That knife looks like something I would love to have! There's projects I would definitely use it for. Also, I think the sheath is fine. It looks nice and performs its function well.
Thanks for showing it. My first DIY file knife was completly disappointing. Because of the video I should try it again, there are some old rusty files in the garage yet:-)
I am just a home handy bloke, and during CovID19 lockdowns, I made 2 knives for campcraft activities, from old files ,and also 2 draw knives for woodworking projects. I used timber for one knife handle and Micarta from the leg of a pair of old jeans for the other one. I used an angle grinder, flapper disks and a cheap belt sander for all the grinding activities.
I'm going to have to give this way a go on making my seax knife. I have a bunch of old files and wood wrasps, most being way too thick to work with this style but I do have around 100 or so close to that thickness that I could use for different style of knives with this method.

Sharpener review suggestion: Ken onion elite blade grinder. It’s essentially a mini belt grinder. It probably fits a size and precision need in the shop. Definitely fits a portability slot as it fits in a tool bag to take somewhere, like sharpening mom’s knives.

I absolutely love this knife! I am a 64 year old female knife enthusiast....I will always love knives. Is there any possibility to purchase one of these from you??
Hi! Glad you like it! I really don't turn out a high volume of knives and am not taking custom orders. When I do have one for sale I do sell it on my website, but most are not really EDC knives.
You should get the Ameribrade sharpening system. They make it for 1.5 inch tooling arms as well as their proprietary 2 inch. I have one and it’s fantastic! Plus, if you get it and review it, I’m sure I’ll learn something new about it.
When hollow grinding you want to try and line up your edge with the center axle of the grinding wheel. I understand exactly what you said about having the edge thicken and can be very frustrating to figure out. Also Travis wuertz does several excellent video explaining hollow grinding and they are worth a look. Nice work as usual on the build.
Thanks man, I'll take a look. I think I would of been better off free handing it and dipping the tang down during the grind. Allowing the edge to land at the same point on the wheel when grinding the belly and tip of the blade. That's I've I've done it in the past with good success, but wanted to try the work rest.
@@RedBeardOps that works well. It is similar to free hand flat grinding in that way with moving your pressure where you want to grind. It is just a little different working off a tool rest but is quick and effective once you get your tool rest height adjusted. I’m sure with a little practice you will have it down in no time.
I have a bunch of scrap files from yard sales for this purpose, and this video is good motivation to just do it. Would you say that tempering first makes the profiling process substantially easier?

Great tips on making a knife without using a forge. I really didn't know anyone could make a knife without a forge. Just pop-it in the oven at 400, too easy.
If you use an angle grinder and a belt sander and go slowly even if the metal heats up in places you can sand it off if you don’t take it back the entire way and cool it using water
Most modern files are case hardened as that's all a file needs, hard teeth, and it's easier and cheaper to manufacture. So best to test by cutting a bit off.
Thanks for making these videos. I am super interested in starting to make knives. This looks like a really great first project. I'm confused (genuine question), doesn't the rapid water quench harden the material? I thought that slow cooling was necessary for tempering at low temperatures to reduce hardness?
This file is already hardened. When working with a piece of high carbon bar stock you'll quench the blade (generally in oil) to harden it; then temper in an oven to remove some of that hardness and make the blade tough.

Why temper the knife if you aren’t quenching it for hardness?
Files are hardened and need to be tempered to perform as a knife. Too brittle otherwise

If you have the capacity to do that

SO important to get a file that isn't case hardened ! The center is soft, and can not be hardened, Total waste of time. don't ask how I know.
That's a very good point!
I would have kept the handle at full hardness so it is a useful file. 🤔
not a bad idea
Yeah i know someone that cut themselves pretty good on a scotchbrite wheel
I believe that!
I'd say it's missing a lanyard hole. You could have annealed the part of the handle where you drilled and kept the rest of the knife in water.
Also maybe a sharpening choil on the blade with a dremel and small sanding disks or like a diamond file.
yep, lots of options
