Had a Tortle Psi Warrior once who was very much a Jedi. Wielded a Sun Blade, which is just a lightsaber in essence, and took a 2 level dip into War Magic Wizard for not only the abilities, but also thematic spells like Charm Person, Thunderwave, Jump and Feather Fall, Protection for Evil and Good, etc. Telepathic gave me Detect Thoughts, and decent Wisdom made me good at Perception and Insight. I loved him. Nobody expects the turtle man to go sicko mode.
you know there's something fitting about "Samurai" being what the title got mixed up with, considering how much Kurosawa's samurai movies influenced George Lucas/the Jedi.
funilly enough i played a psi warrior yesterday for the first time, the ability to move allies out of harms way proved to be incredibly useful for saving partymembers that had been surrounded, like our ranger was, I moved them to a safe space where they could get on higher ground to pepper the enemy with arrows, meanwhile i was also reducing the damage they took when they were surounded by giant rats
It's great. Throw in the telekinetic feat for mage hand and a free bonus action 5ft push or pull every round, and you've got one hell of a battlefield controller.
Might be fun to create a Psi Warrior goblin in order to resemble Yoda, and then completely ignore all Star Wars references.... just to annoy the table. Bonus points if you can pull off pretending that you've never seen any Star Wars films/shows.
Made a dhampir psi warrior, so I had natural spiderclimb, so I would be just literally standing on rooftops upside down throwing debris at enemies and pelting them with arrows, or wallrunning like crazy with 45 ft of movement battling using two longswords to destroy any range enemies that thought they could get away, plus just the unique little symmetry I had with my cleric who had spirit guardians where since they were willing I could literally throw them around causing more damage, absolutely my fav fighter sub-class
Dhampir monk archers are fun too when they run towards you to stop you from shooting at them. Thinking that they can catch you unaware's only for you to then end up munching on them. 🤣🤣🤣 That bite is also only getting better in 2024 too.
I went down a more..... Warhammer 40K route with this subclass, Played a Dhampir, and made it so he consumed psychic energy as part of it, gave him a Glaive and it being a more modern setting, it was a Chainsaw Glaive. had a ton of fun looking like a Night Lord, pitch black eyes, pale white skin and teeth that would make a shark blush. Ah good times.
The psi-warrior does get double their proficiency bonus of psionic energy dice. At least the psi-warrior does in TCoE 5e (2014). On a different note. I was thinking of making a psi-warrior modeled after a Mass Effect biotic.
It sort of still does in the 2024 PHB except it's done by fighter level; the scaling's the same for a level 20 Fighter but now you will lose some if you mutliclass.
I went one of these, took the interception fighting style, and Gift of the Metallic Dragon feat in a one shot. I managed to piss off my DM in the first combat encounter, which is a new record for me 😂.
This subclass does hit the flavor mark of a jedi themed character. I'm also highly inclined to suggest Bladesinger Wizards too! So many spells hit that Force User feel: Lightsaber? True Strike (Probably should still get that Sunblade though) Mental Manipulation? Charm Person, Charm Monster, Detect Thoughts, Suggestion, Dominate Person, Dominate Monster, Mass Suggestion, Modify Memory Mental Protections? Intellect Fortress, Mind Blank Precognition or Force Sensing? Clairvoyance, Contact Other Plane, Divination, Augury, Foresight, Detect Magic, Arcane Eye, Locate Creature, Locate Object Telepathy? Sending, Message, Detect Thoughts, Telepathic Bond, Telepathy Force Protection? Blade Ward, Mage Armor, Shield, Absorb Elements, Wall of Force. Song of Defense. Force Movement? Haste, Jump, Longstrider, Expeditious Retreat, Kinetic Jaunt. Bladesong. Telekenisis? Telekenisis, Catapult, Levitate, Hold Person, Hold Monster, Animate Objects (2014), Bigby's Hand, Thunderwave, Shatter, Pulse Wave, Reverse Gravity. The Telekinetic (Feat). Clone? Simulacrum Sith Lightning? Witch Bolt, Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning You could even flavor your spellbook into something like a bound book of scrolls like the Sacred Jedi Texts- or if you could use a magic item a Spellshard (A common magic item) into a Holocron. The Lightsaber would be a Sunblade, though I understand those can be kinda hard to get so a homebrew weapon that simply deals Radiant Damage instad of its normal type would be fine too, that's probably a Common tier item since Pact of the Blade Warlocks get that at level 1 now and a cantrip is making that happen at level 1 too, chat with your DM :D
My problem with bladesinging is the one-handed sword prohibition. The proficiency in a single one-handed melee weapon is fine, you can remedy that, but the fact that you lose bladesong if you attack with two hands (two-handed or versatile) is brutal. Bladesingers are not Jedi even if they can emulate them. You are stuck in a more swashbuckler style of fighting when attacking with your weapon. And being a full wizard, why would you? Nat 20s always hit, even if you have an AC of 28. And you still have a wizard's hit points die. My favorite jedi is still the battle smith artificer. Complete with "droid" sidekick.
Blood hunter mutant also pairs well with any of the suggestions since some of their mutant formulas can increase STR or INT even higher. Alternatively ghost slayer can make a weapon glow with radiant energy and deal radiant damage. (I'm pretty sure that sun blade deal fire damage though so mutant using fire should be very much able to make a sunblade/lightsaber) As for the whole hurting yourself thing not helping race can help with that. (Heroism gives temp hp and or we can play as a shifter)
This subclass looks and sounds awesome, and I can see myself running it with a two-weapon or quarterstaff build for a campaign or two. Also, for once, the Level 20 capstone ability doesn't suck and instead complements the previous skills to a tee.
I used this very subclass for a boss fight when DMing for my friends. 18 levels in Psi Warrior Fighter with legendary actions. They loved the fight and also that it had two phases too!
If you're using 24 rules, take the Guide background for the Shillelagh cantrip. But set the casting ability to Intelligence. Now you're using INT for both your Psi abilities and your weapon. For your lvl1 spell, consider the new version of Jump for extra Jedi feel.
I've seen a Psi Warrior be played in a game of Space 5e, and the character is basically a Jedi with laser axes. Also, this works well with a Giff gunfighter or a Gith, given their powers are psionic.
Correction: the Psi Warrior does get twice your proficiency bonus amount of psionic dice. Was it the short rest recovery you wanted to change? Once again, WOTC overvalues certain abilities. Like Arcane Shot compared to Battle Manuevers. And here Psi dice compared to superiority dice. Because Psi dice do more "magical" things than battle manuevers, they felt they needed to limit them more. But the mechanics of both abilities are the same. Protective Field is the same as Parry, except the die is bigger on Parry, and you get all your superiority dice back on a short rest. Psionic strike is just a damage booster, like most of the battle maneuvers. Smaller die, less opportunity. Telekinetic movement is better than most maneuvers as far as moving large or smaller objects, but several maneuvers allow you to move allies out of harm's way. The difference is if you are moving an ally across a hazard or out of a pit, etc. So yeah, that ONE is better, but is it so much better that it needs to stunt its recovery? The single psi dice you get back on short rest is frankly insulting. Next the 7th level abilities. Psi-powered leap is similar to step of the wind or the jump spell or the falcon wildheart feature. Fly double speed to the end of your turn is pretty cool and useful. And telekinetic thrust is either the tripping attack or shoving attack maneuvers. The flavor is great, but the benefit isn't any greater than a first level spell or a battle maneuver. The rest of their abilities are pretty great, shoring up mental defense, giving group half cover, and ultimately telekinesis at level 18. And it is around here that you'll finally be able to use most of your abilities without running out of psi dice. The other psi martial class, the soulknife, doesn't rely on their psi dice for extra damage and thus can conserve their psi dice for those cool features like improving their aim or succeed on a skill check. Later they can turn invisible and stun on a successful sneak attack, but that's way down the line. I get why they made psi dice uniform over different classes, but the psi warror NEEDS his psi dice more than the Soulknife to do decent damage. To quote Luthor from Mission Impossible (Ving Rhames): "I just don't know, man, I just_don't_know."
Worth noting, Psi Warriors do have an ability to generate a die with a bonus action, and that ability does function on a short rest. So while it's not perfect, they don't completely cripple you. I think it's also less that they over value what it can do and more just that you start your day with more of them as early as 5th Level. A battlemaster will only have 4 at 5th level, but a Psi Warrior will have 6. Then the Battlemaster gets to 5, but then the Psi Warrior gets to 8. And so on, and so forth. I do agree with you that they should come back on short rests, but I also understand why they don't.
I agree with Eric's take on this. As a current level 8 Psi Warrior myself, I think the short rest pis dice regain would be great to have. Direct comparing the Battle Master and Psi Warrior at this level, the BM gets 5 maneuvers with 5 dice, while the PW technically has only 4 abilities since Telekinetic Thrust is an upgrade of Psionic Strike and 6 dice. The value comes from the short rest regain. Say the party short rests twice in one day; if both fighters expend their dice, the PW will have spent a total of 8 dice while the BM expends a whopping 15. And imagine taking the Martial Adept and Fighting Initiate (Superior Technique) feats! That's a MASSIVE 21 dice regained total in this thought experiment. Even though you might not pick those feats, there's no outpacing the BM in resource replenishment, even at 20th level. If the PW short rest Psi dice regain was equal to half PB rounded down, that would still be better than what it has now.
I've been playing a Psi Warrior for the last two...no, four years. (Great googilly-moogily, time has no meaning to an ADHD brain.) I took the telekinetic feat to get an invisible, at-will Mage Hand which freed my psi dice up for combat. I have used psionics to smear dungeon bosses across rough stone until they were nothing but a grease stain. I have boosted the dwarf cleric's movement speed with my mind to get everyone in the party away from faster enemies. I have launched myself through the air 60 feet in a massive Underdark cavern to rain arrow fire down on some very surprised goblins and bugbears. Note: don't do this without a Twilight Cleric slapping 300 feet of Darkvision on you first. Trust me, you want to see them before they see you. I'm just not sure if I should go all the way to level 20 to get the Telekinesis spell and four attacks per turn, or take my last three levels to multi-class into Soulknife Rogue for the psi-blades. Either way, this sub-class is amazing and can't be countered by Silence or Dispel Magic. Psionics, baby! (Why yes I did romance the Emperor. Not intentionally, mind you, but letting a guy down easy rarely works, even in video games.) Okay, now please do Arcane Archer, if for no other reason than to outline how you would FIX. IT.
been waiting for this one since season one! and it was perfect, the jokes, the edits, the being terrified of Disney lawyers.... all of it is so spot on! well done man, well done.
so as mentioned by others, two corrections one, you get dice equal to twice proficiency, although in the 2024 version it has its own table, you still start with 4 dice and end with 12 which is a lot. the second is about bulwark of force, it gives you half cover, which means that you do benefit from a +2 to AC, but also to your Dex saves which is awesome.
Blindfighting is surprisingly useful. My Paladin has it and it trivialised a fight with some Basalisks and also kinda removed a lot of the stress of dealing with a friendly medusa when I could easily take her head off if she turned out to be hostile with no risks at all.
A great weapon that would work for the psi warrior is from the slayers series. The guy that has it is a muscle head but it is the Sword of Light. The lore in the series says the greater the user’s mental strength, the more powerful the blade. It comes from the “overworld” which is the Lost Universe series that happens in space. It looks like the handle and hilt of a regular sword. They use the idea of a katana, even though it is a European sword, by having a real blade in the handle held in place with mekugi. Once the mekugi is removed, the blade comes out, and a light blade extends. They’ve had characters of weak will hold it and almost no blade comes out while those with strong will have a strong blade. It even is a magic amplifier enhancing spells cast into the blade by the wielder or an ally. It could be an item that uses a mental attribute instead of physical for attack and damage, similar to how a warlock’s pack weapon uses charisma.
You say that you have a number of psionic dice equal to your PB and later say that you wish it was equal to double your PB. Well...I have good news for you. It is double lol
Honestly I wanted to try the Psi Warrior to roleplay a bit of a Alucard (Castlevania Series) type of character, specially with the flying sword beside him and stuff. But good to know the class took it's inspiration in Star wars though.
One of my favorite characters is in this one book series called: The Grimnoir Chronicles, The guy can manipulate gravity and i've been thinking about how to best recreate him in DnD and looks like this is the best option (maybe mix in a few levels of graviturgist wizard)
Try and convince an Enchantment wizard to enchant your sword to make whirling & humming noises so that you won't have to do it with your mouth while fighting.
Ah yes! Psi Warrior Fighter along with say, the Gloom Stalker Ranger and Oath of the Watchers Paladin are Imo peak aberration exterminators and Im all for it!
Hey, YMBA, I was wondering, will the classes from Grim hollow transformed or the College of Masks bard be added to the polls? Not immediately of course, but in the future at some point?
I laughed at Thumb Wars being an example of bad Star Wars parody. Hardly anyone saw it in 1999, let alone remembers it now. I personally would have used Hardware Wars, as it's more recognizable. Though I guess it's more in the "so bad it's good" category.
Not to be 'that guy' but the Psi Warrior DOES get 2 Psy Dice per point of Proficiency Bonus. Did you record this after a no-coffee bender because normally your research is more on-point. Still, I enjoyed the video.
Or add some emo/edgelord vibes with bloodhunter. 😂😊 mutant can help the attack stat or DC stat quite well it also goes great with artificer and we can actually get an energy blade by flavoring the crimson rite as fumbling a bit before the energy blade comes out. Clutsy sith is a special vibe! 🤣🤣🤪😉😁
Psi Warrior is the one subclass my DM doesn't allow. All of the other broken ones are fine but for some reason he isn't cool with this one. Also you can't donkey punch someone in the face. A donkey punch is to the back of the head. It just isn't physically possible.
I ADORE this subclass. I've got a Thri-Kreen Psi Warrior, meaning that they are an Alien bug creature that can only speak via telepathy, and is so insanely smart that they have a 30 in intelligence by level 20. So much roleplay opportunity, and SO much fun in a fight.
I wish there was a more humanoid version of Thri-kreen, because 4 armed races are cool. I am just a little bit bug'ged by it being so insectoid instead of something more humanoid.
Let's go weeb squad. Edit: Let's go Sith Squad! Fun fact: Multiclassing the Psi Warrior and Soulknife gives you tons of psionic shit to do, and if you go Fighter 8/Rogue 12, you still get the maximum number of ASIs possible.
You might be a Psi-murai. Im not gonna lie, i hate this subclass. The amount psi dice is limited. The class is MAD. Its basically a utility fighter. Just not my thing.
Ah yes, the Psi warrior my favorite samurai
I got the same notification

The psi-warrior does get double their proficiency bonus of psionic energy dice. At least the psi-warrior does in TCoE 5e (2014).
On a different note. I was thinking of making a psi-warrior modeled after a Mass Effect biotic.

Psi Warrior/Bladesinger also seems like a strong multiclass.
edit: Never mind, he just mentioned that in the video right after I commented that.
My problem with bladesinging is the one-handed sword prohibition. The proficiency in a single one-handed melee weapon is fine, you can remedy that, but the fact that you lose bladesong if you attack with two hands (two-handed or versatile) is brutal. so as mentioned by others, two corrections
one, you get dice equal to twice proficiency, although in the 2024 version it has its own table, you still start with 4 dice and end with 12 which is a lot.

Honestly I wanted to try the Psi Warrior to roleplay a bit of a Alucard (Castlevania Series) type of character, specially with the flying sword beside him and stuff. But good to know the class took it's inspiration in Star wars though.
I hope we can do college of creation one day
A surprise to be sure but a welcome one.
+ blade singer holy crap!
One of my favorite characters is in this one book series called: The Grimnoir Chronicles, The guy can manipulate gravity and i've been thinking about how to best recreate him in DnD and looks like this is the best option (maybe mix in a few levels of graviturgist wizard)
Literally the most fun figther, no joke
Im into anything psionics related
Great subclass
Lets goooooo, can't wait to see what you say this time
Try and convince an Enchantment wizard to enchant your sword to make whirling & humming noises so that you won't have to do it with your mouth while fighting.
Until they get that Sun Blade, give them a Moon-Touched Sword, they're nice and common and they also glow when they're unsheathed
I love your content, you’re doing great work. Never pronounce Ahsoka like that again.
"Donkey punch right in the face." Um...that would be...the opposite of a donkey punch...
Yeah, i did romance Bae'zel. She hits me differently you know?
oh, huh, would you look at that, I was just looking for Psi warrior info.
Ah yes! Psi Warrior Fighter along with say, the Gloom Stalker Ranger and Oath of the Watchers Paladin are Imo peak aberration exterminators and Im all for it!
Some bloodhunters also get some decent abilities for this.
Made a lizardfolk psi warrior that uses unarmed fighting style.
Long range chomp
i believe you do get dice based on twice your proficiency bonus, unless wikidot is incorrect lol
was waiting for ganghnam style.
Hey, YMBA, I was wondering, will the classes from Grim hollow transformed or the College of Masks bard be added to the polls? Not immediately of course, but in the future at some point?
This page is pretty fun
I just noticed the Psi Warrior looks like Sam Witwer.
9:50 the psi dice is equal to twice your proficiency bonus
Yeah Im just dumb lol
@@youmightbeadnd Deep down? we all are
PSI Warrior and Samurai D&D Psylocke
Don't they give you twice your proficiency bonus worth of dice?
I laughed at Thumb Wars being an example of bad Star Wars parody. Hardly anyone saw it in 1999, let alone remembers it now. I personally would have used Hardware Wars, as it's more recognizable. Though I guess it's more in the "so bad it's good" category.
The 2014 version of the Psi Warrior does get 2 times their Proficiency Bonus in dice. Did they change that in 2024?
Maybe an Sci-fi samurai! With a mind to enhance your muscles!
If you wanna watch the prequels without a lot of the silliness, check out The Blackened Mantle.
Blows up pancakes with mind
Would like your opinion Psi warrior Soul Knife? How many levels. Also how many levels of Bladesinger?
If you are a goblin you could be a mind goblin.
Yeah ... I don't need to finish the joke
what do you call a person that Multi class and soul knife, and illusion wizard you should do that
"I know you romanced Laezel you k’chaki little simp"
I'll have you know I didn't romance Laezel. Laezel romanced me
Not to be 'that guy' but the Psi Warrior DOES get 2 Psy Dice per point of Proficiency Bonus. Did you record this after a no-coffee bender because normally your research is more on-point. Still, I enjoyed the video.
Wait, you do get psionic die equal to twice your proficiency bonus.
Psi warrior multiclass options
Kensei monk
Blade singer wizard
Hexblade warlock
Each one is a banger and hexblade psi warrior? Perfect for sith lords
10:02, I think you messed up a bit, cuz the psi warrior DOES have psi dice equal to twice your PB. 🎉🎉🎉
Did.... Did I spot a Jensaarai?!
Here b4 the title change
I love the concept and flavor of the Psi, but it just seems hella weak compared to 80% of the other fighter subclasses.
Am I over analyzing it?
Great video but the psi warrior DOES get twice their proficiency bonus in psionic dice, in both the 2014 and 2024 versions
Any builds for gallen Marek, send me a link?
Oathbreaker Paladin pls
Samurai Gang 🫡
Spaceballs spotted!
Did you just say Ashoka? Lol
❤
Brain happy
yea, i read ps1 warrior
is this 2024 dnd ?
SPACEBALLS!!??!
lol he messed up the title
This Samurai seems... off. Eh, oh well!
Psi Warrior is the one subclass my DM doesn't allow. All of the other broken ones are fine but for some reason he isn't cool with this one.
Also you can't donkey punch someone in the face. A donkey punch is to the back of the head. It just isn't physically possible.
Through the head then maybe?
Tbh i think more of grey knights than jedi
I ADORE this subclass. I've got a Thri-Kreen Psi Warrior, meaning that they are an Alien bug creature that can only speak via telepathy, and is so insanely smart that they have a 30 in intelligence by level 20. So much roleplay opportunity, and SO much fun in a fight.
I wish there was a more humanoid version of Thri-kreen, because 4 armed races are cool. I am just a little bit bug'ged by it being so insectoid instead of something more humanoid.
Cool man😗
Anakin Skywalker disliked this video.
He also disliked sand.
Or missing limbs. 😂😊😅
THIS MAN SAID ASHOKA INSTEAD OF AHSOKA! BULLY THIS MAN!
Fighter bloodhunter works pretty well too.
First cyberpunk now dnd, da fuck ARE MY TH-camRS STALKING ME?! I swear I talk about something and you lot UPLOADED a video of that something less
Hi dnd
Do or do not,
do not roll....
You might be a Psi-murai.
Im not gonna lie, i hate this subclass. The amount psi dice is limited. The class is MAD.
Its basically a utility fighter.
Just not my thing.
