave ‘til I gave all I could
And kept a little
Finding it hard to believe
Everything’s gone
Gone
Gone
How am I gonna run back home
With a heart so heavy
How am I gonna make my way
When I can’t find the road
How am I gonna beat this pain
When I can’t see how deep it goes
Heaven knows but I don’t
Faith is a backless design
But I still choose it
I’ve followed it all of the time
But carry on
I used to live by the line
As good as a circle
What does it do for me know
Everything’s gone
Gone
Gone
Chorus
Interlude
So how am I gonna run back home
With a heart so heavy
How am I gonna make my way
When I can’t find the road
How am I gonna beat this pain
When I can’t see how deep it goes
Heaven knows but I don’t
I still believe love
I still believe love
I do I do
I still believe love
I still believe love…
so much to thank this man for.
I was listening to this song when I got the news that my grandfather passed away yesterday. It somehow made sense, in a very beautiful way.
I don't deserve to feel like this
I'd love to see a B-Sides & Rarities by John with studio versions of this and songs like The Hurt and the Hotel Bathroom song. I think it'd be amazing and I'd buy it in a heart beat!
UsernameStartsWithU throw Taking on Water in there too. I'd have a breakdown.
DaddyChan drop in a high quality version of Lifelines and I’m in.
Also A Break in The Clouds!
Even though this song is basically unknown, it is by far my favorite john mayer song. Good stuff
I'm pretty sure this was at his concert at the San Francisco Fillmore right after Katrina. He was there for two nights. I went to the first one and it was a great concert.
4 years laterafter you posted this video... Everyone listen to Paradise Valley and shut up. He has done it once again. Thank you John,

Im 7 years late, but Battlestudies feels the most John Mayer musically!
3 years later and i can't pull myself off this song. love it so much
My fiance and I recently called the wedding off and broke up. This song really hits the spot right now.
I feel you man.
Hope all is well 10 years later man
@@Elijahm7Make that 12.
He sounds so true and emotional especially in the choruses! I know he doesn’t sing it flawlessly cuz it’s pretty high but it’s even better this way to me😮💨
this is a hard reality for many songwriters.
I'd like to hear both a studio acoustic version of this and a studio "suped" up version :)
That makes sense. When I downloaded it, it said "John Mayer Trio" and I was didn't believe it. Now it all clicks. Thanks man.
this pic is of him is sick ... i want a pic of me like this on stage... hahah
Like the "I'm portable" on AGT, which was awesome.
@vodoochild994 im personally impressed by the new singles and how John has evolved, and you really have to take into account the way he writes/composes because he really bases it all in his personal situation, It has some kind of Bob Dylan feel to it, I Love the crude pain and misery in this rich songs.
i'm so glad i found this song, it's beautiful :D
JOHN MAYER ROCKS !
This is one of my favs!! Thanks 🙏

beautiful lyrics
Come on 2021! Great post!👍🏽👍🏽
I went out walking tonight
'Cause I need to
Everything that I had
I'm waiting on
Gave 'til I gave all I could
And kept a little
Finding it hard to believe
Everything's gone
Gone
Gone
How am I gonna run back home
With a heart so heavy
How am I gonna make my way
When I can't find the road
How am I gonna beat this pain
When I can't see how deep it goes
Heaven knows but I don't
Faith is a backless design
But I still choose it
I've followed it all of the time
But carry on
I used to live by the line
As good as a circle
What does it do for me know
Everything's gone
Gone
Gone
So how am I gonna run back home
With a heart so heavy
How am I gonna make my way
When I can't find the road
How am I gonna beat this pain
When I can't see how deep it goes
Heaven knows but I don't
I still believe love
I still believe love
I do I do
I still believe love
I still believe love...
Too sad. This will never be us ❤️
its on the screen in front of you ;) just press your keyboard's Print Screen button and paste it in to Word, and email, Microsoft Paint (or equivalent on the Mac)
I thought I lost this song. Leave it to Chaferbud to restore my hopes!!
In love this song is awesome
Perfeita!
Tão perfeita quanto aquela música que vc criou: Sambecca's train
I like it. It has a nice sound to it.
Heaven Knows....that is so true. ..and still I believe in love ...2 👄❤👄❤👄❤👄 love me some John Mayer ❤
You make me want to cry ....love you John Mayer ❤👄❤I here and I find the road home with you ❤I stayed ❤👍
what a great song! too bad can't download it..
considering it's not even released yet... good one
rockin the charley strat.
no this was at a trio show at the fillmore in CA in 2005
Seriously why is this song not for sale, I want this version!
"Heartbreak Warfare" sounds like U2's "Bad" But Im still a huge Mayer fan. Seen him 8 times, never gets old.
I vote for this
i'm sure it will, just that i'm into blues so i like what he did in continuum and try!.
Yess
i hear ya. i agree with you. he totally bombed that crossroads cover on his new cd. and whats bad is he usually plays it well live but not on this cd.
The song was first performed on the opening night (or second night) of the John Mayer Trio tour in 2005. WOW how'd i miss that one? lol
So sweet. Nice way to learn the lyrics. How much will I retain though?
Awesome
@johnnnybruce Does not matter what he promises. He always comes up with something new and different. There are so many elements to his music. You cant just say "too much pop stuff".
yeah man.. I really thought that too.. but maybe he's making blues after this album... I HOPE..!
@shru589 U forgot "Heartbreak Warfare", most definitely one of the best songs he has written.
i totally agree...
this song speaks for me.......:(
@Levidamanguitar: yes...they are. There was a write-up about it in his hometown paper. Look it up before you say something stupid.
@RideLXbindings that was my first thought too
Anyone know what the percussionist is hitting there? Congas? Djembe? Sounds nice
John mayer's new album
Battle studies 17-11-2009
gold
this sounds very coldplayish
you heard correctly, you can hear the final version somewhere on youtube
hahahaha i was thinking the exact same thing! plus he already has the heart of life and only heart... he's got to mix it up a little lol
because the album isn't released i haven't heard most of the songs? good one
i agree, heartbreak warfare is so freaking good
@mabie551 Yeah I agree, Battle studies has way too many of the pop stuff, he promised the guitar fans to be more interesting to them on the next album. We shall see

Did Mayer write this?
I agree

If nothing else, he’s brave
Me too. i haven't heard any cool guitar parts or solos yet. It seems like he is going back 6 years to the old simplistic JM (which isn't necessarily bad, i guess). Not what I was expecting though...
I need this. Is there anywhere I can download it?!?!
How the heck did you get all these awesome unreleased JM song recordings?
he is mayer in disguise
i'm sure battle studies will be just as awesome as continuum
if this is a really recent song like pretty near to march 1st when this is posted then i think it might be a battle studies song that he was trying out live...apperantly he is playing random shows unnanounced to try his new music out
@Kolster33...seriously? hurricane katrina? that was 4 years ago now. Continuum would have been the album for a Katrina song...this about his parent's divorce...think about it
i heard you hear from the version with aaron neville
Where/how can i get/download this song???
Is there an mp3 for this song?
Is there anyone who knows if it's John that's written this song?
Why would he put a song that's both older than the trio album and written for somebody else on his new album?
Heartbreak Warfare vibes here
@voodoochild994 Look at Continuum and "Waiting on the World to change"... Enough said.
@chaferbud I thought that was a given lol.
Chords???
This was written in response to hurricane katrina
💔
Battle Studies isn't as much soul as the others...but it definitely has some. Sure there are several pop tracks on there, but they're pretty darn good.
Who else hears "Shadow Days" in this song???
@voodoochild994 The new album is amazing! Esp these songs - Assassin, Edge of Desire ..
JM rules!
@Ethonadon10 okay thanks :)
He's John Mayer, obviously.
listen to heartbreak warfare, the studio version. your concerns will vanish
except for the fact that a lot of this album was made with the trio.
THIS SONG IS OLD PEOPLE. I think it was written after Hurricane Katrina.
I heard he did this song for Katrina relief.
I think this song is possibly pertaining to Katrina.
Just a guess.
yeah
wow
thats weird
he's not a voice crack kinda guy
i guess it happens to the best of us
ah, well i knew it was some disaster of some sort in the US. What a guy!
i'm a little dissappointed with battle studies so far, was really hoping for another blues/rock album
umm i think he's a guitar god.
@alexanderthemarsh if you're going to be like that, i'd rather you be back at sea.
i really love when people argue on my channel. grow up!
I have.
