I am picturing Mayer and Cook at a Berklee's dorm, talking about that Mrs. Busybody over a drink and then coming up with this beautiful tune. Funny how we can all relate to the lyrics at some point but I guess that's life - just when you think you are in a dead end emotionally, you find out something like this and understand that you are not alone and sadness would pass by one day. Thank you guys for this piece of music, it is a soul healer indeed.
Yes! Well put. They both and John himself absolutely came up with some incredible lyrics even when they were just bebes really. Amazing and also depressing 😂 I mean inspiring. Gtg read ‘Writing Better Lyrics’ 👋 😘 🌶
wow... this is the first time i've heard this song and it just has proved my statement that i have said a million times and that is that "John mayer is one of the best musicians of our time"
I haven't listened to this for 10 or 15 years, and it's amazing how the tune and lyrics just come back to me, as fresh as they did back then. The line "Six numbers, one more to dial" makes me feel old trying to remember the last time I could call someone with just 7 digits, though.
Six numbers, one more to dial Before I'm before you I tried to call, been busy all night Gave up waiting at daylight Excuse me Mrs. Busybody Could you pencil me in when you can And we both know that the worst part about it is I would be free if you wanted me, if you wanted me I am the man on the side Hoping you'll make up your mind I am the one who will swallow his pride Life as the man on the side One of the many, and one of the few To stand back and wait for you Excuse me Mrs. Busybody Could you pencil me in when you can Cause we both know the worst part about it is I would be free if you wanted me If you wanted me, if you wanted me I am the man on the side Hoping you'll make up your mind I am the one who will swallow his pride Life as the man on the side Life as the man on the side I fell in love with the dream that I built of you Playing the part of the queen Taking my own advice I'm giving up tonight Good luck to you and the king Excuse me, Mrs. Busybody Could you pencil me in But we both know that the worst part about it is I would be free if you wanted me If you wanted me When you wanted me I am the man on the side Hoping you'll make up your mind I am the one who will swallow his pride Life as the man You know life as the man, baby Life as the man on the side
out of all the unreleased songs he has. this is the one that i wish so badly would be on a album. its the lyrics. i think pretty much all of his songs are strong as far as melody chords and musicality goes. but lyrically this one is far beyond your body is a wonderland lol.
This is the version that I first became acquainted with, so it feels like a studio version to me, with only a few quirks. The vocal volume changes a bit, but that sort of works in this case.
There's no life on the side for JM! There's no decision, couldn't be any other way. He is SO wanted. This song is a real heartbreaker from a Master, the Man and the King ❣🌟💎👑
My guitar proficiency is directly proportionate to the suffering i felt from stubbornly trying to summon the love i want into the existence. And the cards have once again fell so that i get to drink and learn this song, imagining that telepathically she will feel how much i cared for her... While he gets to have her...
Hi would love to know what you think of my 17 year old grandsons cover of this. It has a long guitar intro though th-cam.com/video/Q98dA52Dxtg/w-d-xo.html
Haha, I like to say I'm a man man... But geeze John... Sing it brother! Idk what these little wet things coming out of my eyes are but they feel kinda funny
magic131 a guy can express his feelings however the fuck he feels, sexual orientation has nothing to do with it, not to mention how its none of your business. a straight guy, but not that its any of your business
GOD, I've already discovered this song in this acoustic version, and...it only proves, that I love/adore/amore/like each and every song of this man. Brilliant musician.
one of the most touching songs ive evr heard....john mayer awes me with his take on many emotional issues....many ppl relate 2 his songs n he opens up our feelings lyk no one else.....God bless u john...keep doin it dat way !
haha well im sure that would help but he would probley still rip it on what I have.. I have a cool video actually on my twitter of a random guitar gets passed up to stage and he kills it
Andy Skywalker The best tip anybody will ever give to you is "Don't think" Just let your fingers do it all without second thinking. That is the difference between people that are GREAT and good
Sometimes the words just hit you. One moment you just listen to a song like this and it all just comes together but breaks you apart. Finally about to give up waiting at daylight. Peace
Man thank you! We all know John's official releases never go wrong, but IMHO, his best performance always emerges from his live performances or demos. All his killer licks that make me shiver and want to spend days to learn note by note all come from his live performances
This is great, thanks for posting. In the commentary or extras for Any Given Thursday, he talks about how he was not even planning to play this song in that show, but decided to play it at the last second. Glad he did!
I just love finding records of my favourite artists in they beginning. The same thing happened when i discovered Mayfield four (with myles kennedy) It's just awesome
Wow it shows how good of a singer he can be and obviously a great guitar player too. His singing in this is a lot different from "Any given thursday" too
This was an recorded in a coffee house in Georgia I found this originally on Napster over 15 years ago. It lives on a CD I made from those days from very rare recording from him. You can tell when he recorded this he was going through this at that very moment. This is maybe my all time favorite track from him.
BEST VERSION EVER! Remember listening to this version back in the days before Mayer even was a big name here in Europe. In a strange way, Mayer was better back then to me. More unspoilt, noth by the media and as a muscian. His older songs still goes straight to my heart, whilst the newer ones takes a little more time to get there.
Shut up Jimmy! And tell Tom to pipe down too. Only joking, love you brother ❤. Oh yeah, I just remembered something else, I’M NOT DOING IT. This sounds sweet though, beautiful guitar playing and arrangement. Tom’s sounding a bit shaky mind 😂 Xxxx
mayer put it on a special edition of room for squares and the live album any given thursday. The guitar work is lenny, you can't tell to well on here because it's acoustic, the lyrics are part of lenny and part written by mayer
Always loved this song, and specially this version. Today it relates to me to a hole f*cking new level. I wanna believe that I’ll be the king in the future, but honestly today I’m just giving up. The ball is in her court. Cheers to everyone on the same situation
He wrote/recorded this song for the first time when he was in his dorm room at Berklee in Boston. He was a freshman. I repeat, a freshman.
bahaanaldo Genius. The fact he was this lyrically strong even back then
How old is a freshman?
@@538-y6j Young. This Guy Is a Genius.
cgpriceisright - You’re right but I think John was 19 as a freshman took a year off
17 yrs old
so fucking hard to imagine john mayer as the man on the side.
I believe he wrote this song for someone else. I think it was for the same person City Love and Covered in Rain were written for.
+Billango Search 'John Mayer explains man on the side Pittsburgh'. He says it is about him & a girl he knew while he was at Berklee.
+Gabriel Lima nobody said you were being disrespectful buddy
not as hard to believe that Trump are the president of the United State of A
you're a nobody until you're a somebody
The original side nigga song
hahahahahahaha
This killed me 😂😂

Ivaylo Angelov greatly written! couldn't agree more!
Thank you, Josh. All the best my fellow JM fan. :)
Ivaylo Angelov that’s what I love we all have had these feelings we just never made a song out of it
Yes! Well put. They both and John himself absolutely came up with some incredible lyrics even when they were just bebes really. Amazing and also depressing 😂 I mean inspiring. Gtg read ‘Writing Better Lyrics’ 👋 😘 🌶
What’s a freshman
wow... this is the first time i've heard this song and it just has proved my statement that i have said a million times and that is that "John mayer is one of the best musicians of our time"
RYE & JAZZ *All time
He definately is the best musician I know! 🎶🎶
I absolutely love Ron Meyer - "Your Torso is a Water park".
Yo i hope you listen to this 14 years later
I haven't listened to this for 10 or 15 years, and it's amazing how the tune and lyrics just come back to me, as fresh as they did back then. The line "Six numbers, one more to dial" makes me feel old trying to remember the last time I could call someone with just 7 digits, though.
I live for these hidden gem songs
JM has a lot of those :D
Ikr! 😁 Just found hes cover of Mac miller's Small world. Was amazing.
Lifelines, New York building
@@knickymusic that’s a great one
Another kind of green, city love, covered in rain they are all these kind of stuffs and real good (they early days of JM songs are too good)
One of the most beautiful riff in guitar history.
This song evolved into Come Back to Bed, which evolved into Gravity.. this song is Gravity taking shape
And you, my friend, a genius beyond doubt
No it’s not lol
Wish he’d bring the other 2 back into rotation with gravity for live shows
This song is jut as good as Gravity. Its not a "1.0"
shit you are right... You can hear it. What a Genius JM is.
How is it John Mayer perfectly expresses 100% what I'm thinking?
The first time I heard this I said, "I can't beleive that the recording was 100% live and that an audience got to hear that live." Amazing.
It's 2020 and I'm still listening to and playing this all the time, such a great and relevant(unfortunately) song in my life.
I hope you find some peace dude.
Grow a fucking pair
Anyone else feel like JM is writing about their lives to the exact detail? In so many of his songs too. A master of articulating emotion.
Six numbers, one more to dial
Before I'm before you
I tried to call, been busy all night
Gave up waiting at daylight
Excuse me Mrs. Busybody
Could you pencil me in when you can
And we both know that the worst part about it is
I would be free if you wanted me, if you wanted me
I am the man on the side
Hoping you'll make up your mind
I am the one who will swallow his pride
Life as the man on the side
One of the many, and one of the few
To stand back and wait for you
Excuse me Mrs. Busybody
Could you pencil me in when you can
Cause we both know the worst part about it is
I would be free if you wanted me
If you wanted me, if you wanted me
I am the man on the side
Hoping you'll make up your mind
I am the one who will swallow his pride
Life as the man on the side
Life as the man on the side
I fell in love with the dream that I built of you
Playing the part of the queen
Taking my own advice
I'm giving up tonight
Good luck to you and the king
Excuse me, Mrs. Busybody
Could you pencil me in
But we both know that the worst part about it is
I would be free if you wanted me
If you wanted me
When you wanted me
I am the man on the side
Hoping you'll make up your mind
I am the one who will swallow his pride
Life as the man
You know life as the man, baby
Life as the man on the side
Damn he can shred guitar. That intro!!!
This is how I feel about this girl right now, especially when he says, "the worst part about it is I would be free when you wanted me..."
One of the smoothest intros I've ever heard
I've got to be at least 1,000 of these views
out of all the unreleased songs he has. this is the one that i wish so badly would be on a album. its the lyrics. i think pretty much all of his songs are strong as far as melody chords and musicality goes. but lyrically this one is far beyond your body is a wonderland lol.
This song is a testament to all the nice guys out there...
tf I thought it was studio version until he said thank you lol
Juding from the claps that must have been quite a private show tho.
This is the version that I first became acquainted with, so it feels like a studio version to me, with only a few quirks. The vocal volume changes a bit, but that sort of works in this case.
Really? Can't you tell from the audio, it's shit compared to studio quality.
I think it was recorded when he was just a normal stage stand guy so that's why there was no girl screaming around.
never understood why some of his all time best songs were unreleased. this is pure beauty and emotion
First song I've ever heard from John Mayer... almost 10 years ago :) loved him since that day. I'll never forget.
There's no life on the side for JM! There's no decision, couldn't be any other way. He is SO wanted. This song is a real heartbreaker from a Master, the Man and the King ❣🌟💎👑
2021 and I still have goosebumps with this song
I've been looking for this version for a long time. What an incredible song. Thank you for posting!
Hello my friend
This song and victoria are my favorite songs by him
one of my favourite songs to this day. learning this song brought so much more respect to it.
Hey John, even though you’re getting older, our new generation still get influenced by you, love you❤
Something about his guitar playing that pulls me in. I can't stop listening to it and I never seem to tire hearing it over and over again.
Yes...this!
this song embodies the essence of friendzone
That intro is pure magic!
Damn this song cuts deep...
I always come back to this song, it's just brilliant
My guitar proficiency is directly proportionate to the suffering i felt from stubbornly trying to summon the love i want into the existence.
And the cards have once again fell so that i get to drink and learn this song, imagining that telepathically she will feel how much i cared for her... While he gets to have her...
Your writing is hilariously clever. you sound like a mixture of Sherlock Holmes, but with the sorrows of Don Quixote.. Who do you read ?
My man u must be so good at guitar : )
wow, new favorite john mayer song!! The live version was my previous!
Wow this needs to be released. Goosebumps

mike albert Complete different topic, but nonetheless you are still an idiot
I think he was joking but how should I know, sarcasm doesn't come through that well on the internet
john mayer has left me speechless.. once again.
perfect song from a perfect musician
I've missed this.

Don’t give up. I was the man on the side. Now I’m the king
John you take my breath away every single timeee !!!!!
He makes his guitar sing along with him. So beautiful
Always a truly gifted artist who can express any story with that soulful beautiful voice!
John Mayers most noble song. Thanks for everything
ive practiced this for years and just will never be that smooth
That's okay. He is cheating with a 3,000 dollar guitar most likely :p
haha well im sure that would help but he would probley still rip it on what I have.. I have a cool video actually on my twitter of a random guitar gets passed up to stage and he kills it

The soul that he puts into his fingers on the fret board, cannot be mocked my friend. But I think we all know that. lol
He needs to make an album with this and Atmosphere, entitled: Acoustic Awesomeness
You think a guy who wrote this and atmosphere name his albumn ‘acoustic awesomeness’
This is great, thanks for posting. In the commentary or extras for Any Given Thursday, he talks about how he was not even planning to play this song in that show, but decided to play it at the last second. Glad he did!
Wow, this is the first I heard this! Thank you for the share... as always, AMAZING~
The bridge solo is so awesome! It fits perfectly into the song.

thank you so much for putthing this online! was looking for specifically this recording, love it so much, so many memories
Wow so beautiful!!
This guy is Einstein with a guitar. Like Einstein, there were talented people before him, but he took it to a whole new level.....
man he makes the bluesy stuff sound damn amazing at the beginning. reminds me of clapton's "unplugged"

I had this very recording too from a burned CD in 2001 and I can't find it anywhere! Do you know where I could download this version?

@heartsaremagnetsx absolutely! this song is pure and truly demonstrates john mayer's talents!

Thankyou SO much for uploading this
This is fantastic

This song is perfection.
i'm one of the lucky ones to have this recording too. Its one of the best recordings of this song imo.
heard this song today.. deep..
One of the best Mayer songs

This is genius songwriting.
The beginning of this is not from Lenny, by Stevie. He only plays Lenny on the any given Thursday DVD
That guitar playing is unreal...
amazing
I love John Mayer 😮
Great acoustic guitar sound! =)
Anyone have any info on when or where this was recorded? I have always wanted to know.
Ian Burt over 15 years ago in a coffeehouse
Where is the any given thursday version? Also known as the baggy jeans version. Also known as the 100% heart version
I very much prefer this version. Acoustic is so damn good.
brilliant.
Excellent.
Hmmmm , just amazing :-) . I play the song on the guitar. its so hard when you play 2 years o,o....
Can you play it now? :)
Still Gorgeous!
