- Sleeping Dogs is a game, that at the time of its initial release in 2012 didn't perform amazingly however to this day it has been regarded as an excellent game, often referred to as underrated. In today's video we're going to be exploring the qualities of Sleeping Dogs and figuring out if that label still applies.

Bought it when it first came out because I was bored and had nothing better to do, was blown away by how good it was especially when at the time it came out no one was even remotely talking about it
Sleeping Dogs 2 would be amazing for Next Gen consoles. Wei Shen having a sequel would be awesome.
The dlc made his story end sadly…

My heart is warming for how much people actually is engaging with this game nowdays and make some of the most recognizable concepts of other franchises like Yakuza, Batman Arkham and (Obviously) GTA, to make the most fun of it and at the same time making and inmersive and intriging setting of Honk Kong with no hesitation to reach over the top action and wacky culture references. If not a masterpiece, is truly something special and it deserves morr recognition and maybe a sequel that fully exploits it strenghts

@@zupremo9141 The Outer Worlds also was released two times and that game isn't quite popular despite being made by the same developer of Fallout New Vegas, and with that there's also quite other examples as well
@@matijota8728 That game sold 5m+ copies even though it was a very niche game. I like RPG and even i think that was too high because that game have bad combat, writing, character designs and a very mediocre comedy.
Sleeping Dogs' open world is so immersive and lived-in. I absolutely loved this game. Would buy a sequel in a heartbeat.
Sleeping Dogs, one of my favorite games. I remember buying this game about a week after it came out. It came to my attention because of its story resembling that of a mix of Hong Kong action films and The Departed.
If I'm not mistaken the Departed was actually based off of a Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs
Also the very beginning of that year of the snake dlc where you're dressed as a PO officer and signing tickets while on "probation" was a reverence to Jackie Chan's Police Story 2
I don't know what Square Enix was thinking. They would have been printing money if they just greenlit a Sleeping Dogs 2, I have no clue why they thought an mmo game was the better idea.
This is one of those games I’ve owned and had sitting in my steam library for years and just never bothered to play for more than 20 minutes. I finally gave it a proper chance just last year and was blown away. Definitely a game of its time, when the point of making a game was to provide a fun and engaging experience for your players instead of making infinite money.

This game taught me real brotherhood where other games could never do. Also that part where Wei can sing Air Supply notes is soo gooood 😂
My coworker brought this game up and asked if I’ve ever played it. I replied no, stating I’ve seen it advertised on Xbox game pass but always wondered what it was. Bought the game for $3 recently since his recommendation. It’s been a while since I’ve been invested in game like this. So underrated

Right someone @ me saying it’s underrated cause their teenage friends don’t know about the game and all they play is COD and fortnite, this game stoped being underrated when hitting the comment section under every other sleeping dogs vid said the game was “criminally underrated”

This game was more so Underappreciated on launch then it ever was underrated. Now these days people are starting to appreciate it more.

Hopefully a studio will buy the rights for the game so we can get a sequel only problem is half the games nowadays suck or are full of microtransaction so I'd be questionable to get it

Man i love this game so much. The storyline was really good and the fighting in this game was just fantastic
If I remember Sleeping Dogs is sort of the bastard third entry in the True Crime series. There was LA and NY and Hong Kong was going to be the 3rd entry but the series died and HOng Kong was reworked into Sleeping Dogs
The publisher didn't think it would make a good profit and pulled the plug. But square I believe picked it up seeing the potential and gave them free reign over the project. It was rebranded again to sleeping dogs
It's never too late for a sequel!
Square Enix is Japanese , which means they’ll mostly avoid crimes in video games , plus the original creator company disbanded
i’m glad i’m not the only one who really enjoyed this game. i’m currently replaying the definitive edition they made right now.
Sleeping dogs is my thhird favorite game in the open world crime genre (the first 2 being Sr1 and Sr2) it reminds me it feels like if Troy from Saints Row was a playable character
Absolutely love this game. I had kept eyeing it at GameStop but kept putting it off, but was SO glad I finally bit the bullet and bought it. Legitimately regretted not getting it sooner than I did 😅
I got this over GTA V for christmas. My granny said she thought of me instantly when she saw the cover. I beat this at least three times and bought the DLC.
I picked up and played Sleeping Dogs on Steam before I finally tried GTAV. It blew me away how disappointing GTA was after the hype around it and the expectations I got from "the Chinese knockoff". If they made a sequel to a comparable standard as RDR2 it would be an easy day 1 purchase from me.
Play The warriers By Rockstar feels alot like Sleeping dogs in Terms of hand to hand.
I liked this game a lot I’d say it’s a 8/10 HOWEVER most of the police missions either dragged or were boring as ever, I would forget Shen was a cop pretty regularly. I think it would have been better if they either focused more on the undercover aspect, or drop it entirely and have it entirely be about being a Triad
Hong Kong looks so futuristic it's insane I always think sleeping dogs is set in the city it's like a gta style game cyberpunk 2077 looking game

@@devilishfrost4795 My guy, Sleeping Dogs originally released on PS3 & was then remastered for PS4. So a 2nd remaster on PS5 would be redundant & unnecessary. Why remaster a game that was already remastered in the 1st place? If the game isnt available on PS5, then I would argue that the PS4 remaster should be PORTED to PS5. A PORT I would definitely agree on, but not a 2nd remaster. A remaster of another remaster doesn't make sense at all. At that point, I would rather see an all new sequel (Sleeping Dogs 2) with next generation visuals, it would be a much better use of the developers time & resources.......

Corollary: the dozens of country music songs sung about the ‘unsung rodeo clown.’ I haven’t played Sleeping Dogs but the setting looks evocative; I want to run around and see more of the locations
It's not underrated anymore because if many people throw the term underrated at it, it no longer becomes underrated. It's an amazing game though!

Any other recent sleeping dogs video of the past couple years looking back on this game the comments section majority talk about how the game is underrated it wasn’t even underrated back then at launch radbrad played it got millions of views people knew about it and was talked about then

Fun fact though when sleeping dogs was first being developed it was suppose to be a sequel to the True crime series which is another good game series.
I remember when I was playing this game I had a moment where I went to the store and briefly forgot which side of the road I had to drive on.
So I guess the game was pretty engrossing, lol.

A game this good not having a sequel, a show or a movie (One with Donnie Yen was supposed to happen but idk what happened) is definitely underrated. Its like alot of ppl know about it but not enough that we haven’t gotten anything new with it
This game fighting system motivated me to learn jeet kune do. I don't think that besides Krav Maga there is a single martial art that utilises so well the environment.

Jeez I played it on pc for a week before I blew my pc up, then I played it on ps4, had an absolute blast. It’s a fantastic game, the voice acting is super and the action is on point. I bought it super cheap, but yeah it’s quality. Would love a sequel. Also apparently it was supposed to be an entry in the true crime series
My favourite game of all time. I saved up for ages working as a simple candy maker to be able to live in HongKong for a month, simply because I wanted to experience the real thing

it was supposed to be part of the true crime series but like what you mentioned it got canned by activision, and eventually picked up by square-enix , and there was supposed to be a movie based on the game , but no news on that either
I got the demo version on Xbox 360 and I would play the same missions over and over again. I begged my mom to get it for me, every game I play now I compare its combat to sleeping dogs.
The only thing it would get a ding for is the gunplay but it's such a minor aspect of the whole game. You could argue the driving is a little stiff but it's definitely serviceable especially for it's time.

@@TheeCambion I agree, but I tend to like any game that has a good story, and enjoy the nuances of the game play. The cars are Ok in sleeping dogs, the map is limited, and very well optimized. Past some buildings there is just blank space, most don't have rooftops either. But I loved the environmental combat, story, brutality, and the shifting loyalties within Wei's mind.
@@mrppman6188 Most def, I played the true crime games before sleeping dogs. A sequel that integrates some of those games mechanics and sleeping dogs combat and story beats would be so cool.... sad it probably won't happen.

I never bought or played this game however whenever I've heard anyone mention it it has only been with high praise. So underrated is not a word I would use to describe it either.
Its just sad that we don't have any alternate open world game like Sleeping Dogs could've been to GTA.

I get suggested a Sleeping Dawgs vid, I watch, like, and subscribe on a Sleeping Dawgs vid. I love this game and Wei is, in my ever so humble opinion, one of the great male video game protagonists.
My landlord, whom I couldn't stand, lent me this on PS3. We got along after that. Therefore, this game is also magic, obviously.
They could have made a Sleeping Dogs that takes place in Thailand or Vietnam with a new protagonist.

Not only they cancelled Sleeping Dogs 2 which was in development but they did same thing with Final Fantasy XV and they cancelled half of the upcoming DLCs which could have affected the game's ending and instead they put the DLCs they cancelled in some dumb novel.
I enjoyed both Final Fantasy XV and Sleeping Dogs to the point that I Platinumed them both and it's kinda sad that Square Enix cancelled their sequel or DLC or whatever.
I use the ipman suit because he has ipman face breaker Punch Wu Kong suit is great aswell the once was Warriors suit looks great

It really is a mystery how Wei is still a cop after all the wanton murder he commits. Ig it's better than yakuza having absolutely brutal finishers and pretending your enemies are just unconscious. Great video though

pausing the video at the start before i even watch the video. its considered underrated is because many at the time clowned on the game for having clunky drive controls, wanna-be-gta-clone and the fight mechanics were basic compared to other games and the gun play was considered retarded compared to other shooters.
but you are right, those of us who disregarded those sentiment fondly remember this game for various reasons. loved the soundtrack, the story and the chibi united front community car was a free update along with the rey mysterio jr mask was/is amazebawls. sigh. i cant find that united front chibi car though in the ecbok definitive edition to save muh life.

I'm going back and replay the game again as I need that very achievement so I'll be going back tomorrow the sequel was planned but this game didn't sell enough to warrant a sequel because of sales United front was desolved not long after poor sales of sleeping dogs United front also made the prequel series true crimes of LA and the sequel sleeping dogs was originally supposed to be a true crimes sequel called true crimes Hong Kong but eventually sleeping dogs was set as a new entry alternative to GTA and set far away and not associated with the true crimes series sales for the game was poor so a sequel was cancelled

I played through this 3 or 4 times.
I've never finished this game. I've bought it 3 times over the years, gave it 3 chances and never finished it. It's a good game but I don't like the writing. There a big disconnect between the main plot and the side content. Heck, there's a disconnect between the main plot and the gameplay! That's why I couldn't finish it.

Yes you must also complete all the police cases to advance the plot. They are not really side missions even tho they seem like one.

I remember this game fondly. I have to admit I never finished it because other games took up the majority of my time atm.
The world-building, the voice-acting, the story... it was all top notch.
I remember watching a short documentary about how the dev team was hell-bent on doing their due dilligence on HK culture and triad culture, and went to HK and totally immersed themselves. They read books and old newspaper articles, convinced a retired detective to show them some declassified case files, and even got in touch with some shady folks who hooked them up with a couple of retired triad guys who were willing to be interviewed. And all this effort by the dev team definitely shows.
If you don't think Sleeping Dogs is underrated, just go rewatch Angry Joe's review of the game. The way the game is perceived today varies greatly from how the game was originally reviewed upon release.
