Cliff Burton was a huge H.P. Lovecraft fanatic , and this was sort of an homage to their late bandmate and friend. It's based on the Lovecraft short "The Shadow over Innsmouth", which also has a movie titled "Dagon" that's loosely based on this story. Call of Ktulu was co-written with Burton as well, and was kind of "his" song, along with Orion.

Awesome! My first live Metallica show was this Tour in Atlanta, GA...I was absolutely blown away and remember it like it was yesterday. I didn't see them again until the "Black album" Tour, also in Atlanta but in an arena as opposed to an outdoor amphitheater - the tickets for the scheduled Date went so fast, they added a second show the very next night! Yep, H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu and The Great Old Ones in general. Mentioning the name Cthulhu will bring him closer so the song was called 'The Call Of Ktulu'. Also the songs All Nightmare Long, Dream No More. So it's 4 songs including 'The Thing That Should Not Be' , I just found out. Thought it was just 3. Apparently 'All Nightmare Long' is based off of 'Hounds of Tindalos'. According to wiki: "A Hound of Tindalos is a fictional creature created by Frank Belknap Long and later incorporated into the Cthulhu Mythos when it was codified by August Derleth. They first appeared in Long's short story "The Hounds of Tindalos", first published in the March 1929 issue of Weird Tales. Lovecraft mentions the creatures in his short story "The Whisperer in Darkness" (1931)." 💡
Saw that tour. Not only could you feel Jason's bass in your chest, as we were lined up outside on the parking lot/concourse of the arena waiting on doors to open they were soundchecking his bass and you could feel the concrete concourse rumbling. It was great. Even better hearing it from a mass of wavy locks and pools of sweat.
Disposable hero’s is probably the best on their, master is most popular but all 4 members really went off on disposable hero’s song. Highly recommend it. Either album version or live Mexico City one where Lars played it easier for himself but the crowd energy is something to behold

I'd love to see a Suicidal/Metallica show, as long as Metallica stuck to stuff they recorded before Robert joined the band...before the Black album, preferably. I love the idea of Robert Trujilo in Metallica, in a "well, somebody's got to do it" and he's getting paid and great for him. But, I don't like him as a member of Metallica as much as I do/did Jason. The Metallica that Robert Trujilo is a part of isn't one I'd be that excited to see in concert, unless it was some show they were only gonna play stuff from the first four (five if I'n feeling generous) albums and say, Garage, Inc. And as a member of the band, I like Jason better. He's an underdog who got screwed by the villain of the piece, the worst human being to ever be a member of the band, Lars. Robert might be a better bassist, but he's part of a band that is past their prime, Jason was there when Metallica was the most important band on Earth. When real, true, honest thrash Metal music with serious political and social messages took on the world and won for a brief shining moment. He might not have been part of the engine that got them there, but he helped push it across the line...somebody had to play bass so Lars could pretend it didn't exist. this song is directly connected to Ride The Lightning's The Call of Ktulu . the only song I can think uf in the first 4 albums to be a sequel. "we all know about the Unforgiven trilogy if we know our Metallica. but this is special for those of us who've been in for the long haul .
Everything I learned about the stagecraft of being a frontman came from three videos, which I watched until the tapes wore out and I had to purchase them again. *The Doors, 1968*; *Iggy Pop, Live at the Ritz 1986*, and this concert. As I got older I acquired some other, more sophisticated influences, but for years I was so proud to be a successful student of these three styles.

These were awesome concerts especially since they were still an underground band with no radio or MTV play. Felt like marathon, car wreck, adrenaline high & fist fight after going home.
I hate to be THAT guy, but Metallica did get MTV airplay thanks to the music video for the song "One". This concert was in August of 1989, 8 months after the music video for "One" debuted on MTV.
@@TokusatsuGamingfan They were headlining shows and selling gold albums before the video from their 4th album. The mosh pits were just as epic on Master of Tours
Listen too Creeping Death Live in San Diego 1992 show. As well as The Four Hourseman from the same show. Both of those lives are hype as hell because of Jason and Lars
Interesting fact: according to Kirk Hammett, Kurt Cobain was at this concert
That was in Seatle 92. He asked kirk if they were going to play whiplash. Sorry for my english not good
Kurt would have been as big as Metallica had Courtney not drove him to take the cowardly way out
I saw them about 3 weeks after this show. I couldn’t hear for days. Queensryche opened for them
Disposal Heroes is probably the heaviest song on the album, heavier than Battery. Probably the best, most impactful yet underrated song Metallica has done.
Damage Inc. Is the fastest song on the album.
They have a song called "I disappear" you should give it a shot.
Anger at it's best
The entire concert is the best
Legend has it that, the old ones sent the song to the tallica boy's ... cause if you're gonna do something make it HEAVY LOL 😂
Been waitin 6 months for you to hear Disposable Heroes….LETS GO!!
🔥 🤘😆🤘🔥
The fact that you realized this song and Call of Ktulu were related is why I subscribed to your channel. You are 100% right. This song is connected to HP Lovecraft lore.
Always a pleasure
this song is directly connected to Ride The Lightning's The Call of Ktulu . the only song I can think uf in the first 4 albums to be a sequel.
One other thing. See how much better concerts are without everyone holding a fucking phone. Those were the good Ole days.
Yes, the songs is about Cthulhu, the sunken city, and the elder gods and great old ones.
I attended this Show in Houston Tx Ive seen Metallica 15 times this tour right here was the best.
Not just a sea monster-a sea monster from another dimension that is not made wholly of matter, who lies dead-but dreaming-in his sunken city at R’lyeh.
Yes, this song is about Ktulu (Cthulhu), in case you were wondering. And as James said, it's one of their heaviest songs ever.
I can't wait for the and justice for all album reaction
James sounds like a monster here. Man I miss when his voice was capable of this
Jajaja realmente imaginé al mismísimo Satán bailando está canción 😈🕺
My brother was at this concert, he was killed in a car accident in 2002 so this is hard to watch. Love you Rusty.
Everyone needs to check out the Metal documentary called Murder in the Front Row.. All about our scene here in the Bay Area 80-86. We were and still are the epicenter. lots of early Metallica, Exodus, Slayer, Testament, Possessed, Machinehead, Death Angel, Primus, Violence. If you are Metal AF, you've already seen it.
yep it is HP lovecraft
This is from a box set that came with three CDs, two VHS tapes, a tshirt with the little demon flippin the bird and a laminate pass. It was called Live Shit Bunge and Purge. This song is kind of a callback to HP Lovecraft just like the Call of Cthulhu.
Orion is my favorite MOP song. Also my favorite Metallica song.
Best concert ever recorded.
This song is about Cthulu as described in H.P. Lovecraft's chilling stories. Its an old God leftover from before creation who sleeps in his temple ruins deep in the sea. Cthulu is such a powerful God that to even be near him drives mortals insane
Need to check out Blackened off the And Justice For All album
This concert is the best with hammer festival live 1985
please react to the some of the early 80s live stuff
The riffage of this song will just randomly enters my head from time to time. The outro.
I'd like to see Kerry King play the lead on this, i bet it would sound wicked. I got this album on vinyl, back when it was first released (:
'In madness, you dwell ! (chunk da da da, da da, chunk chunk chunk chunk chunk chunk chunk chunk, chunk chunk (:
need a full seattle 89 reaction
Finally Seattle 89, there's two other songs at this concert that's better than the studio version. "For whom the bell tolls" you will love that one. And "fade to Black" just awesome. love to see a reaction. Be cool stay safe!!!
Yeah, that's likely not going to happen since she's already reacted to those songs.
The song is about Cthulu a great old 1 lurking beneath the sea
I wish I could meet with you and talk music like for real you seem pretty chill
Yeah Lilly that hand rubbing you mentioned from Kirk is Just pick scraping the strings. Just one
of many techniques of gettting different sounds. Can be a combination palm muting and using guitar pick
Thus is a final boss song🤘
The shit Live. Heavy as F
DIG THE BARS
Definitely need to react to damage inc and disposable heroes off the master of puppets album.
Absolutely related to Call of Cthulhu. This is a lyrical homage to Lovecraftian lore, where Call of Cthulhu was the instrumental. Their heaviest and best song in my opinion. The heavy guitar and lyrical content are a pure masterpiece.
The thing that should not be, the second best song on the album 😃
MY FAV IS GANAGED INC
Haha yess i was trying to get another channel to react to this one.
One of my all time favorites of Metallica. "Lurking Beneath the Sea".
