- New Golden Fung Wong is a long time Chinese bakery located on Mott Street in NYC Chinatown. They are well known for their Moon Cakes but announced that they will be closing for good at the end of July 2024. The owners are retiring and will not be continuing the business.

Oh no! I have been going to this bakery for many years and have enjoyed their traditional cakes. There aren't many more of these classic bakeries in New York any more.

It’s sad they’re closing down
That's where my parents would always get their mooncakes at when Chinese New Year rolled around each year. Me I'd just ask my parents to get me their friend multi-colored shrimp chips. Good childhood memories from the 80's/90's.
Golden Fung Bakery has been around since my family immigrated on 9/16/68 to Chinatown/50 Mott Street; right near Fong On Tofu shop. There's still a bakery, Lung Moon baker at 83 Mulberry Street. They've been around just around the same time so go visit before they vanish, too.
Lung Moon was my childhood spot. They sadly closed a few years ago.

End of an era
You can actually peel that tapioca cake in layers and it will taste much more satisfying. Still sad to see a spot that has been in Chinatown for over 60 years to close down.
It's such a tragedy for the bakery to be closing this month. I remembered that I used to go there to try the various versions of their Moon Cakes; such as White Lotus paste, red bean with salted duck egg, etc.
At least I managed to go to the bakery to greet the kind ladies one last time to get the Five Kernel Moon Cakes, and told them good luck with their retirement, and future endeavors. Thanks for the memories.😊

Unfortunately many places do. There used to be a nice Greek diner near the Lincoln Tunnel years ago that I liked a lot. It’s been gone like many other old places

Yes and no. Many NYC places close but many new places open so it’s not too bad, In the Midwest and south where many places close and nothing replaces them. Cities like St. Louis, Memphis, Birmingham AL, etc…are basically ghost towns with almost no downtown traffic. At least NYC has not evolved into being a ghost town like other parts of America where most businesses move to the suburbs
