In the MLB do use the same jersey for a couple months at a time or do they get new ones every day? And how often do you get new things like helmets, hats, batting gloves etc.?
What happens during rain delays? Do you risk eating or changing even though you not sure how long the delay will be? How often do you play little games with each other or the other team?
What do players do if they've been ejected and the are watching the game and they see the benches clear? Or what if they are in the clubhouse and someone has the chance to do something historic, like hit 4 homers or throw a perfect game? Do they stay in there or risk suspension and come out?
Have you ever been in a situation where one of your teammates have been traded during a game? If so, can you possibly make a video explaining what it is like?
Thanks for the reply. I intended for this to be a topic for a video, especially because baseball coaches and instructors, such as John Madden, are teaching young players how to hit with wood, and recommending that they use wood earlier. I was also interested to hear that New York City public schools, and New Mexico high schools are required to play with wood bats, and would want to hear your take on that. I also wonder if NFHS should eventually step in to require wood bats, because the metal bats are already becoming similar to wood, due to the new BBCOR specifications.
great story Matt!!! I only played little league, but I had my favorite bat as well, it was a "bomb bat" and what I never realized when playing is that that bat was a softball bat...lol. Prob could have squared up on a few more pitches that season had I known.
been checking out your channel for awhile Matt and finally subscribed. really like hearing all the details about what its like to be in MLB. keep up the great content.
As an ex pro umpire (8 years) and D1 umpire, you would NOT have been tossed for trying to get your bat back. I think most umpires would have laughed their asses off over your attempts to get it back. I thought that was pretty funny. I dont know all the facts and circumstances, but a sense of humor is needed here. Good luck to you!!!
What a cool channel. I’ve seen two videos and even having played baseball through HS, even the unwritten rules video had really cool info that I’ve always wondered.
Matt, you seem like really good guy. Thanks very much for sharing all of this info. Just discovered your channel a couple of wks ago and enjoying very much!!! 😃
Good story, My uncle Bob Schmidt, played MLB, 59 to 67, for Giants, Reds, Yankees, and Senators. He had some type of practice bat that he filled with lead, to help his swing. He even made the All star team, and hit a Grand Slam off Sandy Kaufax.
Obviously coaches in the higher levels (College, MILB, MLB) are there because they know the game. But are they still hired on a "It's not what you know, it's who you know" type of situation? I'm 21 and have been coaching in a really good Little League program for 5 years. I could make my way to helping coach high school. I'm just not sure how good of a chance I'll have with College or higher not knowing too many people up that far. Any words of wisdom for me?
Logan Rabideau Step 1) Go to college, get a bachelor’s in anything...but play ball while doing it. Most college and pro coaches played in the pros. Most high school coaches at least played in college...and by the way, are teachers that coach on the side...ish.
I don't mean to make this awkward, but do players shower naked or do you have on underwear. If it's awkward and you don't answer it, I completely understand.
A few years ago, Royals vs. Toronto, Toronto's manager got kicked out when one of their players was hit by a pitch. Next inning Toronto hit a Royals player, the pitcher was ejected. The manager that had already been ejected came back out on the field and got into an argument with the umpire. I figured there would be a huge fine or a suspension for coming back out on the field after being ejected but the league really did nothing. What is the rule on this, I'd never seen a ejected coach return to the field before.
Hey matt. Question. Did you ever play any other sports growing up? Did you ever think about going to college in another sport or did you ever think about quitting baseball?
Said it befor on your channel, but I wish I knew then how special my yout was. I saw dozens of Oriole-Yankee games live, Weaver and Billy.... Poor umpires! ;-p
Ok weird question coming have u ever had to go number 2 mid game in bad situation, like on the field while the other team is rallying 8n a long inning or inbetween innings and then you're still in there when your team goes 1-2-3 and everyone else is out on field and they like "where's the 2bman ". That would suck
Greetings from Canada, and a Tigers fan!!! Everyone knows the Albert Belle corked bat theft story in Chicago? The umps confiscated his corked bat and put it in their room. Indians teammate Jason Grimsby, with flashlight in mouth crawled through the false ceiling and retrieved Belle's bat and substituted a Paul Sorrento bat. Clubhouse guy saw the dirt in the umps room, the umpire noticed the name Sorrento on bat and MLB called in the FBI to investigate.
There's a white Sox story with Albert Belle stealing back a bat from the umps in Chicago. Came over the wall through the ceiling tiles into the umpires room.
Now what do you do as a couch if a player gets ejected? I played football and if you got ejected you were out that game and half of the next game but usually our couch would keep us out for 2 full games and he would make you run the whole practice for a few days depending on what you got ejected for.
