What none of these servers are mentioning is that, in the US, if your tips do not cover minimum wage, the restaurant is required to make up the difference. So if you don’t tip, your server is not making only $2-3 an hour. That isn’t to say you shouldn’t tip because federal minimum wage is definitely not enough to live on, but it’s disingenuous to act like servers will come home with checks that amount to $2 an hour. Some businesses don’t do this and hopefully their servers know that is super illegal. Not to mention, the people who support tipping most are servers and bartenders who make much much more than the average service worker because of tips.
If you’re a business owner and you cannot pay your employees a fair wage YOU cannot be in business, YOU cannot afford to have them. Tips are a *gratuity* not an obligation.
We can try to speak out against the companies but realistically, you will be retaliated against. You should know that. Us regular citizens get fired for demanding what's right.
No forreal!! I'm a tipper but not on wild stuff like drive thru.. but it's trips me out fired up some of these folks are....at the wrong people😂....at the end of the day your employer who you chose to work for is who needs to ensure you're paid
@@Porter5habazz. It still isn’t on the customer to be responsible for tipping. Tipping is supposed to be when it’s amazing service not a requirement. If workers don’t ban together for a change things won’t change. Go after your boss.
Tip culture is ridiculous. I have started ignoring it unless I get a service. Shop for my groceries yes, drive through no. Waitress yes. Coffee shop no. I don’t care what your feelings are. I’m also quitting donating to charities at the register. If I get bad service you get a bad tip. I can afford to tip but if you don’t deserve it you won’t get it. Not from me.
Believe it or not it actually has in many many states!! For example in California *servers ect. get minimum wage*. . . And if they’re not it’s being done illegally !!! There are only a few states left where worker’s can legally be paid below minimum wage and in every state where the worker gets below the minimum tip pooling is illegal (so what that bartender was saying was 100% bullshit OR being done illegally!!)
Some restaurants have tried no tip, and they adjusted the menu prices. Both customers and waitstaff hated it. Waitstaff got paid more with tips!! I know a local (to me) did try it. Was all over the news! I'm lost at paying bartender/ bussboy part?!? Never heard of that! 😮 I agree it's gotten crazy!!
My local UPS store has card readers that automatically ask for a tip for some reason, and every time i have paid, the workers always put their finger on the X button and exit out of the tip menu for you before you can even think about tipping. Even workers know this is ridiculous.
It comes built in to the software that many places use now, they can't remove it. Most of these places should not be accepting tips just because it exists in the software. 😊
My favourite is how often food service people say “if you can’t tip you don’t deserve to eat out period!” And I say, “haha, good, let’s all take your advice and on behalf of you we won’t go to your establishment and let’s watch it go out of business and then you or your coworkers will be out of a job.”
as an european, the first girl baffles me. wym you expect a random person to have the "obligation" to pay your salary???????? we tip here a few euros when we're hella satisfied with the service. but demanding money from someone other than your boss???????? istg the entitlement edit: nvm, yall just delulu atp. you shouldnt be blaming the costumers, either change jobs or rebel on your bosses bcs its no one's business to pay your salaries. maybe im too european but this makes zero sense how yall got your minds twisted up. boundaryless capitalism be like
I mean look at the state our country is in…as an American I don’t think enough people are holding themselves accountable for the things they want in life and are just fine to put off the problem onto someone else…
@@randomlyswatching9481 What the hell did you even say? Like I am trying to understand, because you wrote it in english, but your response is to a hallucination.
What? There are so many people in the United States who are job hunting right now (including me) People will look at you accept your aplication and then literally not respond, say you aren’t “qualified” even if they say no qualifications, and bills need to be PAID SO YES people deal with things like this here because we have things to do. Yes we have government programs that help with this, but they all come with certian conditions. Some people can’t get benefits because they make too much money at their current job, even IF it isn’t enough to LIVE. Not survive. LIVE. Do I think workers should become entitled? No. But to insult American workers just trying to make a living is something I will not fucking allow especially from someone who doesn’t even LIVE HERE or have to deal with the horrid economy in this country. People hold out for their families and friends here, or the hope of something more. That’s it. Why the HELL do you guys think Americans don’t travel as much as other countries as a whole. We don’t have the funds. All our money, time, energy is for trying to survive. It seems to be something that a lot of other countries MISS because they are too busy talking about the citizens here, and our government to remember the fact that Americans do indeed have financial problems on a day to day basis.
I hate percentage based tipping. A 15% tip used to be an acceptable amount but now it's seen as "cheap" and 20% is the new expectation. Why is the price of my food the expectation of what I should tip? If I order a more expensive meal as a treat I'm supposed to leave a higher tip JUST BECAUSE?! Bringing me a $20 plate of chicken pasta is the same amount of work as bringing me a plate of $100 steak. Tipping culture is out of hand.
I really do hate tips, it causes aggression and I even admit to being a little aggressive towards protecting tips I used to get as a housekeeper, I did not want to split with any other housekeeper unless they worked with me. That was back then and now? Abolish it, people are getting too greedy and rude about it.
No other country does this, why does an employee have to act like a freelancer? Your boss fucking pays you. This should be illegal! Do you not have labor laws or is ultraliberalism a national religion?
@flora . it's liberals who are responsible for pro-labor laws. But tip policy and service wages are usually governed by state laws. So a lot of service workers in red states get screwed.
I agree, especially when the screen prompts for a tip after something as simple as ordering takeout. You didnt bus a table. I’m not paying you extra money for telling me my food is $15. I’ll round up the extra cents to the next whole dollar after tax. Thats the tip.
@@kookootrix1978US liberalism is different from EU liberalism 😊 in Europe the neoliberals are usually more pro-free market and pro-deregulating social regulations/less safety net/small government (more right wing)In the US the liberals are the leftwing lol. So I think that causes a bit of confusion sometimes
As an American and someone who was a server once upon a time and a delivery driver….. I decided to no longer work at establishments where I have to rely on tips. It wouldn’t be a thing if we started demanding these jobs pay employees regular wages….. I would love for us to do away with this system.
100%, but without the government prioritizing their citizens over money, mega corps will win every single time and we will not make enough to more than survive
Your mind would be blown in Australia. We typically don’t even tip in restaurants unless it’s a big event or holiday season. Unless you’re in a higher class restaurant, they won’t even give an option for a tip, they just punch your order straight into the register and move on with their day. Price displayed= price paid, including tax. It’s only American companies like Uber who are pushing for tips over here and we hate it. Pay people. If you can’t afford to pay your employees properly, you can’t run a business.
As someone who is a server: Tipping should be based off service 100% if it's good tip, not good, don't tip. There are people who genuinely cannot tip, and it is 100 percent ok tips are not mandatory.
As far as I’m concerned, tipping is optional. They made a choice to work at that job. If I am at a restaurant and the waitress/waiter is excellent, I will tip. I said what I said.
Yep, but if you don't tip they make you feel, like you just killed puppy, at least what i heard or saw online. I'm from central Europe and here is really common to give tip when you feel like the service was great, and if you don't tip, no one judge you.
IDGAF what anyone says customers are not obligated to tip. It’s is not our responsibility to pay these ppl. It’s called GRATUITY for a reason… to express gratitude for GOOD service. Service workers should take all that energy they give ppl to bully a tip out of them and start demanding better pay from their employers.
Bet you would still complain if you went to your favorite restaurant and it took 5 times as long to get your food because their were no people who wanted to do that job anymore. Yet you go out to eat knowing servers only get paid a couple dollars an hour and need tips to survive. If you feel the way you do then put your money where your mouth is and stop going to sit down establishments. You protest the system instead of telling some low income server too. Hypocrisy makes me sick.
@ ummm I think the hypocrisy is employee knowing servers need money to live and barely paying them them… but yall are mad at paying customers. So we gave to pay for the food and the service separately? That makes no damn sense. If servers didn’t want to work anymore restaurants would certainly survive 🤣 like I said customers are not responsible for paying servers we don’t employ them we are the reason they are employed.
@@tiffanystout.if everyone did that then the same low income workers would be out of a job because trust me nobody or barely anybody wants to pay an additional fee ontop of what’s probably a treat. Imagine buying a gift for someone then paying the gift wrapper 20 extra dollars for putting paper on a box which is literally their job description . It’s stupid and it’s not customers business that the employers are dirty and not paying workers.
@Solo-drips Low income workers would no doubt find another job elsewhere. However, the luxury and quality experience of eating out would be gone. If you would find any people willing to work for 2 dollars an hour with no tips, they wouldn't be the type of person you'd want to serve you. However, we both know this speculation goes no where and nothing is changing anytime soon. Go ahead and don't tip. But don't pretend it's because you care anything about the workers you're deliberately screwing over. We all know you and your type of narcisstic, selfish people who are just greedy and like getting something (in this case table service) for nothing. But servers will remember you so best not go to the same establishment twice. Lol
@ never said I care or don’t care about the workers I also never said I don’t tip! Hope off your soap box and read. I said no one is OBLIGATED to Pay severs but their employers, so it’s not the customers responsibility to be concerned about what they make or don’t make. A tip is not supposed to be a living wage a pay check is. Why the hell wouldn’t service be included in the price of your meal?! In what other industry are customers obliged to pay the employees because wages aren’t livable? By your logic we would tip retail employees as well. The problem is ppl that can’t check their own emotions and use logic.
I tip delivery people and at sit diwn restaurants but the arbitrary 20% is weird, because a cheap hamburger & a steak with lobster take the same amount of effort for the waiter/waitress to order and carry. More expensive food isn't heavier. Awkward doesn't bother me, I have no problem making eye contact and pressing no
Exactly. It should be time and service not the tab. When I waited tables a whole group of women ordered soup salad bred and drink and ran me crazy, but tipped me hardly anything. Someone ordered a more expensive platter and tips more but took leas effort. Why do they need to tip more on a higher item. It should be based in the work and time.
34:55 it’s not our jobs or place to pay for them, it’s not denying them a meal or a tank of gas, it’s not our obligation to pay them, and it’s not “taking money from servers”, it’s my money is not the servers money, it’s not our job to pay that companies employees
1000%. It's our money, not anybody else's. Nothing irks me more than when people claim money that's not theirs. I like to tip people who do their job well. I try to tip enough, but the point of tipping is that it's OPTIONAL. It's gratuity. No one is owed anything other than the price of the food/drinks/whatever. absolutely ludicrous
If people starts to not going out to the places they tip, that store will go bankrupt and the workers will lose the job. Just raise the price, that's it.
I remember I went to a poki bowl restaurant. I went to the cashier and she was young and told me I could order on the kiosk. I told her I was paying cash and she got the nastiest attitude because she had to do her job. Like both elbows on the counter face in the palm of her hands and talking to me like a child. I hit that no tip button so fast and walked away. Man when I tell you I called my ma to calm me down 😅
@alyssaf4095 and I do. If I get horrible service, I'm not tipping. It's not mandatory. Tipping is for good services rendered. How are you going to tell me not to go out? So a horrible, disrespectful waitress or waiter deserves a tip? No. Like I said in my original comment be mad
@ no, we’re talking about just Service in general. Bad service that’s 10%. I can see that you’ve definitely not been in the service industry. You would feel different if you had experienced it. Also, I wouldn’t know about being a terrible server or bartender because I was good. We’re are talking about not weaponizing tipping because you are not in support of tipping culture. Pay attention. No one is telling you to tip a crappy server 25%. But not tipping at all you can exit and stay gone. Take yourself to McDonald’s where you don’t tip because it’s fast food.
@alyssaf4095 I was in the service industry, and I feel the same. I tip very well for good service. Not tipping is not weaponizing. As I stated, it's for services rendered, and you should have known when i wrote be mad, whatever you write wasn't going to change my mind. Also, next time, please don't assume someone's past by their opinion. Have a wonderful night. we can agree to disagree
I’m a hair stylist and I do that too. My massage therapist refuses tips, and I really appreciate that about him. It’s nice to not feel like you have to overextend yourself just to get the guaranteed service.
27:29 that girl say "they're gonna be like the servers in Europe where they don't give a f about you" as an European who worked as a server in France, we care about our clients and we even adjust to their needs and those with their attitude so saying that we won't care is a lie, guess that girl never been to Europe to say things like that, plus we don't even get tips, tips doesn't even exist here PS: I don't know if it very comprehensible what I'm trying to say so...
I understood and agree 100%. I am especially angry about the girl from the bar who said "I need to know if you tip beforehand bc if not I am not gonna bother with good service for you" like what???? You are PLANNING on working sh*tty and ignoring me just bc I am not letting you force me to pay extra although no service has happened yet??? They have no work ethics and think only ppl with money are worth their time. The entitlement and dehumanization is baffling. Europe is a paradise when it comes to eating out in restaurants. Not bc of the different or non-existent tipping cultures but also bc most servers/waiters are rightfully so proud of what they are doing and they are amazing at it without the expectation of extra money. Makes it also more relaxed for the customers. Have a nice day 😊
Yes, tipping is out of control, I order to go online and 20% tips added to my total, and this is a take out, no option to opt outs, so I cancelled my order, and order from some where else.
It’s crazy that people are mad at us for not wanting to tip but not mad at restaurant owners for Being cheap and not paying their workers livable wages ages. If you can’t afford to pay your workers then maybe you shouldn’t have the business 🤷🏾♀️ just a thought.
I'm honestly so glad Argentina doesn't have that tipping culture because damn, Americans are crazy thinking I'm gonna tip every breath I take. You're not entitled to a tip, you are doing the basics of your job.
Ppl also need to realize that these "tablet tipping" things are card processors like Square. The program automatically asks for tipping bc it's a small business card processing service that you also have to pay a subscription for. So it's literally always optional bc the app is programmed that way. Just say no and move on. It's not forcing you, it's just an option programmed into a payment service.
Man this is why I'm afraid to dine out. When I want a nice meal, I only want to worry about being able to afford the food not food + "nice" tip since 10 isn't a good tip apparently. And anyone I've talked to about this says "just don't eat from out if you can't afford to" Like no Felicia, I can afford to eat from out, what I can't afford to do is compensate for horrible corporate practices by tipping an employee to make their wage livable every damn time! Especially self checkout counters like what y'all showing me the tip boxes for at self-checkout??? Like call me crazy but no, I am not going to compensate for corporate greed when I just want some tacos. That lady at 4:40 is so entitled too the way she's unironically telling us not to bitxh and moan while she's doing that very thing on the internet. Who looks at that attitude and says "wow I want to reward her for the outstanding service"???😭
And this right here is why people are not going out to eat anymore, so let’s see who wins this fight 😂 And to be clear when is 15% no longer good enough 🤔
I went to a festival with my grandmother once and we went up to a food stand. The iPad asked for a tip and my grandmother pressed no tip. When they took her order the lady yelled to the cook “NO TIP.” Like? What, so we assumed we get less food or something for that. That’s just crazy.
Festival food is expensive too. A burrito that came from a food truck during a baseball game cost me 18 dollars... then you go to the restaurant that the truck came from, and you pay 8-10, so yea... charging me an extra 8 dollars because I went to your truck... that's your tip
Yeah.... Tips are OPTIONAL and only if you feel like your server went above and beyond. I don't feel bad about not tipping and I feel no shame hitting zero on the screens. Especially when they hover over you to make sure you tip
I live in the UK, tipping is not really a big thing. Waiters still do a very good job and don't expect tips and if you do tip them, they appreciate it. Some places, although rare add an automatic service charge but you can ask for it to be taken off and nobody will throw a tantrum because they are being paid at minimum a livable wage.
Yeah, I love living in the UK. I work in the service industry and I’d never expect a customer to tip me (though it would be great if they did) as I’m already getting paid a decent amount. 🤷🏽♀️
Obviously tipping is never ever necessary, but I can’t be the only one who doesn’t see anything wrong with throwing an extra dollar or two in the cup when I get a slice of pizza or a coffee. If I’m in the mood, I have change, or I’m a regular at the location, I put a few dollars in the cup. To me, the problem arises when people expect the tip or try to guilt the customer into giving one. Not when the option to tip is presented .
34:00 - i agree but also whenever it comes up the majority of waiters say they dont want reform but tgen complain when every single customer doesn't tip? You cant have it both ways 😂
Yeah there have been restraunts doing no tip and both staff and customers *hated* it. I *think* (someone i knew did this), they don't report all tips to IRS. So no taxes paid in them. Just what the norm is so they don't get audited. Most servers said they wete paid more with regular tip.service vs hourly wage increase (plus prices up) , was all over our news when a, local to me, place did this.
So true. A lot of service workers don't want to get rid of tipping because they make way more than a regular wage. My brother is a bartender on the weekends and, on a good weekend, he'll make more than he would working a week at his 9-5 weekday job. I understand that tips work out well in those situations, but you can't turn around and complain about it at the same time. Can't be mad when people don't tip but also not want to change the system smh.
Nope none. It's more attitude from some servers and social pressure I think. The only time it would be mandatory is if it was automatically added to the bill, which happens occasionally for large parties.
I think the tip screens are getting WAY outta hand. Yes your job takes effort, yes it takes time. But I should not be responsible for part of your wage. I'm just a broke college student who needs to eat a cheap meal. Tipping should not be an obligation, but instead a gesture of appreciation. I used to work at panda Express and we weren't allowed to take tips. If someone offered, I'd have to ask if they'd like to *donate* it instead. But if the customer INSISTED, then I was allowed to take it. No where in the stores does it ask for a tip, no screens, no signs. The tips were given as like a small token of appreciation. When you're obligated to tip, it's just tiresome. JUST PAY YOUR WORKERS!!!!
I’m not American but if I ever go America, same! I am NOT getting ripped off just to pay someone else’s wages and I don’t care about the dumb culture either, I’ll pay for my food, enjoy it and leave xx
@@nurseii9018so just screw the workers iguess? I disagree with the tipping stuff in the usa too (glad my country is way different lol it's way better for everyone) but it's kind of shitty to me to "punish" the worker for the system, especially as a guest
@@emma0348 but you’re not punishing them nor are you responsible for them. As a guest AND someone who is not from America, don’t you think it would be kind of a waste to travel all the way to America which costs money, go out and eat which also costs money then spend even MORE money paying the workers yourself? If someone’s American and tipping then fair enough, it’s your country, your workers and YOUR system. But America is not MY country and as much as I *do* feel bad that the workers aren’t getting paid enough, as a guest/tourist I really don’t see how that’s my responsibility?
I had two incidents recently with tipping that set me off. The first I went into a gas station to buy a Coke and the lady at the cash register had a jar in front of her expecting me to tip her for doing her job. The second one I was looking for a graphic t-shirt on Amazon as I was about to check out a screen popped up asking how much of a tip did I want to leave. I immediately canceled the order so not only did they not get a tip but they also lost a order.
I tip very well when food is being brought to my table or delivered to my home. I don’t tip just for putting my pre-made items in a bag and ringing them up.
Agree with you! I only tip sit down restaurant, delivery and my nails. On a side note, when I was a server, I actually did have a guy who said “just so you know, I will NOT be tipping you” 😂
If I have exceptional service I tip, if I don't, I don't, those little screens with the tip amount don't phase me, I have no problem pressing no tip if its not a tipping situation
I've been working as a waitress/server for almost 2 years now and I've had tips from just change to $50 and personally I appreciate ANYTHING. And if I don't get a tip, as long as the customers are nice and we chit chat I don't mind not getting a tip. I don't make much hourly, and live off tips, buuuutttttt I don't expect a tip but as long as I'm giving my very best service the only thing I expect is decent human interaction lol. And I myself tip based on service and I think the better the service the better the tip should be BUT THATS ME But I really think service workers should just be paid a decent wage so no one is/feels pressured
In Australia tipping has never been a thing, servers get paid $25/$30 AUD per hour depending on their age… NOW they’ve started asking for tips and making me look bad when I tick no You get a decent wage, the service was bare minimum, you didn’t smile, make conversation and you had to correct my order to my allergy requirements, nearly killing me.. NO TIP
I work at a small business coffee shop, alone on shift. I am very personable with my customers and create good conversations with them to give them a welcoming experience every-time they come. I would say 98% of my customers do tip and I am extremely grateful. Although I do not expect a tip, because it is optional, not mandatory. I do feel dread when this particular customer comes with his whole family and he never tips. They always order 5 drinks, 3 different blended drinks with 5 shots of coffee in each frappe. I only have one blender in the stand and I also have other customers on the other window to take care of. It is time consuming having to wash the blender after every drink in a small hand sink. It takes me about 15 minutes to get all their drinks out, while worrying about the customers on the other side. That is the only time I get a little upset about someone not tipping and I think it’s fair to say.
As a former server that is really fair. I always made sure not to feel entitled to tips. But working hard to please the customer and their 4 family members (I worked at a bakery that was also a petting zoo) and not typically getting more than quarters or a dollar sucked on large orders. Plus my boss stole my tips. Keeping a $5 bill felt good. I get salty going out to eat and seeing 10$ or 20$ bills in the tip jar sometimes.
I feel the exact say way, as someone who understands that people may not be able to find jobs easily. But if you are getting mad that people aren't tipping, and then telling them to just not show up you're going to get what you're demanding.
I’m in the UK and I’ve rarely had rubbish service at the restaurants we go to. The tip is included in everything. When I come to the States, dual citizenship, I am blown away now by the ridiculous tipping malarkey! I’m not tipping for a cup of tea or coffee. It’s insane.
I’m from the UK and I just don’t tip nor have I been to a restaurant where the tip was included, I usually just go up to the till and I pay them the amount the food costs, no questions asked and everyone’s happy.
For the rest of this year and 2025 on, I'm not tipping for anything outside of sit down restaurants, delivery services or my occasional beauty maintenance.
Servers are still paid only $2.17 an hour. They rely on their tips. I won't tip someone for doing their job and making me a coffee I have paid for. Those people make minimum wage, at least.
As a server for over a year now I still don't completely understand the distress when a table doesn't tip. Sure, it can be a little disappointing but for me all that means is that I have 3 less dollars and need to work on my customer service. I'm switching professions anyways, so I won't have to worry about tips anymore, but I don't think I'll ever understand why people get so upset. However, shout out to the people who try to cash app servers their tip. It's the funniest thing ever to watch lol.
I don't really see anyone saying that lawmakers have a LOT of control on the issue where restaurans are concerned. The minimum wage should be the minimum wage period. We shouldn't be paying wait staff a disgustingly unliveable wage because we assume they'll get tips.
Why do ticktockers think it's ok to do their makeup when telling their story? Is it like smoking...you have to have something in your hand because you are nervous doing your story? Just so annoying.😮
It’s the latest schtick. Do your make-up while complaining on Tiktok or telling a story, whether it be true-crime of personal nature to the content-creator. They all have to copy each other, like how many of them hold the microphone in their hand while narrating the video. So annoying that no one can be original when making a video, but I digress.
I’m so sick of greedy people ruining it for the people who work hard for tips and appreciate a single fricken dollar. As a waitress, I make a living working 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. I’ve never really run into anyone who refused to tip or resented it, that I know of. I’m also just a good waitress who wants costumers to have a welcoming and pleasant experience. I’m also a legit waitress, I don’t work a counter
I have a friend that’s from Africa. When she just came to the US from Africa she started working at a Chinese restaurant because she didn’t speak enough English and she still hadn’t received her documents, but rent was due and she had to do something. Well I later found out that the owners kept all of the tips and paid a misery to the employees because most of them didn’t have their documents. This happens a lot here in Texas and I’m sure everywhere in the US. She didn’t last very long, and thankfully she got her documents and was able to find something better. But this is another dark side of the tipping culture.
It's absolutely insane how everyone in the comments is agreeing with this video. Where is your empathy? I'd love for tipping to be eliminated, but that needs to happen at a higher level (in the law) with livable minimum wages for EVERY job, and maybe even abolishing tipping after that. People should get paid the same no matter what kind of service they provide, and if the service is poor, they can be fired like at any other job. I go to a coffee shop and order a coffee at the counter and give them a buck or two as a tip. This is practically negligible for me, makes the coffee shop employee smile, and makes their and my day better. If I can't afford that, I can easily make coffee at home. If you can't afford to tip every time, just eat out a little bit less! This video was a total miss! And I love your other videos.
My opinion has always been this. If you get good service, and you can afford to, tip. If you can't afford to tip, don't go places that they "expect" a tip. If the service is bad, you don't have to tip, and you shouldn't. That's just my opinion, though. 🤷♀️
I hope that first lady is looking for a better job. One of my friends is looking for a better job as they are waitstaff at a Waffle House and they don't make much on most weekends.
I wrote a whole essay in this comment section, but I deleted it because I got upset! This tipping culture has gotten out of hand. Most of the time when you don't tip (not including a sit-down restaurants or bars or delivery services) or select no, they make you feel bad! If I order ahead via the app or from a kiosk I will not tip!!! Also, spitting in someone's food is a criminal offense.
I'm Brazilian and here this isn't a thing at all lmao. It's not a cultural thing out here, to the point that it doesn't even go through my head to tip when I dine out. No one talks about it as well.
8:54 You're getting a raw deal there. I'm not paying the bartender or the busser when they're making minimum wage, and half of the bussers steal your cash tips, anyway! If they get paid, it should be a small percentage of what YOU were tipped. Wtaf?
My state just had a vote on whether or not all food service staff should have to be paid minimum wage. If you the consumer don’t wanna bear the responsibility of paying your server’s wages, then you should have voted yes 🤗
The only sensible comment here. Why the fuck would companies pay service industry workers (one of the biggest industries) a proper income if they can legally get away with not doing it?
what kind of economy is that ? you cannot pay your workers so they are dependent on tipping ?! what is the customer paying the overpriced price for ? tipping should be a sign of extra-gratitude as in other countries
This is a difficult one for me. I think the tipping culture needs to change as the consumer is basically expected to pay the servers their wages. But on the other hand the servers need to be paid, since the greedy corp isn't trying to fulfill that role. It needs to be a systematic change at the top. You should do your job exceptionally well in ordered to be "tipped", but you also should get paid a living wage... I guess it is what it is. We work with what we got, but things need to change for the better!! 😊😇
This is such a great video, Busiswa! You are so correct. It's out of control. I always tip for sit down services and when service is above and beyond, but no, I am not tipping at the Starbuck's drive-thru for my coffee! They're nuts. It's also why I pay cash. No swiping means no iPad screens asking me for more money. I said what I said! 😆
Yep...cash is the way to go...I've been to some places where cash is a cheaper price than what is on menu price...it's sad to see they include it in but at least I'm not paying said price along with a tip question
"You're not some revolutionary!" Maybe not, but tipping and bosses exploiting tipping to stiff employees isn't something that is going to be taken down by the act of a single revolutionary person. We all have to jointly participate in bringing to bear whatever pressures we have available to make bosses change their practices.
I have been in the restaurant industry for about 5 years now working as a server and bartender. I usually don’t have an issue with people not tipping in the first place because I give good service no matter who is sat at my table. Obviously there is the expectation that some people are gonna stiff you even if you give them great service, but there is also the expectation that others will tip great for great service. If I was getting stiffed on every check and most people didn’t tip me, I would not work in this industry. If I wanted to make minimum wage I would work a different job, however in this industry if you’re good at your job (excellent even) you have the ability to make much more than a minimum wage employer would give you. Obviously it sucks when people don’t tip or treat me like a servant just to not tip, but I also know that on average I am still making more money than I would at a lot of minimum wage jobs. I have worked at many different restaurants for that exact reason. Some places people can’t afford to tip well or at all which is why they’re eating in a cheaper restaurant in the first place. Sometimes it really is just the common clientele and what people can afford to give you on top of what they pay for their bill. I definitely don’t agree with tipping a cashier, or a kiosk considering they are being paid a fair wage to do that job for you anyway, but sometimes I do feel guilted into doing it anyway. Most of the servers in this video are probably upset cause they work in a restaurant where people don’t tip on average and they don’t make minimum wage on average. I don’t necessarily think that’s the customers fault, but if you can afford to tip your server and they give you good service but you don’t, that’s a whole other story. The system is wack for sure but it’s definitely just capitalism giving more benefits to businesses than to consumers, which I unfortunately don’t see changing anytime soon.
27:19 in Germany the servers are always nice to you because they actually get paid and don’t survive on tips from paying customers. And most people still tip at least 10% in restaurants because they want to and not because they feel bad.
As an european this just confuses me. In Austria you only tip if the service was good.. but servers make a liveable wage here so they don't depend on it so..
I'm not tipping, especially when they act so entitled. I will usually leave the change as a tip, but not if the waiting staff has been a poopoohead. I'm not american, I don't live in america, but if I ever go, I am still not tipping.
I don’t care what anyone says; these waiters and waitresses are extremely ENTITLED!!! Thank goodness I live in the UK where tipping is optional and if the service isn’t good or they’re doing the bare minimum, I am NOT tipping! Period.
I'm Canadian 🇨🇦 and our family will go out of our way to avoid tipping ... We won't get food delivered because as soon as you pay for your food they still have their hand out begging for a tip
I`m from South Africa and I can tell you that tipping here is a bonus to you as a server . A tip is not something that is expected and it only applies to waiters in restaurants. Waiters in America need to take matters into their own hands and fix the real issue of them not getting paid enough instead of putting pressure on customers who are also just trying to get by
I'm french and I don't care if waiters are going above and beyond if they serve the food I'm fine, they don't even have to smile, I don't care they're at work, they don't have to entertain me xD
If I sit, I tip. I tip more for great service. I always give a good tip for delivery. If I just go pick something up, I usually give $2 flat for the cook or whoever. I’m not tipping 20% if I’m not getting service.
I only tip if I'm using a food service (like Uber, DD) or if I sit down for a meal. And I tip pretty well because I know how much our tip workers get paid. If you're a crap person (and I mean super bad, not having a bad day) or the food is horrible, not only do I not tip, I never come back lol
They fire you if you have them cover the difference.
Fucking THANK YOU. WE DONT GET PAYCHECKS
@@rissyrich7339girl that's sad

😮
If you’re a business owner and you cannot pay your employees a fair wage YOU cannot be in business, YOU cannot afford to have them. Tips are a *gratuity* not an obligation.
Bro, this is capitalism. It is totally okay to exploit people for your personal profit.
Thank you! You said it best!
This! American capitalism is highly dépendant on labour exploitation. It’s not ✌🏾 exceptionalism ✌🏾
They’re so mad at the customers but not the owners 😅
The legality of paying such a low wage and then forcing the funds out of people’s pockets should absolutely be revisited.
A sensible comment
Believe it or not it actually has in many many states!! For example in California *servers ect. get minimum wage*. . . And if they’re not it’s being done illegally !!! There are only a few states left where worker’s can legally be paid below minimum wage and in every state where the worker gets below the minimum tip pooling is illegal (so what that bartender was saying was 100% bullshit OR being done illegally!!)
@ been a server in MI for over 5 years and have never seen a pay check in my life. And I work for a chain..
😮
Some restaurants have tried no tip, and they adjusted the menu prices. Both customers and waitstaff hated it. Waitstaff got paid more with tips!! I know a local (to me) did try it. Was all over the news!
I'm lost at paying bartender/ bussboy part?!? Never heard of that! 😮
I agree it's gotten crazy!!
I'm not tipping McDonald's after I've already paid two times what it's even worth.
😮
When I worked in retail, I did that but then some people would say can I tip then I’ll be feeling so sad so I just asked if not, I just click out
Or they’ll say “just press no/x” cuz they know that’s bs and don’t want to pressure you to tip, those are good people
My favourite is how often food service people say “if you can’t tip you don’t deserve to eat out period!” And I say, “haha, good, let’s all take your advice and on behalf of you we won’t go to your establishment and let’s watch it go out of business and then you or your coworkers will be out of a job.”
We really should do this for 2025!!! Any business that forces tipping we shouldn’t go there for a year.
Yeah if people don’t come back to tip, then they’re not gonna make enough to live. Idk why they think it’s a threat to tell people not to come back
as an european, the first girl baffles me. wym you expect a random person to have the "obligation" to pay your salary???????? we tip here a few euros when we're hella satisfied with the service. but demanding money from someone other than your boss???????? istg the entitlement
edit: nvm, yall just delulu atp. you shouldnt be blaming the costumers, either change jobs or rebel on your bosses bcs its no one's business to pay your salaries. maybe im too european but this makes zero sense how yall got your minds twisted up. boundaryless capitalism be like

@@randomlyswatching9481 What the hell did you even say? Like I am trying to understand, because you wrote it in english, but your response is to a hallucination.
I agree but please stop saying “get another job.” A lot of people have trouble to even find ANY job at all. It’s never that simple.
What? There are so many people in the United States who are job hunting right now (including me)
People will look at you accept your aplication and then literally not respond, say you aren’t “qualified” even if they say no qualifications, and bills need to be PAID
SO YES people deal with things like this here because we have things to do.
‼️‼️
The US shouldn't be tipping in this day and age.
Just came back from Japan where culture dictates you don't tip. The food was soooo cheap so idk if that argument about food cost holds up.
That would be so great lol
Americans minds would be blown. I come from a country where tipping isn’t like this.
Same here in the UK, no need to tip if going out to a restaurant but of course you can if you’d like.
@@BusiswaG Australians for sure tip idk what they're on 😂 It's not mandatory but we have tipping culture here for sure.
I said what I said.
agreed
I feel the exact same way!

*PREACH*
Yup 💯
I said no one is OBLIGATED to
Pay severs but their employers, so it’s not the customers responsibility to be concerned about what they make or don’t make.
IMO tip shouldn't be a norm because your boss should pay you a living wage, not rely on the customer to pay their workers.
I'm an American myself and find our tip culture ridiculous. I agree with you 100%
I tip delivery people and at sit diwn restaurants but the arbitrary 20% is weird, because a cheap hamburger & a steak with lobster take the same amount of effort for the waiter/waitress to order and carry.
Just raise the price, that's it.
mandatory tip = fee
2$ wage = should be a crime
I remember I went to a poki bowl restaurant. I went to the cashier and she was young and told me I could order on the kiosk. I told her
I was paying cash and she got the nastiest attitude because she had to do her job. Like both elbows on the counter face in the palm of her hands and talking to me like a child. I hit that no tip button so fast and walked away. Man when I tell you I called my ma to calm me down 😅

Yes, tipping is out of control, I order to go online and 20% tips added to my total, and this is a take out, no option to opt outs, so I cancelled my order,
and order from some where else.
9:43 girl yea we choose to eat out just like YOU CHOOSE THAT JOB KNOWING THE PAY.
It’s crazy that people are mad at us for not wanting to tip but not mad at restaurant owners for
Being cheap and not paying their workers livable wages ages.
I HATE when people tell me what to do with MY money.
And this right here is why people are not going out to eat anymore, so let’s see who wins this fight 😂
And to be clear when is 15% no longer good enough 🤔
10% when I wad a kid
I got the asked the tip question at a self serve place, minimum 15%...She put a spoon in my cup...no...
I went to a festival with my grandmother once and we went up to a food stand. The iPad asked for a tip and my grandmother pressed no tip. When they took her order the lady yelled to the cook “NO TIP.” Like? What, so we assumed we get less food or something for that. That’s just crazy.
That's insane...😮😮😮
I HATE when they expect me to tip for something I had to do… why am I tipping at sweet frog if I went and made the yogurt myself.
I’m Indian, and would like to understand if tipping is “Mandatory”, meaning, is there a law which demands that you must tip a server/professional?
Nope none. It's more attitude from some servers and social pressure I think. The only time it would be mandatory is if it was automatically added to the bill, which happens occasionally for large parties.
Nope its just a ridiculous societal expectation and people get mad at you if you dont tip.
Just norms and expectations.
😂😂😂 im not tipping 18%-20%, and I'm still eating out, so...bloop.

The medspa I go to just started adding a tip option. I just paid $400 for a 15 minute service. No maaaaam 😂
I tip very well when food is being brought to my table or delivered to my home. I don’t tip just for putting my pre-made items in a bag and ringing them up.
I doordashed 1 single time and didnt do it a second since I only made $3 for that delivery. I wish more people had your mindset.
As you should
I've been working as a waitress/server for almost 2 years now and I've had tips from just change to $50 and personally I appreciate ANYTHING. And if I don't get a tip, as long as the customers are nice and we chit chat I don't mind not getting a tip. I don't make much hourly, and live off tips, buuuutttttt I don't expect a tip but as long as I'm giving my very best service the only thing I expect is decent human interaction lol.
And I myself tip based on service and I think the better the service the better the tip should be BUT THATS ME
But I really think service workers should just be paid a decent wage so no one is/feels pressured
Thank you for your service. ❤
@lymarie1974 thank you🥹❤️ I really love my job and all that comes with it
A COFFEE SHOP!!! wtf They are already soo expensive I’m definitely not tipping. I order tea so it’s no way I’m tipping for tea😂😂😂
Tipping is optional...period 🔥
Periodt
In Australia tipping has never been a thing, servers get paid $25/$30 AUD per hour depending on their age… NOW they’ve started asking for tips and making me look bad when I tick no
You get a decent wage, the service was bare minimum, you didn’t smile, make conversation and you had to correct my order to my allergy requirements, nearly killing me..
I get salty going out to eat and seeing 10$ or 20$ bills in the tip jar sometimes.
first girl, GET A NEW JOB!!!!!!
You said it before I could type it.
I feel the exact say way, as someone who understands that people may not be able to find jobs easily. But if you are getting mad that people aren't tipping, and then telling them to just not show up you're going to get what you're demanding.
The tip is crazy
@ 915 - it's not my responsibility to pay the entire staff as a patron. The server, bar tender, hostess, and the busser? How is this legal?
You need to earn the tip to get it 🤷🏻♀️ I worked in a restaurant and never expected anyone to tip me that’s their choice.
Very
It’s the latest schtick. Do your make-up while complaining on Tiktok or telling a story, whether it be true-crime of personal nature to the content-creator. They all have to copy each other, like how many of them hold the microphone in their hand while narrating the video. So annoying that no one can be original when making a video, but I digress.
I hadnt equated it to smoking, but as a smoker it makes sense.
I would always tip my hair stylist until he started getting lazy and I completely stopped. I tip for good service only
I’m so sick of greedy people ruining it for the people who work hard for tips and appreciate a single fricken dollar.
Your boss is greedy.
Let's go after the corporations not the people just working to live.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Staring into their eyes while peeling off the tape is my level of sass 😅 I love your commentary ❤
There needs to be regulations for serving workers. Politicians will do anything that doesn't help the lower class.
"I said what I said"
Lol I love the way you said that
27:19 in Germany the servers are always nice to you because they actually get paid and don’t survive on tips from paying customers. And most people still tip at least 10% in restaurants because they want to and not because they feel bad.
I am Italian. I once was tipped at work, I was so stunned and grateful BUT THAT WAS AN EXCEPTION if I expected that it wouldnt be so beautiful
I tip at sit down restaurants or delivery. That’s it. And for restaurants it’s based on service. I will not leave a good tip for bad service.
0:31 girl 😂 🤦🏾♀️
I only tip if I'm using a food service (like Uber, DD) or if I sit down for a meal. And I tip pretty well because I know how much our tip workers get paid. If you're a crap person (and I mean super bad, not having a bad day) or the food is horrible, not only do I not tip, I never come back lol
