Chris, great job. I have a friend that has an 857 and complains all the time he has difficulty seeing the screen. This is definitely a necessary niche that has great growth potential, but even as it is now, it is a grand idea. As soon as I get my own FT-857 late this year, you'll have my business. - Mark (K7MWJ)
Looks great in every respect. I like the fact you’ve given people the option to buy self build etc. Ignore any detractors your time and effort should be fairly rewarded, excellent work bud!
Do you have another video showing how fast the display responds when using the Main Tuning dial changing frequencies. Do you plan to stay with the display. The numbers are not smooth. Jagged numbers. I own a FT-857(non D) and FT817ND I would like to use the unit on both. If the stored firmware could be booted for one or other with a switch it would be a big plus. Have you thought about bluetooth connection to the CAT port on the FT-857 instead of wired connection. My FT-857 is mounted in the trunk of my car with remote up front. I use a bluetooth adapter for a few programs like pocket rxtx and others via bluetooth. Thanks for a great project. Ken
This is only video I have. A customer did this one: facebook.com/frank.f.jensen/videos/10211749145778240/ The small processor program size (32k) and large amount of data displayed means I cannot use another smoother font & support all FT817/FT857/FT897 models. This is why 2 versions of firmware - one for 817 and one for 857/897. Cat data is plain serial so bluetooth could easily be used if you want. However you wont be using the same Cat port for the display and a PC program at the same time - the display is very Cat traffic heavy as its continuously updating. In its present form it has been well received with over 100 sold now so no immediate plans to change its format. I have jut update my 857 with a Collins filter so I'll try and fit which filter is being used on the display somewhere at some point. If I had used a Pi then the font would be better, it could support multiple rigs and touch screen would be supported. But then with my Linux programming ability and Linux's complexity, it wouldn't be ready to use until next century! all the best.
how long can the cat cable be i would like to run one of these in vehicle with only control head on dash so 15 ft would be good the display for this is much cheaper to replace then display on radio
It comes with 1.5m cat cable & I dont have longer. You could cut and splice a new section to it though. It'll do 15' ok. Only 4 wires needed RX, TX, GND & 13.8v. Shield RX/TX lines - cable like audio shielded would do. 73s om de chris zl1cvd
Please tell me Chris you're intending to develop a CAT pass-through. I really need this display, but I just can't have it monopolize the CAT port. If you can add a pass-through, you'd have a world-beating product!
Yes I do intend to add a pass through port but its taken a heck of allot to work the code out. The 328PB processor is full so have had to move to 644P. A new board has been designed and 50x delivered for almost 9 months now. I had it basically working then Arduino updated the IDE which ended up breaking my compile chain. I've got it going again with latest IDE but its not 100% perfect and needs more refinement. I've even purchased www.catdisplaypro.com as a home for it and the other versions of the basic CatDisplay. So definitely in the pipeline but taking way longer than I'd hoped. 73s om.

I won't be adding cat pass through support because there is not enough code space left in the processor. 857/897 already has 2 cat ports - rear and front microphone. See the link in video comments. More stock will be available as parts arrive. 73s om
On the transceiver make sure the AGC is turned on (auto = all modes; fast=AM; slow=SSB). Also you must be in VFO A or VFO B mode - it does not display correctly in any memory mode. 73 om de zl1cvd
Those items are not supported by Yaesu CAT commands so cannot read from FT817, FT818, FT857 or FT897 to send to CatDisplay. New models like FT991A, FTdx10 or FTdx101 have much better CAT command support and have these features on CatDisplay232 or CatMeters - see www.catmeters.com
I hooked this up to my 857D and it says it cannot find the baud rate. I've tried setting all three, turning it all off and back on, and the frequency display is all zeros and then I get the cannot find the baud rate message again. Have I overlooked something in the manual?
Make sure the cable is plugged the cat port & display port firmly. On the 857D, the Cat port is the one closest to the DC power lead. Make sure menu 020 is set to CAT. Menu 019 sets speed. On the 857D, you must press the F button after you make a menu change change until it beeps - this confirms the changed setting has been saved and is now active.

I live in a small town with high unemployment. So instead of living off a government benefit, I make and sell electronics stuff - its my only way of putting food on the table for me and my family. CatDisplay has well over 6 solid weeks of development behind it and yes, I sell it. Its available as compiled binary, kbare PCB or kit of parts - for those who want to build it; or as a completely assembled ready to go for those who can't or don't have time to build it. And I can't for the life of me work out why you would state 'especially in HAM radio'? Over 200 hams have purchased to date and all feedback, with the exception of yours, is positive.
And astonishing as it might sound another fact is, I am almost SURE about it anyway, YAESU, KENWOOD, ICOM etc. do all as well make HUGE profits - especially on HAM operators! Strange enough nobody seems to be upset about that anyway! But if some random dude around the corner decides to get his rear in gear and try to make some living of his own the big frowning begins!? UNBELIEVABLE ! I will order one as soon as I can afford to! Rest assured, Chris, YOU ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING! Keep at it! Best 73 from Germany! Michael
Raubrehbesitzer : D-Star protocol is open source (so Kenwood could also sell his stuff working on a protocol invented by the JARL in partnership with ICOM) The Yaesu serial protocol used by Chris Day is open (if not, he could not even have made his kit) I could go on and on about being open source in ham radio... a whole bunch of freaking cools ham radio projects are open and or / open source, for the benefit of all ! Nobody forbid no one to make money. Chris can sell his kits. Open Source won't kill his business... it il all the contrary...
I am working with Open Source software, for Open Source software, and I can put food on the table with it. Closing source is not the only way to earn money with software. An no, I will never ever buy something I can't put my hand in to maintain / modify / repair to suit my needs, so I will never buy your stuff. Period. If I want to modifiy or create a feature to suit my needs, a compiled binary is completely useless to me. Would you sell less if the code was opened ? Seriously ? You could sell wayyyyy more, if the code was on GitHub, because guys like me would add features, improve it and add value that will interest more people to your kit... How could you have written your code if Yeasu's serial protocol was as closed as your code ? Why especially in ham radio ? Because of ham spirit : we are makers / hackers by nature, we build and modify stuff, we benefit of mutual aid in the ham comunity. Closed source is a barrier to this state of mind...
Stan, I know the value of open source. Google my product “TenaTesta” and you will find its source code is on my google site. You wont find github because I have not worked out how to do this yet and that part not important to me anyway. I'm sure you can put food on your table when you live in the middle of the EU and have a population density of 116/km. Here, down the bottom of the globe with just 15 people per square km, things are allot different. Every sale is an export, every part ordered is an import. This all a much larger cost base and totally different way of doing business. Heck we'll be lucky if there is more than a thousand active amateurs in the whole of NZ. And you should know I'm not interested in selling wayyyy more because I'm quite busy enough. You are surely entitled to your opinion as am I. The difference is, if I found you had a good idea that I wanted and could afford, I'd buy it from you. From your comments, which seem quite negative to me, you are the type to just moan and bitch when you can't get it for free. Is this what happens when too many humans live in close proximity?

Raubrehbesitzer :
D-Star protocol is open source (so Kenwood could also sell his stuff working on a protocol invented by the JARL in partnership with ICOM)
The Yaesu serial protocol used by Chris Day is open (if not, he could not even have made his kit)
I could go on and on about being open source in ham radio... a whole bunch of freaking cools ham radio projects are open and or / open source, for the benefit of all !
