  • I hope you enjoy this cosy reading vlog! It was worth straining my eyesight for. I had a lovely evening reading two short stories about the "New Woman" - The Yellow Drawing Room, and The Yellow Wallpaper.

    The Yellow Wallpaper is superb. We studied it in a humanities module in my first year at uni. When you analyze it line by line you see how the husband controls the woman in totally the wrong way. Mental health has come along way since.

    Lucy, I find such a perpetual joy in your reading vlogs. It is so unfortunate that Mona Caird’s writing is no longer in print. I hope to download her stories from Archive. I have lately been reading extensively and straining my eyes. Writing does not cause eye strain, for I can weave stories through my thoughts. I endeavor to read The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman because it is a story about passion and fervor. I am determined to read stories from the perspectives of these valiant women. It is wonderful that you are developing an interest in short fiction. You have read quite a few short stories from the Victorian Era and Edwardian Period that I desire to read. I have recently been analyzing symbolism in literature. In your novel, The Paper and Hearts Society, books symbolize comfort and happiness. I love you

      "I can weave stories through my thoughts" - a wonderful description, I love it! And yes, books definitely do symbolise comfort and happiness in The Paper & Hearts Society. And friendship too!

    Loved this style of video and the side by side look at the two stories! I read The Yellow Wallpaper last year and really enjoyed it, but that Mona Caird excerpt you read has me on my way to read her work immediately! Thanks for the recommendation ;)

    I Really enjoyed this video, it felt so cosy and just like I was sat having a chat with a friend about books ☺️ I was so pleased that you enjoyed The Yellow Wallpaper, I feel it’s a really important book addressing some really important issues. I first read it a couple of years after suffering from postnatal depression and it felt incredibly powerful, and almost a little scary.

    What a lovely reading vlog, Lucy! What you were saying about the colour yellow is so interesting. If you've seen the original cover for Dracula then you'll know that is also bright yellow. In that case, yellow was also used to align the book with more experimental and disreputable forms of literature. Can't wait for Victober!

    • @lucythereader
      @lucythereader  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, I didn't know that about Dracula! There was The Yellow Book too, which is supposedly the book Oscar Wilde was carrying when he was arrested.
      I can't wait for Victober either!

    Thank you Lucy: liked the more off the cuff style, and guinea pigs are always a bonus. Dogs too. :-)
    It's been a very long time since I read The Yellow Wallpaper, but it stuck with me and has long enjoyed quite a reputation as something of a one off. Actually, I gained a fresh insight into it some years ago by contracting pneumonia (not recommended) and had all the fun of a few days of delirium. This is not an experience I'd care to try to describe, but Charlotte Perkins Gilman did so exceedingly well. It's one of those works of fiction which permits of several readings, and that's the really literal one!

    There is nothing like reading by candlelight, it's so relaxing. I found a vintage copy of Shirley by Charlotte Bronte this week and I couldn't pass it up. Definitely made me think of you.

    Ahh! I'm coming to this late, but I'm so excited to see Schreiner included here! I love The Buddhist Priest's Wife, and I just finished editing a new edition of her important work Dreams for Broadview Press (on page proofs now!). If you liked The Buddhist Priest's Wife, give Dreams a try. It's a wonderful utopian work that was extremely important to the women's suffrage movement!
