      The premise must be to actually know the voice to begin with so it doesnt matter if its a average rock fan or not.
      Its just you know the voice and singer if only a little bit but would you recognize it just from the voice.
      And the vocal style of growling and screaming just has not the ability to be as distinctive as a singing voice.

      Honestly if it wasn't for this I think Patton would be in S tier on this list. I think with the volume and variety of stuff he's in, from his music to video game voice acting to making monster noises in movies, I feel like a decently strong case could be made for the majority of people in countries that have easy access to that kinda thing having heard his voice in something they enjoyed since 1990.

    I guess it really comes down to 3 things: The global reach of the artist, as well as the age and location of the person who's making the list. Me, being German and born in 1980, I'd put Bruce Dickinson, Rob Haldford (both location bias) and Axl Rose (age and artist reach) clearly in S tier, while most of the US-centric Grunge and New Metal movement passed by myself pretty much without me caring about it at all. Never ever would I recognize Corey Taylor's voice if he sang the national anthem or twinkle...same probably for Eddie Vedder, Scott Stapp, Dave Draiman, etc. So it really comes down to where and for how long you've been socialized with Rock and Metal.

    • @anarchclown
      @anarchclown หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah. I'm from the same general area and age bracket, but I have to accept that Judas Priest just barely has more listeners than Sabaton these days looking at Spotify right now and in comparison System of a Down has more than 3 times as many listeners as Iron Maiden. With that said... I think people underestimate the influence and reach of Guns'n'Roses. They have more listeners per month than Metallica still to this day.

    • @davecomstock9544
      @davecomstock9544 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm exactly twenty years older, but I feel the same way. I know their names and their bands' names, but wouldn't recognize vocals from Corey Taylor, Chester Bennington, King Diamond, Serj Tankian, Will Ramos, Chad Kroeger, and Zack De La Rocha, and Fred Durst would be much, much lower for me. I've heard of Sabaton, Type O Negative, and Static-X, but didn't know any of their singers' names.
      Halford, McCartney, Nicks would all be much higher on my list, Tarja a bit higher, and Ann Wilson would be a solid S. Steve Perry is a tricky one: current Journey singer Arnel Pineda is scarily close, so is it live or is it Memorex? (I know, dating myself. But new stuff is being released on cassette tape again, right?)
      A few I might have added if the list were expanded: Geddy Lee, Jon Anderson of Yes (although not a favorite of mine, he's certainly recognizable), Klaus Meine of Scorpions, Tom Petty, and possibly Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria.

      @@anarchclown Now that I think about it, I do remember that one of the Paris open air shows of the Use Your Illusion tour was actually broadcasted on German national radio back in 1992. I do remember getting home a little late that day and my parents had the radio on in the car. And the news anchor said something like „And now back to Paris where Guns‘N Roses is about to finish their set“. And it went back straight to Paris where they were just kicking into Knocking on heaven’s door. That was quite epic shit, you could hear the crowd go crazy…wild. I cannot remember any other artist who‘s concert was live on national radio back in the day. Not Madonna, not Michael Jackson…MAYBE the first Live Aid, but that‘d be a different thing anyways. This is super tricky first because including rock and metal vocalists automatically pushes the more rock oriented to the top because of how popular the bands or artists are and how niche a lot of the metal bands are. Secondly, there's the generational thing too. People like Axl Rose, Brian Johnson and Kurt Cobain (which wasn't on the list) for me break the generational gap since so many young people listen to their bands nowadays, whereas some other older voices may not be that recognizable. Also there's the matter of normies if you will (people who are not really into rock or metal or even music) many times don't give a shit or don't pay attention to voices necessarily but more so to catchy songs and melodies. So I think it would be interesting to do a tierlist within the metal community and another tierlist for more of a broad audience. Anyway, great video man!

      I feel floor does so many different styles that it would be hard to 100% recognise her if you just heard her singing, even if you know about her. Tarja however, her operatic style mixed with her accent makes it almost on the same level as Ozzy and Brian, but she's definitly hindered by not as many knowing older Nightwish. It would be interesting to hear every single one of these singers actually singing Twinkle Twinkle little star in their own style, and how many you could pick out. I also feel Joakims thick swedish accent and deep voice makes him pretty obvious.

    My two takeaways from the list are a) you need to be 40 years in the business from a time when there weren't many alternatives to be S tier and b) due to the proliferation of metal into so many subgenres no vocalist from the last 20 years has a chance to ever become S tier.
    I mean, Floor Jansen has been singing to sold out arenas and headlining the biggest metal festivals for over a decade, yet in a Twitch chat people were asking Floor who?

      @@TankTheTech I am not sure if I understand your examples. Ice Hockey and Basketball are the same for everyone, so if another great player should enter the arena, they would another one of the greats to join the ranks of those that came before. But with music, it's different. Especially when it comes to metal with its thousands of sub categories. My point is, even if a singer has a S tier recognisablity in their field, like Floor, the broader metal community would not recognise her if they weren't into symphonic metal. On the other hand I would bet money that if someone had heard her sing a few songs, they would recognise her immediately. But that is just not going to happen on a large scale.

    The 'issue' I see here is that there are just too many variables to take into account to determine one's frame of reference. It's simply not possible to generalize into 'general rock and metal'. Age, location, being two large factors here. Heck, even the way you consume music can be a factor. And there are many more. Some of the names mentioned here are nowhere near my frame. Does that make me ignorant? Or is it just how the dice fell when building my frame? Granted, your audience as a whole probably has a very wide frame altogether, but I still think including their votes into your decision making doesn't cover all variables.

  • @criwall

    Nice list and discussion, I disagree several tiers placement on several of them (both up and down) but it's a tier list thats to be expected (and I totally agree that it's impossible to do without wanting to change half the list as soon as you are done and that its har to separate the artist from how well known they are, even if you try to be objective). I do feel one of the things that makes it so hard is that it's so dependent on what you mean with recognizable. How much of a factor is how big the band is for example and how often you listend to them. Everyone knows Queen and therefore everyone will recognise Freddy, no matter what he was singing. But if we are talking about if each of these have a distinct enough voice and vocal style that you could instantly recognize it even on a cover song or as a guest artist? If they where singing Twinkle twinkle little star in the same style as they are known for (but without their band) ? Freddy, Brian and Ozzy in the top? Yeah no discussion there, but I would argue that for people who know who Nightwish are or have heard even one early Nightwish song could definitly recocgnize Tarja same way as people who have herd one ACDC song can recogince Brian. I feel she is definitly up there on S tier after them. Are there any other female operatic singers in the metal scene, yes, but are therre any with her accent? Her version of Muse Supremacey is a good example. It's not Nightwish, but i feel most people would think it is if they didn't know the song before. I honestly feel Joachim from Sabaton is the same, his super deep swedish accent makes his voice very distinct IMO. I do have to agree that Alissa is probably D, shes fantastic, but there are quite a few women growlers now, and with just her voice I agree that it's not unique enough. For example, on the verison of Powerwolfs Demons are a girls best friend, can someone who only knows about Arch Enemy identify that it's Alissa when the band plays a different type of metal? Brian Johnsson doing it, 100% of people would say it's the dude from ACDC. I also feel Lzzy should be B or at least high C, she has a distinct grit in her voice, but that might be the fan in me talking... ;)
