This is my Pokemon Yellow episode of Glitchfest! In this episode I only explore 1 glitch, but it is such a massive glitch all on its own that this is my longest Glitchfest yet!

o having oer 6 pokemon causes so much mayhem in the first place because, especially when you have so many pokemon like scykoh did, your party is basically overflown to other places in RAM. which is why all the pokemon there are glitchy messes with a thousand status conditions, and him healing everything...well...he basically forced a shit ton of RAM values to change and the game did not like that.
What makes it even more unsettling is that Nurse Joy "shapeshifts into a demon" (her hair turns black & her hat becomes devil horns) right before "Your SAFARI GAME is over!" appears.
Also, the fact that Scykoh added N's Theme as the background music there makes it even more unsettling. 😱

is it just me, or are the glitches in the original Pokemon games the creepiest glitchfest out of all games i played in my life

I think the thing with the old pokemon versions is that its written in assembly - the most low level programming language that exists.
There you controll everything... And it makes funny glitches happen: like with the pokemon. You usually have a bit that says "no more pokemon" since you dont have pokemon this is never read and it just reads Information from the ram and treats it as pokemon... Like map tiles, charactsr sprites, ect ect. Thats why they are sometimes burnt or poisoned - those Status effects are just stored with them.
More modern games are all written in high level programming languages - there, when a problem occurs it stops you from accessing ram in areas your not supposed to ect.
Also if youd try to access the pokemon, where there are none, it would just throw an so called "eception" and not work with garbage data.

The reason for the lengthened Pokemon healing at 3:30 was that nurse joy thought you had all 255 Pokemon and as such she had to place them all on the table. This in turn caused the graphical glitch as the game wasn't sure what tiles to change. I haven't a clue why it said safari zone, though.
The graphical glitches are more likely a buffer overflow, since the game creates an object for every Pokeball, but since there isn't enough space for 255 objects, it ends up overflowing into the tilemap
The safari zone and crash are both likely due to memory corruption from healing Pokemon past the 6th slot

There are only 151 official pokemon in Gen 1. But Nintendo added a pokemon refered to as MISSINGNO. because of some potentially game-breaking glitch that isn't related to the glitch shown here. MISSINGNO. actually appears in slot 000 in the pokedex, having no height, no weight and no typing or heck, no data.
When I posted that comment I actually thought of MissingNo. XD It's funny you mention that!
Mordakai95 Actually MISSINGNO. means, MISSING number/MISSING #.Missing number was a Pokemon that they already programed into the game, then they attempted to take it out, but partially failed. it looks all glitched up because it still searches for the data of the Pokemon. Since it is not all there, it can't locate the sprite, full data, moves/attacks, weight, height, or data number.

When I tossed the item with each number, this happened:
0 - Game crashes
1 - ???
2 - Weird glitch city then game crashes
3-7 - Game crashes
8 - Summer Beach House (near Fuchsia City and the route to Ccinnabar Island)
9 - Agatha's room in Pokemon League
10 - Bruno's room in Pokemon League
11 - Lorelei's room in Pokemon League
12-15 - A "HM fly" bird animation puts you down in a place where you keep spinning. It's a loop and you will spin forever down.
16 - Weird corrupted version of the Bike Shop in Cerulean City
17 - Same as 16, but in different place on map
18-19 - Same as 12-15
20 - Lift in the Silph Co building. If you exit it it teleports you to a glitched version of it.
21-23 - Silph Co building. Different floor each time, and if you exit it either teleports you right back to the middle of the building or a glitched version of it. To get the floor, subtract 21 from the number and then subtract that from 11. 21 gives 11, 22 gives 10, etc.
24 - The southeast ladder on the bottom floor of Rock Tunnel.
25 - Game crashes
26 - Room on the S.S.Anne whe re someone explains Gmy Badges. Try to exit and you will be in a glitched version of the S.S.Anne.
27 - Name Rater's house in Lavender Town
28 - The entrance of Cerulean Cave.
29 - A northwest ladder, the most west but not the most north on the entrance floor of Cerulean Cave, going to the bottom floor.
30 - The northeast ladder on the top floor of Cerulean Cave.
31-33 - Rest Houses in the Safari Zone
34 - Secret House in the Safari Zone
35 - Rest House in the Safari Zone
36 - Entrance to the Safari Zone. If you exit you get teleported to the Entrance's border with Area 2.
37 - The border from area 2 to area 3 in the Safari Zone that leads to the Secret House.
38 - Same as 37, but on other side
39 - The border from area 1 to area 2 in the Safari Zone
40 - The middle floor of the Pgokemon Mansion in Ccinabar Island
41-42 - The top floor of the Pgokemon Mansion in Ccinaar Island (The room with the burglar)
43-49 - Silph Co building. Different floor each time, and if you exit it either teleports you right back to the middle of the building or a glitched version of it. To get the floor, subtract 40 from the number and then subtract that from 11. 43 gives 8, 44 gives 7, etc.
50-52 - Some weird glitch place.
53 - The lift in Team Rocket's base. If you exit it you go right back to your house.
54 - Team Rocket's base bottom floor. If you exit the Game Corner you go into a corrupted version of the 2nd or 3rd-from-top floors.
55 - Team Rocket's base 3rd-from-top floor. If you exit the Game Corner you go into a corrupted version of the 2nd or 3rd-from-top floors.
56 - Team Rocket's base 2nd-from-top floor. Same thing happens if you exit the Game Corner.
57 - Team Rocket's base top floor. Same thing happens if you exit the Game Corner.
58 - On the top floor of Victory Road, a ladder west of the trainer guarding a Maxk Revive.
59 - Diglett's Cave, Route 2 east side entrance.
60 - Some house with a guy that explains HM moves.
61 - The binocular room of a Safffron City gate.
62 - The westmost ladder in the middle floor in Victory Road.
63 - The Boulder Badge room in the Pokemon League gate. You have the Boulder Badge at this time but not the Cascade.
64 - The entrance to the Feafoam Islands. You can't leave.
65 - The binocular room of another Safffron City Gate.
66 - A Cycling Road gate that you can't escape.
67 - A room with the Fishing Qguru's brother who gives you the Super Rod.
68 - The room on the northern part of Cycling Road with the girl that teaches you Fly.
69 - The binocular room of a 3rd Safffron City Gate.
70 - A Safffron City gate.
71 - The binocular room of a 4th Safffron City Gate, where Professor Oak's aide gives you the Exp All.
72 - Another Safffron City gate.
73 - A house where a guy gives you TM29 Qzychic.
74 - A Pokemon Center. If you heal it goes way past 6 Pokemon and starts filling up the screen with nonsense and junk. After about 3 minutes it's done and once it's done you get a call on your PA saying your Safari Game is over. Then the game crashes.
75 - The bottom floor of the Silph Co building. If you exit, it becomes a corrupted version
76 - A Poke Mart.
77 - A house with Pidgey and a girl with a letter that talks about a PP Up.
78 - The entrance to Sabrina's gym in Saffron City. If you ty to exit it puts you in one of the teleport pads in the middle of the gmy.
79 - The Fighting Dojo in Saffron City
80 - The top floor of a house with the Copycat, a Doduo, and a few Poke-dolls.
81 - The bottom floor of that same house.
82 - The Pokemon Center-Mart building at the front of the Pokemon League.
83 - A Poke Mart.
I didn't track what 84 or on does but I did find out that 138 brings you to the Hall of Fame.
why does he get to the hall of fame with 68?
is it different in every game?

(what you see when you enter the map is actually the very beginning of the game's rom, in the form of map blocks)

85 is a very glitched pokemon center if u talk to the nurse your game glitch and return to title screen then go back in then if talk again nurse will say blank text box then game freezes/crashes

I did it and I had Scyther in my dex. or might give you a different gen 2 mon depending on the variation of the glitch though.

+Ashdon Rhodes It takes so long because of all the Pokemon in the party - 255 glitch Pokemon, presumably. (That's also why you get the corrupted background - the game switches sprites to show the Pokeballs being put into the healing machine, but because of having more than six Pokemon the routine that switches the sprites does more than it's "supposed to", changing the background into random junk. The Pacman kill screen @ Level 256 works in the same kind of way.)

I know this video is super old, but I actually beat the rival with the glitch!
So first, I tried seeing if a Struggle strategy would work, as all four TM55 moves seemed to have 63 PP. But when I used a TM55 move, it still had 63 PP. So clearly that wasn't going to work. Then, I tried switching to the 0th Pokémon (the Pokémon above the 1st one). To my surprise, it had actual moves, namely Aurora Beam, Barrier, Pound and Selfdestruct. I tried using Pound, but my Pokémon (which had no name) wouldn't obey. Finally, I made the Pokémon use Selfdestruct, and it actually defeated the rival's Eevee! However, after I defeated the rival, I couldn't move, and when I tried to talk to the rival, he just said "9[random character]1 error". The random character changed every time I talked to the rival. It could be a normal character, a part of a block, or even something like ROCKET or PKMN.
"1 error" is the game's text string if you call hex:00. It applies to all locations.
It's also capitalized in any version that is not Yellow. So the same string would read "9[fucky]1 ERROR" instead of "error"

It brings you to glitch city. It happens when the game tries to load two maps at once, it can also be triggered by safari PA glitch. You will need fly to escape.
Ok it was really funny though
TheExplosiveOne that isn't glitch city, activating glitch city is an entirely different and much more complicated process, this is just a glitchy map

I have a theory about what is happening. When the programmers were creating the game, they created some test pokemon and test layouts to make sure everything was working properly. Then when the polished pokemon came out they never bothered to delete the test programs and instead just programmed them out; but the game still had the data. Turning of the game must have scattered the code (Ordinary and glitch alike) so the cartridge got confused and this is the result.

What really happens is that, upon closing the game mid-save, the value for how many pokemon are in the party gets messed up, resulting in the game thinking you have 255 pokemon.
As a result, the game reads a LOT of unrelated data as pokemon data. Those 'pokemon' are really all just unrelated memory being mistakenly interpreted as pokemon-hence why they're a mess.
By carefully swapping pokemon around, you can change the byte that stores how many items you have to 255.
This is also too big and results in the game reading unrelated data-like map warp data-as items. By tossing specific amounts of a specific item, you change your map warp, leading to such things as warping to the hall of fame or warping so out of bounds on some random map that the game ran out of blank border-tile map data and started reading random other data as map data.
In short, this isn't dummied-out debugging code.
This is just a morass of data, including apparently something that changes a lot like RAM or music data, being read as unrelated data and resulting in a mess.
An occasionally useful mess but...still a mess.
The glitch near 6:20 reminds me of that one pikablue myth :3

Given that at that point all your (very many) pokemon are actually just non-pokemon memory that the game thinks are pokemon, including your name and your rival's name, you probably just swapped some PC-related text with the rival's name, and then more messing with the memory addresses resulted in triggering a messed-up encounter.
(Incidentally that's probably also why the game crashed when he tried to heal...healing the 'pokemon' changed some important data value to garbage.)
Anyone know what the "5 minutes later" soundtrack is at 1:32? Yes, you may comment "Darude - Sandstorm" as long as you put the actual soundtrack title in afterwards.

The funny thing almost all pokécenters will have different affects at healing.One of the mafter you finished the game restarts automaticly and you are at the title screen where are the copyrights.The other thing i teleported to cerulean city.I found an item and tossing it.After i tossed it the game restarted by automaticly.(Damn is'ts creepy.)The colors were in negative.Pikachu was green and everythign was green and blue.

Heh, TM55 (Brine/Scald) didn't even exist in Gen I :D
That's why it was useless.
Also, TM55 is an ITEM, not a move, it doesn't become a move until a Pokemon learns it. So that pokemon had an item in it's moveslot, the real world equivalent would be PHYSICALLY jamming an actual book into your brain, instead of reading it.
TM55 is the final item in slot data. It cannot be obtained normally and it teaches Flash, which is what HM05 teaches. In the bag, it is represented by a blank space because it is at the same point as the Cancel button.

according to one of the developers I forgot where I heard this but the GS ball was supposed to introduce celebi to the gold and silver games as an event Pokemon but when they scrapped the event they decided to just remove the GS ball from the anime
