Thank you for the review. I just have two notes: if you disable the GPU via device manager on muxless laptops, the GPU will run at "fail save" settings, sometimes that's 3D clocks. The best way to save power is to set the iGPU as default GPU using the included drivers.
The second note would be for the "thermal paste" on the VRMs and chokes: that's not thermal paste, it's thermal putty (aka liquid thermal pad). You've already reviewed it on LTT. Don't replace it with thermal paste because it's not thick enough!

Yeah, that thermal putty is actually not as good as higher end thermal pads. I'm sure everything is operating to the spec it's supposed to but if I ever had to open this to service it (would avoid due to the LM tho), I'd replace that putty with thermal pads. Just did that with a Zephyrus M as a matter of fact. Used 1.5mm thermal pads.

      Yeah this is big.
My biggest gripe with laptops (I use them a lot as I travel 24/7) is that unlike a desktop, there is no guarantee that you can sell it well after a year or two.
Often they'll be fucked after 2 years and sometimes entirely broken which sucks.
Because of this, it isn't rare to effectively pay 1-2k per year for the laptop even after it sells :(

7:04 u can do that in the “after burner” software asus includes. Switch to eco mode (disables dedicated gpu) n enable silent mode(caps 60fps). I use it all the time when I’m studying that the library and don’t have the power cord with me.
Also: I recommend to anyone who gets this laptop to check the subreddit n use the guide to disable boost mode which caps the cpu at 3.2ghz instead of letting it go to 4GHZ. I found it to be enough performance for my 2021 model n the cpu temps stick around 85C instead of 95C. idk if it’ll be needed for this new model but worth of checking out.

7:02 NEVER EVER disable the dGPU in device manager for these kinds of tests. This will get rid of the energy saving optimizations and will drastically decrease battery life. Instead, asign the game you want to run to the iGPU by using the graphics menu in Windows settings and verify that the dGPU is not running with task manager.

I use optimized settings on the 2021 G14 and can reach 10+ hrs of battery life. You should try disabling boosing, using low powered mode, etc and using about 40% brightness and the battery life basically doubles. It's really not much of a tradeoff. Also, those settings automatically change when plugged in, so you're never giving up on performance. Though, I would still recommend disabling boosting because its really helped tame the temps on the beefy 8-core cpu that constantly tries to reach upwards of 4.6 ghz.

Disabling the dedicated GPU in device manager does not stop it from consuming power. I've found that disabling it causes it to stay active always consuming a significant amount of power. That would explain why the battery life while gaming with the dedicated GPU disabled was so terrible on both the old and new model.

got my older model when I started going to school in person and its great. Perfect for cad work and light gaming while waiting for class. So glad I went with a 14 inch laptop instead of a 17 or 13, its the perfect balance. Now if I get a tablet and use it as a second screen I will be just as productive on the go as I am at home. I never realized how useful 2 screens are until I had to downgrade to one while at school. Doing cad work with one screen. Having to switch back and forth between assignment requirements and the cad program just adds annoyance. I think if you can find the last gen model with the 3060, go for that one instead of the expensive new model. Works just as great but without the 1k price jump.

I got the Best Buy model w/o the lid lighting - 6900HS, RX 6700S 8gb, popped a 32gb stick of ram in there for a total of 40gb. Easiest time I’ve ever had upgrading a laptop (documentation says max of 24gb ram but I’ve been running 40 for months now)
I use it for gaming, UE5 development, rendering UE5 scenes to video using sequencer, I used it to play VR in my hotel when I had to travel for work (USB-C to DP dongle has to be plugged in to the RH side of the laptop to use dedicated GPU), CAD modeling for 3D printing, Blender modeling etc. The thing is an absolute portable workhorse for me.

Keep in mind that if you upgrade the RAM, the RAM you can upgrade, you won't be running in dual channel mode, you'll be running in mixed channel mode. How big of an impact that would be to performance? I'd be curious to know how that would play out since half of the larger DIMM will be running in single channel.
Also, the little rubber nubbins are a welcome reprieve from stickers. Never had a problem getting them back in, in all of my years of opening laptops.

    • @KorokuGaming
      @KorokuGaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว

As of now, mixed channel mode isn't much to worry about, the first 16gb will run in dual channel and last 8gb will run in single, most applications seem to run great with no discernible performance loss.
I myself prefer larger desktop replacement laptops in which nothing needs to be soldered.

I'm really impressed with the cooling solutions that laptop manufacturers have designed. Acer had an interesting design they called "Liquidloop", which was a completely passive cpu cooler by way of routing a massive heat pipe around the entirety of the laptop device. It was utilized in the 2016 Acer Switch Alpha 12. I've been thinking of buying a broken one for the cpu cooler and reusing it in a Gateway laptop out of morbid curiosity.

Customer service has been a nightmare for them. ASUS have been unwilling to provide the cost to replace the display besides saying it could cost up to $2300 to fix the device. They say they cannot give anything more without seeing the device, even though they must know exactly how much a replacement display costs, the hours to repair and the hourly rate of their repair techs. So i bought the top of the line Lenovo lesion, mostly because I didn't want a gaming laptop, but I wanted a laptop that can game....if that makes sense, I wanted a laptop that works as a laptop because gaming laptops make compromises. I got the Lenovo Lesion 15.6 Ryzen 9 5900HX, 3050 ti, with the 4k panel; put a second 1tb nvme and swapped the 8gb sodimm for a 16gb stick and I'm super happy. Interesting is, when you stress a laptop on battery using youtube watching, you increase its modem speed, and the hardware speed to make sure, the 720p hd video runs smoothly. It affects browsing performance dramatically. Flight sim overspeed at low alt also speeds up, and enables cpu physx. Driver is avilable at nvidia. New feature, games become interesting. Rally games also seem to be increasing performance, I only tested it on phones, it works. Unfortunate, speedup won't affect hdd speed.

About the igpu.. so i have the 2021 model. I had the RTx 3060 disabled and played arma 3 around the clock, easily clocking in 4 hours. After upgrading to Windows 11, that time turned into 45 minutes.

Just got my fiance the g14 with the 6700s in it and it runs destiny 2 like a champ which she wanted so she could play with me on ps5. One cooling pad added and bam the thing is an absolute unit in performance for such a small laptop and not even being the 6800. Very impressed and can only imagine having the 6800 must feel glorious on the go.

I'm pretty sure that was thermal putty (thermal pad substitute) which is not as good as higher end thermal pads. I'm sure everything is operating to the spec it's supposed to but if I ever had to open this to service it (would avoid due to the LM tho), I'd replace that putty with thermal pads. Just did that with a Zephyrus M as a matter of fact. Used 1.5mm Gelid Extreme thermal pads.

It's wierd how Asus never gets the same recognition. Products like this one is built to last. Yes it does get warm. But few laptops including MacBook Pro come close to just good engineering. I know my g14 will outlast my MacBook Pro and trust me my VAIO still works..
